Obama to Meet Gaddafi?

ABC's Kirit Radia and Karen Travers report: It could happen at the UN next month. The US has called a rare Head of State meeting of the Security Council to discuss non-proliferation. Libya is currently a member of the 15-member council, so it is conceivable that both President Obama and Libyan leader Muammar al-Gaddafi are in the room at the same time. The US has held Libya, which gave up its nuclear program in 2003 for incentives by the US and others, as an example to countries like Iran and North Korea that have their own nuclear aspirations. The US has since sought a better relationship with Libya, looking to increase both security and commercial ties. But, given the frosty state of relations in recent days between Washington and Tripoli over Gaddifi’s jubilant welcome home for the convicted Lockerbie bomber, it will be interesting to see if and how the two leaders interact at the summit. Worth noting, too, that Libya takes over the rotating presidency of the UN General Assembly for September. In an on camera briefing yesterday, White House Deputy Press Secretary Bill Burton said that while Gadhafi will be at the UN General Assembly in September, there is no scheduled meeting between him and Obama and there are no plans to schedule one. "As for seeing Gadhafi at the General Assembly, as you know, this year Gadhafi is the head of the General Assembly. And so, I assume that at some point they'll run into each other, but there's no scheduled meeting and no plans to schedule one," he said.

The usual poor excuse for journalism from Karen Travers.

Sure… this pres.needs to meet gaddafi…
maybe they will keep him in libya!
I left the party when he started lying to the public. Does he and the rest of the “demo”.party actually think they can continue to LIE to the public and we are so stupid that we believe them??? I guess so…they just don’t stop.

I generally don’t comment on reporting, but this is an inexcusably misleading title. The authors should be reprimanded.ABC needs to work on accuracy, not drama. I will not read any articles by either author in the future.

Any of you that have read my posts know that I am quite conservative and disagree with most of what Obama has done to this country. I’ve been in some pretty heated discussions with some of the more liberal counterparts. That being said, my first reaction to this article was…”Well, there’s another stupid thing he’s doing”…..but then when i read the article, i got quite pi**ed. The press does NOT need to resort to this type of misleading journalism. No, the title of this article is a down right LIE, and the author and/or editor should be fired for dishonesty. It is disgusting. Obama does enough stupid stuff on his own and does not need the BS of this sensationalism to make him appear even more inept. The author should be ashamed of herself.

WHY DO YOU NEED TO MEET A CONFIRMED TERRORIST? I remember when late Pres. Ronald Reagan BOMBED Gaddafis’ house, because he was a TERRORIST!! He has MURDERED hundreds (and God knows, there maybe more than hundreds) of innocent lives! DOES ANYBODY REMEMBER THIS? Hey, Obama — borrowing more money from them too to get America out of debt from another UNWORTHY NATION or are you trying to win over the hearts and minds of the world to set up your own KINGDOM?

Maybe the Lockerbie bomber will be there and they can all have a beer together or something. Terrible.

Posted by: Better way | August 25, 2009, 10:26 pm 10:26 pm

Oh boy, maybe we can all have a beer in the rose garden! I’m sure the idiot press will find some way to spin this garbage to make Obama look like some sort of big ‘peace maker’. He is the Anointed One, after all.

This would not be their first meeting. Remember when he went top Lyhbia with ouis Farrakahan to get molneyh for the Black Army? Why don’t you check your facts?

I once “met” the Dalai Lama: We were in the same city together. Oh yeah, then there was the time I “met” LBJ when he came to the Air Force base our family was stationed at. Then there was my “meeting with” U.S. Grant when I visited Washington DC a couple of years ago. I am glad this journalist so liberally widened the definition of a meeting. I feel like a jetsetter now.

I think Pres. Obama should greet and talk with all world leaders included Gaddafi. This world would be a better place if leaders start talking with one another.

Posted by: van | August 26, 2009, 12:31 am 12:31 am

President Obama and Libyan leader Muammar-al Gaddafi are leaders of their own individual countries. The U.S. government did not incarerate the accused Lockerbie bomber in a U.S. court. Though the accused and released bomber received a hero’s welcome in Libia, should it be the posture of the president to rant and rave to the country that released him and the country that received him? I think not. It is painful to lose family, non-family and friends through acts of violence. It is better to work at non-violent ways to prevent violence in our global society. That work will never be accomplished when those that have been done harm will not unite with all those touched by the same violence. To unite and support reputable organizations that have been working to stop such violoence throughout the decades.

i think that he shouldn’t be greeted by obama or any other U.S.leader Instead ship him home.but think our leaders should worry about our country Instead having summits ,taking trips to other countrys worry about there warefare instead ours at the taxpayers expense and stop trying to convince the american public about this health care debate like it a run for a office in washington just do something all ready the working class is the real people suffering not the middle class or upper class, but no one likes to talk about us poor people. we elected new leaders but it looks like the same thing like the past they talk a good game to get in chair like the others. I say lets help the econmony lets cut ours leaders salary put it back in the country, in tell the country gets back on it feet then we can see how long it take our leaders to get focus on the country instead other things like summits, debates, or any other things so they can go back to there fancy lives. cut there money i bet the country get back up quick.

If Obama goes through with meeting with Khadafi, his political clout will being to unravel even more. There was no doubt some serious money involved with the Scottish Government’s release of a mass murderer, as well as Oil and gas rights concessions. How many of the prisoners releases from Scottlands prisons have been mass murderers? It is a travesty of justice, and only money could make someone release a person of this Murderous stature. He was received as a Hero in his country of Lybia, which proves they can still not be trusted. On state TV they said which plane he was on and the time that the plane was to land. It was not kept private so that he could slip in unnoticed, as it would have been done here in the States. Everyone that I know is outraged, and if Obama meets with Khadafi, he can kiss his second term GOODBYE! I urge all Americans to boycott Scottish, British, and Lybian goods (BP oil), because America does not have the balls to put sanctions on the Brits, Scotts, but maybe on the Lybians, but I doubt it. I still cannot fathom letting a mass murderer go so he can be received as a hero at home, and die with dignity in his home country. Did he give those he killed any dignity? This does give comfort to other terrorists, and it says that if you kill people on a plane in Scottland, there is a chance of a reprieve if caught, and before they die, they can be welcomed home as a hero, and tell others how to do it in the future. IT’s no wonder the SCottish government do not have their independence from England yet, and this situation is just another reason not to trust people in power. Massive amounts of money is involved in this exchange, as well as oil and gas rights, becaue that is the only way to be able to put up with the fallout from allowing that to happen. I dare the British Government to denounce Scottland very hard, because if they do, the Scottish Government would spill the beans on the deal that was struck, and why he was released. Why was the Prisioner not released into American Custody, since most of those killed were Americans, and he could have died in a prison here in America?!!!! Come on people, let’s open our eyes, and see the money it took to release this Mass Murderer on Compassionate grounds. That’s like the Iraqi’s saying that they will let Sadam Hussein live because he has prostate cancer, and they want him to die with dignity…..PLEASE! Consumers, boycott everything Scottish and British (British Petroleum gas)! Thanks.

While it was another country that let the bomber out of Scottland, it was the choice of Libya to keep it confidential, which they agreed to, or play it up in the “IN YOUR FACE” which has been the way of these folks for quite a while, it was wrong. We might have to forgive, we might want to work in peaceful ways to accomplish cooperation, but the reality is things like Darfur and other really evil events would not be stopped without Sheer force! The arrogance of so many non free forces in the world, deem that we do not close our eyes! That arrogance costs many their lives.
It was immoral to let that man go free in Scottland. Just like many other murderers who kill. Sure they are sorry, turn themselves around, but you can never bring back the dead, and they should not be given their liberty, even if they get cancer or something. Is anyone not seeing the precident it sets?
Insanity and dangerous, as evidenced by many GTMO detainees released only to go back into the field to kill more of our soldiers. It makes our word worthless!

Please, people of America, understand that the people of Scotland are disgusted by the release of Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi. Our justice system is a joke, and there are many problems here with guilty people being treated far too leniently. But this decision is beyond belief! I wish we had real justice like yourselves in the US, and then maybe we wouldn’t have so many social problems at home. I love the USA, please don’t think we back this decision at all! Thank you America

the 5th horseman looks great and kicking ……….
the iron first has made him calmer now than ever………..
given up on the idea of mass weapons…..
The libyian people are much better off without alignning themselves to their
power structure.
Non-alignment makes the population think

I am not a fan of Obama, but this is clearly dishonest and poor reporting. It is not fair to Obama or his administration. It is also terrible timing and trying to make Obama look like he wants to warm up to Ghaddafi right after his disgusting show of “welcome home” to a convicted killer. ABC should be embarrassed and get rid of the author or change the title.

Membership of a legal grouping requires attendances and less proxy. So it is at Court, facility visits, conferences, receptions, meetings…All for the sufficiency of resolution put into action as par please act. Obama will meet whoever his planning committee has arranged for – perhaps some might be impromptu in acceptances, knowledge and empathetic sympathy. What were the issue-blog-comments anyway?

Obama and Gaddafi are like He- goat and the master that grows beards together in the same house, the goat will fee he is the master but on the market day the butcher determines the master by paying price for one of the two.

ABC and Fox news always leave out or add words to their news…So what else is new..They have the used politics when it was not even necessary..They hate the democrats..They all put themselves, (the Republicans) as saviors our country…What they did to help Bush, we do not need any more saving…we need a cleansing of Washington on both sides of the street….I am so dis satisfied with Washington and thier playing games with the American people…I do my part by letter writing, e mailing both sides of the isle…So instead of griping on here, let them know personally how you feel…Something has to be done, or we will have a revolt in this country that we have never seen…People are fed up…The Blog is alright to be positive…but hitting each other is not the answer..Thank you….
