10 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Ted Kennedy

ABC's Nancy Gabriner from New York:

1. Ted Kennedy was the 9th of nine children – now, only one member of that generation survives – Jean Kennedy Smith. Those nine children produced 30 offspring (including Patrick Bouvier Kennedy who only lived 2 days.) Rose and Joseph P. Kennedy are the great grandparents of 69 people.  (Visit ABC News' special section on Sen. Ted Kennedy)

2. As a child his family called him “Eddie” and some of his sisters continued to call him that as an adult.

3. His brother Jack – the future president – wrote a letter to his mother at the time of Ted’s birth asking if he could be godfather of the new baby. Senator Kennedy kept that letter framed in his office.

4. His family moved often during his childhood – including to London in 1938 when his father was named Ambassador to the Court of St. James. Ted went to ten different schools by the time he was 11 yrs. old.

5. He gave a moving and memorable eulogy at his brother Bobby’s funeral – including this quote: “As he said many times, in many parts of this nation, to those he touched, and sought to touch him, some men see things as they are and say why, I dreamed things that never were and say why not?” That quote was a paraphrase from a George Bernard Shaw play “Back to Methuselah.”  (Watch video of historic Kennedy moments)

6. According to Kennedy’s office by 2008 some 2,500 bills were proposed under Kennedy’s direction – more than 300 became law – as had 550 bills that he co-sponsored.

7.  Senator Kennedy took his Portuguese Water Dog “Splash” to work with him at the Senate.  In 2006 they  co-authored “My Senator and Me: A Dog’s Eye View of Washington D.C.”  Splash has been with Senator Kennedy since March 2000. Sunny is Splash’s niece.  Kennedy gave the Obama family a Portuguese Water Dog – First Dog “Bo”.

8. The Kennedy family has had a long battle with cancer: Ted Kennedy Jr. lost a leg to bone cancer in 1973.  Patrick Kennedy had a non cancerous tumor removed from his spine in 1988.  Kara Kennedy Allen (Ted’s daughter) was diagnosed in December 2002 with lung cancer.  Doctor’s told her it was inoperable – but she had surgery and chemotherapy and is healthy today.  Joan Kennedy (the Senator’s first wife) was treated for breast cancer in 2005.

9. Kennedy has been the family’s patriarch since 1968.  In addition to Bobby he has eulogized his parents, his nephews (including John Jr.), his sister-in-law Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis and brother-in-law Stephen Smith. He also was there for numerous happy events – escorting nieces Caroline, Kathleen, and Courtney Kennedy, Kym and Amanda Smith and his own daughter Kara on their wedding days.  (See photos of Sen. Ted Kennedy's life)

10. In 2006 Vanity Fair magazine asked Kennedy “What is your idea of perfect happiness?”  His response: “Sailing on Mya with Vicki at my side and my dogs, Splash and Sunny, at my feet.  And, of course, a Democrat in the White House and regaining our majority in the Senate.”

I am glad that Ted got his full and accomplished life. I would have wished the same for Joe, Jack and Bobby. Thanks for the good work despite the barbs. Thanks, all four for your dedication and contribution to the United States of America. We are better to have known you.

A man of service Kennedy’s life was marred by his murder of Mary Jo and a wholly imperfect ideology.

The blessing that comes with the passing of someone of Kennedy’s stature is in the pause he gives us to consider what kind of contribution we can make and how we need to persevere to do the right thing even after moments when we may fail ourselves or others.

Ted Kennedy was a man who, despite some personal failings, contribited greatly to American society over the course of nearly 50 years. His contributions to this country overwhelmingly overpower his downfalls, which are largely personal in nature and result from being raised in the high-powered culture of the Kennedy family.

Karma has an interesting way of repaying. The former Senator now has to face his maker and be judged for his actions. God help him, he’ll need it.

Edward Kennedy was an imperfect human as are we all. Some of us struggle to be better people as did Senator Kennedy. God forgives us our faults and loves us all equally. Thank you for such diligent work on behalf of us all, Mr. Kennedy, God Bless and God Speed. My condolences to your family.

For all those who wish to dig up the negative.. Are you without fault? Have you never made a serious mistake? And if you have.. did you then straighten yourself out and dedicate the next 40 years of your life to standing for those less fortunate? No? I didn’t think so. Regardless of politics, this world could use a lot more like Sen. Kennedy.. trying to make things better for everyone, not just lining their own pockets.

Ted Kennedy certainly contributed more to America than Jesse Helms who often criticized him. Nobody’s perfect but he leaves behind a fine legacy. Nobody made that girl get in his car. That was an accident.

Posted by: cregis | August 26, 2009, 1:30 pm 1:30 pm

Assume for a second it was an accident. And that the girl wasn’t forced into the car. He and the rest of the sleazy family deliberately attempted to cover up as much of the wreck as they could. They failed to report the accident until the next day, to make sure Teddy Tequila sobered up! Bear in mind, that there was a girl sitting in a wrecked vehicle, in water the entire time. How does that possibly get glossed over? That part was not an accident. That was a calculated decision.

For all the things he said he wanted to do for people, he never recognized, that his family had made a rather significant contribution to overpopulating the planet.
The one thing he might have done for the world, was recognize that there is a limit to how many humans, this planet can support.

Senator Kennedy is remembered for his opposition to the Iraq war, Bush interrogation techniques, and many Americans hope President Obama’s benchmarks for Afghanistan will “end this war” sooner rather than later.

Senator Kennedy was a great statesman and great leader.
For those who are quick to find faults and point finger, as if you have no sin.
We all have shortcomings, and we drive daily to come to that place of perfection through Christ Grace.
Remember Jesus said, the things you have done to my brethren, you have done it for me.
Senator Kennedy has contributed immensely for all mankind and will be great missed here in Ireland and around the world.

You are correct to say that I do not know exactly how I would respond to drunkenly wrecking a vehicle, but I can say with 100% certainty that my plans would not involve leaving a woman to drown overnight while sobering up and failing to notify the police and rescue units. That shows and absurd lack of character. I’m sure Mary Jo was standing side-by-side with St. Peter, pointing him to the southbound express elevator.

I remember the election to replace Senator Smith JFK’s replacement. It was between Edward McCormack the then Lt Gov of MA and the neophyte Edward Moore Kennedy, From this came the famous quote “If your name was Edward Moore yor Candidcy would be a joke”But more important was the role of his wife Joan who campained in his place after he was injured in a olane crash. Ed Kennedy: “The defining aspect of our country is opportunity — the hope that you can do better, that your children can do better … but you need an even playing field… Our country is big, strong and wealthy enough to give that kind of opportunity to everybody. That’s what I work on every day”.
“I have tried to learn from my mistakes and sought to be better in the course of my life — better husband, better brother, better father, better grandfather, better senator.”
Sen Kennedy spoke out against Homeland Security’s immigrant raid in New Bedford, Mass and how splitting up children from their families is unacceptable “immigrants built America; they ought to be given a chance to make a life here if ‘they play by the rules’.” – Kennedy’s legacy lives on.

Some more things you may or may not know about Ted Drunkennedy:
11. He loved Chivas Regal
12. Chris Dodd, another shining example of a louche Democrat, and Teddy used to like to make “waitress sandwiches” at the local watering hole.

Voice Of Reason: You were not there, you know nothing about what really happened. You state the negative only because you dislike liberals and Democrats. Real conservatives and Republicans respected and honored Ted Kennedy for all that he did right and for the honest and true efforts for the people of this country that he Loved so much. Your voice without reason will die in the wind while Kennedys great legacy lives on far beyond anything that you have or will have done. You are nothing to this man’s legacy. Again, you were not there and know NOTHING. Speculation is NOT truth!

“legacy boy”: The title you used here is the only time in you lifetime that legacy will ever be associated with your name. Ted Kennedy has already created a great and productive legacy for so many great needs for the people of this country. You, my boy, will have done nothing and while you attempt without success to diminish the accomplishments of others you will diminish into nothingness with your useless and unproductive attempts to harm others. Good luck with that. RIP Ted Kennedy, you were a GREAT man. I hope that I could do even the smallest part of all that you accomplished for the country. Thank You TED…..

It’s sad to see the last Kennedy male pass on. Like the Kennedys or not, the family has been a very big part of American history.
RIP, Senator Kennedy.

It is true that Ted Kennedy had some glaring faults but by all accounts he straightened up his life, seemingly coinciding with his marriage to Victoria.
Yes, he cetainly used poor judgement in the case of May Jo Kopeckne but that happened 40 years ago. And the posts here that claim he murdered her are pure nonsense. He accepted responsibilities for his actions and admitted he was wrong to do what he did. It’s time to let it go.

Posted by: Chuck Wavy Dean | August 26, 2009, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

So with all his failings, Kennedy accomplished significant things. Do we need to rethink tossing Elliot Spitzer or our run to skewer Gov. Mark Sanford? Either Kennedy should have been gone long ago or these men should get a pass and allow them to do great things as well in spite of their personal failings. What say ye?

I think Ted Kennedy probably did penance all his life since 1969, setting aside the vanity and driving ambition involved in “reaching for the top” like his brothers, to simply do his best to serve in the Senate. Not a bad example for all of us flawed human beings with real sins on our conscience, and one that brings genuine happiness, too.

Posted by: Penny - Canada | August 26, 2009, 8:33 pm 8:33 pm

Yes, Kennedy was great, wasn’t he. Don’t you wish everyone involved in vehicular homicide got a chance to skip a trial, jail or prison.
Yes, Kennedy did some good things, but he ALSO was responsible for killing a person, trying to hide it, never had to pay the price like the rest of us, because his fans adored his brother. Shame on him.

Although I do not agree with the man’s politics, I do admire his strength, his conviction and his service. He fought for what he believed was right. You have to admire the man regardless of whether you agree with his point of view or not. I think that death is a perfect time to speak well of people and I disagree with a statement prior that asked why we canonize people on their death. We don’t, we can still disagree, but the fact is, this man has gone on to the next world. He is finished here. Though his politics may have serious errs (according to my assessment), God doesn’t judge on politics, but on love. And again, remember, it’s God who judges, not us. He knows the heart–not us.

Do you think a congressman gets just the salary? Each one costs nearly $5 million a year with all their allowed expenses, offices, secretarys for each office, in all the districts of their state. Has there ever died a congressman who wasn’t financially better off than when he was elected? Not in a Kennedy’s lifetime. Ted was passing gun restrictions while his own bodyguards carried machine guns.

Here are five things liberals do not mention of this guy. This guy never had to earn anything in his life and was a protégé of entitlement and privilege. Acquired his jobs from his brothers and lived in their shadows.
Born of privilege, yet created legislation that did not apply to him – typical rhetoric and hypocrisy.
A womanizer and boozer – who made a mockery of his faith and family,
1965 Immigration act – one of the worst policies to affect this country, socially and economically; everything he claimed would not happen – happened.
The death of Mary Jo Kopechne at Chappaquiddick – showed his character
Expelled from Harvard for cheating, Etc…
His latest great gift to this country and its populace would have given amnesty to millions of criminals who have violated federal law all on the tax payers back.
Yet he has duped many – thanks Ted

I don’t know why everyone wants to sing his praise’s.The fact is the man killed a woman and was never punished for it becouse of who his family is and all the money he had.I for one thinks he should have gone to prison just like anyone else that did’nt have his family and money would have for killing someone and failling to report the crime which is what he did. As for all the so called good things he has done thru the years since that is just hogwash all he has done over the years is try to make this nation more socialized not more of a republic which is what we are suppose to have as a goverment. We need to go back to the way our goverment was set up in the first place as a republic not a democrocy

The Kennedy’s did alot for this country… So lets all remember that first before all the bad comments. And also remember people who live in glass houses should not throw stones…. No one is perfect…. We are all human and are all bound to make mistakes in our lives no matter how little or big the mistake was it was still a mistake…… And ted was human just like the rest of us…..

For all who have negative things to say, I have only one question. What other than paying taxes have many of us done for this Country? If you can answer this question and look beyond yourself and feel content with the mediocre accomplishments that most have done for this great Country than be proud and observe the passing of someone who has loved this Country of ours. But on the otherhand if you are like many who actively seek never ending schemes to evade paying taxes and cheat our follow Americans (like the many that are pusued by the IRS) then maybe you should look in the mirror and turn over a new leaf- be apart of something great and dedicate apiece of your life to making a difference in others lives and not just a peanut-gallery of selfish, self centered- lazy Americans that our forefathers never intended for us to become…

I remember Ted Kennedy came to our school in 1972. The class was allowed to pick six members to ask Ted Kennedy any question we wanted. We picked six of the class clowns who spent the night reading the dictionary for long words to use in a sentence. It was funny because I don’t think even the person asking the sentence knew what they were talking about. Ted Kennedy finally just encouraged as to ask “normal” questions. I quess everyone of us was happy that he didn’t get us in trouble. He pretended that HE didn’t understand and that was a relief because the principal was looking at us indicating detention for all of us. Mr. Ted Kennedy just pretended that it was all his fault, but he knew we were trying to act like clowns in front of the newscamera and trying to mess up the newscoverage. After it was over, he came over shook our hands and said he thought it was interesting the way we were trying to string unrelated words together. He truly was a gentlemen and irregardless of his past, he really did care about others including smarty pants high school kids.

it was teddy’s 1986 immigration bill that gave about 3 million illegal aliens amnesty, which in turn was the magnet that brought 20 million more illegal aliens to the country, and teddy wanted to repeat that fiasco all over again!
no wonder he is always referred to as “the dumb kennedy”, but we really have to blame the sheeple of Massachusetts for re-electing the moron over and over

Hasn’t anybody ever investigated the possibility that Ted had a severe concussion that night? People with concussion and acute memory loss can do any number of weird things, including wander around in a daze, muttering to themselves, and maybe not report a serious injury that just happened – because they don’t remember it!
Ask any neurologist – there were no seat belts in those days, he certainly had blunt trauma to the head, and that poor girl was probably already dead before he left the car.

Ted Kennedy, like his brothers before him, was a giant of a man, and stood for the things that made this great country greater. It is the wealthy that have been raised with a need to give back service to their country in the form of speaking for the poor, the immigrants, the sick, and to constantly pave the road for the common man, that represent the best of America. That is the real definition of a patriot.
NOT the small-minded, harsh, fear-mongering, divisivness of the Limbaugh, Hannity, Beck, O’reilly crowd…their pictures should be next to a definition
of “Ugly American”
It is all summed up in the inscription on the Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor
Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free.
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest – lost to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door”
RIP Ted Kennedy, we will sorely miss you

Interesting I would of ranked him even with O.J. Simpson… He got away with murdering a young girl he was having sex with… Kinda like a bunch of them only some had to do jail time…

You missed one:
11. The only U.S. Senator ever to basically murder or allow his ‘date’ to die of asphyxiation in a submerged car.
Really! If you heard on the news that a person (call him “John Doe”) was under investigation for abandoning a car he wrecked while drunk driving and “police were focusing on whether Mr. Doe” left his girlfriend to suffocate in an air pocket in the upside down car, you would be shocked, left to rage at the evening news and say “How could anyone do that! That’s tantamount to murder!” (or at least manslaughter).
And for doing EXACTLY this “Uncle Teddy” (the DRUNK WOMANIZER) pled guilty to leaving the scene of an accident, never saw the inside of a jail and lived ALL his days wanting for nothing. ABSOLUTELY SICKENING!
ABC was so quick to point out all the family the Kennedys raised, yet Mary Jo was left to die in a car and did not get to marry or raise a family.
I have never had any respect for Ted Kennedy. The entire Kennedy clan disgust me with the exception of JFK and Bobby…good men both. The Kennedys live off of a legacy of ill gotten wealth (from bootlegging during prohibition and making profit on serving food to boatworkers making warships in the middle of a war and etcetera), Teddy’s offshore bank accounts (hiding his money while telling us to give more to his liberal causes), serial womanizing and adultery, multi-generational drug and alcohol AND drunk-driving histories–ALL WHILE NEVER BEING HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANYTHING AND HAVING ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD TO LIVE LIKE KINGS, while better men and women fight for an existence. Enough said–good riddance!

10. In 2006 Vanity Fair magazine asked Kennedy “What is your idea of perfect happiness?” His response: “Sailing on Mya with Vicki at my side and my dogs, Splash and Sunny, at my feet. And, of course, a Democrat in the White House and regaining our majority in the Senate. Oh yea having been able to murder a young girl and get away with it.”

Here is a man that spent his final years trying to make up for the fact that he had no business being a senator. If this was you or I, we would have been kicked out of a school we didn’t deserve to attend. Then spent countless years in prison. Then died a miserable drunk. What a joke.

reporter forgot Chappaquiddick, Mary Jo Kopechne,
On the night of July 18, 1969, Kennedy was on Martha’s Vineyard’s Chappaquiddick Island at a party for the “Boiler Room Girls”, a group of young women who had worked on his brother Robert’s presidential campaign the year before. Leaving the party, Kennedy was driving a 1967 Oldsmobile Delmont 88 with one of the women, 28-year-old Mary Jo Kopechne, as his passenger, when Kennedy drove off Dike Bridge into the Poucha Pond inlet. Kennedy escaped the overturned vehicle, swam to safety and left the scene. He did not call authorities until after Kopechne’s body was discovered the following day

Would have done a hell of a lot more with his life if he wasn’t a career politician.

the kennedy family is exactly why this country was formed in the first place, to prevent aristocracies from dominating citizens.
the constitution was written to prevent institutions like the kennedy family. maybe that’s why teddy had so little regard for the document. everything teddy did was to preserve his life of privilege, he did this by ensuring the perpetuation of an underclass, by making them permanently dependent on the government

Senator Kennedy was an institution. Although I disagreed with almost all of his left wing programs, he did get legislation passed that almost all americans could support: Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), No Child Left Behind, and the Civil Rights Act of 1965. However, his embrace of socialist
governments abroad and socialism at home
overshadow his accomplishments. He was part of a concerted effort, along with LBJ, his brother Bobby, and other committed leftists to make Americans push away from the tried and true American virtues of individual responsibility, family responsibility,
hard work/hard study, self-control in personal vices, free enterprise, and mass public support of PRIVATE charities for our poorer citizens. He and his collectivist buddies have created an American society where there is no longer any shame in depending on the government for your food, shelter, livelyhood, and, maybe soon, even health care. The country will definitely become bankrupt in this liberal nonsense continues unabated. The Democratic party represents millions of able bodies American adults
who should be forced to make their own way in the world and support their families. But, no one calls them on their laziness, anti-social behavior, and their carefree attotude as they steal the hard earned tax money of their more responsible fellow citizens. We can thank Ted Kennedy for this state of affairs. Finally, Ted Kennedy was part of a generation of Democratic politicians who backed away from the bi-partisan foreign policy post WWII that featured a strong anti-communist and containment of communism core and support of strong nations worldwide. Kennedy and George McGovern, given their way, would have dismantled our nuclear arsenal and emasculated our military just when the tide against the Soviet Union was turning. Much like the
dependency and infantilizing of most poor whites, blacks, and hispanics, this attempt to cave in to the Soviet Union was never slammed by the Main Street Media. Fellow travellers and useful idiots to the end. I am praying tonight for his family and friends and praying for his soul as well. I am also praying for the descendents of Mary Jo Kopechne, an RFK political worker, who he committed adultry with and left to die without calling rescue personnel instead calling his lawyer and political advisors trying to salvage his career while poor Mary Jo drowned without assistance. The state of Massachusetts, also known as the Fiefdom of Kennedy, let him off the hook
and sealed the records to avoid the truth being told. Shame on all of them for that.

Kennedy was a poor role model for anyone interested in politics. Partisan before it was popular to be partisan, he was for “green energy” until it would disturb his view. His personal life was a mess, his politics left of most of American society. He was famous for bieng a Kennedy, not for what he contributed to society.

Ted Kennedy murdered someone. His whole life doesn’t matter, he killed someone and got away with it. One evil is not outweighed by any number of good things. He wasn’t even remorseful, he tried to scrub the whole incident.

Here is one more fun fact about Senator Kennedy: He was born on February 22, and his brother John suggested to his parents that they name the baby George Washington Kennedy. Joe and Rose were probably smart to pass on that idea.

Last night i was in Malaysia when i switched on the television set and cnn announced the death of Senator Edward Kennedy. i was alone at home. some 46 years ago i was india, and i heard on radio the death of president Kennedy. All Kennedy deaths have touched me deeply. They, the Kennedys represent life.
The life i would like to have: the glamour, wealth, lifestyle, luxuries and homes
The tragedies that come with being alive:
death, disease, addictions, fall from grace
The glories that come with work well done:
successful careers, public duties, charities, recognition
The shame of our personal shortcomings:
scandals, faults, public judgment
The strength of character i would like to have:
the ability of walk with head held high in the face of apparent shame and criticism, and to go on doing what you believe in no matter what others believe of you
What i would like to leave behind
More than just footsteps in the sand.
I salute you Edward Kennedy. I knew you from your speeches, the stories and the pictures. I wish i could have met you just once.
When John Kennedy passed away, i was a young school kid and i wrote to the late Jacqueline Kennedy, my hero, and she replied and sent me pics which i have till today.
May you rest in peace.

Heroes do what is right even in the face off danger. They stand up for their own integrity. They do not lie, cheat, or steal. Ted Kennedy lied, cheated, and stole the life of a woman instead of trying to save her. He is a coward, and an example off a flawed election system and corrupt politics. God does not bless him, I hope he is paying for his sins in hell, because he has many. All of those bills, laws, and whatever everyone claims were his victories, would have been written and passed without him. He was a senator because his last name began with K and ended with ennedy. A fat drunk, coward until the end. Also, thanks for sticking us with a bum president.

Dear Stickman,
Yes, I have made “serios” mistakes in my life, and I willingly forgive those who also make them. However, I have never KILLED another person (accept in warfare) and tried to cover it up by waiting a couple of hours by first calling my lawyers and then 911. I have never been considered a womanizer, and have never proclaimed to be a supporter of women’s lib. However, senator kennedy (yes, I know I didn’t capitalize it) proclaimed to be a great supporter of everything liberal, yet was widely known as a womanizer. However, the left forgives, or refuses to accept the fact that its greatest “lien” (read: lion) was one who went against most of his own liberal beliefs. Such a shame. I know I won’t lose a minute of sleep. I dare yahoo to print this, but I doubt they will.

As an independent thinker, I must say unfortunately that billybob and the like minded, are without sin. It is my belief, that they are of like mind with the people of the past 8 years who raped this country and its people of all that was noble and honorable and good. I shall pray for their souls as I will for the soldiers they sent off to die in the middle east, so that they may enrich themselves and dishonor the most noble of our country. Yes, we all shall be judged, for the good and our own shortcomings, the mistakes we have made, and for our own ignorance. Real leaders lead by example, they own up to their mis-steps, and do their best to make amends. I for one would rather go hungry myself than to take food out of the mouths of children, as this past 8 yrs of greedy, self enrichment unfolded.
Mr Kennedy has given far more than these poor excuses for patriots. Pigs at the trough.
talk is cheap, may god forgive us all.

The autopsy confirmed that Miss Kopechne was alive for several hours before her oxygen ran out. Kennedy swam to his hotel and INSTEAD of calling for a resue team, he called his lawyer and 2 top political advisors. He also must be called into account along with JFK, LBJ, RFK, Old Man Kennedy, and Mayor Daly for STEALING the 1960 Presidential election in Illinois (Cook County-Chicago) and LBJ’s Texas. Ah, the Democrats do love their democracy.

He was an imperfect man and a great Senator. If you were a woman and played sports in college, are a minority, were an immigrant, are retired or have been unemployed/laid off or were in the Iraq or Afganistan wars his work has had an impact on your life. For all those who criticized him, you might want to remember that! Hopefully now as people write about him, they will realize all of the amazing “liberal” things he has done.

Posted by: Random | August 27, 2009, 9:12 am 9:12 am

I never delight in seeing a person pass away and know that it is a terrible loss to the families. Having stated that however, this “plight of all mankind” does not diminish the actions and matters surrounding each individual to such an extent that “people” should just pass over it all as if all is fine and o.k. about what a particular individual has or has not accomplished.
Ted Kennedy was a radical out of sync with American ideals and laws and purposes! He was a very mean spirited person. Rude and arrogant as most Democrats are or seem to be! Certainly even “mean” people and “radical” people do have some “good” things humanly speaking that they support or accomplish. But his views on politics and social issues were really foreign to our nations objectives and purposes under the Constitution and Bill of Rights. He fit in more with radical socialism of Europe or Russia! Not happy he has passed on due to my views of the special and sacred thing life is on earth given by God, but thankful his radicalism will pass away at least from his personage on the hill!

To those who say “have you not made mistakes yourself?” or “Ted was not perfect”…you CANNOT compare the manslaughter and/or murder of another human to “making a mistake” as if Ted had bounced a check. There is no justification for what he did and more importantly what Ted did in the immediate hours after he drove his car off a bridge drunk. He has NEVER apologized for this and the Kennedy family never will. They are about the law. Why do you think Ted has millions offshore in the Caymans? They have always been about “do as I say, not as I do”, doing back to Joe, Sr. who railed against booze, but emerged from prohibition a wealthy, wealthy man from his bootlegging enterprise. The Kennedys are and always have been hypocrites.

He presented himself as being for the forgotten man, yet the real forgotten man, the taxpayer, has been and continues to be burdened by the Kennedy legacy. The ordinary citizens, who work and pay taxes, also want to realize the American dream, yet the liberals deny that to them every single day through taxes, surcharges, fees, and costs of government. The man was a yellow coward plain and simple. Anybody know the difference between a live Ted Kennedy and a dead Ted Kennedy? I’ll tell ya. The dead Ted Kennedy is probably sober.

Perfect happiness is sailing on his yacht – from money inherited because Joseph Kennedy Sr. was part of the mob during prohibition. Hardly a man of the people. What is sad is that Joe Jr. died on essentially a suicide mission during World War 2. He sounds like he was the “best of the worst”. When his sister Kathleen Kennedy married a Protestant and the entire Kennedy family ostracized her, Joseph Jr. not only attended the wedding at a Protestant Church but also gave her away. Sadly, she also died violently in a plane crash.

@gal1693: I am a person who is smart enough to understand that some people are not admirable because of their bad character. If somebody admits guilt, does not cover up the issue, takes responsibility, and then lives his life in public service (not in public power like the Senate), I am willing to honor that person. Because I believe that all are sinners and we have a God that is redemptive for the repentant. Unfortunately Mr. Kennedy, did not take responsibility, he covered up the act, and then spent the rest of his life justifying it in a self-indulgent position of power. Elected office at the federal level is not service, it is power. Let us look at a contrast, the Bush girls are teaching in areas that are impoverished: that is public service. Or take McCains kids: his son is serving in combat in Iraq-he is a public servant, his daughter is a blogger taking advantage of her father’s name – she is a leech. But the liberal elite will ignore all these things because they base admiration on politics. Frankly, this orgiastic adulation by the MSM of everything Kennedy simply is another reason why most news outlets are going bankrupt and seeking to be bailed out by the Obama stimulus. They are totally out of touch with the average American.

One more thing: this idiotic view that passing legislation is some part of greatness. The Founding Fathers made passing a law very difficult. Has anybody thought about why this is so. They wanted laws that were absolutely necessary, not the agenda or whim of some political party. If the intent for the Founding Fathers to have Congress pass laws as a reaction to every little crisis, they would have simple made it a majority and no veto power. They also would have left the Supreme Court out of the mix. Passing legislation should be a last resort not a desperate impulse to force the “tyranny of the majority or the loudest” on everybody else. Sponsoring over 2500 laws is to his shame not honor. Look at him: he also wanted to change laws just to suit his whim (Senatorial replacement in Massachusetts). Take all his character flaws out of the mix, this is not a smart man. No wonder he flunked out of Harvard.

Makes ya sick to see Obama going GA GA over Kennedy. But then Obama should be grateful.
Right? Its the way politics works.
Wonder if Hillary will be at the funeral?

I’ll always remember him for Chappaquiddick, trying to ram illegal aliens through with amnesty and the socialized medical system. He never would have succeeded in the private sector.

I admired and respected President John F. Kennedy because of his “Blue Dog” Democrat socio-economic ploicies.
President Kennedy always tried to do what was in the best interest of the nation, and the American people. Unlike his brother Teddy, he understood the consequences of unchecked Eglitarian social policy, and knew that you cannot help The Third World by enacting legislation to become The Third World.
As for Teddy, bon voyage!

I can’t get past the fact that he left a young woman trapped in his car to die a horrific death alone and under water, that he COULD have called the police to try to save her and that he DIDN’T.
That’s not a normal human failing or imperfection; it is chillingly cold-blooded.
As for his limousine liberal politics, they have done great damage to our country and to the people who have been trapped and debilitated by the growing government bureaucracy that has been turning us from free citizens into slaves of the state for years.

While some on this and other sites criticize those of us who bring up his ‘failings’ and ask if we are not also imperfect, I must say that I am imperfect, but have never used my wealth and my special status to be completely excused for a murder. He was, first and foremost, a really, really vile person whose life was a blot on the earth.

The Flags are flying at Half Mast for Kennedy? Why? Because he and his family have Money….Yes Money! M O N E Y Money!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Did the Flags Fly at Half mast when he killed MaryJo?
I can’t speak for the Family of MaryJo…But I Believe that they’re letting out a Great Sigh of relief knowing that her Murderer who lived a Full Life,is now gone into the Great unknown where there is no Money and no Females….to Harass.
I’m sure that with his Money he was able to Bargain his Nephew William Kennedy Smith out of going to Prison too….
I’m Guilty of doing alot of wrongs in my past, but I’m not a Rich Kennedy who can buy a Stay out of Prison Card.

“Pvt” Edward Kennedy will be buried in Arlington . No doubt the sounds heard will be those thousands of heroes spinning in their graves.

I pray for his family. I am sure at this point in Ted Kennedy’s afterlife, his eyes are opened that when he was alive he was wrong 99% of the time. However, that realization is too late since he has missed the opportunity to correct it!

May the Lord have mercy on his soul.
Dog named “Splash”?
God bless the family of MaryJo Kopeckne (sp?. They are the true class act. Paint Ted Kennedy in any light light you want, still can’t undo a needless death.

So nice Ted was able to live out his life and pursue what he wanted (women and booze among them)I wonder what Mary Jo would have accomplished had Ted not left her in the car to drown. That’s one hell of a ‘mistake’ as some of you call it. I wonder too how much of his estate he left to the ‘unfortunate’. I’m not sad about his passing, more like relieved.

It’s to bad that Mr. Kennedy couldn’t have lived to see his son Patrick get engaged. The best to Patrick and Amy
