Serena Williams’ Second Try: ‘I want to sincerely apologize’

Serena Williams is apologizing.  In her initial statement Williams said she "handled the situation poorly."  Now she's going further:  "I want to sincerely apologize first to the lines woman, Kim Clijsters, the USTA (U.S. Tennis Association) and mostly tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst…I'm a woman of great pride, faith and integrity, and I admit when I'm wrong." By now, even if you're not a tennis fan, you've heard about Williams' tirade.  It cost her a point, the match, $10,000 and possible further punishment.  The head of the US Open addressed those who view the $10,000 as incredibly lenient when he said "the process isn't over". On her blog Williams offers a "Press Statement Amendment": Hey guys!!! I want to amend my press statement of yesterday, and want to make it clear as possible – I want to sincerely apologize FIRST to the lines woman, Kim Clijsters, the USTA, and tennis fans everywhere for my inappropriate outburst.  I'm a woman of great pride, faith and integrity, and I admit when I'm wrong.  I need to make it clear to all young people that I handled myself inappropriately and it's not the way to act — win or lose, good call or bad call in any sport, in any manner.  I like to lead by example. We all learn from experiences both good and bad.  I will learn and grow from this, and be a better person as a result. Xxxx, S

Williams’ sincerity on this 2nd apology attempt is very touching.

billp, the key here is that it was a “2nd” attempt and only comes after near universal disapproval of what she did and no acceptance of her 1st, half hearted apology.

I’m trying to understand this, it took Serena two attempts to properly apologize?
Did she “fault” on the first attempt?

Posted by: Noz | September 14, 2009, 5:21 pm 5:21 pm

I agree with you, JR. This is totally about the PR. I don’t believe for a minute that she is truly sorry. In fact, I don’t think she believes she did anything wrong. Some wackado’s are calling for a permanent ban from the sport, which is ridiculous, but I do think she should be fined HEAVILY, not the pocket changes she’s already been fined, and that she should be banned from next year’s US Open. Again, her apology didn’t have any ring of sincerity to it.

Banned from the Open next year? Get a grip people, would anyone have ever said to ban McEnroe, Connor or Safin…NO. This has been blown out of proportion because Serena is a woman. OMG, a women who really lets her feelings be known. She was wrong to direct her anger at the line judge, she’s apologized, she’s been fined. Let it go.

I was being sarcastic when I said her sincerity in the 2nd apology was touching. It’s clear to me that she didn’t mean it at all.

We have childish antics of the right giving grief to EVERYTHING Obama does, but where is the outrage?
Serena goes off and all of a sudden people act like she killed a damn child?!!!
She’s apologized and got reprimanded way more than any other tennis player would have received. Get over it!!

She probably saw the replay and realized the line judge was right! I’d say she is probably more than a little embarrassed, but it’s over. Let her move on.

Was McEnroe, Connor and Safin punished so severly for the inappropriate out bursts on the court. Are we sure the level of punishment for this admitted inappropriate behavior isn’t about gender or race? Rules and punishment differ for people depending on who you are!

Let her move on! She was emotionally caught up in the moment. She seems like a genuinely nice person to me.

Serena did what many pro athelets do when they are getting beat at their craft. They get upset and a small spark causes a big fire. Whos to say we would not do the same given the same circumstances. Boy!are we quick to judge or what?

Be serious!!This behavior is inexcusable!! If you’re upset with a call, you don’t behave like a threatening savage. No one has the right EVER to physically or verbally threaten someone else. Serena is disgracefully WRONG and should be suspended!!!! A fine of $10,000 is like $10.00 to her. This would never have been permitted in the past. It is totally and fully unacceptable and WE should not accept behavior like this EVER!!!

She basically rolled her eyes throughout the original press conference. When asked what she had said, she acted like she did not know what the reporter was talking about. Then she stated, “Didn’t you hear?” Then she claimed to not remember. The scond apology reeks of forced compliance. I think once she realized that she could be banned from the next Grand Slam tournament, she decided to write up something. I would like to see her do the apology in person. The blog apology (see Kanye West) is pretty pathertic. For all we know, the star’s publisists are writing them.

Unbelievable, this country is so tolerent of poorly poised professionals,
These so called sports stars have the audacity to “lead by example” what a crock of P R. Its about time the people take back dignity and integrity in all arenas of professionalism. If it were an average individual, they would have been thrown out. Money, Power and Greed, are never a equal playing field. take your shot !

In these terrible economic times it is incredibly frustrating to watch an incredibly pampered, wealthy person, like Serena Williams, pick up her toys and walk off the court because things weren’t going her way. I’d love to trade places with you Serena. I’m 50 years old and have been unemployed for over a year. You have forgotten how fortunate you are. If I behaved like you did in my workplace I’d be fired. I think the average American is getting sick and tired of the antics of these rich, spoiled people who have forgotten basic manners and good sportsmanship.

everyone get a grip. everyone has lost their temper before. no person is perfect. the only perfect person I know about was Jesus Christ and he no longer walks this earth. The call was incorrect and she lost the match. They wanted Clisjter or however you spell her name to win. Clearly people aren’t looking at the whole picture. Think about what the Williams Sisters have done for the sport of tennis. Weigh the pros and cons and you have your answer. Everyone on here grow up. And the 50 year old man who said he would lose his job. Trust me I work in corporate America and saw someone first hand have a break down and they didn’t get fired or fined. They got a warning. I’m so sick of these blogs and people whinning about what she did. Suck it up and move on. If you don’t like her don’t watch. But, I’m sure more people will be watching her play than won’t. You go play a sport and see how it is in the heat of the moment. Most of you all commenting have never played a sport let alone PROFESSIONAL sport in their life. She is the best tennis player in the world. You see they had to cheat her out the tournament and now they want to ban her. What a bunch of bull. But, the masses are ignorant so I expect nothing less from you all. Good day.

Absurd behavior. Obviously she has got some serious issues. I wouldn’t let her play in this tournament next year. Part of being an adult is suffering the consequences of our actions.

Serena is a phoney. When she wins, she thanks her Lord God Jehovah. When she gets called for a foot fault, she tells the line judge that she wants to shove the ——- ball down her ——- throat. The only reason that she’s sorry is because it’s going to cost her out of her pocket. I won’t root for her.

The reality is everybody has acted prematurely at some point in their lives. People that are in sports, entertainment, etc. are just as human as everyone else. Therefore we should stop acting like they are prefect, they don’t get emotional, they don’t make mistakes, don’t get angry. Stop putting them on a pedestal for prefection
instead put on a pedestal for their talent. She has apologized, so accept it

By her apologizing just shows she is not just the best tennis player, but also a great person. The truth is they should have made everyone else befor do the same thing, but skin color plays alot, still in this world, people should see how racism still does exist. WHAT ABOUT THE LING JUDGE APOLOGIZE FOR CALLING OUT THE WRONG CALL NOW HA?

I HATE TO SEE HOW THE WORLD WORLD WORKS THAT WE LIVE IN! ALL THE OTHERS GOT AWAY WITH WHAT THE CURSES AND UGLY SHOWS THEY GAVE, BUT FOR HER ITS A BIG THING. EVERYONE IS HUMAN, AND MAKES MISTAKES IN LIFE! THE FACT IS HER AND HER SISTER RUN THAT TENNIS COURT NO MATTER WHAT, AND THE TRUTH IS THEY ARE HATED FOR THAT!MAKE EVERYONE APOLOGIZE, IDIOTS!

This was really excessive bad behavior, and one of the reasons I have totally turned against all forms of professional sports.
There is no sportsmanship. Just greed.

When you refer to yourself as having “great faith pride and integrity” your apology loses some of its meaning. I for one am tired of Serena and from now on will only read about the other Miss Williams.

Serena’s reaction was purely instinctive – I mean who wouldn’t get angry on such a crucial point in the match for a foot fault call that essentially resulted in a point for her opponent. Perhaps her reaction was too harsh, but she was under a lot of pressure and I’m sure she was not thinking properly over what she though was a crazy call. The line call was most likely wrong based on replays. I feel bad for the line caller as she probably did feel threatened, but Serena got way too harsh of a punishment for something that was purely instinctive. I suppose rules are rules, but that was the most important point of the match. It’s not entirely fair for the fans and even Clisjters that she had to win under those circumstances. I thought Serena showed class in the end by informing Clisjters she won and thought it was strange the umpire and the official didn’t inform her. I’m sure the crowd wanted an explanation. Perhaps there should be better protocal. I think Serena did her apologizing and people need to move on.
By the way Federer also cursed the empire at one point during his Final lost to Juan Martin Del Potro, but did he get a warning? I really want to know the answer to that one. Perhaps he didn’t have the same degree of a tirade as Serena, but a curse is a curse.

Though her initial reactions seemed more honest– that she is proud and full of intensity– but not really sorry, I still want to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe her later apology was sincere. I can imagine feeling just as fired up as she was on Championship Point against her. It seems she was off throughout the match and couldn’t steady herself. I believe she was going to keep digging in until she could compete, probably still feeling she could win. What a shock that she was disqualified!
Her behavior kind of matches her on court passions and the gritty way she competes. Though I don’t always enjoy her style, I do appreciate the champion she is.

I think serena williams is an amazing tennis player and the way she handled the situation was wrong. The way the officials handled the situation was good

Posted by: M-Fed | September 25, 2009, 8:40 am 8:40 am

I think she is a good person for apologizing it takes alot to admit you are wrong. I think people should take that into consideration. I think she should have been suspended or something not fines that outrageous amount of money.
