WATCH: Is Racism a Driving Factor in Obama’s Opposition?
Political discontent is part of the fabric of the country. But at town halls and public rallies, President Obama has been called much more than a liar. Is the President’s opposition driven in part by a refusal to accept a black president? Or are Obama backers playing the race card? Watch Dan Harris’ World News report below:

How about when Bush was called worse. Was that racist?

(sigh)
This is all so silly.
NoBo is considered by many to be more White than Black.
Consider his up-bringing.
When you weigh Nature and Nurture you get a White Guy.
How can Racism be an issue here?

I am so sick of Charlie Gibson, Brian Williams, and now President Carter calling ANYONE that opposes ANYTHING that President Obama does a racist. I opposed many things that George Bush did too, but no one called me a racist. What color am I? Does it matter? Simply because the current President is HALF black, has NOTHING to do with the fact that he is WHOLLY ULTRA LIBERAL. Perhaps all you folks in the media might want to look at his POLITICS as the reason for the protests. And since when is it RACIST to protest? Does the Democratic party think that they are the only ones that have the right to protest? I am NOT a Republican and I disapprove of the ideas that are being forced onto us by this administration. I protest things that I disagree with. This does NOT make me a racist. SHAME ON YOU CHARLIE, BRIAN, AND JIMMY CARTER for proliferating this nonsense. We won’t even discuss Chris Matthews. He’s prejudiced against anyone that doesn’t agree with him. Calling people that are trying to protect the USA and our rights are PATRIOTS not racists.

Utter nonsense!!! I am totally disgusted with this race card nonsense. People do not like Obama because of his policies, and radical czar appointments. For example, bankrupting the country, higher taxes, the Van Jones guy, ect.. Look ACORN was just exposed condoning tax evasion, and prostitution of under age illegal immigrants, and Obama is tied with ACORN. Obama has shown his true self……..a COMMUNIST.

Please correct me if I’m wrong.
Ex-President Carter stated that this opposition to the Health Reform Bill is based on disliking Pres. Obama because he is black???
Does Ex-Pres. Carter realize that the majority of the opposition is not against ALL of the health care reform – mostly just the Public Option part?
How in the world does Ex-Pres. Carter jump to the conclusion that this is ALL based on racism?
Wouldn’t the opposition dislike EVERYTHING Pres. Obama suggested if this was indeed based on race?
Or is this just some masterful plan to confuse people???
Remember, the majority of people (no matter who you are) want Health Reform.
We all want changes. It’s the Public Option part that people are questioning.
Maybe Ex-Pres. Carter can write another book on racism in America. This time he can leave Israel alone, and it can be based on the people who question the Public Option portion of the Health Care Reform bill. That book can also be on Osama bin Laden’s book of the month club.

Hey ABC News, since you brought up race, isn’t it odd that Obama missed a

with the recent Kanye West – Taylor Swift confrontation?
Maybe this time he’s too busy selling his Health Care Plan -
YesWeCan Care™.

Mr. Carter has simply demonstrated that he is a true “dyed in the wool” democrat, who will accuse anyone in the GOP, of anything, to further his support of the Democratic Party, which is rapidly becoming the Party of Bankruptcy, which Mr. Carter started, during his own very disastrous Presidency.
Mr. Wilson just might be the next President, as while he may have spoken at an improper moment, his words are believed by a great many people in this country, at the moment.
The CHIP program has demonstrated exactly what Mr. Wilson said, in the states with high illegal immigrant populations……they are the primary beneficiaries of that health care.
The Dems hate the truth, though. So, they simply deny the truth. Is that a lie????? In a manner of speaking, it is.

I read that Pres. Obama called Kanye a jacka–. (I don’t know if that really happened or not.)
If it is true, that pretty much said it all. I admire Obama for saying that.
It’s my understanding that Pres. Obama does not believe this to be about race.
Again, ‘good job’ to Pres. Obama.
Pres. Obama is insightful enough to realize that Ex.-Pres. Carter’s statements may only backfire.
Again, the majority of people are against the Public Option Portion of the Health Care Reform Bill. Rework the bill, and most of the opposition goes away. That’s it in a nutshell.
Ex-Pres. Carter needs to go farm peanuts again or write another Osama bin Laden’s bedtime story.

Yes racism is at the root of the problem. How else could it be that people suddenly are enamour with their insurance companies and want to vote against their own best interest. The Public Option is an option and people will pay for it, what is wrong with that? Keep you insurance until they throw you out.

IT WOULD TAKE A COMPLETE IDIOT NOT TO RECOGNIZE RACIAL HATRED WHEN IT MANIFESTS ITSELF. THEY HATED PRES.CARTER WHEN THEY FOUND OUT HE WASN’T THE USUAL SOUTHERN POLITICIAN, THEY HATED PRES. CLINTON WHEN THEY FOUND OUT HE SYMPATHIZED WITH THE AFRICAN AMERICAN POPULATION. NOW THEIR WORST FEARS AND HATREDS ARE KICKING THEM IN THE FACE, AND THEY WON’T ACCEPT IT. It would be unheard of for a young white man, barely elected (and never present) Junior Senator with limited workplace experience, NO administrative or business experience, and NO previous experience in public office whose last paid job was an adjunct professor, to get elected to President.
When Obama hit the scene with his debut on the Oprah Show, the black community rallied and turned out full force to vote for one of their own, as did the far left whites and non-black minorities who boldly declared that the reason they were voting for Obama was not because of the issues, but because they wanted to “be part of history.”

Freedom of speech, o.k., the right to protest o.k. but what is with neo nazi symbols? How do you go from health care to a hitler mustache? Then there was a fuss made about the President of the United States speaking to school children. We just spent eight years to as close to a dictatorship in America as ever seen before here. Bush & Cheney prevented protest, called anyone questioning the coward or unpatriotic hell even media was afraid to ask questions. Behind your boo’s are bigotry so stop painting over the truth.

I am so disappointed that ABC News has stooped so low to play the race card. I know I made the right decision to stop watching any of your news programs. John Stossel made the right decision to jump ship. He upholds his morals to a high standard and you certainly do not have it any more. Charlie you ought to be ashamed of yourself for being so ignorant about the ACORN tapes. Where is ABC News and their investigative reporting?

Charlie Gibson and ABC news are completely
off track with the racist comment. It’s socialism
that the American people are against. Sounds like
Charlie is out of touch with the American people
just as he is out of touch with his ignorance about

President Carter isn’t thinking. For him to utter a word about we Americans in this day and age to be racist is too stupid for words. I agree there may be some but it’s so ridiculous to even think of Obama as Black, he’s half white. It is his Socialistic policies that are causing this problem. The bailouts and our Billions being gifted to the CEO’s of bailout companies as bonuses. Who is running this poor country into the ground? Guess who… and it’s not because he is black that we are upset!!!
Posted by: Sharon | September 16, 2009, 2:58 pm 2:58 pm
I think race is playing a big part in the opposition. I am white, by the way. The conservatives have gotten the racists on their band wagon. It has been done before in politics in order to gain their objectives. To me the proof that racism is a big part of the opposition is the fact that death threats against the President have increased. The health care reform will not pass due to all the distortions and lies and the fact that the rich and powerful Republican conservatives will fight it with everything they have. Some of the Demorcrats are against health reform as well. I am sick and tired of President Obama being blamed for all the problems he inherited from the previous administration. He has been President about 9 months. What do you think was going on during the previous 8 years when we had a Republican administration. I am tires of my intelligence being insulted. I think for myself and don’t believe lies by those who have their own hidden agendas. Politics has gotten too vicious and ugly and because of that this country will continue to suffer but it is not the fault of our current President.

I agree with what most have to say on these posts, race is a cop-out, when the foot hurts we find something to lean on. Race is their crutch, they have no other palce for support. An old commercial about a Tuna Company was always turning down Charlie the Tuna, likewise I feel most people have had enough of Charlie Gibson. He turned me off when he lofted himself high above Sarah Palin, but, stuck his foot in him mouth up to his knee in a big way. If you want good reporting, honest and straight forwad without being afraid of brushing Obama’s feelings, watch Fox, they have it right. Yes Chris Matthews is one smart cookie, MSNBC along with him, Olbermann and their off the wall crew is gone, look at the ratings. I for one along with many friends I know never watch them anymore. Health care is a joke, the Czars and Obama fixing himself to the big Unions is the factor. I feel if things are not fixed, many true Americans will refuse to pay their taxes, then what will happen? DC will have to shut down. I refuse to pay for Abortions. Wake up leaders, or we’ll do it for you!

The TV media is so desparate for news that it has to resort to find something “racist” with Obama bashing.
Look what Pres. Bush had to take from the TV giants–ABC,NBC & CBS. not mentioning the Democrats. I guess Sarah Palin would be considered “white trash” then by these TV networks. Come on, people, wake up. David Letterman cannot seem to stop mentioning and making fun of Bush and Palin. Obama has made quite a bit of mistakes; he’s no genius either but Letterman doesn’t harp on Obama. Get a life, ABC,NBC & CBS.

It is a real mystery how so many white so called Christians can harbor so much hatred againest minorities and illegal aliens. They are worried that the elderly will be left out of health care and told to get out of the way and die, but doesn’t it bother you to deny health care to innocent children who can’t help it if they are poor or if their parents are here illegally. Is it o.k. to let them die. I am a Christian too and that is not in my beliefs. Have some comassasion for those less fortunate and for the innocent and blameless. Hatred is what is destroying us not minorities and illegal aliens.

You see faces but no heart. Look the eyes of the Republicans and their behavior and you see a total contempt to our president. Six months looking and studying these people and is really horrifying what they say in their daily comment. They are creating a world of doubt around our president. If you look at the reaction from the white people today we observe their doubt about if the President knows what he is doing. This is reached because the FBI technique used by the Republicans. 250 years of government cannot be forgotten in 6 months.

I am really getting sick and tired of everyone playing the race card everytime President Obama doesn’t get his way. Ever stop and think that maybe is sits in the same class as Gore, Kerry, Clinton (both of them), and the Kennedy’s. The FACT is that President Obama is a left wing liberal socialist who is trying to destroy the life that we have had over the past 300 years.
Oh, are all the African-Americans who are starting to speak out against him racist also. If you haven’t seen them, maybe you should watch Fox for a while to get a different perspective from ABC, NBC, CBS, and CNN.
IT IS NOT ABOUT RACE, IT IS ABOUT POLITICS. I think people should realize that and stop whining by little kids.
Maybe, just maybe, people are realizing that President Obama is not everything he claimed to be when he ran for president. And maybe the ‘average Joe’ is a lot smarter that the Dems want to admit.

I have an idea.
How about the media starts calling Obama a Dark Skinned White Guy™.

After a month or so we won’t view NoBo as a Black Man anymore.
Then we can get beyond this race distraction and hammer the the Pres just on his policies alone.

What the right wing is doing is nothing short of hate crimes.
They have twisted the fundamentals of the American dream so that:
“War is peace.”
“Freedom is slavery.”
“Ignorance is strength.”
(George Orwell, 1984)
These right wing extremists are pushing the first amendment to its breaking point. Such slander and libel would not be tolerated in other first-world, developed countries. Enough is enough. Rupert Murdoch should be held accountable for his spawning of such hateful messages.

I think the media has been so mesmerized by President Obama that any viewpoint that doesn’t match up with his liberal agenda is racist. Sorry, but just disagreeing with his agenda is not racist. I would also like to remind the media that the President is as Caucasian as he is
African. So is it racist to disagree with a white guy’s agenda?

Pres. Obama stated that he did not believe that this was all about race.
The majority of people focus on health reform and what is the best way to go about it.
There are foolish people in both parties. We can continue to call each other names, or we can get on with the debate and produce a real health reform bill.
I bet bin Laden and his associates are really laughing at America and how foolish we ALL look at one time or another.

Pride should come from what you and not the color of your skin. Race should not be a factor at all. Looking back in history I see that most of the misery and evil that has happened and been perpetrated upon innocent people in this world was brought about by white people. Those who insist on using BOGUS accusations of racism toward anyone and everyone who disagrees with Obama’s policies and/or political views are doing Obama and the democratic party more harm than good. These accusations say more about the ignorance and small mindedness of the accusers than it does about the Americans they are accusing! “Ninety percent who challenge Pres. Obama are ‘reactionary racists’?…..
it’s ‘treason’. –by Jerry F.
Do you really think that?
What would Pres. Obama think of your words?
Republicans are FOR HEALTH REFORM.
Republicans want to understand how the public option will be paid and how it will affect private insurance and their medical care. Is that really treason if people ask HOW it will work? We need accountants to really explain this to everybody.
If Pres. Obama wanted to, the Public Option could be passed today. He’s got the numbers. Why won’t he pass it?
I don’t know the answers, but I find it very curious.
So, if you want to be angry, why not focus on Pres. Obama and why he refuses to push this through?
I actually admire Pres. Obama for not just pushing this through, but trying to work this out. I suggest that everyone takes a cue from Pres. Obama.

The real Wilson-
hard-line conservative views. But he has been confrontational in the past.
In 2003, Wilson called it “unseemly” and a “smear” for the mixed-race daughter of Sen. Strom Thurmond, Essie Mae Washington-Williams, to identify the longtime South Carolina senator as her father after his death.
After a public outcry, he reversed course and said he had the utmost respect for Washington-Williams.
As a state senator, he was an outspoken opponent of efforts to remove the Confederate flag from atop the South Carolina Statehouse.
How can he say he’s not..kiss your seat goodbye!!!

THANK YOU President Carter-
The media has been dancing around the racism – afraid to admit RACE is THE reason for the unheaval- town hall meetings, Michelle’s arms, you name the topic _ iT IS RACISM AT THE FOUNDATION. It takes an 80+ white man who is not interested in running for anything or gaining credit to buy a house to call it exactly what it is.
American WHITES are as racist today as they were during slavery and Everything said is because of it. I don’t care if President Obama discovered a cure for cancer- White people would reject the cure because an African American discovered it.
MEDIA – why haven’t you broached this idea? Are you and others BLIND?

As some one of mixed race (no not black much worse to most Americans Red) I’ve seen enough of the prejudice spread around and only half hidden!
Whether you want to admit it or not the majority of the White American public is predominantly racially orientated. And highly discriminatorial!
I find it highly commendable that President Jimmy Carter came out and stated the fact the way that he did! Bravo to an Honest American!

Looks like MSNBC and the other propagandist media is quickly running from Carter and the race card players. Why the sudden change? It is obvious to anyone who has a little common sense and who is honest with themselves. It’s because the media’s leader in the White House said he didn’t think race was a factor. You biased media guys are SOOOOO obvious!!!

Not really. While there will always be racists on both sides of the color line, most of Obama’s opposition has nothing whatsoever to do with his skin color, but rather with his policies and plans.
Jimmy Carter’s outlandish claim that Mr. Wilson was responding in a racist manner, was the worst kind of political party garbage, and is certainly most unbecoming an ex-president, even if he was one of the worst president’s in modern history.

In the land of the blind the one-eyed man is king. That is why the ultra conservatives have gotten the racists, radicals, red necks, and reactionaries on board against President Obama. They have nothing but contempt for them too, but they know how useful it is to get them stirred up in order to gain their objectives. Plus it is such an easy thing to do to get them riled up and suspicous, because they never seem to realize that they are being used and the joke’s on them. I do not believe that the majority of politicians who are against health care reform are concerned with what is best for America and its peoplem other then the rich. Unlike many others I do not believe they will vote for health care reform even if the government option is dropped. I do not believe that there will be any health care reform at all until insurance companies start dropping people’s coverage in large numbers and the premiums and deductibles/copays skyrocket. It’s coming, folks.
