Closing Arguments: Is Obama Worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize?
In winning the Nobel Peace Prize today, President Obama has joined the distinguished company of other American presidents; heads of state; civil rights icons; human-rights champions; and spiritual leaders. But as so many critics are quick to point out, his actual accomplishments pale in comparison to many others. The award is based on expectations of his work to come — what he described as a "call to action." So tonight, we want your take: Does President Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? Tell us what you think. You can follow "Nightline" anytime on Twitter: http://twitter.com/Nightline.

No he doesn’t deserve the award. Other than being in office for 9 months, spending money we don’t have and sending more troops to Afghanistan he hasn’t done anything. He deserves the I haven’t done anything award.

Of course he deserves it. He has given new hope to people around the world that the U.S. has come to its senses, and has finally resumed championing democracy and good sense throughout the world. It’s about time!!! I am not ashamed to be an American anymore.

No..he does not deserve it! He deserves maybe an award for speaches…but not for the Noble Peace prize! He hasnt done anything to be awarded this!

Not only is it premature to award Obama the prize, it is indefensible. He came to office promising peace and now claims he needs more troops in Afghanistan. That’s peace?
My fear is that this guy will be another JFK — a charismatic politician immortalized without the record to justify it.
The Norwegians have grossly cheapened their prize by spurning so many who ARE deserving!

The Nobel committee claims to have awarded President Obama with this award in hopes that his word “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.” What they have done instead is bring shame and stigma to an award that once stood for action and not just call.

Someday he may be very deserving of this award. But I think that for now this is extremely premature. Even he knows that it was given on the idea of hope…not accomplishment.

Of course he does..He has restored hope to the rest of the world that The US is not what it used to be..He certainly shouldn’t be blamed or attacked for winning an award.!!!

It’s simply amazing all the negative hoopla about President Obama receiving the Nobel Peace Prize. He didn’t nominate, nor award, himself….he was CHOSEN. It’s very obvious that MR. Terry Moran is a complete cynic regarding the choice of President Obama. I find myself having a severe distaste for him and his “tilted” brand of journalism.

A peace prize for someone who advocates violence in the womb to the most vulnerable and innocent. What a mockery.

Base on ma own idea, i have to say yes mr. Obama deserves the nobel peace prize, although am lacking proofs to support my idea! But i’ve heard lots of things about the man which made me believes that he deserves it.

No, he doesn’t deserve the award, and in an ideal world, he would decline graciously citing others who have actually accomplished something. In his case it’s only an expectation, not any actual deeds. I’m tired of hearing of his ‘walking on water’. Let’s see some actual completed projects.
Posted by: jjay | October 10, 2009, 12:10 am 12:10 am

I do think the President deserves the prize. Just look at the difference in public opinion abroad about the U S since he has been President. His message is one of friendship, cooperation and mutual respect. Not heard from us in a long time.

Of course he deserves the prize, but mostly I hope he uses the opportunity to keep other promises–like actually closing Guantanamo and bringing the troops back from Iraq and Afghanistan. He has already started the processes toward nuclear disarmament and the furthering of diplomacy in promoting peace. And of course the world is very happy that Bush is gone and perhaps the Norway committee wanted to promote that change as well.

No. The Pres just blew off the Dalai Lama – a man who epitomizes peace – to appease the Chinese government, who make torture of innocent Tibetans a regular practice. He says lots of pretty words, but what has he actually done to deserve this?
Posted by: Maria | October 10, 2009, 12:11 am 12:11 am
he most certainly does deserve this presigious award after all he has been busy fixing the screw ups that bush 2 has made through his 8 years of so called leadership he has shown glimpses of peace in the regions people never thought the americans would ever leave from.
Posted by: jeremy houser | October 10, 2009, 12:11 am 12:11 am
Obama has done more in the past 9 months in promoting diplomacy and recognizing the importance of inviting others to the table to discuss and solve war, peace, world economic stress and human rights. He has demonstrated that open and committed communication is essential to changing the unjust systems and situations.
Posted by: Barbara Gross | October 10, 2009, 12:11 am 12:11 am

Posted by: Carl Smith | October 10, 2009, 12:12 am 12:12 am

Posted by: Martin McHenry | October 10, 2009, 12:12 am 12:12 am
I believe others are much more deserving of this award. He was nominated about 12 days after taking the oath of the Office of the President of the United States. I understood this award is suppose to go to individuals who actually accomplished something. What accomplishment did he do to earn this award? NOTHING! I believe this award has lost any useful meaning. Thank you so much for political correctness.
Posted by: gehoots | October 10, 2009, 12:12 am 12:12 am
Obama was in office for 11 days before the deadline for 2009 nominations. And during those 11 days, he accomplished what? The Nobel prize has deteriorated into a political ploy to advance a European agenda. It’s certainly not about merit.
Posted by: Janne Green | October 10, 2009, 12:13 am 12:13 am
Obama does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. Alfred Nobel’s will states the award goes to “the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” How has he done any of that? He has given people empty hope. He gas not practiced what he constantly preaches. Dr. King died for his beliefs and stood with the people, not just for the people. Obama should do the same before he accepts the award.
Posted by: Matthew | October 10, 2009, 12:13 am 12:13 am
What a joke! The Nobel Peace Prize has become a farce.
Obama has done nothing more than pander to the crowds in Europe.

No, he does not deserve it. The award should be for actions taken not based upon speeches (written by someone else) and expectations. I do not reward my children for saying they will study hard and make good grades, I reward them when they follow through and achieve their goals.

Hey, they were just glad he hadn’t declared an unprovoked war against someone in the world. I think they gave this award to America for repudiating the warmongering, ally alienating, treaty breaking, torture advocating, lying right wing thugs that made even Americans afraid for our country as they took our rights away with the “Patriot Act” that is anything but.

NO HE DOESN’T DESERVE IT….HE HAS PUT THIS COUNTRY IN A DEEPER RECESSION IN HIS 9 MONTHS OF SERVICE THAN ANY PRESIDENT HAS DONE IN 2- 4 YR TERMS….AND NO BETTER WORDS COULD BE SAID THAN THE FOLLOWING…This letter you are about to read was written by a 4th grade teacher this past week. She even gave the world her telephone and fax numbers. We are in dire need of more true American citizens who are proud of OUR United States of America . WAKE UP AMERICA . . . please . . . before it is too late!
April 27, 2009
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington , DC 20500
Mr. Obama:
I have had it with you and your administration, sir. Your conduct on your recent trip overseas has convinced me that you are not an adequate representative of the United States of America collectively or of me personally.
You are so obsessed with appeasing the Europeans and the Muslim world that you have abdicated the responsibilities of the President of the United States of America . You are responsible to the citizens of the United States .
You are not responsible to the peoples of any other country on earth. I personally resent that you go around the world apologizing for the United States telling Europeans that we are arrogant and do not care about their status in the world. Sir, what do you think the First World War and the Second World War were all about if not the consideration of the peoples of Europe ? Are you brain dead? What do you think the Marshall Plan was all about?
Do you not understand or know the history of the 20th century? Where do you get off telling a Muslim country that the United States does not consider itself a Christian country? Have you not read the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution of the United States ? This country was founded on Judeo-Christian ethics and the principles governing this country, at least until you came along, come directly from this heritage. Do you not understand this?
Your bowing to the king of Saudi Arabia is an affront to all Americans. Our President does not bow down to anyone, let alone the king of Saudi Arabia . You don’t show Great Britain , our best and one of our oldest allies, the respect they deserve yet you bow down to the king of Saudi Arabia . How dare you, sir! How dare you!
You can’t find the time to visit the graves of our greatest generation because you don’t want to offend the Germans but make time to visit a mosque in Turkey . You offended our dead and every veteran when you give the Germans more respect than the people who saved the German people from themselves. What’s the matter with you?
I am convinced that you and the members of your administration have the historical and intellectual depth of a mud puddle and should be ashamed of yourselves, all of you. You are so self-righteously offended by the big bankers and the American automobile manufacturers yet do nothing about the real thieves in this situation, Mr. Dodd, Mr. Frank, Franklin Raines, Jamie Gorelic, the Fannie Mae bonuses, and the Freddie Mac bonuses. What do you intend to do about them? Anything? I seriously doubt it.
What about the U.S. House members passing out $9.1 million in bonuses to their staff members — on top of the $2..5 million in automatic pay raises that lawmakers gave themselves? I understand the average House aide got a 17% bonus. I took a 5% cut in my pay to save jobs with my employer.
You haven’t said anything about that.. Who authorized that? I surely didn’t! Executives at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will be receiving $210 million in bonuses over an eighteen-month period, that’s $45 million more than the AIG bonuses. In fact, Fannie and Freddie executives have already been awarded $51 million; not a bad take. Who authorized that and why haven’t you expressed your outrage at this group who are largely responsible for the economic mess we have right now.
I resent that you take me and my fellow citizens as brain-dead and not caring about what you idiots do. We are watching what you are doing and we are getting increasingly fed up with all of you. I also want you to know that I personally find just about everything you do and say to be offensive to every one of my sensibilities. I promise you that I will work tirelessly to see that you do not get a chance to spend two terms destroying my beautiful country.
Sincerely,
Every Real American
P.S. I rarely ask that emails be ‘passed around’…………..PLEASE SEND THIS TO YOUR EMAIL LIST…….it’s past time for all Americans to wake up!

No Obama does not deserve this award. What has he done? Nothing..but be a smooth talker..This award brings shame and delutes all past winners accomplishments. For the argument he received this award in anticipation of his doing good…what a crock..so if he doesn’t will it be stripped from him? Not likely. Shameful.

Uh, did you forget that SENDING more troops to Afghanistan (“the more threatening area, where Ossama is hiding”) was the reason for pulling troops OUT of Iraq? Now, he’s waffling on that, as the death toll rises. No, he doesn’t deserve an award nine months into a position for which he’s done nothing but stir controversy. “Yes, we can!” Can what? We forgot to get him to tell us that….

YES! do you know anyone else in recent memory that has even slightly tried to augment peace in our world? Pres Clinton tried to broker peace in the middle east to no avail – as most presidents in the last 40 years. Give Pres. Obama a chance.
Posted by: shauna | October 10, 2009, 12:14 am 12:14 am
Assuredly not. First per his Berlin speech he claims to be a citizen of the world, hardly what you would expect from the leader of the USA. Second, if the prize is for causing peace somewhere on the globe, where has he done that? The Nobel committee should have a prize for best teleprompter reader, that one he deserves.

With less than one year in office I think it is VERY premature. It’s like Walmart giving Employee Of The Decade to a guy who’s only been stocking shelves for a couple of weeks. I’m not impressed. Talk to me in a couple of years when we’ve had a chance to see his body of work. Getting such a prestigious award for what he “MIGHT” do is just ridiculous and irresponsible…
Posted by: Dawn | October 10, 2009, 12:15 am 12:15 am
No – as Saturday night live skit portrayed – Jack and squat, nada, nothing. The nominating for BO had to take place just 10 days into his presidency. They did this to slight President Bush. The only thing he has done with Congress is to spend us into the poor house and a deep ditch we will never get out of. That’s Peace alright.
Posted by: Jerry | October 10, 2009, 12:15 am 12:15 am
Of course he deserves it. Internationally he is respected and viewed as a strong leader. He has returned credibility to our country. America is ready to lead again, as he said in his inaugural address and lead he has! Unfortunately, here in the US, the right is upset and tries to destroy him and his every move. but internationally, where they are only concerned about honoring a strong leader who is motivated to bring peace to the world, it is evident that his strong leadership toward nuclear disarmament and fighting terrorism together, his vision and leadership are appreciated.

What has Mr. Obama actually “done” to deserve this award. I don’t think I alone in my assumption that whomever is awarded the Nobel has to actually “do” something. With his acceptance of the award he has single handedly given the Nobel Peace Prize an intrinsic value of zero!

No. What thing has he done (substantive) to deserve this?
Posted by: James Ramsay | October 10, 2009, 12:15 am 12:15 am
No, I do not agree that he deserved it. Anyone without any former record of experience —let alone someone who had been in office for a mere 10 days— should not have been considered at all. It would have been appropriate to have waited to see what HISTORY suggests after his term to be taken more seriously. I think it cheapens the honor to give it to anyone based on what “they might plan to do.” They made a big mistake and have undermined their own wisdom and value. Sad thing. I was especially touched when it was given the same value at Beau’s birthday and a day off at school on Monday. That wasn’t appropriate to share in the same moment with receiving that honor.

Posted by: Jo | October 10, 2009, 12:15 am 12:15 am
Yes he does deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. May I remind everyone that the man is fighting an uphill battle, one with the GOP party of no, who is determined to bring him down, and two with our alli nations who want to string us out there and offer little help, with the global crisis and the war. Obama cannot do these things alone. The Republicans decided that they would say NO to everything he’s trying to accomplish as well as spread hatred and lies about the man. I still here people talking about Obama’s birth certificate for christ sake. The man’s mother was from Kansas. She could have dropped that baby off in the Pacific Ocean and he would still be an American !
He’s trying to accomplish great things, but he cannot do these things by himself.

To defeat the taliban or assist Iraq in rebuilding it war shattered nation, there is a need for consensus otherwise these war will never end…to obtain peace we need consensus first my friends…

No, he doesn’t deserve it. If you think he does, you are blinded by his smooth talking and lack of delivered promises. You wouldn’t know real truth if it hit you in the face. If you were ashamed to be an American in the first place then you should have left the country long ago. Too many soldiers have DIED so you and your family can live in a free nation. Think twice before you cast your careless words.
People that deserve this award have done 100 times more than he has. The only peace he’s stirring is in his Muslim community and those who reside in his hidden agenda.

The nominations were completed two weeks into his presidency and what had he accomplished then?? as far as that goes what has he accomplished to date other then quadrupling the deficit, rising unemployment and nationalizing the auto industry. I am afraid of the whole Hope and Change thing.

Yes, What an honor that The Nobel Committee would look at our President as an example of the hopes and aspirations of not just US citizens, but people of the world. It was specified why he was honored. He does not have to prove anything to anyone.
Posted by: Carolyn | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
No, I believe this is such a prestigious award and by someone receiving it that has not accomplished anything toward peace, it makes the Nobel Peace Prize a much less important award than in the past.
Posted by: Marlene | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
YES, YES, YES, a thousand times yes, President Obama deserved the nobel peace prize because that is what he all aobut, Peace for the entire nation and who in their right mind would not want peace no matter what color you are. It is spoken. It is done, now all you haters get over it because the decision will not change.
Posted by: Miriam | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
No he doesn’t. Ronald Reagan helped end the cold war, and Obama is NOTHING next to him. If you don’t like Bush, get over it. Face reality. Obama is nothing yet, just a guy who was elected.
Posted by: Neil Pomeroy | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
I have nothing against Obama, but no he shouldn’t have gotten this award. It saddens me that now the Nobel Peace Prize is also compromised by new and popular then actual earning it. They based his winning on “expectations” and not actual works. I can expect these same things and not win the award. All politicians promise and want things but very few follow through. It should be waiting until he follows through. I mean how long did Jimmy Carter have to wait to get one with all the good works he has done? What was it like 20 years???? And Obama hasn’t even done anything yet!!
Posted by: Jeanne | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
You have to accomplish something to get this prize. Barack Obama has not done anything for anybody any where. He did nothing for Chicago. He did nothing for Illinois. He has done nothing for the United States of America. And he has done nothing for the world. He just keeps getting adulation for doing nothing. Amazing how stupid those folks are for giving him all this credit for nothing. Utterly amazing and dumbfounding.
Posted by: Maureen | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
Even Obama said it wasn’t deserved. So, I don’t think people are bad mouthing him for getting it. They are questioning the reasoning.
Obama hasn’t stopped any wars, as a matter of fact he is adding more troops to Afghanistan.
He has not found any cures for disease.
Nor anything such as what Mandela endured. So, that’s the reason for the negativity.
Posted by: WF M | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
NO, NO, NO, NO. HE HAS NOT DONE ANYTHING FOR OUR COUNTRY. ALL HE WAN’TS IS ATTENTION. THAT’S IT. GET HIM OUT OF HERE. HE IS DOING SEVERE DAMAGE TO OUR SECURITY AND OUR COUNTRY, PLEASE PLEASE GET HIM OUT OF HERE. HE IS NOT TO BE TRUSTED.

NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by: alicia | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
Obama has not done ANYTHING to deserve such an award!!!! I have much less respect for him and for the award now. He has and continues to be ashamed of this great country. He apologizes continuously for our country, our accomplishments, and our past. HE is an embarassment. Obviously, the Nobel Peace Prize now comes direct from the Cracker Jack box.
Posted by: pat | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
Giving Obama the peace prize is a joke, the value of this award is now meaningless. If Obama was a man who would live up to his word that he really didn’t deserve the award he would decline it but alas, he’s too greedy and self-serving to refuse it. The award for hope?! What a laugh, but yet, Obama has the gaul to spin it as if he deserves it. All those who believe this was appropriate keep on drinking your the Kook Aid from Obama.
Posted by: DJG | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
It is insulting and degrading to the many individuals who have spent their lives in the actual pursuit and accomplishment of peace. The award has been cheap and political for years. The deadline for nominations was about 11 days after Obama’s inaguration! He should have turned it down. It’s embarrassing.
Posted by: Leo | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
Definitely not. He has to do something Great to win this type of award.
Posted by: Jack | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
I don’t believe he deserves the award; he’s not done anything to justify it. What a slap in the face of those past winners who have deserved the award, not to mention those, like Ghandi, who have done so much and still not won the prize.

Not just YES…. but Hell yes!!!
Posted by: ellen maidman | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
President Obama has made a grave error by accepting this award. The expectations created by receiving such an award could encumber his ability to act militarily during a time when the war in Afghanistan is become more difficult. As to being deserving: Did Obama broker peace between the Palestinians and Israel? No! All he has done is the cash for clunkers program. Every politician has nice ideas and they are meaningless until actual results have been produced. This was a bad decision on both ends.

This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard! NO!! He does not deserve it.
Posted by: Liz | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
It is within their rights to give an award to whom the chose… but Mr. Obama hasn’t done anything to deserve it. This is a political statement, not a real reflection of the esteem due the man.
I hope he earns it.
Posted by: Teresa Bass | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
NO!!! Awards are given out for achievement, not intent. The audacity for Obama to think he deserves such an award is like that of an a athlete who demands an Olympic gold medal before even proving himself to play in the Games.
Give the award posthumously to President Ronald Reagan. There’s someone who deserved it if anyone did.
Posted by: Craig Lovett | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
No! Obama in no way deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. He has done nothing for peace, and he wishes to bring down the most successful nation in human history. He hates the United States and the Constitution of the United States and he and his wife surround themselves with Marxists and radicals full of hatred, lies and the desire to abort more and more of the unborn. What he deserves is to be ousted along with his Ayers/Pivon/Alinsky spawn.
Posted by: Steve Noack | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
Why not give the Pres the Nobel prize for Economics, Physics, and Chemistry as well? Maybe he’ll come up with something wonderful in those areas too.
The Nobel committee truly shows themselves to be a bunch of buffoons.
By the way, the cost of flying Air Force One to Oslo to collect the award will be greater than the award itself. The prize should be donated back to the government, not to charity.
Posted by: John Henderson | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
This is a classic example of the carrot and the stick. Those who don’t like America have figured out that they have an unwittingly willing participant in the European dislike of America in Barack Obama. They have dangled the Nobel Peace Prize in front of his face with the realization that he will follow them wherever they lead him now. He should have declined it and told them that he is his own man and that he will not be swayed by European opinion. But looking at Obama’s history, he has never been his own man. The question is, who’s man is he?
Posted by: Ira | October 10, 2009, 12:17 am 12:17 am
I don’t understand why people want to give him a Nobel Peace Prize. It is like you finally get an award for being President. He has done absolutely nothing for the American People or anybody for that matter. He must have some influential friends.
Posted by: Andy Mills | October 10, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am
Abolutely not. As a senior citizen, I don’t deserve the treatment that I have received from my government and will not receive for the next two years in the form of no COLA in SS benefits. We worked hard all our lives and he hasn’t done anything but “talk” and he has a lot of very smart writers telling him what to say and he can’t do that well without the teleprompters.
Posted by: J. Park | October 10, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am
Absolutely not. Obama has done nothing deserving of this prize. But I guess that follows a trend that has been going on in recent years, because Gore and Carter didn’t do anything to deserve it either. The Nobel Prize has become meaningless…the people deserving of it get overlooked, and it is awarded ti someone whose only accomplishment is that he can read a teleprompter. Congratulations, Mr. Obama, you are extraordinary. What a joke!
Posted by: Donna | October 10, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am
Yes, he do. He a good presedent, and we likes him. He already help many people get benefits they need, and he gonna give more help. Rich people hates him, but god and barack love the poor people best.

Posted by: tom | October 10, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am
It is like giving the award to N. Chamberlain after he signed the Munich Pact. It is given based on hope without historical evidence of value. It devalues the Noble award.
Posted by: David | October 10, 2009, 12:18 am 12:18 am
I am proposing a new award; the NoBull Prize, which can only be given to someone who has accomplished something!
To give a major award because of an “expectation” is utterly ridiculous and I agree, it cheapens the award. I don’t believe Obama will ever deserve the original intent of the Nobel Prize, but even if he surprises me, having received it already makes a mockery of it.

I didn’t realize that the Nobel Peace Prize was for sale, it appears that the same Muslims who got BHO elected also own and control the banks and the debts in Norway. What a shame, shame on the Saudi King who was bowed down to, shame on the Norwegians for desecrating the memory of Mr. Nobel, and shame on BHO for making promises that he either cannot or doesn’t intend to keep strictly for political expediency. Do you think we are all mindless idiots? This is just another attempt by the left wing liberals in Europe to promote their socialistic, anti-nationalist agenda. Obama has already admitted that he will not be able to do much of what he promised before the election. He is all talk and no action.

No Way…cash for clunkers is all I have seen from him & that was for a VERY small amount of the population. Have not seen any of his so called promises amount to anything. He got it because and ONLY because, he is the first black President of the United States. Now that he has it…let’s see him come through on his so called plans for the people….prove yourself worthy of this honor!!!!

Posted by: LP | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
To some extent, whether he deserves the prize depends on what he does with it. Imagine if he were to use the prize money to gather a council of advisors consisting of all the living Peace Prize winners; asked them what they would do in his position in world affairs; and actually used the advice to further peace in a difficult world. One can dream, no?
Posted by: Daniel Stock | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
No way in he__, he has done nothing but go back on his promises, spend money that does not exist, and destroy Social Security. For this he gets a Nobel Peace Prize when there is a world of more deserving people out there. The comment on his speeches then why not award the Prize to his speech writers not the person who just reads prepared speeches.
Loved the response when his Black friend was arrested and he immediately showed his true colors by calling out the race card?????
Would not be my choice for a Nobel Peace Prize.
Posted by: Bill | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
Hardly deserves it…So far he or his administration has done nothing except mire America in debt and spread extreme distrust of government at all levels. The award has been grossly degradated
during the last decade.
Posted by: Jack Estes | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
No in no way does he, Obama has not effectively in any way held up his promises that were made during his campaigning. What’s so funny about all this is he was nominated only a mere 11 days after being inagurated hardly enough time to show any progress or promise of any movement he sai would happen. Last time I checked things happened by action not by mere speeches or promises.
Posted by: Mason | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
At one time, the Noble Peace Prize was considered as the supreme award for extraordinary accomplishment. By awarding a president that had only been in office for 10 days before nominations were closed, the nominating committe has now made a mockery of this once prestigious award. Does he deserve this award? NO!
Posted by: vcv | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
While he is in proper company with Carter, Arafat, and Gore, he is not worthy of any prize but a ticket back to wherever he came from and out of the Whitehouse! He’s as big a joke as the “prize” itself! You do realize that Nobel was the inventor of dynamite, don’t you? The stupid “prize” was originally meant to be awarded only to those who would call for the elimination of standing armies! I would be more proud to win honorable mention in a science fair than to win that worthless junk! America is under attack by elites, politicians, and the nonsense news media! The true American Patriots are the common men and women who keep Her running in spite of all the crap you do! We will defeat you, one way or the other, and you will pay for what you have done! The daughters and sons of Liberty will not stand by as you tread on the Constitution and make a mockery of our great nation! Beware!

Wow, now they are giving out Nobel Prizes for promises. He deserves nothing, in my opinion. He has spent us into oblivion, has apologized for my country being arrogant, bows to terrorist leaders and is leading this country to ruin. What he does deserve is to be taken out of office. He should follow through on his promise to our troops. He drags his feet as our soldiers get killed.

Posted by: macdaddy | October 10, 2009, 12:20 am 12:20 am
No, not yet. He needs to first get his historical facts in order & correct concerning other countries & faiths. He was way off the mark when speaking about past circumstances concerning Israel & Palistine. There are policies being proposed for America that won’t bring adverse groups together but further apart. The Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded for more than just the proposal spoken of concerning nuclear disarmament. Maybe President Obama will be deserving some time in the future but not at this moment.

Sorry! The Nobel Peace Prize didn’t do its homework. He is very charismatic as well as personable and has been visiting lots of countries spending our money travelling in the short time he has been in office. He said he WOULD to do lots of things. He has spent tons on bailouts and clunkers for which our children will pay for years. Let’s what he can do and give him the prize when he shows us what he HAS done.

I don’t hear anyone reporting that the votes were back in February. When President Obama was in office for … a week and a half. So, certainly not. The Nobel people are obviously doing it for reasons other than those normally applicable to Nobel candidates.

It doesn’t matter what you or I think, It only matters to those who nominated and selected him. The critics cease to amaze me, we have a President who is trying his very best to ensure equality for all people and he is critized. Our former President and staff are responsile for the mess that this country is in. During his eight years it got worse and worse and he received no where near the criticism this President has received.
Posted by: Melissa | October 10, 2009, 12:21 am 12:21 am
Besides the obvious fact that the president has no accomplishments to warrant this award, every single person has missed the glaring problem here.
The prize given out for 2009, is for the full year of 2008!
The nominations began last year, with the final nominations submitted by January 31st, 2009 (11 days after he took office).
The President was a Senator at the time!
Posted by: Phillip K | October 10, 2009, 12:21 am 12:21 am
He certainly didn’t deserve to be nominated less than 2 weeks into his presidency, and he certainly doesn’t deserve it after only 9 mo. He has done nothing but triple our former record deficit, break the travel records of every other president, embarass America overseas, demoralize our troops and abuse the priviledges of the office of president. Quiet a lot of negatives for such a short term. I am embarassed for him!

Thanks to the misguided leadership of the past eight years, the whole world and half of the United States, hated what America had turned into. YES, President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for the very fact that he sees the goodness in everyone – even those who stop at nothing to discredit him. And, YES, he deserves the award now, when the world is hoping for peace. Bravo! Mr. President! Carry on the good work.

Absolutely he deserves it. The worlds outlook on hope changed as soon as he was elected. Without the hope that things can be made better no one will work to change anything. Because of Obama many arounf the world now will again work for change. We will never fully know the extesnt of the good that will eventually become because he was elected.

No! One must have contributed to the betterment of the world! Not just rhetoric! Look at the many who have made a difference in this world and have not received the award. The award process has been tarnished and devalued because of the political views of those who control the process. What a shameful way to ruin a wonderful award!

one comment was all the president could do is read speaches. name one president that remembered a speech in its entirety– and oh, we won’t talk about people who cannot read which has nothing to do with the brilliant mind of our president. It is all about people who know how to read and back up what is being read so that people of all intellects, can understand what is being said.
Posted by: Miriam | October 10, 2009, 12:22 am 12:22 am
Consider the facts. The nominations closed 10 days after he took office, what exactly did he do in 10 days that justifies a nomination. What he might do? His winning simply shows the politics of the award and in my opinion reduces the value of it significantly.
My Uncle who has been a Mission Priest in Bangladesh for over 53 years has done more for peace then President Obama could ever hope to do in several life times…who is going to nominate him?
What Obama will do for peace has yet to be seen? I am sick of people saying they are, or were, ashamed to be from the United States…move the frick out of the country and see how crappy it is before making such a stupid statement and be respect the freedom you are blessed with.

Barak Obama is a sign of hope for peace and fairness in the world. His ideas, words, gestures and calls for respectful dialogue are inspiring. Guidance and thought, searching for agreement of nations should come before rushing to action. If he can get countries to think and speak together before they rush into war action he well deserves this prize. He deserves the prize for lighting the way and hopefully will be a leader to peace.

Ofcourse Mr Obama deserves the award. The Nobel committee explained why they chose him and it is a very reasonable explanation. What an honor for our country to have our president honored by foreign officials. It is a nice to have a foreign group say something good about an American administrator, for a change.

Do you have to show how much you hate OBAMA, if he were white you would not be critical you would be praising him. You are all so sickening

Obama certainly deserved the prize. He won it not for stopping the war, but rather for uniting the world in their common interest in solving current world problems. There seems to be a dialog now. It has been too long coming. Without dialog there can be no hope for peace! The prize committee said as much when making the award,! Wasn’t anyone listening???

Of course he does. He has made in road in building relationships w/other nations and the areas mentioned. He is a president for all people not one particular race, creed or color. When will the American people wake up – the rest of the world is trying!
He has taken office in a very crucial time – a time when the Republican
have trush us so far into debt that he
is being blamed for not being able to get us out from under that mesh is a hurry – it take monies to get money.
It take an olive branch to mend fences
w/other nations. Why not him – because he is an Afro-American – He’s still an
wholehearted American w/our interest at
heart. Wake up Republicans.

Are you kidding? Awarding Mr. Obama with the Nobel Peace Prize is one of the most absurd and ridiculous things I have ever heard. As he said in his speech after hearing about the award, he “does not deserve to be in the company of …” those who have deserved to win. This decision has made a mockery of the Nobel Peace Prize and has minimized the significant of all those who have won before and will be awarded in the future. The man has not done anything for the US, or peace in the world.
Posted by: MF Brown | October 10, 2009, 12:24 am 12:24 am
Chris Wallace was only half-right. I’m not George W. Bush, but I did not deserve or receive the prize. Being President and not being George W. Bush is, however, a powerful argument. Acting like a different kind of president cinched it.
Posted by: Fred Taylor | October 10, 2009, 12:25 am 12:25 am
I have no problem with the Nobel Committee choosing President Obama as the recipient of its Peace Prize. However, it probably would have been much better for President Obama if someone else had been given the award, then we wouldn’t be having this devisive discussion about whether or not he deserves it. The guy has enough to deal with already and neither the congress, nor the public, nor the media is behaving in a mature manner in regards to the problems we face in our country and around the world.
Posted by: Rob | October 10, 2009, 12:25 am 12:25 am
Absolutely deserves it. He inherited a terrible mess and most of the world hated the USA. To have the rest of the world respecting him is in itself an amazing feat in the short time he has been in office. For people in his own country to be complaining that he won is despicable, and they should be ashamed of themselves. Give the man a chance. He is our president!

Posted by: Kerry Reid | October 10, 2009, 12:25 am 12:25 am
Absolutely not! He has not accomplished anything yet, and his values do not reflect a concern for life. He could be given an award for reading speeches that other people prepare though!
Posted by: Sheryle | October 10, 2009, 12:25 am 12:25 am
I agree with Carol, President Obama is doing everything that he can to bring unity between the U.S. and other countries that hated the U.S. during the Bush administration. Being the first African American President will always be an historical event. This is something that most african americans and other americans never thought would happen. He has shown children and adults of all races that anything is possible if they just work hard and believe in themselves. I’m in my 40′s and since the election of President Barack Obama I truly feel like an american with power. GOD Bless Obama, his family, the U.S. and everybody else.

The Nobel Peace Prize used to mean something. It has been for achievement above and beyond what most consider human responsibility. What has President Obama achieved? What has He done?Even the liberal world can only answer that question with the answer “Nothing”.His speeches seem to resemble the fashion world`s airbrushed, enhanced supermodels.

I support Obama and believe he will do great things for our country. However to present him the Nobel Peace Prize “now” diminishes the honor of that prize for those that have come before him and received it “after” they had actually accomplished great things, not just promised to do so.
Posted by: Alison | October 10, 2009, 12:26 am 12:26 am
No. I have always believed that the award was given to a person that has accomplished an act of peace. Not to someone with the anticipation of doing something. I think it was awarded prematurely.

Emphatically NO..this man has done nothing but fly around on Air Force One and give speech after speech. He is a charismatic campaigner, which he has done constantly in the last six years, and now that he has been elected president, he is campaigning for the next presidential election, because that is all he knows how to do…campaign! What a pity that the Nobel Peace Prize was not awarded to someone who has actually WORKED for peace! This prize has lost all credibility with this choice.

NO ONE CAN EXPECT TO HAVE A PERFECT AMERICA IN LESS THAN LESS THAN TEN MONTHS WHEN THE PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATION TORE AMERICA COMPLETELY APART FOR THE PAST EIGHT YEARS. IF WE WOULD ALL WORK TOGETHER WITH OUR PRESIDENT INSTEAD OF BASHING HIM ON EVERYTHING HE IS DOING THEN WE COULD AND WOULD HAVE A MORE PEACEFUL AND SAFE AMERICA.

I would never think to second guess the Nobel committee who voted for President Obama. However he has already won one of the greatest honors our country has to offer by being elected our President. Why should we be suprised that the rest of the world is impressed with our choice of a leader. We should all share his honor in accepting this award. How ungreatful we must sound as Americans in questioning the Noble committee’s gift. Be gracious fellow Americans and just say thank you.

No, he probably didn’t even write the speech. It should have been given to someone who did something worth while, not about a speech. Now he has another reason to fly on Air Force One. He has flown more in his first year than any other president I know of or heard about. He likes all the fanware and admiration he can get.
Posted by: Ernest | October 10, 2009, 12:28 am 12:28 am
No, he does not deserve the award. The award should go to someone that has worked at and accomplished something significant through many years, if not a lifetime. Giving the award in hopes of what he may accomplish (with just a few nice speeches) is just foolish. I also agree that even though he may be against nuclear war and the like, he wages war at life’s very essence, in the womb.

Past winners proved that they deserved the award by accomplishments that bettered the lives of people. President Obama has yet to make accomplishments worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. We’re still in an unmeasureable amount of debt, caught in an economic recession, and our people are still fighting in the Middle East…nothing has changed.
Posted by: Titan Mom | October 10, 2009, 12:29 am 12:29 am
No, the award extremely premature. The significance of the award is lost and the award has now become politicized. Just ask yourself in the Nobel Prize for Chemistry or Physics is given for aspiration? Of course not the winner has to actually accomplish something. The fact that you have to ask the question tell you the answer. It should be obvious.

The Nobel Committee has determined that Pres. Obama is deserving of the Peace Prize. IT’S NO ONE ELSE’S DAMN BUSINESS whether he is truly deserving of it or not. It is galling to think that people somehow have the right to weigh in on such a decision. I blame this latest flare on the chronic diarrhea of blogs and twitters that lend false credence to the opinions of the ill informed.

Based upon his performance to date, I do not feel that he deserves the Nobel prize. All he has done so far is apologize for and run down the United States. To put him in the company of Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Nelson Mandella and other Nobel Peace Prize winners is a disgrace. It appears that the Nobel committee is trying to influence United States politics by rewarding B. Hussein Obama for flowery speaches that promis everything.

After only 9 months in office, there is no way that Obama shoulod have beenb awarded the Nobel Prize.
After 4 years might at least have been more realistic. Obviously, this is an effort to appease the Presiden after the failure of the U.S. to win the Olympics.
It only reinforces ones thought that the distance between show business and politics is indeed small.

I am bothered by the second comment from the top. Posted by: ZTexas | October 10, 2009, 12:32 am 12:32 am
OF COURSE HE DOES!! President Obama won the award for “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples”. He has given people around the world the hope that we have needed for many years. Let’s support him in his efforts and cease looking for the negative in life.
Posted by: Vic | October 10, 2009, 12:32 am 12:32 am
Let’s see, the Nobel Peace Prize committee is aware that President Obama has been in office just nine months. Yet they award him their prestigious prize anyway. What must be their motivation? What do they and others in this world see that U.S. citizens do not see, realize, recognize, acknowledge, admit, accept, cherish, embrace, honor, live by, share or respect?
Posted by: Cathy | October 10, 2009, 12:33 am 12:33 am
We should feel honored that our President was chosen to receive a distinguished award from the leaders of a culture and highly recognized institution other than our own. It shows how others view us and how values differ for the making of judgments. Todays critics appear to be reaching new lows. While posItive critical judgments can be valuable, political malicious criticism cans be harmful to the cause of peace and reflect unfavorably on those who make or encourage them.

You can accept President Obama as the new political messiah. He has come only to bring peace and harmony to our country and the world. He has met with nothing but confusion and deliberate confusion and misguided fellow lawmakers on capital hill. Yes of course he, being the most unselfish president we have ever had. A new broom sweeps clean so they say, but I yes, and everywhere but Washington DC. Give the man credit where credit is due. Let that award shine, as those outside of our country thinks it should. I’m sure many countries would love to have an honest, caring, intelligent man as Barack Obama leading them!

I think our cats deserve the award more them our President. Their purring gives me much more peaceful feelings than anything Mr. Obama says. As for real accomplishments, our cats haven’t done much. They mostly sleep. But then again, what has our Prez really accomplished in regards to world peace?
Posted by: Dave in Minnesota | October 10, 2009, 12:34 am 12:34 am
Does Obama deserve a Nobel peace prize for accomplishing absolutely nothing? HELLL NO!!!!! I thought awards were given as a token of recognition for some accomplishment or hard work in some endevor. Not as a motivation “to do better”. It’s been 9 months and he hasn’t accomplshed ANYTHING of any significance. This is nothing more than “Obamamania” run amok on a global scale. At least Jimmy Carter earned his N.P.P. for his humanitarian work in the U.S. & Africa and for brokering a peace deal between Iseral & Egypt that’s held up to this day. This guy has done nothing but make everybody feel good with his speeches.
Posted by: marcus | October 10, 2009, 12:34 am 12:34 am
Yes!!!!! He absolutely deserves to win. His ambition to seek peace and equality for all of mankind is indeed an idea that hasn’t been expressed by any world leader for a very long time. I can understand how the hate mongres, and the “immoral powers that be” are outraged. He has brought hope to the world, and they thrive on promoting fear to achieve their goals.

I have every expectation that President Obama will eventually deserve to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. However I think that this award is premature, without his having had the opportunity to earn it. I’d think that receiving this award now would be a little embarrassing to the President as well as a bit discrediting to the Nobel awards committee and its criteria or procedures.

President Barack Obama deserves to be amongst the Nobel elites’ club. Against all odds, he has engineered a new understanding of the World order in which America would listen and act multilaterally. His positions on global issues, especially the ones confronting this 21st century, have been widely accepted as against the traditional Unilateral American Watch-dogism which, in most cases, have even turned its traditional allies against her. He is strongly on the right path. He has demonstrably shown the World that America would once more, lead again!

The people that don’t think he deserves this award are a group of bigoted, undereducated, mean spirited pathetic people who are probably avid followers of the hate mongers. Why would you not be proud of him and our country for finally electing a man who is educated, smart and not a part of the bully pulpit that was making their own rules and not following the constitution of this wonderful country. This prize only covers the period of time Mr. Obama was a Senator Stumping away for a new job!!!!!!!

Of course he should win. He has been working day and night to change what the world thinks of American after the last disastrous 8 years. It is a win for American. It says people are beginning to have faith and confidence in the US again. He has done more for American and the world than the last three presidents and it is not even been a year yet. The only losers are those working against everything he is trying to do, just to see him fail. they are not good Americans and should be ashamed of them selves. He never even asked for it, but deserves it.
Posted by: Carole | October 10, 2009, 12:41 am 12:41 am
Absolutely not he does not deserve it. All he’s done is fly all over the globe apologizing for the United States. This is really classy!! He has a Secretary of State whose job it is to do these kinds of meetings but he has to constantly have his face in the press. First the White House, now this — who’s footing the bill?
Posted by: bamagrammy | October 10, 2009, 12:41 am 12:41 am
No. He hasn’t brought peace to anyone, especially our own country. We are so divided right now it’s pathetic. His plans to help the unfortunate tax the hard working citizens out of the country to the point that more successful business are looking for ways to leave or at least keep their moneys in foreign banks. What is he doing to actually help our economy that won’t cause further destruction?
Posted by: Todd | October 10, 2009, 12:42 am 12:42 am
NO!!! But, the Nobel Peace Prize lost all credibility when it snubbed Irena Sendler in favor of Al Gore. Even Ghandi never got one.
Other than the indeffensible adoration of the press, I see no reason so many have come to worship Obama. He is nothing but a charismatic stuffed shirt who can read a teleprompter. It’s embarassing that my fellow Americans slobber after him, and absolutely nausiating that the rest of the world seems to have fallen under his spell as well. It’s unprecidented…. Oh… wait… no… there was that Italian guy who made the trains run on time. Oh, yeah, and that well-preserved Russian. Yeah, yeah… and that North Korean dude who makes the sun shine on the children.
Hello! Does hero-worshipping a politician EVER turn out well?
This decision will eventually come back to bite the prize committee in the backside.
Posted by: tersky | October 10, 2009, 12:42 am 12:42 am
He deserves it. He said that he didnot feel he did, and that he is giving the prize money to charity. What more do some of you low lifes want? He inherited a mess from you know who administration. Bush was given eight years to screw this country up, and some of you want it straighen up in nine months. You are nothing but hypocrites.

No. I feel it cheapens the award to give it to someone with no accomplishments under his belt. So, is an accomplished speaker, so is Glenn Beck, but I wouldn’t give him the Nobel Peace Prize.
Posted by: Penny | October 10, 2009, 12:43 am 12:43 am
Nobel should have checked out the SNL checklist of what he has achieved….notta, nil, zip, jack, squat! Go online and look up who else was in the running with him. It’s a shame what the Nobel PP has done to all the other candidates….so worthy of them all…to lose to the most unworthy of all!
Posted by: B. | October 10, 2009, 12:44 am 12:44 am
Of course Obama does not deserve a Nobel Prize! He has achieved nothing to merit this award which, in times past, was for achievement, not expectation.
Posted by: Bob Kayros | October 10, 2009, 12:44 am 12:44 am
No. Obama is an inspirational speaker who has few positive accomplishments. The awarding of the Peace Prize to President Obama is a blight on the credibility of the Nobel committee.
Posted by: L. Cabell | October 10, 2009, 12:44 am 12:44 am
YES, he does deserve the Nobel Peace Prize. He more than meets the criteria, he has done as much or much more than many recipients. This is not about the job he is doing as President. He has reached across many borders and urged all to work together towards peace.

Yes, he deserves the award! Check out the Rachel Maddow’s show for a more in depth non-biased report on the Nobel Peace Prize. It’s an honor for all America.

Absolutely! He’s responsible for redeeming the good name and reputation of our country and for giving the entire world a new sense of hope for the future. My question: why are so many so-called “patriots” so ashamed of our country? Seems to me that “real Americans” would be proud that their President was recognized in such a fashion. The word hypocrites comes to mind.

He absolutely deserves it. It’s quite promising to see that the international community can aknowledge his acheivements. For those who question the validity of this award, I’ll be very delighted to point out that he has been able to accomplish alot in very little time. His inspiration has given hope to millions; he has simply changed the perception that others have about America; at the least, he is not afraid to take up tasks which prove challenging. I could go on but that might take all day. Simply put, we can not berate him for being able to accomplish in so little time what took his counterparts years. I highly commend all persons involved in awarding him this hornor. This is indeed a presisdent to be proud of.

NO!!! And to jjay…..What on earth does the Bush administration have to do with Nobama being given a misguided title??? Just another blind liberal who can’t see the forest for the trees. I’ll be curious to see the “charities” that receive the million dollar award money. Acorn will no doubt be at the top of the list. I’m sure it will not be public knowledge if it is anything like the stimulus and health plans. NOTHING would surprise me at this point.

Yes, President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. This honorable amazing man took on a job he does not need but nonetheless accepted and in a very brief time saved this national. Through Republican greed, dishonesty, theft and every form of evil, the country that my ancestors came to in 1663 and 1700 was on the verge of destruction and consequently was the economy of the world. All that has been accomplished is through President Obama and brave Democrats who face the wrath and the racism of the Republicans voters who should be hanging their heads in shame for the war, job losses, and need to finance every aspect of our economy for any chance of survival of this country. Angry about how things are Republicans nay-sayers. You have yourself to thank. Thank goodness the rest of the world sees Obama for the man he truly is and awards his actions accordingly.
Posted by: SDavis | October 10, 2009, 12:45 am 12:45 am
No, absolutely not. Obama has done nothing as of yet to merit any award, let alone one so historically prestigeous. (His selection for a Nobel is so bizarre that it made me want to say “a prize which used to be so prestigeous.”)
One thing that surprises me about the comments in this forum is this: whether you aprove or disapprove of Obama’s beliefs and stated intentions, why should any of us care about what other countries think of the US? It is every country’s duty to do what it thinks is right, regardless of any international sentiments. So if you agree with Obama, why not care about what he is saying to you, rather than the rest of the world? The US is our country, and we are responsible for it. The US is a democracy for its citizens, and “world opinion” is not one of them.

In president Obama’s short time in office, he has worked deligently , more than any other recent president, to try to bring the world together in Peace. He accomplished getting leaders of the world to the table, who refused in the past to come to the table, to talk in honest negotiations. I’m sure he has lots more that whe will accomplish.
The United States should be proud that their leader became the Nobel Peace prize recipient. Everyone should be rallying behind him. Instead, he’s receiving critisim.
President Obama definitely deserve s the Nobe Peace Prize.
Posted by: Sonia Miller-Royster | October 10, 2009, 12:46 am 12:46 am
No he didn’t deserve it, but what is done is done.
I consider myself peace-minded and peace-hearted. Call me a “hater” because I disagree. That’s a weak jab, in my book. Jump off the bandwagon of calling people who care about what this country was founded on a “hater” for trying to speak against the smooth talking, bend-over-now-with-no-warning, no-I-am-not-going-to-prove-I-am-a-natural-born-citizen-you-silly-americans administration. If what is done is done, QUIT BRINGING UP THE SHORTCOMINGS OF PREVIOUS PRESIDENTIAL ADMINISTRATIONS !!!!!!
As far as the Peace prize is concerned, all I have to say about Obama winning this is: Out of nothing comes nothing.

So tonight we ask: Does President Obama deserve the Nobel Peace prize? The answer is an unequivocal and resounding NO!!! He said it best by his own statement: “To be honest, I do not feel that I deserve to be in the company of so many of the transformative figures who’ve been honored by this prize.”
Barack Obama, like the progressives in congress he represents, is proud of a mind so open that his brains are forever at risk of falling out. He has dithered and changed his mind so much that now nobody, maybe not even the President himself, knows what he thinks!!! This Presidents resolve, though crucial to our Nations security and and survival, IS ALWAYS A WORK IN PROGRESS. For the Nobel Prize Committee to have given him this prestigious award is a travesty, a dishonor to all those deserving statesmen and peacemakers who have gone before. He has truly become our country’s latest Incompetent-in-Chief. We are Diminished!!!

For What? Making Peace? Where? It demeans the award and the former recipients. Obama is all show (talk)–no substance. Not a real leader with true moral onvictions but a reactionary. This is shown by his daily changes om health care reform. This is merely his reactions to the protests of the people–reactions to get reelected.
Posted by: elaine | October 10, 2009, 12:48 am 12:48 am
I would also argue that all the people in the United States who voted for Obama should win the prize. We had the vision. Sorry, all you Bushies, you couldn’t win the war and you lost the election.

Posted by: Sue Olds | October 10, 2009, 12:49 am 12:49 am
Every girl in the Miss Universe contest should now get the Nobel peace price because we all know that they “want world peace”!!! What a crock! and then, the Noble PP committee has to come out and explain why they gave it to him!! For once, the media is finally pulling the wool from their faces!
Posted by: sam | October 10, 2009, 12:49 am 12:49 am
ABSOLUTELY!!! It appears many, including the media need to educate themselves on exactly what the Nobel Peace Prize is: According to Nobel’s will, the Peace Prize should be awarded “to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses.” Therefore what he has done or not done for America has NOTHING to do with him being awarded this prize!!! First, It’s the Nobel Peace Prize, it has nothing to do with what he’s done FOR America and it is not America’s award to give, for all of you who seems to think he has done nothing for thi
s country! The negative attitude being put on the forefront by the media is simply putting our country’s ignorance on display. Instead of the country embracing this honor and being GREATFUL it was awarded to the PRESIDENT of OUR country, and the strides he has taken to mend our relations with Foreign countries, all they can say is “He hasn’t done anything for our country.” That selfish attitude is why our country can not decide on a healthcare plan, it is why we are a war, and it is why we were or may be near a depression!!! OH MY GOSH!! WHAT IS WITH THE MEDIA!! They appear to want to display nothing but those who oppose the President receiving this award… There are many of us who have actually followed the President and his message and attempts at mending foreign relations, but the Media chooses NOT to display that… Only the negativity, hatred… I’m getting to a point I hate to even turn on the TV and watch the news!!!

I think people need to look at the bigger picture here. Being an African-American I can understand the significance in President Obama getting such a significant prize so early in the game. However, I understand that having such such an outstanding prize was going to allow people to wonder and question, whether he deserved it. Although, there are many different sides on this issue, we as Americans, should be proud that our president received such an honor, just as I am sure most people were when Jimmy Carter was awarded the same prize in 2002. For just one day, Americans need to band together and be proud instead of pointing and snickering and judging the President.
Posted by: Claudia | October 10, 2009, 12:50 am 12:50 am
Obama definitely does NOT deserve this. To place him on the same level as Nelson Mandela and Mother Teresa is not only absurd but irresponsible. These deserving PEACE MAKERS dedicated their entire lives for this one goal and Obama receives the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts and great speeches only after serving in office for a few months?! If that’s the case, why don’t we just give the NY Giants the title of Super Bowl Champs and call it a season!! They’ve displayed tremendous athletic efforts….why not?!?!
Posted by: Cristina | October 10, 2009, 12:50 am 12:50 am
This sucks! I thought I’d be able to cast a vote here and hopefully end up seeing the results that would overwhelmingly show that the reasonable people out there like me think that this is a travesty … not just because he hasn’t done anything even remotely close yet to come within spitting distance of even deserving to be nominated, let alone chosen the winner (and even he knows it having admitted as much himself earlier today!), but more importantly because the deadline for nominations expired just 2 weeks after his inauguration and so someone (or the “Obama machine”) went ahead and had the nerve to submit his name for consideration even when he had just barely assumed the Presidency and there was absolutely no way to know at the time whether or not he would accomplish anything at all or not during the rest of the year!! And with that backdrop the Nobel Peace Prize committee then turns out to be dumb enough to actually act on it!!!??? What a joke …
Posted by: Tony Roubik | October 10, 2009, 12:50 am 12:50 am
Yes, he deserves it. The committee is well aware of the criteria. His credits are just angry that he has been awarded such an honor. But it doesn’t matter if they like it or not. The award is his. You are the ones who shame us by your obvious hatred of the Man. We all see through you. You are so blinded by your hatred that you cannot see all the good that he has done. You all definitely need prayer.

Obama does not deserve an award of any kind and definitely not a Nobel Peace Prize! The Nobel Peace Prizes, by this bad decision, have lost all important
significance attached to such an award.
The Peace Prizes have now been belittled to the status of Hollywood hoopla, in my opinion. What a really bad decision by the people on that committee. Obama has done nothing but talk and talk and talk. The only accomplishment thus far is to really mess up our country. The decision for
this award to Obama needs to be changed immediately and awarded to someone who has actually accomplished some type of work to benefit mankind.
In other words No, HE DOES NOT DESERVE
THIS AWARD. I sincerely wonder if he
even qualifies, by his birth, to be President of the United States?
Posted by: Cherial Matheney | October 10, 2009, 12:51 am 12:51 am

I agree with Jess, who wrote below: “Someday he may be very deserving of this award. But I think that for now this is extremely premature. Even he knows that it was given on the idea of hope…not accomplishment.”
Posted by: Bill H | October 10, 2009, 12:53 am 12:53 am
As usual we Americans believe we know what everyone is to do including the persons who run the Nobel Prize award. Obama has already through word, diplomacy, and personal conduct indicated to the world what his plan is and the manner in which he intends to do it. All the world needs to do is step up to its responsibilities. Will it work? Who knows? he did not say he was God.
Posted by: Harold T Webb | October 10, 2009, 12:53 am 12:53 am
Absolutely Not. He has done nothing for this country but aplogize for it all over the world. Didn’t you see the skit on Saturday Night Live last weekend about Obama’s accomplishments? Even the liberal joke writers on SNL get it. This prize was given to confirm the hatred that European countries have for George Bush. And where did they get that idea? Obama’s administration has done nothing but blame George Bush for everything wrong that’s ever happened for the last 200 years. Obama’s mentor, Reverand Jeremiah Wright taught him,,”No, No, not God Bless America….God Damn America.” Those are his words and Obama has learned them well.
Posted by: Ray Baker | October 10, 2009, 12:53 am 12:53 am
I didn’t know Nobel Peace Prizes were for “intentions”! He does not deserve to have been awarded it yet! How about all the people who are doing research to cure diseases? They do their work with the best of intentions, so then they too are deserving! Their work would potentially save millions of lives!
Posted by: Heather | October 10, 2009, 12:53 am 12:53 am
This only goes to show the world that the award means nothing anymore. It wasn’t bad enough when Al Gore got it and now it just re-enforces the fact that the award now is based on fiction.

Yes. His inspiration lies in his desire to communicate peace. Most of us find the politics of hate revolting and this is an opportunity to accelerate leadership in finding some peace in this wicked world. Who can be against the attempt to try and ease the suffering? Of course many more people are deserving of this prize, but I believe President Obama is in the most powerful position to actually employ the meaning of the Nobel Peace Prize.

The committee’s excuse is that he believes that everyone must conform to the values of the majority of the world’s population. If you don’t believe in America’s sovereignty, perhaps you could say that he does. Otherwise, the Nobel committee’s observations should scare you to death.

Yes, President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. He’s the most closely watched, most closely followed and most influential person on the planet. He has promoted peace, communication and strong leadership on behalf of the United States since the election and actually before he was elected. I can’t think of another person who deserves it more at this time in history.

For all of you that say that Obama doesn’t deserve the Nobel Peace Prize because of his position on “A Woman’s RIGHT TO CHOOSE”, I have a great idea for you. Why don’t you all get together and adopt ALL of the “already born” UNWANTED children in the world – that are living on the streets with parents that are addicted to drugs, have no food or shelter and have no one to care about them, are growing up uneducated and becoming tomorrow’s criminals and drug addicts. STEP UP – you want to make a difference – then start here and take responsibility for the children “already born” who need you. And leave your opinions about what decisions I make about my body to me. (from a mother of one — because that’s all I wanted)

The committee awarded the Nobel Peace Prize to the President, therefore he deserves it. That question wouldn’t have been asked if Bush had been the recipient. You have never questioned the committee’s action before, so Why Now?. It’s sad that you so called Americans who love your country can’t applaud your President on receiving such an honor representing our country.
Posted by: Dianne | October 10, 2009, 12:57 am 12:57 am
Whether we in this country think he deserves the award is irrelevant, the Nobel Committee believes he does. This just shows how much faith they have that President Obama can change the relationship America can have with the rest of the world. Maybe if the rest of us would have the same faith, we actually could change.
Posted by: Carol | October 10, 2009, 12:57 am 12:57 am
No! No! No! I have never had less respect for someone who was all rhetoric and no action. He has done absolutely NOTHING to deserve an award like this. The Nobel Peace Prize has always been given for merit, not promise of same. I think he should graciously decline the award.

No! I’m 47 and when I was growing up believed the Nobel prizes were such an honor. Now Al Gore wins over such a hero as Irena Sendlerile. The professor that planted the seed of global warming has flipped his view. Now we have President Obama who of no fault of his own has really done nothing yet. This is the first time I’ve heard of an award for something someone may do in the future. Is the Nobel group now just looking for attention. The value of the Nobel has now fallen.

Yes, I do think President Obama deserves this honorable prize. He has done more in 9 months to re-establish positive relationships with other countries than most people could ever hope to do given the circumstances. I say give the man a break already!! Change has to start with the views and perceptions of America from the outside as much as the inside. I believe he has done that and will continue to do so. Come on folks, he is not able to do everything himself. Let’s go back to civics class, part of our democracy is the House of Representatives and Congress. Let’s not point the blame at the one man who is willing to stand up and speak. I don’t see the critics coming up with anything better. President Obama cannot change everything in one day or even in one presidential term and especially not alone. God bless him for taking on the challenge. I wouldn’t do it!

Now… do me a favor and go into your archives and do a show on everything thing the President has done since the beginning of his presidential campaign relating to mending Foreign relations and do a primetime show for all to see!! Yes the president does deserve the award. The media should post positive reports and not fuel all this negative publicity. The president is making big strides in accomplishing his goals in the US and abroad. Horray for President
Obama

This was difficult to understand. We want to know the other 200 nominees and what they did. It seems that many of the comments are really anti-Bush, that has little to do with whether someone with as little experience has accomplished as much as others who have spent years promoting peace, correcting injustices, etc. While BO has many good attributes, it seems more than a little premature to say that he should get the Nobel Peace Prize. While he has perhaps brought a different attitude to the presidency, the actual accomplishments so far are so few that even the liberal SNL has started mocking him. In short I can think of several others who have worked much longer for world peace than BO. Far too early.

By awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to Obama, the committee who decides who
receives the awards, has continued the
tradition of awarding such prizes to people who do not deserve them.
Starting with Jimmy Carter. His peace
initiative with the PLO and Israel did not work. They awarded it to Arafitt, who promoted and supported terrorism.
Al Gore for Global Warming which is a hoax and is now being debunked. And now for Obama. These are just
“feel good awards” and have no significance in any peace process.

Yes. Afghanistan would have already been resolved had we not declared war on Iraq.
We would not have the extreme deficit that we have without the war in Iraq. Obama has given thousands to people hope for the future. Not only in our country, but all over the world.

Wow – talk about putting the “cart before the horse!” He has been unable to deal with issues facing his own country, and now the world is challenging him to remediate global problems! The leaders of other nations are trying to manipulate our president and are placing unrealistic expectations on him. Obama needs to act out the image he tries to portray when he rolls up his sleeves, and stay home (D.C) and get to work! I voted for Obama, but I DO NOT believe he deserved the prize – there are far too many people who have sacrificed and served far greater than he. The committee has cheapened the prize and made its worth questionable.
Posted by: rossi | October 10, 2009, 1:01 am 1:01 am
It’s not about race, whether we like him or not, about the last president, his dreams and goals, nor is it bashing Obama. I just think there are others out there that have actually done something to earn it. How do you think they feel. I am sure there have been elections in other countries that the politicking had goals and dreams of Peace but they weren’t nominated. What makes Obama different from all the others??

I find it ” unbelieveable that Barry Sotelo aka Barack Hussein Obama ” has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for doing & saying what..?” I find it impossible to believe that there’re brain dead dumb americans that cow to this person for reasons that just does not make sense. What has happen to true American Spirit, duty, & honor to this country.

Does Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize? Maybe the Nobel Committee can start giving the Physics prize to people who are thinking about doing great things in physics–no need to wait for accomplishments anymore. Congratulations Nobel Committee, this is a whole new trend!

Why would a question like that be asked?
Can we not as American be proud that one of our own has won the Nobel Peace
Prize. Everyone talks about 12 days in
office. That is not why he was given
this award, what side of the road are
you all traveling on?
Posted by: Dianne Yowell | October 10, 2009, 1:04 am 1:04 am
NO, He doesn’t deserve the Nobel Prize! He gives great speeches, yet does Nothing! He has left Americans unemployed, in debt, fearful of his healthcare plan, increasing the War, AND Failing to keep any promise he made when he ran for President!

The Nobel Prize Board is just a bunch of clowns. Remember, they gave Arafat, (a terrorist of the 70′s), this same prize as well in ’94. Clowns or not, Obama doesn’t deserve any award since he has yet to accomplish anything, except for degrading the US during his international travels.

Posted by: Steve | October 10, 2009, 1:05 am 1:05 am
No. Unfortunately, now even the Nobel Prize has become politicized promoting Obama for the pretty speeches he’s made instead of for what he’s actually done or achieved regarding peace. I like Obama, but this is a controversial embarrassment. Come ON people!!!!
Posted by: rich metzger | October 10, 2009, 1:05 am 1:05 am
A Nobel Peace Prize for giving good speeches you must be kidding!!!!!!! If the Nobel people liked the speeches the Prize should go to the speech writer; not that fool in the White House!!!!!! That fool has someone propping him up; he could not find his way out of a hat box without help!!!!!! He was so sure about the President of Iran and look what that taught him pretty speeches don’t work!!!!! No I do not VOTE but I am not stupid!!!!!!!! He should get a prize for wasting the American Tax payer’s money!!!!!!

The decision to award President Obama the Nobel Peace Prize was made by an esteemed panel of committee members, who considered the noteworthy contributions of many individuals and weighed very well defined criteria in the process, so apparently he DOES deserve it. Otherwise, it would not have been awarded (and let’s not discount the fact it was a unanimous decision, I must add).
Therefore, I say to those posting such negative comments about his selection; Before making an assessment, it would be an excellent idea to actually learn about this prestigious award and the process involved in making selections.
Furthermore, it is an absolute shame that some individuals’ personal prejudices have taken front and center with respect to everything regarding THIS particular president(and his efforts), who INHERITED the huge mess this Country is now in, when he is and has been working so tirelessly to address it. I am glad however, to see that The World can acknowledge and appreciate his efforts, even if many of his own countrymen do not!!!

I believe President Obama is on his way to earning this award. The President appears to have a plan in dealing with the Taliban on a whole nother level. If President Obama can peacefully disarm the Taliban and integrate them into Afghan society on an equal level he will show the world yes he can. I believe that the President is coming to the realization that some Afghan people Love or have deep feelings towards their one eye, one leg, four finger Taliban friends who have defended their country in past days.

It’s 2009 if not President Obama then who should have received it? George W. Bush??? President Obama is the best choice…he has been working his “Ass” off to clean up the Mess that the “Ass”-Predecessor left behind! Not to mention our Foreign Relations – shot to hell -left in shambles!!! Did you know that Al Gore received the Noble Peace Prize? Nothing against Al, but what did he do??? Awareness of Globle Warming is important, so is HEALTH CARE For ALL AMERICANS! War can never be labled as SUCCESSFUL! Thank God we have a President who will stand up and FIGHT for the ignorant, ill advised, and down right stupid INDIVIDUALS who want Choas rather than Civility! That’s why he WON the Noble PEACE Prize!!!

Absolutely yes. Americans should be proud our honorable president won the Nobel Peace Prize. Congratulations to President Obama.
Posted by: M Hancock | October 10, 2009, 1:07 am 1:07 am
The value of Nobel has fallen.
Posted by: Wayne | October 10, 2009, 1:07 am 1:07 am
The deadline for nominations was Feb. 1st, so I ask what did he do in 10 days that he deserves a peace prize. He is a proponent of abortion and even has said he doesn’t want his daughters to be burdened with children. Any one who stands for abortion does not deserve any kind of a prize for promoting peace. So my answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!
Posted by: Don Deckard | October 10, 2009, 1:08 am 1:08 am
Yes, Yes, Yes. It is not our decision as to weather President Obama is deserving of the Peace Prize. Why would we not be proud of him as our President? I believe that the only people that are not happy with this award are the bigots, undereducated and hate mongers who follow the ramblings of the evil talk show hosts. This brings to mind the MaCarthy hearings where innocent people committed suicide and were blackballed from their jobs and careers by a evil mans lies.
Shame, shame, shame. The previous administration rewrote the constitution to commit evil acts and get away with it. This man is a good man, he walks on water for me. God bless him….

Yes he does. He has SO much crap he has to clean up from the Bush Administration it’s no wonder he hasn’t been able to attack his agenda. He is also beginning to heal relationships with other countries. Give the guy a break, I’d like to see all of the critics spend a day in his shoes.
Posted by: Julie | October 10, 2009, 1:11 am 1:11 am
I don’t think Obama has accomplished much other than getting elected. As far as the Nobel Peace Prize goes, I think they should give it to Anthony Bourdain. He’s done more about bringing countries together at the table –not under it—let alone making awareness of the worlds peoples on all levels.
Posted by: Rose | October 10, 2009, 1:11 am 1:11 am
I have to say that I thought it was quite a shock that he was awarded the NOBEL PEACE PRIZE…it is a bit of an insult to all those past recipients, as OBama has not done anything…why are our troops still dying in Afgan or Iraq? And this is the same man who wants to increase troop numbers? Peace prize…I think it’s crazy!
Posted by: Leonard | October 10, 2009, 1:12 am 1:12 am
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Mother Teresa
Barak Obama
Which one of these does not belong?
I thought the Nobel Peace Prize had to be earned. Obama has done nothing to deserve this prize and now we all know that this award means nothing.

Well, of course not. . . it even caught him off gaurd. .. rediculous. Who knows what these do gooders were thinking. Even to the biggest Obama supporter, you would have to admit that, considering the circumstances, this makes a mockery of what was once considered an honor to recieve.
Posted by: Ron B | October 10, 2009, 1:13 am 1:13 am
I do not see why so many are so upset about the President winning the Nobel Peace Prize, for he is more than worthy of winnig it. I don’t see any of the Critics doing anything but criticizing.
Posted by: Dot | October 10, 2009, 1:13 am 1:13 am
Obama hasn’t done anything to deserve this award. His only known talent is reading ‘his speeches’ written by these 30 to 35 czars he has appointed. He hasn’t done anything except make the government much, much bigger. These big changes he promised during his campaign are more like dismantling our country piece by piece. It normally takes craftsmen years, and years to hone their skill to become an expert in their field; for Obama, his only skill is knowing how to reading script written by his 35 czars on the off screen tele a prompter. So his only skill needed, is the ability to READ (wow). He must be very proud to win a Nobel prize for having a great gift of gab!!!
I think he should be given an award for sending our country into bankruptcy and being a complete do-nothing president.

The fact that we had 8 years of fear of the Cheney/Bush admin. Where they claimed our religion for their own war and personal gain in Wallstreet and we couldn’t go to our christian church unless we agreed to them bullying every country and all Americans. To have a president that actually not only Americans can believe in but that the rest of the world gives credit to; and recognizes that he alone cannot do more than extend the olive leaf of the dove of peace who landed on Noah’s Ark, because of politics most presidents can accomplish very little in our own country due to congress. They didn’t say he could do it by himself, they just said that as a world he gives them hope of Peace. That is the Nobel Peace Prize. Hope of Peace. Lost in a sea of selfishness(capitalisim), political and religious war, the world stood up and gave us the American people the greatest honor. This honor was not chosen by one person, one country, it was given as President Obama said not to him alone, but to us the American people, in the belief that we have through President Obama, the respect of the world to bring peace into a world that we encouraged into globization, then bullied them(by the former admin), treating them like teenage chilren, dragged them into recession, by former admin for their own personal gain. That they are giving us such a privilege when we are in our darkest hour after the previous admin. This was an olive branch from the world given to us, to let us believe we have something to hope for, because the rest of world who voted for our President believes in us. It is not just about President Obama, it is about we have someone we elected that the rest of the respects that only they can believe in but we should believe in him if we want to continue to have the rest of the world cooperate, instead of bullying. Yes, we do have the most military capabilities, but the cost of keeping the rest of world safe vs. bullying them? As the fear former admin. Wouldn’t we want to be more respected for peace?

It is waaaay to early to tell. Not necessarily unwarranted but definately premature by previous standards and kind of an insult to those who earned this award in the past with years of service.

You see the point is, former president Bush wasn’t the worst president in history It’s just that Obama is so much better. Obama deserves credit for bringing the country back from the brink, we are not completely there but we are returning. My guess is that by the time 2012 comes Rush Limbaugh will be wearing an Obama T-shirt.

Well I am proud of our President, but I believe that he needs to execute the ideas for a better nation and world that he talks about in his speeches. Maybe the Committee gave him the award not for what he has done but for what he represents.

The President, though I respect his office, has done nothing in this world to even consider accepting a Nobel Peace prize. Alfred Nobel himself would have laughed at the notion that Obama would get such an honored award.

NO he does not deserve this! He has done Nothing! The nobel prize seems to be given to left wing extremist kooks only, Gore, Carter, Obama, Arafat…..
Obama is the worst president in history now the 2 worst presidents Obama and Carter have nobel peace prizes…
Guess even the Nobel prize is political now…
what a disgusting shame.

Hell no!!!! The Nobel prize means nothing anymore. First they give it to Gore, what a joke. Trying to “save the world”, while having the largest carbon footprint of anybody. Now they give it to Obama, who has done absolutely NOTHING. He can read a speach from his teleprompter, but thats the end of it.
Posted by: mike | October 10, 2009, 1:19 am 1:19 am
Absolutely not. He may be an eloquent speaker, but most, if not all, of his speeches are written by other people. He hasn’t accomplished much to deserve it. There are more pressing issues in the world and America than trying to get the 2016 Olympics in Chicago. And plus, he acts more like a celebrity than a president.

Those of you who think he is going to convince Iran and No. Korea to drop its nuclear projects, you are crazy. All he has done is talk, I have not seen any action. This just shows what a bunch of nut cases are on the Nobel panel, he is no Mother Theresa and admitted it himself in his speech this morning. He should have thanked and excused himself from receiving the award. At least he is donating the money, probably out of embarassment.
Posted by: Lynda Peil | October 10, 2009, 1:21 am 1:21 am
No, he hasn’t done ANYTHING! And if people are just now becoming proud of the US because of this man than they really need to check out the rights that we have. Women, blacks, and other minorities have the right to vote, run for office and voice our opinions! What has Obama changed that has made you so proud? Seriously, what has he done?
Posted by: Jenny | October 10, 2009, 1:21 am 1:21 am
Yes, Obama deserves the Peace Prize for his accomplishment in raising world opinion of the U.S. and the Office of the President of the U.S.. Obama’s accomplishments promoting peace and diplomacy are monumental when measured against the Bush Admin.’s policies of fear, torture, hatred, mistrust, racism and utter stupidity.

OMG! Where exactly is there more peace in this world because of Obama’s 9 months in office? I for one sleep less, work harder and have an ulcer due to higher taxes, less income, and excess government spending! How does a promise to bring our troops home, reversed into sending more military abroad, constitute PEACE?
I must have missed something somewhere!! ? Send they’re handing out awards, can I have one for almost surviving this year?
Posted by: Deb Penk | October 10, 2009, 1:22 am 1:22 am
So President Obama receives an award for “cleaning up the mess left behind”? I wonder if you all remember where you were the day our family members, our friends, our neighbors, our husbands, our wives, our children died at the senseless hands of terrorists….now, this great symbol of “peace” goes to those very people that brought such pain and anguish to our country and tells them “it’s ok, America forgives you, let’s be friends”..are you kidding me? Let’s give him an award for being the best actor around, he sure puts on a good show!
Posted by: Tanya | October 10, 2009, 1:23 am 1:23 am
Yes, he deserve it. President Obama believes in diplomacy, instead of conflict, Respect, instead of disrespect. He is an honest and an intelligent person, and uses his words wisely.

Poor Mr Alfred Nobel!! His tomb maybe exploded today. First let see what Obama will acomplish, he needs more time. Problems are too big to be resolveld in 9 months. I hope he will keep his promises. We need to cool down now. No more fuzz for this award….let the time go and maybe we will get something positive in the long run.

No, no, and no. What has he done to deserve such an award.
It is disgusting that we would accept.
Then again his ego is so big, he couldn’t help but accept, just another feather in a cap not well worn in the first place. So sad, what is the world becoming?

To Pamela K, 12:13 am. post – GREAT POST! I will pass it on. And, Lesley at 1:04 am, great point! To answer another post: Every incoming president has dealt with cleaning up the last administrations mistakes. Get off the “let’s blame Bush” rant. Everyone is tired of hearing that same ‘ole excuse and blame game. It’s already been a year and we are still hearing that garbage. No more excuses – democrats and repubs are to blame for where we are at today!! Start doing the job you said you would do, Mr. Obama, when you became our president. Quit flying around the nation, holding townhalls (campaigning), and appearing on late night talk shows. You were not voted in to win an Oscar, Obama, but to run the country. Even the Sunday talk show pundits are starting to ask, just exactly how much time DOES our new president spend in the Oval Office? Stay in Washington D.C. and get to work, quite campaigning already. Who knows, Obama’s people say that they were all so shocked that he won the prize, how do we know that? The Nobel committee has been working on this bestowment for a long time, and word never leaked out?…hmm. Well, maybe so. So, Obama must have more friends in Europe than at home, and unfortunately for him, we are the ones that voted him in and can vote him out. Personally, I know that no one man runs this country and it is a tough job. No ones expects Obama to be our ‘deliverer’ – and, I think people appreciate that he is not as radical (at least, not as yet) as he has been labeled. However, when we are all hurting financially, and the Obamas spend thousands of dollars flying on the presidential jet, jaunting over to N.Y. on a date, and taking constant vacations, we say “wait, do all that when you are out of office.” Don’t spend our tax money on frivolous actions – we have no food to eat, no money for gas, and no medicine to heal. Give us back some of that tax money so we can take our family out on the town once in a while. You like to appear on camera with no tie and your shirt sleeves rolled up – nice look and we might fall for it when you actually start spending more time at home – in D.C.

I am sick and tired of people comparing Obama to the works of God… first of all i refuse to believe anything our “so called president” says until he follows through on atleast one thing he promised and built his campaign on!!! Like medical, or more important the jobs he promised!!! as far as im concerned he is a fraud…
I DO NOT beieve that Obama should be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. It is one thing to preach and another to walk the walk.
If you want to compare him to anyone in the bible i would compare him to the anti-christ. I know you might think this is harsh but think about it… He is practically screams world peace, but does not strive to have peace in our own country. Show me one country, besides our beautiful America, that believes in complete freedom, peace to all nations, and helping others before themseleves, and i will show you a liar!
To wrap it up He DOES NOT DESERVES THE AWARD!!!!!

Has anybody paid attention to the fact that in order to be eligible for this award the submission had to be provided to the Nobel committee less than two (2) weeks (Feb. 2nd) after Obama wasinaugurated? Precient or ridiculous? Broad ranging nonsense, but clearly the rest of the world is quite comfortable with Mr. Obama. Are you?

All I can say is, I’ll bet Alfred Nobel is spinning in his grave. To have his name associated with this particular award to Barack Obama, has to be the supreme insult to what he intended. We are at a time in our nations history where it is not a time for LEADERSHIP BY LIGHTWEIGHTS. Yet that is exactly what we have. [Has anyone seen Hillary lately, or is she still touring Africa?]Obama should thank God for Jimmy carter. Without the vicious anti-semitic stupidity of the man who gave modern day Iran, Obama would be the worst president ever. But at the rate he is going, I think he’ll get there very soon…If he doesn’t sell our Nation out first!!!

There should never be a question- “Does President Obama deserve the Nobel Peace Prize or not?” He was awarded the prize beacause the Nobel committee thinks that he deserves it. Why is it that the Nobel committee has never been questioned about their decisions before now? I think we should all be proud of our President and start supporting his efforts to help things change for the better for all of us.

I think it is safe to say Obama got his Nobel Peace prize thanks to one George Soros. I do believe Soros gave Osama’s name to the Nobel Peace Committee. If you read his back ground you will learn he is true scum and makes money off of others and pretends to be a philanthropist.

YES—WHY? He ran a campaign that bought people from every section of this country together hoping to make this country a better place. He reached out to other countries during the campaign to let them know the United States needed to renew friendships. (traveling outside of the U.S. was not a comfortable or friendly feeling during Bush 2 Administration) He has been second guessed in the past nine months for every move and every comment. (I wish all these folks had been around to warn us of what was going on in the past Administration. He has been insulted in the halls of Congress. (the faces of some of the elected officials was scary)This morning it was interesting to listen and view the shock and comments from supposedly nuetral newscasters and this evening Nightline ended with a question of what is next for Obama–The Lottery? Publishers Clearing House? (Mr. Cronkite you were truely missed today) It was like listening to the U. S. Commentators describing the Williams Sisters playing at Wimbleton and the U.S. Open and making sure you understand that they never root for those Americans to win. Too bad other nations have more open minds than we do and look to the future. Sleep well Mr. President because the next barrage begins in a matter of hours.

No, he does not deserve this award and has done nothing to deserve it !!! There are much more deserving individuals out there. Awarding this to Obama has cheapened the Nobel Award. What was the Nobel nominating committee thinking of !!!! In recent years it has become a political award – Al Gore??? Another undeserving “winner” !!!!

He deserves it…for not being George Bush!
Posted by: Don | October 10, 2009, 1:46 am 1:46 am
Good Lord he doesn’t deserve it! This country is in it’s absolute worst state even surpassing the Great Depression. The Great Depression faced the challenge of getting people back to work and a roof over their heads. We not only face these challenges today but now we have to fight for our very right to keep God and our Faith in our daily lives, pray that our kids will return alive from foreign lands who are fighting wars that a handfull of old men decided to start. He is surely working tirelessly, but at what? His efforts are concentrated on removing all references to God from everything, abort babies at will, take away hard earned money from those that WANT to work and give it to those who have made it a career to live on welfare and to those who are not even legal residents of our country. Obama’s commitment to get affordable healthcare for everyone is driven by the very fact that his mother died fighting insurance companies for coverage. He just wants to “stick it to” the insurance companies because he is now in a position to do it! Wake up people – he is doing it at our expense! I am really interested in which charity or charities he decides to donate his Nobel Peace Prize ill-gotten gains to. Why doesn’t he put it back in the Country’s General Fund! That is probably the biggest charity I can think of in need of funding right now! Step up Mr. Obama! Put your money where your mouth is! We have had a handful of “million” whatever Marches – maybe it is time to just have a MILLION AMERICAN CHRISTIAN’S MARCH on Washington! We need to stand up and get our Country back on track! Open your eyes America, Obama is in a position to change the face of this country and not for the better!

So now the Nobel Organization is giving the Peace Prize to some one who can read someone elses words on the teleprompter. Think what Ghandi or Mother Teresa could have doen if they could have read the teleprompter in addition to all of the selfless acts of kindness they did over a life time. The Nobel committe has soiled the reputation of the Nobel organization on the international stage.

As for the “esteemed” prize committee that supposedly considered all the noteworthy contributions and criteria of the candidates – you need to be replaced! This has nothing to do with Americans being prejudice just because they do not agree with the award being granted to Obama – hey, even he said that he was surprised to get the award – it has to do with being honest. You can fool yourself into thinking that Obama has been “working tirelessly” to solve all our problems, but just what has he accomplished except making great speeches overseas and at townhalls. And quit already with the “mess he inherited” – the democrats are just as responsible for our “mess”.

isn’t obama from chicago? if the nobel prize people consider american kids killing each other peace then i rekon he is very deserving of the award.he can’t even get peace within his own city or country let alone the world.

No! especially when I learned that nominations for the medal CLOSED in Feb.
Come on, get real! One month into his presidency! It was awarded based only on his inaugual speech which was excellent. Maybe he’ll add the money to the health care deficit!
Posted by: Cindy | October 10, 2009, 1:53 am 1:53 am
I think he was nominated by Joe Biden. For being so clean and articulate.
The Nobel committee lost all credibility when they awarded the Peace Prize to the murdering terrorist Arafat. But that was disgusting. This is just so utterly absurd that you have to laugh.
I’d love to have been a fly on the wall when Bill Clinton got the news.

Why not? Yassar Arafat, Jimmy Carter, Kofi Annan, Mikhail Gorbachev, Desmond Tutu, & Al Gore…….why not add Michael Moore too? It makes perfect sense to add Barack Obama to this list!!!
PEACE!

Absolutely he does. To not be proud of any American winning a Nobel Peace Prize, much less a President is a sad reflection on our country in itself. People criticize him for spending money, for not spending money; for sending troops, for not sending troups; etc..etc… Nine months and all problems should be solved? Wouldn’t that be nice! Reality is one person cannot solve all our problems and to expect him do be able to do so is unrealistic and irrational.

Are you kidding me . . . really? Can anyone say with a straight face that Mr. Obama has accomplished even a single tangible objective that should warrant such a rare and distinguished honor? He might have helped himself boo coos if he would have had the courage and humility to kindly turn down the misguided offer. We might have all been impressed and dare I say even moved. But to the raised eyebrows of the world – he’s going to receive it. Go Figure!

Sigh. It’s a bummer when we support the unsupportable. It’s deserving if you deem the prize in a very minimalistic way. If this is all the NPP is, then sorry, it’s not worth much. Just another token for the Black President. I think he’s better than a token gesture. Come on black folk, you smell the same ole same ole don’t you?

YES!!!
He started to restore respectability & ethics to our beloved nation.
For 8 years Cheney’s Republicans drug our nation down into disgrace. We became criminals torturing people to death who had NOT been convicted of any crime. Lying to go to war, profiteering, extra-legal armies like Blackwater,… All this evil was stopped by Obama.
Of course it was the RIGHT thing to do!
…the MORAL thing to do! But you know there were the people who were OUT to stop him…even if they needed to kill him to do it.
And it truly is a great thing when you can put the world’s only superpower back on the track to ethics and greatness and turn it away from crime and evil!
Thank you President Obama and God has blessed our country!

No way should Obama be getting the prize. What has he done? In one of his debates, he said we would know what he stands for by the people he surrounds himself with. Why aren’t you as “fair and balanced” journalists really doing your job and look into all of the Czars he is appointing. Policy is being made without public input or vote. What is happening to our great America? If you think this is the “change” we need, then you are as responsible for the fall of America as much as Obama is.

Sure he should have gotten it! Since when has he had to be qualified for or do anything? The First Lady should get a Nobel prize for economics too. With her hiring of 22 social administrators who receive a combined annual salary of 1 1/2 million dollars, she is doing more than her fair share to end unemployment while adding to the tax burden.

The American people are still looking for his promises to be kept. He is sending our sons and daughters to another country, when he can not take care of his own. Whats wrong with this thought? He needs to show the American people, he can take care of this country first. He is acting and reading from a speech wrote for him anyone can do that. So, no I do not feel he does deserve it, somethings have to be earned.

I don’t know why this question is even being asked. Of course he is worthy of it and Americans should be proud that he was chosen. It seems anything he does and now anything that is bestowed on him is in question by the far right. Get over it Republicans and quit your crying and whining, because none of you deserved it. Congratulations Mr. President

I personally think he deserved this award because for this few short time he’s been president, he speaks peace, engagement, i.e. diplomacy, he has stopped torture, he dismantle the so call missle doployment in the former eastern bloc, our image abroad has grossfully improved, he stopped the economy from total collapse, he is fighting for health care for all, and because of him, the whole world was unanimous in conderming Iran for the secret nuclear facility they are building. Now, what else do all you cynicals are looking for. Note, all the above accomplishment in 9 short months.

Yes he deserves a Nobel Peace Prize and I am glad he got one. I hope we do not send more troops into Afganistan or anywhere else. (And that we pull everysoldier home.) Hoping he gets rid of some of the people around him…and we all watch Michael Moore’s new film which is 100% accurate and an example of good old fashioned Journalism with humor and wit. Now if we can get Single Payer not for profit healthcare as offered by Rep Dennis Kucinch..no out of pocket money at all and everyone covered. The best plan of all by someone not on the take.

NO! He was only in office for 12 days before the nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize deadline closed. What did he accomplish in 12 days that warrants a nomination, let alone being awarded the prize 9 months later? It diminishes the prestige of the award to nothing more than a political affirmation of a political view point and not the original intent of the award.

Of course he does! No, he didn’t deserve it because he’s not Bush, that would mean most of us deserved it if that was the case. President Obama sending more troops to Afghanistan does not mean he doesn’t deserve it either, it’s pretty obvious if you want peace you have to fight for it. America has shown the world that!

Hi,
We Americans should be proud that our President Obama has won the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize. This is a signal that slowly the United States of America is once again gaining the International respect and goodwill. Unlike during the Bush Administration where USA is hated and unwelcomed everywhere. Let’s be proud. God Bless Obama, God Bless America.

It is still a tremendous honor, just to be considered.

NO!!!! The meaning of this award has diminished greatly over the years, but now we’ve reached rock bottom. This award has been rendered meaningless. I cannot believe the idiocy of awarding a prize based on a person’s intentions. If that is the qualification, then there’s a long line of people who would be equally (if not more)”qualified”. He was nominated after being in office for 11 days … and for doing what???? NOTHING. It’s time to rename the award the Nobel “Oh Please” Prize!!
Posted by: Julia | October 10, 2009, 3:23 am 3:23 am
In a nation that is healing, and please God growing from a history of people killing people because of who they are, a prize of peace has been awarded to a man whose hard work in his own life has helped in many ways to bring us closer to peace and equality. He has much more to do in his life and now in ours to promote peace, there is no doubt. But we question whether he is worthy? What are we doing for peace? For some, probably a great deal. If this prize is about peace, why are we asking who is worthy of it and not focusing our questions on who really needs peace?

Yes, President Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for his efforts to create an atmosphere for peace. It takes a long time to undo the DAMAGE done by the Bush administration. He cannot just pull the plug and end the war. Bush started two wars that destroyed many lives and two countries. We need to stay the course and try to rebuild the countries that we have destroyed.
Posted by: Nilou | October 10, 2009, 3:27 am 3:27 am
Obama DESERVES THE NOBEL. Obama has ALREADY ACHIEVED and ACCOMPLISHED IT.
Because:
1. Kicking Out Bush and Bush Regime is in itself an Accomplishment.
2. Defeating Bush and his successor McCain is an Achievement of Peace.
3. Obama deserved the Nobel Prize on the very day he Won Elections.
4. It is just like as if someone could defeat Hitler in elections, would have achieved peace.
5. The real accomplishment however is yet to come when Bush will be Tried and Jailed for the Death of 4300 US Troops, in the unjustified war.
6. Bush Misled America into the War, by lying about WMDs of Iraq.
Posted by: Dan | October 10, 2009, 3:28 am 3:28 am
Yes he does. If the 5 panelists all agreed and they have no ties or means to profit from their selection. Even though most thick headed Americans can see further than their noses, the rest of the world finally see a glimmer light coming from the USA. Finally we have a president who both speaks well, but more importantly thinks before he speaks. Let alone the fact that his message to the world is one of mending fences and building bridges (many of which had been burnt to the ground by the last admin. that has damaged America and all clear thinking organizations through out the world.

ABSOLUTELY NOT! It makes a mockery of the Nobel P.P. Obama was correct: he doesn’t deserve to be in the company of many of its previous recipients. A note to Bernard P.: Have you not heard that Putin, Chavez, Ahmadinejad among other national leaders, have all chimed in with their disdain for him? He’s a weak sister in the eyes of the rest of the world and is “transforming” us into a very weak nation. Mark my words: he will NOT go down in history as a great leader or peacemaker.
Posted by: Pam | October 10, 2009, 3:30 am 3:30 am
Yes! Of course Obama deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. It is time for this country and the rest of the planet to wake up to the brilliance of our President Obama. He makes the efforts and says the things that are NEEDED. He’s not focused on gaining personal popularity by playing the usual political shell games. He is truly a public servant. The public and media don’t know how to react. They are not used to someone being straight forward, honest and practical. This is what the world needs. It is wonderful that the Nobel committee has seen what he is trying to do and feel it is important enough to give this award for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples.”

Without a doubt YES. Read the nomination. President Obama has put forth an ambitious agenda, and has already restored America’s leadership and standing in the world by expressing the importance of diplomacy while at the same time standing up to terrorism. He has restored my hope, and obviously the hopes of millions of others in the world.

Of course he deserves the award! The President was CHOSEN to receive this award, obviously by people who have much more expertise than these antiabortion, anti Obama, gun toting right wing nut cases spouting off, as usual, and agreeing with the Taliban and every terrorist group in the world. You guys keep such good company, agreeing with terrorist against your President. Aren’t you so proud of yourself? Get a life! Suck it up-he is YOUR PRESIDENT too, even if you didn’t vote for him and/or do not like the color of his skin.President Obama deserves every award possible for trying to bring America back after 8 horrific years of the evil twins, Bush and Cheney. He hasn’t DONE anything to be recommended or awarded this honor, except give lots of speeches about how we need to look toward european models and we should consider giving up many of our God given rights that our forefathers recognized and implimented into our country. Before running for president or getting elected, he had not DONE anything; just look at his congressional record of voting — he constantly abstained or just didnt vote. (my feeling is he didnt want us to know about how he would govern when elected to higher office.) Give the prize to someone who has DONE something to promote peace, and not just someone who MIGHT do something!!
Posted by: df | October 10, 2009, 3:36 am 3:36 am
I think Obama does not deserve it, not because he is not a worthy candidate. But, because he has done nothing to show for it. The nobel peace prize committee has cheapen this award and hurt Obama in the process. Now, he has more pressure to achieve all his goals. Not good…bad choice. Premature and Naive choice.
Posted by: Claudia | October 10, 2009, 3:38 am 3:38 am
Maybe in the future he’ll deserve the prize, but seriously if you received a prize before doing something worthy of it would that make you any more likely to work towards acheiving it? It doesn’t make sense. Imagine if at the Olympics they handed out gold metals to some athletes before they competed, would they then trade the gold metals for bronze or silver if the athletes didn’t perform as expected? While it is nice that he won I think there is an underlying adgenda or some political strings attached to the whole thing.

Barrack Obama (BO) is a man of war, hypocrisy and lies. The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue. Endless threats of war are being made against Iran. Indeed, BO has increased troops everywhere that Bush had sent them. US missiles and troops are headed for Poland. By the sounds of it from reading all this brainless dribble coming from shortsighted bigots. Bush probably deserves it more than Obama. America really needs to take a good hard look at it’s self. Let alone anything else at least the rest of the world can and have recognized a man who wants to mend fences and re build bridges that were burned by 8 years of lies, war-mongering, hate, Greed and false faith. Thank goodness the rest of the world see us coming out of the dark, Now all thats left is for the American public to realize we are stepping into the sunshine. If nothing else at least we have a president who thinks before he speak and can string more that 4-5 words together without sounding like and idiot,

No, Obama does not deserve the Nobel Peace Prize! What a joke this prize has instantly become. What has Obama done to deserve this prize…absolutely nothing! He is destroying our country and getting us deeper and deeper in debt by spending our hard earned tax dollars on give away programs like “cash for clunkers” and bailouts. He is moving this country closer and closer to bankruptcy and towards Socialism. If anything he deserves to be removed from office.

Yes-President Obama deserves the award, end of discussion! Small minded, right wing nuts, and terrorist around the world, all think he doesn’t deserve it, or air to breathe for that matter, however, his love of this country is so evident not even these guys can deny it.Pants on fire liars never seem to tire of trying to bring him down but Americans in the majority back him and know he is doing his best and will in the end bring about the important changes this country so badly needs. Just be thankful Bush and Cheney are no longer able to destroy our country and disgrace us throughout the world.

Yes?? No??…let’s put it to a vote. Oh wait, we already did that last November! Really wish his detractors could find some ‘peace’ in a more positive attitude like he has displayed to also help get things going in a more positive direction for a change. Please don’t rain on the parade and then complain that you are all wet & that things aren’t moving along as fast as you’d like!

President Obama had done nothing at the time of his nomination, nor has he done anything constructive since, except talk. Perhaps his award should be given to one of the famous Greek speakers post mortem. I deserve a Nobel Prize instead for the cleanest outhouses on Hart Mtn Nat’l Antelope Refuge as no one, in using them in six years has gotten hepatitis or any other “unclean or unhealthy” disease, and that’s not a line of crap!

No,The award to the President is very premature, considering the feats of the last two sittng President’s,AND many others who have won this Esteemed award!! Maybe in 5 or 6 years there will be actions to back this up, but now, this Prize was awarded in the “Hope” of Greatness of this world Leader….

Can we all just get along?? Is the fact that this Black man has taken the bull by the horns by promoting PEACE unlike any other AMERICAN has done since M.L.KING, too much for ya’ll to just support BHO. No one is perfect but he wants and plans for US the US to be better…No more ugly Americans, OK!? When we attack our Commander in Chief, we open ourselves up to mockery and mayhem! Give the man time to do the work…he’s not a miracle worker but he definitely walks with the Man of Miracles and it shows in all he does – his pro-choice position is not an easy one for him but he recognizes the right for a woman to have a choice!!

Yes, he does deserve it. He has brought pride and hope to the world. Not very many people can do that. When he spoke in Berlin, while being a candidate, it was obvious that people in other countries loved him. I do, too. I can’t see anyone going out of their way to see McCain like they did Obama. He has brought back my pride in our country and I think in the future the world will agree with the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to him.

I don’t understand the negative comments about Mr. Obama not deserving of this award when compared to previous recipients. Since when does a person have to compete against previous winners? Yes, he deserves it. He’s done more for the respect of this country in the brief time he’s been in office than his predecessor did in 8 years, not to mention that things ARE being accomplished in the world as far as diplomacy is concerned, and I think Mr. Obama is responsible for that happening.
Posted by: MarieGee | October 10, 2009, 4:53 am 4:53 am
No. He’s escalating in Afghanistan. That’s not what I call a move toward peace. The Peace Prize should only be awarded to people who have worked toward peace. The “hope” that some claim is not enough.

Will you give a nobel price for medicine to a doctor in hope that next year he could discover a cure for cancer?
Posted by: G Cardas | October 10, 2009, 4:57 am 4:57 am
Another “commentor” said it very well…………he has asked for HOPE. Seems to me another great American had a similar “Dream”. Since when is asking for HOPE for peace not deserving of respect and recognition? Since when does such an individual have to be personally responsible for achieving it? It may never actually happen, who knows, but Mr. Obama’s taken a gigantic step in at least trying to get there!

Yes, he deserves the Nobel Peace Prize. The MAN just became President of a country where the injustice of African Americans is long rooted in the history of the country. He walked into a White House where the steps were built by Black slaves. Let’s not forget he did not start the war, he is just picking up the pieces. He has broke a glass ceiling and achieve the dream of a man that preached about it back in 1963, who was also awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. He has now opened the door for a Hispanic or a Woman, etc. to become President of this country because it is achievable, he is living proof. He brings peace because he shows the power of the human spirit to the nation (domestic and international). The man deserves a Peace Prize and any other award out there. Congrats, Obama.
The Nobel Peace prize is about the hope and work you have done so far.
Martin Luther King Receive the Nobel Peace Prize December 10, 1964. The first sentence of the speech, “I accept the Nobel Prize for Peace at a moment when twenty-two million Negroes of the United States of America are engaged in a creative battle to end the long night of racial injustice.” Martin Luther King do not stop injustice of the African American before he die but he still won the Nobel Peace Prize. Why? He deserved it because of his work and efforts.
Wangari Muta Maathai the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2004. The first African woman, and the first environmentalist, to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. While there is still work to be done for fighting democracy / peace in her country and as a whole. She still won. Why? Because of her work and efforts.
Al Gore the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2007. His efforts to build up greater knowledge about man-made climate change. There are still global warming issues going on. He still received the Nobel Peace Prize. Why? Because of his work and efforts.
Barack Obama the Nobel Peace Prize winner in 2009. His extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. He has not achieve all the things, he is set out to do. Yet, He still receive the Nobel Peace and deserve it. Why? Because of his work and efforts. So again Congrats, Obama

The ridicule “you people” throw about is ridiculous!! Sure he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia…every child learned that’s the RESPECTFUL thing to do with a King!! OMG…is it President BHO’s gait that is sooooo regal that truly pisses you haters off!! The royalty of the world respects the eloquent, elegant, enigmatic Obamas and embraces them with warmth…even hugs!! The Queen touched Michelle Obama first because she felt the realness of these Black Americans which has never before been so obvious from our leader!! Religious differences?? God will handle that problem in His time frame. Instead of judging what your President is doing, you should be praying to whom, what, why, where ever it is that you do for favor, grace and mercy for our planet. Some one mentioned the Moon blast and the Peace Prize on the same day being a joke…it’s a sign of the times we are living in…one group’s decision to honor a person looking for peace and another’s decision to look for signs of life/stability so when it really gets too “dark” on Earth for “them” they’ll have another planet to inhabit/ruin!! People, Wake Up…Imagine…What The World Needs Now…I Hope You Dance, and a bunch of other songs will help permeate the tough skin of “differences” since we all learned too, that “music soothes the savage beast!” The Dalai Lama will be given his due time and fullest respect in December, but the Gay issue needed President BHO’s full attention this time. God help us all and God bless America…and God,keep our President safe PLEASE!!

There is no sensible and proper basis for awarding this caliber of prize to Obama or to anyone else who has nothing but possible promise for accomplishing what the prize used to stand for. Nobel has been tarnished and reduced to foolishness. Obama could only have won this based on his being the 1st black as US Pres. Did that bring about peace. I don’t know.

No, Obama does not deserve anything..Bush, his cronies and the Republicans deserve every thing! You guys are nuts! I think we should blame Obama for every thing and applaud Bush, his cronies and the Republican party for the good job that was done for the last eight years..Nut cases! How people support a party that has no domestic policy and care very little for the poor and middle class is beyond me. Rush is rich, Hannitty is rich so they can talk down health reform..they are covered..some of you who listen to these guys every day and gulp up what they say..some of you don’t even have a job or health insurance..what is the hold these guys have over you..I am still trying to figure it out!

The Peace prize need to go to the American people who endure eight years of filth and did not revolt! That is who the prize should go to. I admire Americans for enduring the crap of eight years under Bush..lost the homes, jobs etc and did not go to the streets or turn violent..It speaks to the people..Americans are good people! The award should go to the American people..I want to believe that was the real reason for the Award..really to the American people..Europeans are amazed at our ability to take crap for eight years and not revolt..GOd bless the American people!

Not sure how anyone could justify Obama receiveing such an award. He doesn’t have a stellar congressional record and certainly hasn’t done anything of merit as president, although he seems to talk about grand intentions. Apparently, the Nobel prize committee considers speeches rather than results justification for awarding the prize.

Yes, ABSOLUTELY! The Nobel committee chose him over 200 others. I find it unfortunate that there are some American citizens that continue to refuse to stand behind the President. Stop the “bad mouthing” and stand UNITED! Much more would be accomplished if we could show the world the yes, “UNITED WE STAND”.
I agree with some others on Terry Moran.

Obama getting the so called Peace award is a joke.
They’re just trying to strap him in and use him. He has done absolutely nothing for peace. Totally outrageous and so unexpected. WHY???
Posted by: Ruby Reviere | October 10, 2009, 11:32 am 11:32 am
Why is this even a question? Who else has done anything close in the past year that contributed to the cause of peace throughout the world? Who else has given hope that there is world peace on the horizon?
Will it happen? Probably not. But a nuclear free world without a conflict with the Muslim population is a hope that is worth having. Aren’t you proud to be an American when things like this happen?
PS Desmond Tutu won the award ten years before Apartheid ended. There is nothing unprecedented about giving an award based on hope.

America and Americans should feel honored that our President and our Country was given the Nobel Peace Prize. By saying that President Obama does not deserve it, you’re saying that we don’t. What has happened to “United We Stand”? Bush and his administration released the meanness that is simmering in the underbelly of American Society. He turned the Nation of “John Wayne” the good guys into the Nation of “24″ the bad guys.

All this man has done is to travel the globe appologizing to the world for our greatness. Come you people. He had only been in office twelve days when the award was voted on!!! Twelve days!!! And you are telling me that in twelve days of doing absolutely nothing he deserves the prize??? May God help you to think!!!! The award should have gone to the dissidents in the running who have spent years standing against injustice. The only thing Obama has done lately is talk of expanding the Afghanistan war and bombing Iran. Nothing peaceful there. The Nobel peace prize is a joke. Give it to Ron Paul if you are going to give it to an American politician.

It’s very disappointing that they would put Obama in the same class as Martin Luther King considering his accomplishments to date. Obama would gain a whole lot of respect, even from me, if in light of the all of the questions about being worthy of the award he would “step up” and decline the award. Instead, we’ll be subjected to hearing about how great he is, probably in another one of his empty Rah! Rah! speeches.

Gil Hernandez – You are correct. He should reject it. He has already said that he doesn’t deserve it. If you don’t think you are deserving, you should give it to someone that is. I would view Obama more favorably if he did this, but I don’t see it happening.

John – Do not leave out the Iraqis that have died under Bush policies. Similar things would happen in Iran if Obama gets his way. Only Ron Paul is deserving of the peace prize with regards to American politicians for his foreign and domestic policies.

You don’t get the Olympic gold medal before you compete, and you don’t get the degree before you graduate, so why should Obama receive a prestigious award that Ghandi did not? We can have high expectations of a person, but if their actions do not merit a reward, why honor them with something they have not done? This was definitely premature, considering the nominations for the Peace prize closed only 12 days after Obama took office.
Posted by: Miriam | October 10, 2009, 12:20 pm 12:20 pm
First let me get something straight. Why was this prize established? Who does the nominating. what is the criteria to be nominated? How is the person JUDGED over other nominees? And is the prize given for what is done in the past, the present, or what is expected to be done in the future? If so this could considered a bribe to leader of the executive branch of government of one of the most power nations that has always been one of the most democratic and peaceful in the world until 911. That is not good. If this is a condolence far 911 your about 7 or 8 years late. So if this award is for sucking up to other nations who did not have the guts to stand up with United States and its allies to stop oppression and attacks by suicide bombers what is your answer or his? (Obama) I have alway voted more demacratic than rebulican in most electionss. I really wanted to vote for Obama. I have waited for over two years for something I could latch onto that was doable. But all I get is pie in the sky. Pardon me for not have the love affair other people have for this man, but until he delivers I cant be fooled. I need answers and they have to be doable and have to work. Can someone please give me the answers. Until I have those answers I will say no he truly is not the only one who deserves the prize. ALL AMERICANS WANT PEACE!
Posted by: DavStur | October 10, 2009, 12:27 pm 12:27 pm
I will try to make a statement as unbiased as possible.
The American people need to pull their head out of the ground when it comes to how they view the world from an American perspective. I understand personally that America may not be what we want it to be at the moment, but I welcome many of you to open your minds and look at the news and world headlines outside of the American philosophy because to say it bluntly; this award isn’t about you or America, it’s about the world as a whole. And quite frankly, America pales in comparison to the overall importance of the earth. So please stop being so self-centered about the award and have a little humanity and respect by actually congratulating someone. He deserves the award because those who have been put in place to give the award away says he does. Being an artist and designer I get so tired of this attitude everyone has when it comes to bringing others down because you don’t specifically have anything to gain.

Posted by: Dan | October 10, 2009, 1:12 pm 1:12 pm
I wonder why we are even having this conversation. Obviously the Nobel committee thought he deserved the Peace Prize. It is their business to make the awards, not the US congress, not the US news media nor the US public. Why can’t we just celebrate the choice and be pleased we are again viewed in a positive light outside of the US.

Yes. Of course he deserves it. I am so proud to be an American and to support our president on this momentous occasion. And I am thankful that our great nation is regaining its positive standing in the world, giving hope to many who had long ago lost hope. It is tragic that all this disrespect from Americans toward the office of the president may tarnish the vision of future generations who otherwise would dream to attain this high office. And it is unfortunate that the big insurance and energy corporations are indeed succeeding in reaching many Americans with their misinformation campaigns to delegitimize our president, reinforced by the increasingly opinionated messages of the corporate-owned media, along with extremists who are given voice to help keep their media ratings up. Still, we can rise above it all. People throughout the international community, along with many of us within this great nation, recognize the significant difference that President Obama is already making toward a better world, and we can see this as something very positive, and rejoice.

Show me proof that he would deserve such an award over so many other individuals that may deserve it over him. Heck even Bono the singer has done more… maybe he should get it, NOT Obama.

Of course President Obama deserves the prize! How many leaders could have changed the political climate so positively around the world and change the negative image of US in such A Short Time? and after so much DAMAGE done by Bush administration? President Obama deserves it just for being such a peaceful man & leader! For how peacefully he has, and is handling the racism, haterate and attacks of the brutal vicious far right! For how he ignores those attacks (ie: his speech to school children, heckled on the house floor, etc.) so he does not loose the focus on the issues or divide the nation even more. This is not something too many people/leaders are willing to do or can do.
I am outraged that as Americans we can not just be proud and celebrate our leader being recognized by a foreign prestigious committee. Any other country would have been rejoicing! But a bunch of jealous ultra right force us to waist time questioning the decision of independent foreign prestigious committee! Or poke fun at Obama! It is just like the losers and bullies in school yard picking on the smart accomplished kid! I am sad for our country! Even – for example – when recently an unknown Shirin Ebadi got the Nobel peace prize there was no questions. This is unprecedented. I am sad for our country!
Having 3 Democratic leaders (2 presidents and one vice president) winning the Nobel peace prize is a testimony to how backward, negative and unwelcome the Republican party’s ideology is in the eyes of the majority of people of the world (including Americans). You would hope it would have been a wake up call for the Republican party, but unfortunately it seems instead it makes them very uncomfortable and has put them in full attack mode. And the media as usual plays into their hand.

Obama “deserves” this award every bit as much as we (the American news media AND the consumers of American news media) “deserve” to weigh in on someone else’s prize process. What in the world gives us the right to create all this uproar about the manner in which other people in another country choose to honor our president?

I think Nightline’s reaction to Obama’s Nobel Victory was appalling. I compare it to Charlie Wilson’s “You Lie” outburst.
In addition to being the first sitting president to be recognized as catalyst for peace, and an agent for change he has done more to improve the American perception around the world, than here at home, and for “instigating” instead of “congratulating” Nightline should be ashamed of itself and its staff.

Yes he does. He has done a fine job so far.May God continue to protect him.

When he gives his life and wealth to the poor like Mother Theresa, spends years in a jail and ends Apartheid like Nelson Mandella, or creates a world government organization like Woodrow Wilson, then Obama can talk about a Nobel Prize for Peace. He is the President of a nation carrying on wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. He has made liberal use of special forces and unmanned aircraft strikes in these countries, and is now contemplating sending tens of thousands more troops to Afghanistan. What cause of peace has he championed? What actions has he taken to further the cause of peace in this world? None.
He is a great man, capable of great things, but he has not yet done them. This award was politically motivated and critically premature at best.

Yes, Obama has brought back pride,
respect, and dignity to the U.S. Obama also brought back other countries willingness to listen and negotiate. This is something Bush ignorantly, and shamefully got rid of.

I don’t believe he “deserves” this award. In the past, the award was given to those who had years of actions. This president has only operated off of words – we’ve yet to see any hard evidence. This has only weakened the beauty of what this award once stood for. Many people offer hope- few deliver.

I believe that our president is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize, but do it really matter what I think or what you think? The Nobel committee believe that president Barack Hussein Obama is worthy of the Nobel Peace Prize. As an American I’m very proud. Some of you will never accept THIS PRESIDENT, nothing he do will ever be enough. SHAME ON YOU! ARE YOU A REAL AMERICAN?

Of course he does. He has inspired without boundaries and returned hope to the world that it is not impossible to work together for a greater good.

The first joke was that Al Gore got it but he did have some results for his effort. I no longer have a high opion of this prize. Obama one dy might deserve it if he gets some results but not just for a few speeches.
Just wait..you we will live to appreciate the our safety under Bush.
Posted by: Bridgett | October 10, 2009, 6:24 pm 6:24 pm
Actually, he deserves any positive or supportive or encouraging things we can give him. I think the world sees him as the “return of sanity” and they appreciate that.
Posted by: patchwork44 | October 10, 2009, 6:46 pm 6:46 pm
No, he hasn’t done anything to earn the award. He hasn’t accomplished anything towards furthering peace. He got elected to the Senate and then spent his entire time there running for president. Since then all he’s done is send the US into astronomical debt and read speeches. The man is a celebrity, not a president.

There is absolutely NO WAY that President Obama is deserving of being a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
He speaks with a lot of hot air. So far he is a whole lot of talk, and little (if any) action to uphold his speeches that the world has fallen in love with. Enough of him!! I’m so sick of hearing his speeches, his plans to accomplish (whatever); and so far, no proof to confirm completion of his promises. Saturday Night Live has it right “What have I accomplished? Nothing. Jack and Squat!!” That says it in a nutshell!!
Posted by: VH | October 10, 2009, 8:09 pm 8:09 pm
give the nobel peace prize to sombody who deserves it. He has done nothing to earn this prize, this has just made a mockery of the nobel peace prize, and is embarrassing to the people who have earned it!
Posted by: tom kehlenbeck | October 10, 2009, 8:20 pm 8:20 pm
President Obama absolutely deserve it and he has proven it to people of quality and intelligence that he does. What American plebians and haters think does not matter. You can all go and protest untill you all bust your brain blood vessels. Your hatred will not let you accept this man and you all will go to your graves hating him. So you do not matter. The more you fight and hate him and disgrace yourselves around the world, the more he gains.

He certainly doesn’t deserve this award. People have worked their entire lives to earn this privileged recognition. This award is now tarnished, he should have humbly deferred to someone truly deserving. It seems he deserves the big mouth award.
Posted by: diane | October 10, 2009, 8:26 pm 8:26 pm
Obama definitely does not deserve an award of any kind, unless it is for ignoring the Constitution and turning our America into a socialist country. I decided that the Nobel prize meant very little after Al Gore won it for global warming which does not exist, but I have even less respect for the bestowed honor since Barack has done nothing to improve the government of “We the People” and has ignored the wishes of its’ citizens.
Posted by: Linda King | October 10, 2009, 8:55 pm 8:55 pm
The Nobel Prize has just lost all credibility. Obama is a know-nothing, do-nothing, who does not deserves this. Mother Theresa must be rolling over in her grave to be in the same company as this idiot.
Posted by: Anita Baker | October 10, 2009, 9:25 pm 9:25 pm
The Nobel Peace prize has already been shown to be politicized and discredited ever since Jimmy Carter and Al Gore received their “awards”. So it makes no difference that this discredited award to given to a person (Obama) who has not a single accomplishment in his entire life.

I now can now no longer hold a Nobel Winner in high esteem. This selection is a complete farce and insult to those who have gone before him.

What a “croc,” and I’m not talking about shoes. Other than some excellently read “pipe dreams,” which are commonly called speeches, He has done absolutely NOTHING to date. This award has diminished the prestige and honor formerly associated with this reward. If he had any respect for the award, he would graciously decline acceptance recognizing his unworthiness.
Posted by: Jim | October 10, 2009, 11:24 pm 11:24 pm
No. Obama makes me ashamed to be an American.
Posted by: Ben Joseph | October 10, 2009, 11:51 pm 11:51 pm
This is a “crock”! President Obama hasn’t been in office long enough to re ceive this award….let alone DO SOMETHING! Please….if this were someone else, but him, people would be outraged. Even Oprah deserves one more than him.

of course he does!!! the repubs are just jelious that with all their greed they know that they could never even come close to producing anything half as compassionate as President Obama…

it would seem that Obama winning the Nobel Peace prize represents a vote of confidence from Europe

I am proud of the faith that the Nobel Prize committee has shown in our country by awarding the Peace prize to President Obama. Every Nobel Prize is a gift both to the individual and the country he or she represents. Are any of you who complain qualified to be on the Nobel Prize commmittee?
Posted by: melissa | October 11, 2009, 1:23 pm 1:23 pm
In a word no. He got nominated within 2 weeks of becoming the President, nominations closed 2 weeks afer he entered the office. What he did in that two week period to deserve a Nobel Peace prize is beyond my simple mind to grasp. Oh well the liberals of the world know everything so I guess I have to be like a sheep and go with the flow. CONGATULATION PRESIDENT OBAMA for what you ah ah ah… yeah for bringing ah hope and ah ah change… and thanks go to Norway for making the Nobel peace prize a cheap trinket.
Posted by: James | October 11, 2009, 5:18 pm 5:18 pm
Hell no! Absolutely not! This is outrageous.
Obama has done absolutely nothing whatsoever to deserve this award. It is appalling that he was even nominated, just two weeks after taking office.
Millions of others who have contributed much more should have gotten the award before ever considering Obama. A key example is Ben Bernanke, who saved the world from economic collapse a year ago. There are numerous scientists whose contributions have been a major input to foster world peace. They should have been way ahead of Obama in consideration.
And, this bogus award comes so soon after giving Al Gore a bogus Nobel peace prize for making a movie full of mythology and falsehoods about the environment that he passed off as true.
The Nobel peace prize no longer has any meaning whatsoever. It is just a political fraud. It should be eliminated. It undermines the credibility of all Nobel prizes.
And worst of all, the award will fatten the already inflated ego of Obama even more. He will be even more arrogant and less likely to do anything.
The one thing that we could do to send a wake-up call to the Nobel clowns that made this decision is to impeach Obama. That would send a clear message to them that we totally disagree with their decision.

ABSOLUTELY NOT—I want to see some action. All I have seen is words. He has yet to do what he said when he was campaigning. 2 wars, with Iran coming up, Gitmo not closed and on and on.

Why not? Caligula made me a senator.
Posted by: Incitatus | October 12, 2009, 9:29 pm 9:29 pm
I don’t think a active President holding office should get such awards. After all, his acts are of being a nations leader and what the person does as the active leader is a act of responsibility for them and the staff under them. They are paid servants of our country. Elected, or hired.

A horrible lapse in judgment by the Nobel Committee, VERY uncharacteristic. WHAT were they smoking????
Posted by: Phyllis | October 13, 2009, 7:06 am 7:06 am
Obama has done nothing to deserve this award. In fact, he has just done nothing.
This Nobel committee is totally demented. They also gave Arafat the award years ago–Remember!
I wonder if Obama will wear his Qaddafi beanie when he accepts the award.

The Nobel committee gave the prize to “The American People.” The prize is for the US overcoming 200 plus years of racial strife to elect a black president, Barack Obama, and approve a hispanic Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor. As our elected representative, President Obama is receiving the reward for his nascent efforts to reach out to yet another, often maligned, racial group, the middle-eastern muslims.
I think it is a grand gesture of brother- (and sister-) hood for the Nobel Prize committee to step up and notice this. Even though Barack Obama’s daily life is struggle after struggle, the President and this era in history will, in the future, be recognized as one of mankind’s finest hours. There is still much resistance to the President, some of it is ideological, and regrettably, much of is is thinly veiled bigotry. But this baby-step, for the Nobel Prize committee to say “Hey America, the World sees you, and likes something that you are doing!” is a long way away from the flag burnings and angry demonstrations that our International neighbors gave us in the Bush, and other previous administrations. We Americans have become so used to the hate and disapproval that I am not surprised when some of us react with shock for Obama’s accolade.
We used to get that kind of positive recognition all the time. That’s why France gave us the Statue of Liberty, in 1886, and we had just barely gotten started! That’s why the World lets us keep the United Nations headquarters, all the way over here, in America, think about that. Thank you, Nobel committee for taking note, once again. After the “Sticker Shock” wears off, I think Americans are going to celebrate the achievements of our great Country and our great President, just like you do.

President Obama said he doesn’t think he deserves the prize, so why should I think he does?
Posted by: Jo | October 13, 2009, 6:06 pm 6:06 pm
When Obama said he didn’t think he deserved it, I had to agree.
Posted by: Jo | October 13, 2009, 6:08 pm 6:08 pm
Yes! He deserves it. He has given a hope of peace to so many around the world. True more to people outside the USA since many within the USA still seem to think Bush did a great job. After all look at all he accomplished. He started a war. Sent millions of jobs overseas. Constantly said we are not in a recession. Has disappeared from sight since leaving office.

Unbelivable! Shocking! What was the Nobel panel committee thinking when they made their choice? Wasn’t there any other much worthier and more deserving candidate for the Nobel Peace prize? Anybody other than Mr. Obama? Perhaps Bill Gates? Mr. Obama does not deserve this Nobel Peace prize. He has not done anything to justify winning this prestigious prize! Did the Nobel panel committee made a mistake in awarding this prize to Mr. Obama? It is a shame that Mr. Obama is accepting this award. I now have much less regard for him knowing that he does not deserve it! Shame on him for accepting it!!

I think it’s a European consolation prize for not bringing home the Olympics to Chicago, of which as president, he had no business begging for the Olympics. It was a humiliating rejection in Copenhapen but the truth is most Chicagoans didn’t want the Olympics, only the political croonies in power did, as money would sure have lined their pockets further.

No, the Nobel Peace Prize should be awarded on accomplishments, not expectations. It usually takes many years, and they are earned.
