Fact Check: Euthanasia and Health Care Reform

Kate Snow sets the record straight on last night's World News — what's fact and what's fiction about euthanasia and Obama's health care bill?  Take a look…

Finally, the truth, thank you. As a senior citizen I was concerned.

Anyone who thinks that government cares about the aged, is worse than naive.

I found the Fact Check to be a Fact Farce. You opened with a statement from Sarah Palin. Why, the Backwoods Barbie Wannabe is of no importance, she is no longer an elected offical and I for one am sick of hearing about her. Why the media insists on putting her on a pedistal evey chance they get is beyond me. She’s nothing and her opinion doesn’t amount to “a hill of beans” (Sorry Bogey). Your efforts should have been concentrated on the facts and explaining them properly, which you did not do. If your report is a Fact Check, then give us the correct facts and elminate the political partisian tribe.

You do notice that at the end of this report they stated the bottom line:
There is a $7,000 average savings.
(I have a feeling that is only the beginning of the “Savings”.)
Are they saying this ‘consultation’ is not ‘cost driven’? They tippied their hand at the end of that report.
Can you honestly say that NEVER will there be a consultation where the patient is steered to hospice instead of having an operation, or dialysis, or an expensive new medicine, or procedure that the PATIENT desires?
I can see both sides of the coin. Money does not grow on trees; at some point ‘enough is enough’. I, too, sing the praises of hospice and having a living will, etc.
However, this still appears to be a subtle way to influence people to stop medical care and to ‘move on’, so to speak.
I don’t believe in scare tactics for EITHER side. I don’t care for opponents of this bill to use scare tactics. However, I also don’t care for the other side to use ‘a hurry up and sign’ tactic either.
Facts and statistics can indeed be spun in any fashion for either side.
Yes, the dollar sign must be looked at in order to survive.
However, I believe the patient’s rights must be looked at and NOT influenced by anyone.
Hospice is good; a living will is good; consultation with your doctor is good.
Just be careful that the patient is not influenced when he or she is in a weakened state. That, my friend, should be the bottom line. However, this whole thing smells like an accountant’s dream: TO SAVE MONEY.
Can you honestly say it’s not?
(I’m not against saving money.
Remember EVERYONE, sooner or later, will be sitting in that chair facing his or her doctor or a ‘Consultant’.)
Will money be top of your list then?
Don’t forget to ask how much premium will a Single Person pay for this Governmental Health Care Package and WHAT will it actually cover?
Nobody is really talking about that.
Obama’s office reported that it will cost a SINGLE PERSON $400 per month.
What about your spouse and kids?
Is that considered cheap?
I also read that a penalty will be handed if you DON’T have health insurance (at work or private or government)
Check it out for yourself.

What a stupid debate. ALL the elderly are already covered by government health care (Medicare) and have been for decades.

Posted by: jhw539 | August 11, 2009, 12:42 pm 12:42 pm

Yeah, we know that Medicare is available (for decades). That’s a given.
It’s not about that.

Your Fact Chaeck was not specific or correct. Post the specific parts of the bill and then state what the myth is. You never quoted the specific part of the bill that supported your statement that seniors would be the ones to initiate the consultation on end of life options. The bill states that it is manditory every 5 years. Get it straight read section 1233. ABC news continues to lean left on every issue.

The opponents of health care reform are funded by the devious GOP. We have to ask, “why are so angry and frightened by the prospect of health care reform?” Is it because the Republicans are angry the Dems will finally do what the GOP would NOT do, improve and reform health care? Let’s face it folks, Congress has had FIFTY years to enact health care reform but since many of our politicians are in the back pockets of the “special interest” groups they just stalled the reform. Why not? They are covered by a “government run” health care funded at the expense of the over-worked taxpayer. Profit has no place in the health care industry–at least not when the taxpayer is duped into insuring the Pharma/Insurance industry continues to rake in billions of dollar in subsidies at taxpayer expense and to the detriment of seniors, the elderly and those who can least afford it. Those billions would fund health care reform to insure all Americans have health care and not just the wealthy few. So, after waiting FIFTY years, please let’s rush into health care reform.

Posted by: Ann Geary | August 11, 2009, 2:13 pm 2:13 pm

Good for you, Ann Geary. The forces behind these so-called Town Hall “protests” have been evident to all who really wanted to see that their purpose had little to do with reforming health care but with preserving a status quo that made insurance companies’ PROFITS among the highest last quarter in the middle of a recession that has been bankrupting people who get sick and can no longer afford their insurance. THIS IS JUST WRONG.

If government cared at all about Seniors they would not have spent billions on ACORN, La Raza, and Hamas and would have spent those billions bailing out the 600,000 who are in foreclosure. If they cared about seniors they would come to the aid of the 5.4 million that lost most of their lifetime savings instead of spending billions on the Wild Horse Act of 2009, the Wyoming toad recovery program and the Salt Marsh Harvest Mouse.

Why didn’t Carter reform Health Care?
Why didn’t Clinton reform Health Care?
just asking

After living and working for more than 50 years in the Mediterranean basin and central Europe, I have witnessed how post-WWII nations have eclipsed the US in the area of universal health care. It works…!
Even with a strong specialized clinic and medical care infrastructure, an acceptable minimum health care system has prospered and improves with time.
Why are we so far behind…!

Constance:
Why confuse the basic issue…!? Our society is in dire need of an admittedly LATE and COMPLEX reform…! This will require great efforts and some “sacrifices”. We are far behind others who have fewer resources. Evidently GREED is the name of the game.

Posted by: ED | August 11, 2009, 4:28 pm 4:28 pm

Well: No reply….
The man in the street is helpless when it comes to basic health care. Many have died in the street or while waiting for attentions. Look what happened with the Medicare prescription drug fiasco. Add to that the physician’s bloc and an over-powerful private clinic resistance to social mediciane and you have GREED again..combined with premature death.

Posted by: ED | August 11, 2009, 4:59 pm 4:59 pm

Plain and simple:
How much would the premium run for a single person (spouse/kid)?
What if your job does not cover health insurance and you struggle to pay your rent, etc. Will you really be penalized if you can’t afford the gov. health care premium? What would be your option to avoid penalty?
Would that ‘Consultant’ that they want me to see educate me about new medicines, procedures, etc. to extend my life if I wish? Who is that Consultant working for? What is that Consultant’s main mission: to do what I really want to do or to push hospice, thereby, saving money?
What’s more likely to be the answer:
The Consultant is my advocate or the Consultant’s job is to keep the cost down?
(Of course, at some point in a person’s life, the end draws near. I believe in the good works of Hospice Care. They are usually very good. However, what if a person is not ‘ready’ to let go and would indeed like extraordinary measures to take place?
What if a child gets ill or hurt? Would it still be the parents who decide how far to go?
These concerns are real. They are not made up; they are not hysterical. These are real concerns.
If you were facing that Consultant at the end of your life or your spouse’s life, or child’s life, what would be your concerns?
I would like to see the answers to the above questions.

I’ve been a viewer of ABC World News for some 40+ years now. But oh how it’s become so biased and agenda-driven of late. To say that Kate Snow gave an honest fact check is laughable. What a bill explicitly says and what will happen in practice are two different things. Instead of presenting just the facts and/or an honest & reasoned analysis of what may actually happen, Ms. Snow presents another ABC-driven opinion instead of a report with integrity. ABC News- get back to honest, unbiased reporting!!!

Posted by: Don in Campbell | August 11, 2009, 7:09 pm 7:09 pm

Those who keep blaming the bad old GOP need to keep current–the Dems don’t need the GOP, they have the votes to pass this disaster,if they really wanted to, but they know we are finding out what is in it and they don’t want all the blame!!!

Posted by: ssmith | August 11, 2009, 7:16 pm 7:16 pm

How does Kate know? If it doesn’t mean what it says why does it have 10 or so pages devoted to the subject?
Why has ABC signed on with the president to try to convince an irate public that this plan does not mean what it says?
It sound like a stretch to me! Who wrote the bill anyway, if it doesn’t mean what it rather clearly says then shouldn’t it be scrapped rather than the prez, the wild eyed Pelosi and now the media trying to ram down our throats?

Posted by: Ed Taylor | August 11, 2009, 7:51 pm 7:51 pm

In your fact check on tonight’s news, August 11, concerning keeping your own coverage – specifically page 16 of the health care bill. You failed to mention the limitation on new enrollment:
(1) LIMITATION ON NEW ENROLLMENT.—
(A) IN GENERAL.—Except as provided in
this paragraph, the individual health insurance issuer offering such coverage does not enroll any individual in such coverage if the first effective date of coverage is on or after the first
day of Y1.
The limitation it refers to is coverage of dependents.
In other words, after the first day of the year the bill goes into effect, no company will be able to sell you individual coverage. So, after this day, this means the insurance companies cannot grow their business. It is eventually going to drive all the insurance companies out of business, and all that will be left is the “public option”. If you do not have or lose your coverage, or it changes, you CANNOT get individual coverage – you MUST go into the Government plan.
When you check your facts – check them all, not just the ones that support your view.

Attn Charles Gibson – ABC World NEWS – On Monday’s Show about what Health Care Plan is not supposed to be – saying all the fears are groundless esp. on treating the elderly (as to end of life options) – what is missing from this media report is the fact that it could very well LEAD to problems of interpretation by healthcare industry. The Health Insurance Companies could use the fact that a Doctor recommended something different in order to with-hold coverage if patient’s family chooses to keep someone alive. It is the threat of what the formal Discussion by Doctor could lead to that is the problem & how Insurance will be only too happy to pull the funds from someone or give less than adequate care because elderly. Most of us cannot pay out of our pocket if that happens. Concerned Citizen for the Future 8/12/09

Posted by: Concerned Citizen for the Future | August 12, 2009, 3:09 am 3:09 am

What some seem to imply is that after many years of paying supplemental coverage (i.e. Plan B) one might find that his wife & family might not be covered under the conditions of the reform…! Comments, anyone?

Posted by: ED | August 12, 2009, 4:25 am 4:25 am

I see on blogs where many have educated thereselves with the health care at hand. I also heard on CNN where a young woman was opposed to this Health Care and was BARELY making payments herself under the health Care she now has. She was self employed and made a statement about the Government could not run anything that she knew of. Our Soldiers fight for her behind every day! I have Health Care (Tricare) due to my husbands years of service by him serving in the Military…and let me tell you it is the best! I also have Medicare which is also government run, it also is the best! I am also on Remicade for Rhuematory Arthritis and other medications. I pray this woman has to NEVER experience paying for a REMICADE TREATMENT! It is VERY COSTLY! Some Insurance companies do not cover it due to the cost. I love what I have and if she is so concerned maybe she needs to check out my story and others who have a Government run insurance before she becomes deathly sick!

I am so disappointed in ABC. I was truly a huge fan of Charlie Gibson and ABC News until this past election. As an intelligent, informed businesswoman, I am truly amazed at the biased news coverage on ABC, which is slanted towards the Democrats. I do not even turn on ABC News any more, as I do not feel that I will get fair reporting. Instead, I listen to, read and watch several other news sources in order to try to get a balanced view. Read the bill without prejudice, people. It will scare you to death. Health care reform is needed, but this is not the way.

Posted by: Marjorie | August 12, 2009, 1:24 pm 1:24 pm

o.m.g. The suspicion and fear. This is amazing. This “death panel” garbage is just the tip of the fear iceberg. Have we lost our collective minds? Do some people in this country actually want to see Obama fail so much that they are prepared to do ANYTHING and stoop to any depth to see that happen? People, get a grip – please. Start by reading the bill. It’s all over the Web. Get your OWN information. Don’t rely on the special interest groups of EITHER side or the media for information. Get it for yourself. It’s out there. It’s available. If you’re reading this you have the access you need to get it. Don’t let yourselves get swept up in the whirlwind of rhetoric and bs. Stay focused and do your own darned research.

Posted by: Gentry | August 12, 2009, 6:58 pm 6:58 pm

There is NO Death Panels -anyone that believes that – I have a bridge for sale in Boston…and a toll booth.. People have to start thinking with their brains ..
