Barney Frank Growls Back at Health Care Town Hall

This summer has seen several instances of members of Congress heading home and catching heck from constituents upset over proposed reforms to health care.  The outbursts quickly circulated around the web and on T.V.  But rarely have we seen a politician fire back.  Until now.

Barney Frank, chairman of the House Financial Services Committee took a question at a town hall meeting from a woman who compared President Obama’s ideas on health care to the policies of Adolph Hitler.  Frank, who is Jewish, had this to say:  “When you ask me that question, I’m going to revert to my ethnic heritage and ask you a question: On what planet do you spend most of your time?”  The Democrat went on to say, ”Ma’am, trying to have a conversation with you would be like trying to argue with a dining room table.” “I have no interest in doing it.”

Frank tried to assure the crowd that the health plans being discussed in Washington would not mean more taxes for them.  Whether he succeeded in getting his message across is debatable.  At one point Frank exclaimed, “Which one of you wants to yell next?”

The President of the AMA urged the democrats to pass the health care bill under the committees of jurisdiction.
Thus, they would bypass all republicans, independents, and any democrats that had any reservations about this entire bill as presented at this time.
Sounds as if ALL physicians are on board, doesn’t it?
Well, no, that is false!
The MAJORITY of physicians are NOT members of the AMA. Did you know that?
I didn’t, but now I do.
I’m not here to debate whether doctors are experts or not. I’m here to point up the fact that democrats are trying to sneak one pass us. Democrats are presenting this information in a way that makes it look like ALL doctors are on board. Not True!
Democrats are also trying to bypass the normal way of doing business in the senate. They would need a lesser number of ‘yes’ votes if they pass the bill through a ‘committee of jurisdiction’.
It’s just plain dishonest and sneaky.
You have to ask yourself, is this the right way to do the country’s business?
Or is this a true picture of how democrats roll? This senario is very telling, and it won’t play well in the next election.
This bill should be presented in a clear light, and also in a correct straigt forward manner.
ABC, can you fact check this please and present it to the public? Thank you.

Barney has his nerve!
He insulted all of the people at that town hall meeting, especially that one woman. Given his history, Barney must be from another planet himself!
He’s the same guy who was the head of the Banking and Housing Laws Committee.
Who do you think help bring down this country with all of those bad laws? Barney was companion with one of the top execs at either Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac. (I can’t remember exactly.) Talk about malfeasance of duty!
The next time there is a town hall meeting and Barney is the speaker, I hope somebody in the audience calls him on what he did to this country, and blast him with his intentional neglect of what he was suppose to do while Chairperson of the Banking and Housing Committee.
Of course, this is only my opinion.
Judge for yourself.

ddg- So I assume that you think the woman who called Obama “Hitler” is innocent? And don’t give me the “she didn’t call him that” spin you people always seem to revert to. Also, there was more than one person who brought down the economy, but we can’t mention him because you people get hysterical. Your selective memory needs retooled.

Posted by: gee | August 19, 2009, 12:52 pm 12:52 pm

My purpose was not to defend that one particular woman. I suppose she is entitled to her opinion. Goodness knows everybody has one. Don’t you?
Now to get on to Barney Frank.
Barney Frank had a big part in this fiasco. Don’t try to downplay his part.
The REST of the country, the President included, had to go along with what Mr. Frank endorsed at that time. There was no getting around it.
Do not give Mr. Frank license to rake this country over once again. He was indeed THE person who gave unqualified people the ability to buy a home.
Unfornately, these same people were not able to really afford the home even when times were at its BEST. So who did he hurt? Mostly poor people. What do democrats think about this?
Barney Frank fits in well with the democrats. Maybe he can be head of the committe of jurisdiction regarding the health care bill.

Thank you Barney Frank! This is a lesson for all others to follow in answering idiots in the public square.

Posted by: Armando Saenz | August 19, 2009, 1:26 pm 1:26 pm

What would Barney say to the people who lost their homes because they did not really qualify to buy their house?
“Oops, sorry.”?? How could Barney explain his ‘mistakes’ when he was chairperson for the Banking and Housing Committee?
I do not think Barney was an idiot.
I would call him a representative who was not looking out for others, and who was engaged in activity that was not in the best interest of the majority.
The proof is in the pudding. People who definitely were not qulified were able to ‘buy a house’, but they just couldn’t ‘keep the house’. This happened
even when times were ‘good’.
Mr. Frank is responsible for those bad laws.
I wouldn’t call the public idiots either. Maybe gullible, yes.
I hope that the next audience calls down Mr. Frank and ask him about his malfeasance of duty.

Posted by: ddg | August 19, 2009, 1:38 pm 1:38 pm

Also, I don’t care for the way a lot of democrats are going about business.
If you can’t ram down this bill (through the committee of jurisdiction), than maybe you can bully your way by calling people ‘idiots’ or ‘dining room furniture’.
I didn’t care for that woman using the name Hitler either. However, I wouldn’t stand before the people and insult them either. It showed no class, and absolutely no grace under fire.
Well, I really didn’t expect anything different from Mr. Frank anyway.
I hope ABC will address the committee of jurisdiction issue and also what Barney Frank had to say (and the irony of his history).

It is amazing how many people form opinions based on lies and spin.
Go Barney!

Posted by: John Fotia | August 19, 2009, 1:50 pm 1:50 pm

I finally listened to Frank in the audio above. Obviously, this woman was referring to The end of life consultation.
People say that Pres. Obama was just talking when he said the following about this health bill:
“Not everybody who needs a hip replacement will be able to get one. Of course, that was my Grandmother. I would have paid for it.”
Can you possibly see where this woman above was coming from?
Pres. Obama said what he said, and a lot of people actually believe his word.
Are people (Mr. Frank) NOW saying that Pres. Obama’s statement was somehow false/or misunderstood/or has now changed to fit the situation?
Apparently, that woman took Pres. Obama at his word. I do, too. Don’t you? Or are you selective?
She used the Hitler word, which doesn’t set well with most people. It doesn’t with me either. This only gave Frank some ammunition. However, he really did not answer any questions or concerns.
Frank has his nerve considering HIS past with the Banking and Housing Committee!
Maybe Frank can be compared with Hitler-like behavior. He was able to derail people’s dream of owning their own home for good, too.
So if Frank can’t stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen.

Posted by: ddg | August 19, 2009, 2:05 pm 2:05 pm

And just for clarification:
I’m not totally against having some form of health care reform.
It is needed. I understand that.
However, the bill should be presented in a precise line by line manner to Congress and to the people. This takes time to do this. Don’t ram it down people’s throats and don’t insult each other either (other than Barney Frank he’s fair game).
Also, the bill should be presented to Congress in a normal way, not by committee of jurisdiction.

Posted by: ddg | August 19, 2009, 2:12 pm 2:12 pm

Yes, it is amazing how people can spin things. However, Barney doesn’t spin anything. He just rewrites whole segments of history.
Please do some research on Barney Frank. You will be amazed indeed.

Barney Frank should not have played into the hands of the protesters, by shouting them back afterall he is an official who works for the people. barney Frank should have presented copies or summaries of the current bill floating around and discuss the most important point which is how are we going to pay for this plan, the CBO is contradicting the White House numbers and it should have detailed information with facts and numbers to calm people down.

Posted by: lilyrose | August 19, 2009, 2:47 pm 2:47 pm

B.S. If someone doesn’t stand up to the bullies in the playground, then our freedoms rapidly go down the toilet. If you can’t ask a civil question without ugly name calling, then you should not be taken seriously. You people say these protesters have a right to be heard, and I agree. But if someone does not permit their childish petulance and tantrums, then you accuse them of restricting their rights. The truth is when they act like complete idiots, shouting others down, not allowing the speaker to lead the meeting, etc. THEY are guilty of denying others of their Constitutional rights and need to be called on it. Thank you, Barney.

There are many people in power that can be accused of re-writing history. We just had a case not long ago when an operative for government intelligence was illegally outed and NO ONE was prosecuted for what was absolutely an unlawful act. Yes, Barney Frank made some mistakes with FM & FM, but believe me, he was not the prime mover in degulating the greedy bankers so much that they would drag our entire economy down. Phil Gramms from Texas rewrote the entire set of laws established by FDR and a Democratic Congress after the same kind of wild, insatiable speculation with ordinary people’s money had plunged us into the Great Depression. It has been Republicans screaming that business can be trusted to police itself: history clearly shows that is NOT the case over and over again.

Posted by: Igor | August 19, 2009, 3:18 pm 3:18 pm

What does that have to do with the real issue? Why aren’t we arguing in the ball park? Spin doctors are just plain dizzy! I know the players hate a side by side list of the pros and cons. That is because logic does nothing to serve the ego!
Hitler? We had him for hate years!

Posted by: still born | August 19, 2009, 3:36 pm 3:36 pm

Thank you Barney Frank for finally standing up to these idiots. Everyone has the right to their own opinion but when you diliberatly disrupt town hall meetings so we can hear what the speaker has to say, your rights end there. What happen to old fashioned manners? I agree with Igor. Most Americans are too lazy to read the facts.

Posted by: Mike in Detroit | August 19, 2009, 3:57 pm 3:57 pm

That woman simply believes the lies and distortions that the bloviators, such as Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh, feed to their nitwit audiences. Glenn Beck spent one program trying to prove that Adolph Hitler was a socialist and then tried to equate fascists with socialists. Thereby proving that he either has no knowledge of history or is willing to lie repeatedly to make his case against any rational response to the US health care problem. This poor lady simply has no knowledge of history, cannot use an encyclopedia, and accepts the lies of these bloviators.
Isn’t it amazing that the lineal descendants of fascists are now calling honest liberals “fascists?” The irony never stops, but most Americans have little knowledge of history, to our detriment.

Anyone who is so ignorant as to compare Obama and health plan to Nazism deserves whatever ridicule and scorn comes with it. Good for Barney Frank for stating what many of whose would like to say to these people…People who are so flippant with these characterizations should experience true fascism and Nazism so they could tell the difference from democracy..

I commend Mr. Frank for growling back at the woman who used the Nazi’card to get attention.
As for me, I spent twenty three years taking care of people in my practice. I was never sued because I did NOT do things like defenseive medicine. I read the medical journals and used evidence medicine. I spent 10 of those years taking care of older people and dementia. I now have a dementing illness but I am still here. The public option is the only thing that can keep the dogs at bay. I hope that the the President will throw everything at the rebublicans. They do not want honest debate. I hope to see Mr. Obama stair down one of them an put them in their place. Please, Mr. President, Please Kick some #### and GET It Done. No more Mr. Nice guy.

This nation is at a crossroads. The House is out of control and Henry Waxman and Barney Frank are prime examples of why we need to reel this congress in for replacement in 2010 if the nation lasts that long.
The Senate is just as bad, obviously viewing itself as the ruling class that will get its way. Consider this statement by Manley; “However,” he cautioned, “patience is not unlimited and we are determined to get something done this year by any legislative means necessary.”
Democracy has failed when the populace is considered a threat to the lawmakers’ agenda. It has failed when an arrogant congress and a glib speaking president unite against the will of the people with an attempted move into socialism.
They collectively pretend we are making false claims (Obama even says “bearing false witness” what a comment from a man committed to promulgating abortion!) yet they make no apologies for how the bill is written, if it really meant something else why did they choose writers who cannot express what they mean?
It’s a fight, and the question is will democracy win or will the administration and this out of control congress win?

I am not a newcomer to the health care debate. In 1967, I penned a letter to the editor re; my assertion that the US was not a free country due to having not clue about health care and medicine. It is the same today. I have waited a long time for the day when Health care is not a commodity but is part of a civilized nation on an egalitairian basis. why should the administration not have the same health care that I have to pay for. why can I not have the program. I live hear and I have been here since 1963 Why should anyone have to live in a place without an health care system. Can anyone anwswer that.???

The reaction of Mr. Barney Frank was absolutely awful for a House representative. Instead of insulting her back he should have debated her point intelligently not demeaning.

Posted by: TSM | August 19, 2009, 8:58 pm 8:58 pm

I like Braney Franks answer too. The woman came off like a loony toon to me. If she would have asked intelligent questions I am sure she would have received an logical answer. She was really pre-set in her mind and only out to cause problems.

Posted by: AnnD | August 19, 2009, 9:43 pm 9:43 pm

It was indeed Barney who came off like a ‘loony’. A lot of people like to be selective and rewrite history.
It happens in all walks of life.
I know what I know, however. Barney Frank had a boyfriend at Fannie Mae (I believe it was Fannie), and he ignored his job by making it easier for his friend. That’s malfeasance of duty, plain and simple. If you try to say otherwise, then what would YOU call it?
Do you really think Barney is a ‘swell’ guy? Ask all of the poor people who lost their house (down payments/whatever they put in their house). Is Barney REALLY a swell guy?
He made it easier (by writing banking and housing laws) for people to buy a home, who were not actually set up to sustain the note. (This happened before the bust. WHAT DO YOU THINK STARTED THE BUST?)
Is he the ONLY one? NO. There were people like President Obama who was the #2 senator who took contributions from lending institutions. There were plenty others. Obama wasn’t the only one.
WHAT DO YOU ALL HAVE TO SAY ABOUT THAT?
That’s right, keep putting down the woman in the above meeting. That way you won’t have to answer the charges about Barney Frank.
Hey, I actually believe we need changes in our health care.
We can start with Tort Reform. Silly lawsuits can be halted. Lawyers can stop making commercials about every new medicine that comes along. How about that?
We can follow up with passing a law that makes it illegal for companies to drop you; also, they must take everybody who applies even with pre-existing conditions. We can start with that. What do you say?
Lets focus on things that we agree on.
Also, the committee of jurisdiction?
Not a good idea! Do it the right way.
What if the shoe was on the other foot and a Republican was President at this time? Would you still think comm. of jurisdiction was a ‘swell’ idea?
Barney needs to retire and get out of the kitchen if he can’t take the heat.
He was a disgrace under fire.
That shows his true character.

Frankly…. I’m sick to death of the oppositions tactics. The screaming routines for the sake of the press. The Nazi analogies. The attempts to scare folks with talk of death panels. Okay if the current bill isn’t right – fine. Discuss its flaws…with civility! As for the rights cries of no voice I have little sympathy. The republicans had control of congress AND the oval office for years. In that time NO meaningful health care reform was passed. How come? What we did get was record deficits, two wars, international disdain and a financial meltdown.

Posted by: chris | August 20, 2009, 2:56 am 2:56 am

Thank you Barney Frank! Now we know how to handle someone like that woman in these meetings. We do need reform. There is no question. I just hope all the fear mongering and fairy tales don’t prevent those who really need some help in the health care field from getting it.

What this video clip fails to show is a followup question from a gentleman asking Barnyard Frank if he would be willing to forgo his congressional benefits and opt for the plan being propose by the President. His comment to that person was essentially that it was a poor question and did nothing to encourage constructive dialog about healthcare. BF then went on to comment about how he was disappointed with the lack of intelligent comments and dialog from the audience. Barnyard is a typical elite that looks down on the rest of us, but in reality is nothing more than a pompous, self important, arrogant ass. He’s right about free speech, its allowed him to lie all these years with no consequences.

I don’t support at least 80% of the reforms proposed, and I’m not a fan of Barney Frank. But I have to support him on this one.
If anyone tried to compare anything I was involved in with Adolf Hitler, I’d have the same reaction.
I argued yesterday with a cousin who is a GOP small town Mayor in NJ, that rationing is already a big thing and that a dozen hospitals in her high-income state are paying doctors to shorten Medicare patients visits. Her knee jerk reaction was, “No they don’t.”
I suppressed the desire to get into an “Are you calling me a liar argument?” and simply called up the article on the internet and invited her to read it.
As she expressed surprise I couldn’t help but dig into her with, “Next time, don’t jump to conclusions based on a Sarah Palin’s amount of research.”

I applaud Barney Frank. The type of behavior that has been displayed at these Town Hall Meetings has been very well orchestrated by special interest opponents to Health Care Reform. How can anyone take a question seriously when it involves portraying our President as Hitler? If you have REAL concerns about health care reform, take a moment to get the FACTS about your concerns instead of listening to the outrageous ramblings of opponents.

Nobody answered the question about Barney. What do you think about Barney’s job performance when he was chairperson of the Banking and Housing Committee? Do you think he wrote good laws? If you do, then you must support the end results: people lost their houses because they really could not sustain the monthly notes – they did not qualify to begin with. This in turn help create the housing and banking Bust. So if you like Barney, then you must like what happened in the end.
Answer the question, or keep avoiding it. It’s very telling.

First off- lets get the record straight- It was George Bush (& his mastermind Chaney) that caused our recession) 2 wars and tax breaks to the wealthy.
As for Barney Frank- good for him. Comparing our President with Hitler is a very ignorant thing to do. The Democrats need to get this health care plan passed with or without the Republicans. Do you think that if the Republicans were in charge they would care if the Democrats liked a bill before pushing it through? Wake up people- we are #38 in the world in health care for our people. I say go for a single payer system and let the chips fall where they may.

Posted by: al hayward | August 20, 2009, 2:51 pm 2:51 pm

So you think, Al, that two wrongs make a right? Bush’s attitude of ‘let the chips fall where they lay plan’ was good enough for Bush, so now it’s good enough for the democrats?
I really would like someone to answer my question. Do you think Barney Frank is in any real position to be an expert on how to run things?
The ‘go Barney’ posts are hilarious.
Don’t you see the irony in all of this?
Barney was a VERY big part in helping people buy a house and lose a house all in a very short period of time.
He didn’t care about ‘the people’. He cared to please his companion, the Fannie Mae top exec. Can’t somebody on the democratic side admit that?
Can’t you see the irony now? Barney standing before the people, so pious, so full of himself, he can’t even come up with a clever reply.
I respect Pres. Obama when he speaks. I don’t happen to agree with everything, but he makes a good argument. Poor Barney can’t put two words together that makes any sense at all.
Do you really LIKE Barney and what laws he wrote while chairperson of the banking and housing committee? Really?
If you do, then you are not on the side of all of the people who bought into Barney’s scheme.
AND YOU CALL YOURSELF A DEMOCRAT?

So what that he’s gay? I don’t care.
X-Repub, that sounded like a back-handed compliment for Barney.
Barney is a bum because he represents himself as ‘for the people’. Why don’t you address his actions as Chairperson of the Banking and Housing Laws?
He is two-faced; that’s what he is.
Barney didn’t care about ‘the people’; he only cared about himself and his top exec Fannie Mae friend. It was malfeasance of duty, and now he’s ‘holier than thou’. I just love it.
You know what I love the most? People ignoring the obvious to suit their needs.
You proudly call yourself a democrat?
Well, you’re no better than your arch-enemy Bush. At least Bush was who he was and didn’t pretend to be anything else.

What hitler said should not be quoted out of context. He could potentially be refering to criminals, guilty of the most heinous crimes, and that the state should not spend money on them.
I’m not sure about what you think, but I’m pretty sure the families of the victims of murder, rape etc. would be very upset if their money is spent on keeping that criminal alive in prison.
With regards to the politician’s comment. It is a classic way of “side-lining” questions that I’ve seen a lot of politicians do. The fact that the crowd cheered when they did not realised that a different issue is brought up, is a sad testimony to the intelligence of the crowd, and that no matter how preposterous a request may be made by the common citizen, it is at the end of the day, the duty of a civil servant, to serve the people.

Posted by: Grey Edwards | August 22, 2009, 10:46 am 10:46 am

Really? Health Care needs overhaul? Yep. Should we throw everything away and start with some crazy new single payer system? Nope. But wait! It does not say that in the Bill! Well, it does kind of… Mr Obama and his gaggle of fools, are on tape saying this is how it all starts, you can’t create a single payer over night, you ease the people into it.
Lastly, this gal is a DEMOCRAT, and that part I love. When everyone was screaming GWB is Hitler, the media was silent on it, frank/pelosi and the other idiots sat quietly when this happened. Now? Oh no, that is racism.
Give me a break. Thankfully most people are catching on, even Gov Paterson is now blaming his failures on racism. Want to know why aliens from other planets don’t come to visit? We are so stupid putting these idiots in office, obviously we are not worth anyone’s time! I am joking obviously (have to point this out for Dems and freeloaders since they are so stupid).

The main thing to remember is that all of our “representatives” no matter what party are politicians and are only truly interested in gaining power and keeping it.

All of the blind Barney Frank loving poor souls. Barney Frank does not care about you much more than he cares for his own mother. You guys are so blind for a solution and you think this clown and this administration is going to solve it for you. My neighbor is originally from Ireland. Ireland has the same health care plan that these clowns are trying to shove down our throats. My neighbors brother was on a waiting list for 18 months and almost died twice while waiting because his condition was not priority. This is the health care that these clowns are trying to force in America. If you would just look past the noise. If this is not the plan they propose why does this administration get so defensive when asked a question. Why can’t they answer it with a straight answer. When asked a question if you don’t know the answer tell them you will get back to them. If you are doing the right things for people you will not get offended when asked a tough question. Ask them this “Will they put their families on the health care plan, that they so desperately want to put the rest of America on?” I guess if that question was asked they would beat around it also and say we must be as dumb as a door knob. Wake up people. Do your own homework. Do you really want a government telling you when and where you can get medical help. The reason health care costs are high is the we the people let it get high. It’s called a free market. If you don’t like the price you pay for something you get it else where.

After it is all said and done. This group of our so called leaders of our country, republican and democrat are setting back sucking down cold ones and not even thinking twice about what that lady said or what is best for us. They get together like the old time wrestlers used to do. They talk trash to each other when the camera is on, talk trash to the crowd when they get them fired up. And after the show, lights and camera are off, they are scheming the next trick/show that they can swindle out of the public. They blame each other and the public and they forget that they work for us the people. So we need to get rid of all these three ring circus acts and get politicians that are not out for their own agenda. Read your constitution. Read the Declaration of Independence each day. I do. It will make you see that our government was not designed to operate like this.

What part of his response can accurately be characterized as “growling”? Stupid headline.

Go Barney! I never caught the early part of this before, but does anybody else think it significant that the woman mentioned Lyndon LaRouche? No one else drops that name except his followers, who are the biggest loons on the planet…Glen Beck should make a point of always standing next to one of them, to help him appear sane….

It should be noted this woman is one of Lyndon LaRouche’s crazy followers. They are the ones with the Hitler signs at healthcare rallies. No one but a few college drop outs take LaRouche seriously and they are all completely nuts.
