Fact Check: Can You Keep Your Current Health Plan?
President Obama says if you are happy with your current medical plan, you can keep it under his proposed health care bill — but opponents say that just isn't so. Will the new plan put private insurance companies out of business? David Wright checked the facts on last night's World News. Take a look…

So, the right wing nutcase argument needs to stop!!
Posted by: hang | August 12, 2009, 11:40 am 11:40 am
Okay, you get to keep your healthcare plan. Even with tax breaks/credits and/or the threat of penalties,
it might be ‘cheaper’ for some companies to take the penalties and drop health care for their employees.
If dropped by their employers, would the employees now be liable to purchase their own health care through the government (or private)?
My question is: How much would this cost per month?
Also, there’s a question about a penalty on individuals who are not enrolled in a health care plan.
What if that individual is working and has no plan with his/her company AND
cannot afford to purchase it privately or through the government?
I hope Pres. Obama realizes that not everyone can afford to spend $400 a month, $300, $200, or even $l00 per month extra because they just don’t have it. Rent/utiities/transportation/food would come first. So, the person makes a little too much for free health care; the employer does not offer health care.
What is that person to do? Will he or she now have a ‘penalty’ to pay to add insult to injury?
Does Obama have any thoughts on this?
Or is this considered a ‘nutcase argument’?
(tell that to the people who are caught in the middle.)

Great and fair reporting, I wished more of the media would begin challenging some of this misinformation.

Let the American public read the bill instead of keeping it a secret…then let the American public VOTE on it as most American’s do not trust Government to make decisions.

Perhaps you’ve seen this circulating with a picture of Charlie Gibson and the President:
FINALLY…THE $64,000 QUESTION WAS ASKED…YESTERDAY ON “ABC-TV” (BETTER KNOWN AS THE ALL BARRACK CH ANN EL)
DURING THE “NETWORK SPECIAL ON HEALTH CARE”….OBAMA WAS ASKED:
“MR. PRESIDENT WILL YOU AND YOUR FAMILY GIVE UP YOUR CURRENT HEALTH CARE PROGRAM AND JOIN THE NEW ‘UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE PROGRAM’ THAT THE REST OF US WILL BE ON ????”….. (BET YOU ALREADY KNOW THE ANSWER)…
THERE WAS A STONEY SILENCE AS OBAMA IGNORED THE QUESTION AND CHOSE NOT TO ANSWER IT !!!…
I know I saw this live, but cannot find it on ABCNEWS.COM. I know that the President has never had a moment of “stoney silence” in any interview. His answer was pretty good if my memory is correct. Please post a link to this interview.

David Wright, your piece is a bit simplistic and misleading.
Do yourself a favor and mark your calendar for this date 3 years from now.
When time passes and you check the actual figures there will be a large percentage of American Workers on the Government Plan.
Most of them will be the folks in Government Jobs or who have a Government Pension Plans. People like Police Officers, Fire Fighters and Government Service Workers.
This Health Care Reform is necessary to save our cities and municipalities from bankruptcy.
The government needs to reduce the health care costs they are liable for. They are going to do this by reducing what they will pay and by reducing coverage.
Now if they could just get a bill that doesn’t spill over into the private sector I think they could get it passed.

Every economic book should contain the following as an opening flyleaf:
For any entity (individual, family, business, town, county, state, country, corporation):
((Assets – Expenditures + Earnings) over time from creation to the present) must be gte zero.
Ignore this basic law and pay the consequences of economic and entity demise. Otherwise, discuss trivial economic details to distraction without encouraging understanding and without ever solving anything.
Where does this put Obama and all his snake oil?

Am surprise that some people don’t seem to see the goodness of this programme their government is introducing. I think the myopic few are not telling the masses their inward fears about how Obama will become more popular if he goes through with this plan, because they choose to play politics rather than see simple reason, that this is very helpful and it saves lives. They should come to Britain and ask us what health care is all about and what they are missing. It’s really a shame that people should not embrace the programme and stop playing politics and allowing the insurance companies determine their fate. Here in Britain,no one is loosing their sleep over medical bill, and we get the best when it comes to health care.It is true that change is always difficult, but now,it seems that politics has taken over the importance of the programme and people are getting only the wrong informations about the programme. If they don’t get it done now, then America should forget it forever, cos, the arguement will always kill the efforts,no matter who is the president.

“You get to keep your health plan.”
Still: What if our insurance company can’t conform with the five-year rule plan?
What if our employer takes the penalty and dumps us on the government’s plan?
What would the monthly premium be for that individual and/or family?
What if I’m on unemployment or just don’t have the monthly premium?
Am I then penalized for not having insurance?
What exactly would this gov. insurance cover? Is there a cap at anytime during my lifetime? (If they say, “No.”, that would be hard to believe. Think about it: an unlimited amount of money can be spent on you forever as long as you live?) – Yeah, I believe you.
They’re crying like a big dog now about money. Do you really believe the government wants to fork over MORE money per person? That’s what Obama and the dems are saying: “Never a cap!”
That, however, is not what Obama was saying a short time ago with David Leonhardt (the grandma broke a hip story) Obama said that the ‘model was not sustainable’. In other words, not everyone will be able to get the needed treatment, because you can’t keep the money flowing freely because it cannot be ‘kept up’. Obama would, however, have paid for the hip replacement: “Because that’s my Grandmother.”
The above does not really answer any questions. “You get to keep your health plan” statement offers no details.

Next time, I’ll ask tweety bird.
I just wish the government – our government would be straight forward and actually say it out loud.
If they’re ‘so proud’, then say it out loud.
Why do you think there are Democratic Senators going around having ‘town hall meetings’? They know that this is an emotional issue and they are counting on people to be emotional. It clouds the issues.
What is needed are articulate clear-thinking people to go to these town hall meetings and ask clear and concise questions. Stop the noise and let these senators give you details. See if they actually can quote details that are in the bill, and not simply give statements like, “You can keep your health plan.”

If you think you’re employers are going to be able to keep up with the extortion of the rising insurance premiums, I have a bridge to sell you. Don’t you realize yet that a MAJOR part of this recession’s depth and strength is directly traceable to exploding healthcare costs?
Almost every single post I’ve read from Canadians and Brits tells us they would not trade their healthcare for ours for anything. Ours costs more per person than ANY other advanced country in the world. Our drugs cost more than 70% of any other country in the world. There are NO DEATH PANELS in France, Canada, or England. People in those countries do not have to fear choosing between healthcare and death as they do here when an insurance company summarily drops one’s coverage. People there do not have to worry they will end up penniless in a nursing home because they can’t get coverage due to “pre-existing conditions” such as I have to look forward to. People there are not last in a list of 19 advanced countries in needless deaths due to needless delays of tests and treatments CAUSED BY INSURANCE COMPANIES. All the fears the people have are already happening, and most of them would disappear with good reform. By the way, THERE IS NO HEALTHCARE program passed yet. There are still things to be improved about it.
Posted by: Igor | August 12, 2009, 6:24 pm 6:24 pm
ddg. If the staged disruptions would stop long enough, the people who know what the h____ they are talking about could be heard and could address these issues. But the plants, and many of them are just that, have no intention of allowing a civil, in-depth discourse to happen because insurance companies want that of all things to happen the least.
Posted by: Igor | August 12, 2009, 6:27 pm 6:27 pm
Why shouldn’t the insurance companies be called to task for (1) raising premiums at an above inflationary rate every year, (2) refusing to cover people with pre-existing conditions from everything such as asthma to any form of chronic, long-lasting cancer, (3) telling doctors what tests and procedures they will cover and limiting, at times, therefore what doctors can actually do for some of their patients, (4) dropping people who become very sick for any length of time, leaving them to choose between bankruptcy and death, (5) interfering with the tests and procedures needed to stop a decease in time, (6) determining which doctors or health systems a person can go to (Yes, this is already happening with some insurances.
Yes, there may be some flaws in the current reform plans, but they aren’t nearly as serious as these issues with people who care much more for profits than patients. WHY AREN’T SOME OF THESE SO-CALLED “PROTESTERS” BRINGING UP THE WRECKAGE THAT IS ALREADY HEALTHCARE? COULD IT BE THAT’S NOT WHAT THEY’RE BEING PAID FOR?

I listened to the ABC news medical commentator, a distinguished-appearing avuncular type. He reassures us that “Medicare has worked very well.” This is disingenuous at best, and downright stupid at worst – it sounds like he’s been programmed to deliver Obama doublespeak. Medicare is a shambles; many physicians won’t take new Medicare patients; the bureaucratic paperwork attendant on any sort of Medicare transaction makes doctors lose interest. As someone stated on the same program, we have unprecedented debt and no way of paying for things our politicians, Obama included, love to promise us. They put Madoff in jail for running a Ponzi scheme, but our government officials make him look like an amateur, when it comes to pyramid (buy now, pay later) schemes.

One of the dilemmas of our current system of employer-based health insurance: The breadwinner of the family pays half the costs of his employer-provided health insurance and it covers the whole family. If any member of the family gets ill, as long as the breadwinner is still working, life goes on. If the breadwinner loses his job – the whole family loses their insurance. Or they can pay COBRA at TWICE the price they were paying through their employer ( remember – no money coming in now either). Or if the breadwinner is the family member who gets sick and can’t work, how long does the employer continue to pay the insurance cost? THey lose their insurance and their house eventually, and with a pre-existing condition he can’t even get coverage again on his own. I saw a documentary about health care and one case involved a working man who was in danger of losing his foot. The doctor said he could save the foot if the man stayed off his feet for three months. The dilemma: if he stays off work for three months he loses his insurance. The man actually chose to have his foot amputated instead, so that he could return to work sooner with a prosthetic foot and keep his job and insurance. Employer-based care has lots of drawbacks – some noted above. Also, it is a disincentive to job creation because every position created is very expensive ( hence, so many part-time jobs with no benefits these days – and I would do the same thing as an employer). We need sensible reform, not NO reform. Right nhow all I hear from the right is “no reform”….can’t we have rational discussion and make big improvements in the USA or are we going to throw all reform away because we’re afraid an illegal, or a lazy-butt is going to get something for nothing? Can we please hear better proposals instead of just damning the present one? Offering a better proposal is the right way – shouting down opponents is shameful and counter-productive. I have checked the HR 3200 sections that are purported to create death panels, fund abortions, let the government have access to your bank account, kill all private plans, etc..and these outrageous things just aren’t there. If this plan is so terribly flawed, why do some people have to make up lies to criticize it? My Republicans are looking like people who belive in flying saucers and think Elvis is still alive. I’m embarrassed by these antics.
Posted by: ed | August 13, 2009, 12:56 am 12:56 am
Ed-apparently you were not looking very hard at HR3200. Also, if wording forbidding money for abortions is not there, than there is coverage for abortion. That happened with Medicaid until the Hyde amendment. Stop being so disengenous.
I know we need health care reform, but an overhaul of the entire system with hundreds of pages of rules by a pro-death party that doesn’t even take in consideration for tort reform or having insurance companies stop excluding covering pre-existing conditions or rescinding coverage would be more reasonable. Obama and Congress aren’t even reading the proposal/bills and are just urging us to pass something just to pass something right away. I am a democrat, but after five years on this plan, the government will be controlling everyone. Can’t you see that? A small group of unelected people who might not even be doctors will be telling you how to live and die. I want change, but we are at these meetings angry because they will not listen to us. They won’t come up with another plan that isn’t such a large experiment. APPARENTLY, you didn’t read Tweetybird earlier.
So we jump out of the fire into the frying pan!!! They want to past this without telling us what is in it. Too bad the bill is on the internet because that is why so many of us are upset and angry. Obama and his reps won’t tell us any specifics. They have to keep it broad to fool all those who love our handsome president. He lies and we can’t trust him. Gee, I wish we could. We do need some kind of health insurance/cost reform. But, I refuse to have a Czar telling me how to live or die.
I need to change to independent because neither party is listening to the people anymore. Obama/democrats think they know what we need and that we are stupid. This getting this bill passed right away is fear mongering and you bought right into it.
Obama received $80 billion from the large pharmaceuticals not to engage in negotiation on prescription pricing. How are we going to keep costs down? That is right up there with tort reform and bad insurance policies the government could employ to keep costs down. We don’t want unelected, illegal Czars either!!! WAKE UP AMERICA!!!
