EXCLUSIVE: Charlie Gibson’s Interview With Sen. Olympia Snowe
Senator Olympia Snowe, R-Maine, was the only Republican to vote for Chairman Max Baucus' $829 billion health care bill — she spoke to Charlie Gibson in an exclusive interview on tonight's World News. We've posted the full transcript and video of the interview below.
Gibson: And Senator Olympia Snowe, Republican of Maine joins us tonight. Senator you are now the only Republican House or Senate to vote for any of the health care reform bills that are out there. What do you know that your fellow Republicans don’t?
Snowe: Well I think that the honest difference is of opinion, but I do happen to believe that we have to move the process forward on this very difficult and challenging issue. Understandably people do have honest philosophical differences, but I think there’s a lot to build on with this legislation that after all was part of the group of six, three Democrats and three Republicans, for almost four months of very intensive discussions on a daily basis and on a weekly basis. So it clearly, I think, had built some momentum that makes it possible to construct a bipartisan package hopefully.
Gibson: The President went out of his way to praise your one vote. Does one Republican vote really signify any kind of true bipartisanship?
Snowe: Well, obviously not sufficient. We need to have more. We need to have support of the Democratic senators for example, who also can play a very pivotal role in this regard. I think in building upon some of the issues and where we have to make significant improvements in this legislation, so I think that if we can work continuously together looking at the issues having an honest discussion about the issues and what works what doesn’t work, that’s what it’s going to take. I think for so long the art of legislating has been lost here in Congress and it’s all about just moving it along on the fast track, and I think that unfortunately the big issues have been set aside.
Gibson: You said today your vote today was only your vote today and it might not signify your vote tomorrow. What would cause you to pull back? What does that mean?
Snowe: That would mean significant costs were added to the bill or significant taxes. If some issues aren’t addressed such as affordability, we still have to work on that issue making sure Americans have affordable health plans. They do under this legislation, but we need to do more and to be certain of that. And finally, of course, the public option. That is not an area I have agreed to. I don’t want government at the outset of the process. It really could shut off the private sector. I think the private sector can do a lot because of the market reforms that we included in this legislation that will compel them to live up to a standard.
Gibson: In a couple of seconds, Jon Karl said there is so much work yet to be done in reconciling House and Senate bills. Do you think we’re closer to health care reform tonight than we were 24 hours ago?
Snowe: Oh absolutely. I think that it’s at least demonstrating the art of the possible, if everybody’s willing to pull together and to work through the issues and not drive it through arbitrary timelines, which I’ve said initially as well when we began this process. I really do think we have to give it the time that it deserves and takes. It’s what the American people understand and they’d feel better about it in the final analysis.
Gibson: Senator Snowe, thanks for being with us tonight.

How do we kick her out of the Republican Party? Her vote is a disgrace, and her reasoning – if one can even call it that – as shown in this interview, is ridiculous at best.

Posted by: Tim | October 13, 2009, 7:18 pm 7:18 pm
Actually, she is not alone. There are plenty of Republicans who can’t be stereotyped by the Obamaganda of the far left and their friends in the media. I, for one, applaud the bravery of Olympia Snowe. However, I am still 100% opposed to this ridiculous legislation as it stands. It is hastily created and still will penalize Americans for not adhering to a new, Big Brother health care system. I am counting the days until 2012. Obama needs a pink slip!

Another idiot – the media will make her a hero standing up to her party when in fact she is just another pol. The real heroes are the ones standing up to the OBAMA fascistas. But the media, especially ABC, NBC and CBS slant it all the Dem’s way and have been doing so for decades. Snow = another brainwashed idiot.
Posted by: B. S. Davis | October 13, 2009, 7:23 pm 7:23 pm
Since Charlie missed the whole ACORN thing, I am surprised he knew anything about health care. Did I miss the interview with any Democrat that will not vote in lock step? Snowe, like Specter is just a country club blue blood who turned off her phones and hid from the people to make this vote. When they do this, you know they are going to vote against the will of their constituents. No matter how she wants to couch her vote, I hope the people from her state hold her responsible in her next bid for re-election. Hey Charlie, let me know when you do a report on how the CBO cooked the books on the last health care scoring. I won’t hold my breath.

Great – now we can get the public option put back in by Congress – and get it passed in the Senate with 51 Democratic votes thru Reconcilation. Most Republicans politicians are traitors to middle class AMERICANS – these politicians line their pockets with health care industry corporate lobbyists/donations – at least one Republican cares about lower and middle class Americans and getting them affordable, quality health care INSURANCE so 120 don’t die each and everyday in this country because they don’t have and can’t AFFORD health insurance!!!!

Yet another Republican who just doesn’t get it. Government has CAUSED all our problems. And this is a smokescreen for the destruction of our Constitution. “Fundamental Change” is due for the GOP, not our capitalist, Judeo Christian founded Republic. Lindsey Graham, John McCain, Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, John Voinovich must be defeated. Stand up for the constitution, not the elite liberal beltway establishment. OUT WITH YOU!
Posted by: davecatbone | October 13, 2009, 7:26 pm 7:26 pm
Why so much hate against Sen. Snowe. She comes from a state with a large independent base and she voted her conscience. Good for her that she didn’t just fall behind the other Republicans like mindless sheep. And she has nothing to worry about as far as reelection goes. Maine voters will not penelize her for voting her mind. In fact, they will applaud her for it.
Posted by: kendoll | October 13, 2009, 7:27 pm 7:27 pm
At least Snowe is from a relatively liberal state. Maybe we can’t do any better in Maine. I’d be ok if the Repubs boot her off the Committee and assign her to the Subcommittee on Widgets and Pixie Dust.
But Graham represents South Carolina. What’s up with that? He needs a major boot out of the Senate but year after year he shows up and sells us down the drain. Last few years it was Amnesty. Now it’s Cap and Trade. South Carolina? South Carolina? Hello?
Posted by: DaMav | October 13, 2009, 7:28 pm 7:28 pm
I am a republican, and I think she is great. She is setting it up that when the radical left wing destroys this bill, adds stuff for union members only, taxes the economy, ruins it with walking trails for Nancy Pelosi’s gardner’s house, another building for millionaire Ted Kennedy in Boston, then she will vote against it.
Olympia Snowe is setting it up to prove to the world that Obama can’t get it done.

Oh wow, I’m shocked that Gibson actually knows what’s going on. Then again, it’s a Republican voting against her party and her constituents, so he is going to pay attention. Unlike the ACORN story that he didn’t know anything about or the 9/12 movement because he was too busy sailing.
I don’t know who is worse – media or our so-called representatives.

Sen. Snowe has voted for EVERY piece of legislation this Congress has managed to jam through so I think she should be honest to her constituency and switch parties. Furthermore, she should repay every dime she ever dishonestly collected from the RNC.

I just had to laugh reading these comments. Senator Snowe comes from Maine (kind of rhymes with snow). Maine went heavily for Obama in the last election. It’s probably favors the health reform bill if you polled the state. It’s also probably going to go with Obama in 2012.
For those able to think objectively, how is this hurting her chances in the next elelction? The Republicans are just happy having a senator from Maine.

That is all it is…you know it just as I do, but at least I admit it. I have no job, so good luck in collecting anything from me for any of your so called health reform…but that is what you want, to deprive people just as you did with the failed economy so we wouldn’t get the choice…choice and fredom go together therefore, we just lost another freedom, instead will gain death, speaking of, mine is coming in a matter of time and I refuse to pay anything more to contribute to it especially now that I just heard about how Cedar Sinai screwed up in overdosing pts with radiation from their cat scans! Goes to show Ya! I think it is all done on purpose to screw people up for yet more money to fill the gov’ts and ins. greedy pockets. As long as I remain here, I welcome you to try and get into my empty pockets and then put a tax on me! Do the math, you can’t take nothing from nothing!

What amazes me is that she is a Repo at all…..she is very much to the left in her beliefs and she represents probably the most left wing state in the country.
Why does she bother to even be a republican is what I want to know. And her dumb vote for obamacare will not cost her her seat in the senate because her peeps will love her for it. Even so, why is she a republican?
Posted by: fleur | October 13, 2009, 7:36 pm 7:36 pm
She says she voted ‘yea’ because she thinks it time for the bill to move forward. This is an obvious lie. The bill will move forward with or without her vote. Her vote was meaningless in the outcome other than for the democrats to say, “See, it has bi-partisan support!” She ‘got something’ for her vote; you can bank on that.

How about “increase the lies until we fool the public long enough to pass it”. This is not about health care. This is not about the common good. Snowe has always skirted towards the middle left. Snowe, Graham, McCain (and there are others)are unprincipled “Republicans” who do not hesitate to cut other Republicans off at the knees. This vote today was anything but bipartisan but thanks to Snowe, it will certainly be touted as one. AlanG explained it perfectly.

Well my senator voted for this too. I am upset. I am out of work and for them to tell me I have to buy insurance or pay $700 dollars in penalties is absurd. They are gonna take what food money I have. I do not understand how they can sleep at night. Why don’t they just stop wasting our money and giving it away to other countries? Get rid of our illegals and stop supporting Mexico? Bet they would find a lot of money then. I guess they think they can just milk this cow till the last drop. I may be seeing some of you in jail. Those who can’t afford this insurance or the penalty. This is a dark day in our republic. I think I have been Messiahed way beyond what I can pay.

She is a good senator who represents Maine values. We are sick of silly bipartisan that makes it so nothing truly gets done.(hence our former Independent governor) She is one of the only republicans to engage in an adult conversation about what to do with health care.. Because no matter how you view this issue, our healthcare system is heading for failure and needs to be changed. The debate is how, and she is being mature and joining the conversation instead of spouting silly rhetoric. Stop calling her a traitor and try to bring a mature conversation to light, like she did…

Today Obama said that many amendments were considered and voted on by Baucaus’ committee. BS. No Republican amendment was adopted so this is just another way BHO tried to make it sound bipartisan. Snowe gave him the chance to actually tell the truth for once when he said that the vote was bipartisan. How could she equate this non bill with voting on anything of substance? History my ass!

It’s about time one of the GOP finally decided to give up the facade and actually work toward something instead of just numbly refusing to do anything constructive. Health Insurance companies pay big campaign money to senators… period… that is the only reasoning the republicans understand. She has not one once of moral decency or honesty – her only agenda is to bankrupt the American people that made this nation great – every single American except herself and her Liberal friends. How is it the Liberals want to spend OPM (other people’s money) but keep theirs safe? I wonder if she will opt out of the public health care and stay on the premier insurance that the government provides to all their employees, presidents, senators and congress men. We cannot afford RINO’s like her in office. Vote her out in 2010.

Thirty labor unions are submitting a full page newspaper ad on Wednesday telling everybody how unhappy they are.
As I see it, today’s vote meant very little in the long run. Today’s vote only was a conveyor belt – moving it to the next stage. That’s it.

Let’s cut off all funding to Olympia Snowe.
I’m on my last legs with the damn Republican party in this State. If our elected Republicans can’t act like Republicans than maybe they should go looking elsewhere for their campaign funding.

Very nice to see a petriotic Republican that is willing to put politics aside to do something good for her countrymen. All other Republicans prepare yourselves for a good old behind the barn ass whopping in 2012. Repubs made no attempt to pass any kind of healthcare reform under George Bush. They basically did nothing but got us involved in this illegitimate war which is destroying our economy. Republican Senators today proved that they are not in favor of doing anything to help Americans. They totally screwed up the country during the Bush administration and are currently doing any and everything in their power to prevent Obama from accomplishing his goals. The American public is definitely watching the performance of the Republican party.

With all due respect Ms. Snowe, please call Arlen’s office and request some coordinates. You are embarrassing yourself, your party and the American people. If your educated vote for the failed stimulus wasn’t bad enough now you have used this same decision making process being the only Republican to vote for this healthcare monstrosity that I’m quite sure will usher you out.
Let me ask you Ms. Snowe? What is “This is my decision today which it may not be tomorrow” mean exactly? Sounds like a position of liberal conviction not unlike President Obama.
Also, please allow me to clarify a statement you made, ‘My Party Drifted Away from Me’? No Ms. Snowe and you have this level narcissism to think that 100 million folks changed overnight and left you abandoned? You just don’t seem to get it much less understand it so please, do us all a favor and merely switch parties. You are a Democrat Mamm, maybe not in Maine but in the rest of this once and will be again great country as you will experience in 2010. You have made a decision today that affects not only the folks you say you represent but the entire conservative electorate. Ms. Snowe, you do not represent me or the 100 million other folks that will now support your departure. Oh and on a side note. Since you want to triple tax your own constituency with Obama’s policies where are the jobs that will pay this tax revenue Ms. Snowe? Oh, you haven’t thought about that? Figures, now follow Charlie “ACORN Who?” Gibson into retirement…
Regardless you’re gone….

Doesn’t anyone have common sense anymore. If you force insurance to take pre-existing conditions and allow people to wait until they are sick to get insurance then of course the premiums are going to go way up. The only other choice is forcing everyone to buy insurance and that’s anti choice and un-american. Lets work on getting the poor americans without insurance insured. Give tax breaks etc, but don’t mess up the whole system for those who are happy with it.

A few questions for you conservatives. 1) Did the republicans give the democrats ANY input when they were in power for 6 years (the answer is No)? 2) Have the republicans offered ANY proposal that had ANY substance to it, not just 17 blank pages (once again, no)? 3) Have the republicans done anything to forward the debate, or did they just whine about all this (you guessed it, no)? 4) If the republicans party is so afraid of socialism, then why don’t then show their balls and pull the plug on medicaid and social security (because they would be decimated at the polls if they did)? So, not that you have thee facts, how about shutting up and letting Obama try to fix what you and your party f-d up for the 8 years previous to his being elected?

In an argument, when neither side can find common ground, isn’t that a clue that the argument is flawed? Dems insist on the Socialist, State-controlled route. The Repubs insist on fixing faults. Like waste, fraud and the abuse of medical malpractice lawsuits.
The first is dangerous. The second will never happen.
In such a situation, perhsps the problem should be attacked from another angle. Don’t insure everything, from hang-nails to broken arms to eczema. Insure only catastrophic illnesses, and charge insurance as you would home insurance. In other words, don’t turn health insurance, or medical care reform, into the tail that wags the dog.
Is that so difficult to understand? Or is it so simple that only us plebs get it?

First, I am a conservative. Second, I applaud Ms. Snowe.
Get with it! She has opened the door for dialogue. She has established an exit plan if the tone doesn’t match the goal. I think it was very brave and wise, in one.
The ‘One’ who was to bring us together, has divided us in two. As a country, and as a party. The absence of leadership is apparent.
It is not time to denigrate. It just may be time to rejoice.
This short nine months are but a preview of coming attractions. We must be smart, find a leader who has strength of character, a respect for our heritage as a country, is smart enough to pick a strong cabinet and wise enough to listen. I go on…but in the end s/he should love America and want to do everything to ensure her prosperity.
We are on a long road back. We need to use the time well. Instead of, No. Leading the discussion must be the way forward to our future. And, in this I applaud Ms. Snowe.

I am a Republican from Maine, Olympia Snowe has never lost an election and never will. This vote has zero impact on her negatively, in fact, it helps her because Maine is basically a Democratic State. So for all of those Republicans who are mad at her, vent all you want, but Senator Snowe is not going anywhere, she is a Senator for as long as she continues to have the desire to hold the office.

Somebody said something about leaving the Union. Another person wanted conservatives to leave quickly.
Another person said something about a rope. I hope ABC Monitor will edit that one about the rope.
People need to calm down. This bill will be presented to the senate after Reid puts his mark on it.
If it turns out successful, then great.
If it turns out to be a nightmare, then we know what to do: vote them out.
ONE THING PEOPLE NEED TO BE RILED UP OVER: Our senators cannot receive huge contributions from the banking/financing industries and also from the health care industries AND ALSO do their job.
The senators’ pat answer is this:
“I can do my job and receive contributions from these industries.”
Apparently, no, they can’t.
That’s the thing we all need to focus on. We are really missing the boat on this one.

You, who are supporting this “reform”, are the **crazy** ones.
If you have employer coverage now…you won’t within a couple of years after the passage of this bill…no question about it.
Your employers aren’t going to pay your premiums, after being jacked up by 40% for offering it’s employees the “Cadillac plans”. (any plan that pays for EKGs or CAT scans…or offers vision or dental are considered “Cadillac plans”)
Which choice makes more sense to an employer looking at this health care plan…paying so much extra for each employee’s health care, that you have to let some go to afford it?..
…Or, paying a $1000 fine per employee, and just saying “Screw it”, and not having to worry about providing health insurance for your employees?
If you picked the first choice, you are an idiot

Is this correct?
Can’t wait to hear from the 30 labor unions who are hopping mad over this.
So, this bill must not be so bad after all if the labor unions are angry.

Just another donkey-in-an-elephant-suit, along with McCain, Graham, Crist, and Martinez. This is why the Democrats don’t have to worry about 2010. The stench in the GOP is quite willing to head to the same destination they’re rushing towards. The GOP just thinks we should get there a little slower. Ok. This bill will never see the light of day. It’s irrelevant. It was going to passed anyway since there were 12 Dems vs. 10 Repubs on the committee. So, what did Snowe gain? What was promised to her and how did she hope to benefit from being cast as a traitor to the party? Very confusing.

What should the Republicans have expected? This is typical of alley cats. Go where the money (catnip)is.Snowe has used the Republican party of Maine like as her personal litter-box: someone else pays the bills, cleans up the place and when asked for a reposnsble position on issues, vote agains them. Her seat has been safe because, no Democrat was needed to run against her. Well, along with the other turncoats, her nose is sticking under the tent; she has no idea what the Republican Party stands for re:small government, small taxes, and freedom w/o unprincpled licence. She might be the only Republican to vote for the terrible debt we are headed for, but she won’t be affected by it…none in the government will be!!

Anyone who can pay 100% out of pocket for their insurance, and still be in favor of this bill, either
1) has enough money to not worry about the 40% fee for having better coverage than others
(which makes you a jerk for being in favor of raising the premiums of working-class people who are on employer-based health plans
2) understands that all of this has absolutely nothing to do with health care–and everything to do with the government taking control over as much of our lives as possible…and that’s A-OK by you.
or…
3)is just lying

She Thinks, thinks and thinks. Then hopes. Sounds like Winne the Pooh.

I had a busy day today, I called my Senators and Representatative to ask some questions about the Health Care bill.
Both of my Senators and my Representative said that could not tell me anything because they did not have the bill available to read, because the bill was not yet finished.
So I called, (armed with questions) Senator Max Baucus’s (the guy who’s supposedly writing the bill) office to get some answers. Senator Baucus’s staffer informed me that the bill was indeed still being revised.
Yet, this afternoon, the Senate Finance Committee voted on and passed the bill. Now I have to wonder, if the members of the congressmens staff are correct and the bill is not complete, what are the Senators in the Finance Committee really voting on?
Also, why, if the bill is not complete, why are they voting on it?
The appearance is that the Obama Administration is pushing this incomplete bill through as fast as possible, even at the risk of getting it wrong.
If there is a need for heatlhcare reform, shouldn’t congress be trying to get it right? Not just get it done?

However, saying that she is doing something bad because she didn’t vote Republican is terrible. Political parties are one of the worst things ever to be a part of this government. People need to vote on what they think is right or wrong, not to be loyal to there party. I am profoundly saddened by Sen. Snowe’s vote. The damage these plans will wreak on the American health care system will not be apparent to citizens for years. Then it will be too late to undo the mischief. It appears that Sen. Snowe was promised dodging the military base closing bullet in return for her vote. Shades of LBJ and Wilbur Mills. Senator Snowe is supposed to be so conscientious, so ethical, it is especially sad to see that her feet are also made of clay

It always shocks me to read the vitriol and fearful responses of adults who resort to name calling and broad generalizations when other adults choose a path or decision with which they disagree. Adults, educated Americans, wake up, stop acting like small children. Do you allow your own children to call names or do you ask them to communicate facts. Please begin acting (and writing) like rationale human beings. Facts not fear.

In order for this country to survive we need real conservative values, obviously BIG government hasnt been working. Regarding healthcare maybe we can get the government out and open up interstate competiotion that would force healthcare providers to lower their costs inorder to compete with states that have less regulations which drive the costs up. First of all, the folks in Maine keep voting this liberal Republican in office year after year. I rarely agree with her. However, if you read McConnell’s comments today you would understand a little bit better where Ms. Snowe is coming from. She clearly is not going to vote for the additions that will no doubt be forth coming. And this gives her a venue to make some clear statements against a government run healthcare.
She mentions being against significant costs being added as well as being against higher taxes. Read her comments more carefully.
She walking the middle road. Nothing wrong with that right now at this point.

I loved the President’s speech he gave where he said this had “both Democrat & Republican support.” Really Mr. President? One Republican does not make it supported by Republicans. He’s hoping that the Average Joe isn’t paying attention to the process and thinks ‘hey — they must have worked it out…it has the support of both parties.’

The only thing bipartisan about this bill is opposition to it. One wavering vote is not bipartisanship! Besides, how many Republicans had input to this bill and how many of their amendments passed?
Posted by: Elwood Baas | October 13, 2009, 9:55 pm 9:55 pm
This whole debacle just depresses me.
Do these poor deluded people really believe this so called Health bill will be good?
Have any of these people ever tried to file for government aid? I have. In order to qualify for most (Welfare, Medi-Cal, food stamps) you have to have less than $3000 in assets. Think about that. That means you car, house hold goods, oh did I forget, you can’t own a house, have to be worth LESS THAN $3000.
For Medi-Cal, you either have to be pregnant, have a child under 21 living at home, or, are you ready for this?, have a STATE APPROVED DISABILITY and be on Social Security Disability. Now, lets say you qualify under one of these, does that mean you get Medi-Cal? NO!! That just means you qualify, it can take 1 ½ to 2 YEARS before you can actually use it.
I was told this as I was trying to get Medi-Cal. I am 53 with several serious medical issues. BUT, I can’t get Medi-Cal, because, of, well just about everything I listed above. The only people who can are, cheaters (you know, people who lie and hide assets), illegal aliens (please note: they are NOT undocumented workers), homeless, and, well you get the message. THE ONLY PEOPLE WHO CAN QUALIFY ARE THOSE WHO HAVE NEVER PAID INTO IT.
This socialist bill was something that came from the 60′s. You know, in their drug induced fantasies from LSD and MJ.

I just replied to the latest Republican fund raising appeal I received in the mail. I wrote in large letters across it: “Dump Snowe. Then come back and ask me.”
By the way, “The Guy”: I’m on Medicare and my advantage plan was canceled effective the end of this year due to funding cuts in the “Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008″ which was rammed thru by the Demokrats over President Bush’s veto. Some improvement, huh? No insurance. I need no more help of that kind.

Snowe may have an “R” beside her name, but there is nothing about her voting record that even hints she is a republican or a conservative..Joe Lieberman voted AGAINST his bill for crying out loud..Joe is a social LIBERAL, Snowe is to the LEFT of Joe Lieberman on all matters. Bi-partisan my asp! I’ll tell you what IS bi-partisan..and that is dissent against this Bill. This puts the Federal Goverment in between you and YOUR doctor..and THAT IS by DEFINITION UNCONSTITUTIONAL…you are no longer free to make your own health decisions! And the Government unconstitutionally makes health insurance MANDATORY! Total BS! Rise up!

Olympia Snowe, who is absolutely no danger of not being re-elected (she is immensely popular here in Maine) represents the GOP as it used to be: pragmatic, problem solving, and able to compromise. The ideological jihadists have taken over the party, but she’s not afraid to do what she thinks best, and to show remarkable political courage. She also has immense personal power, whatever emerges will be shaped very much by her — and we in Maine like our Senators to have influence, and not follow the “party line” like lemmings. But she is popular among Republicans, who are New England pragmatists for the most part, and Democrats here in Maine. Those who think she’ll be voted out, you obviously do not understand Maine!

This question is for Mr Gibson.
Questioning whether ONE REPUBLICAN VOTE makes this bipartisan, can you recall, sir, when ANY Democrat voted with The REPUBLICANS to have a bipartisan bil in that Regard???
Why is it that ONLY WHEN REPUBLICANS VOTE WITH DEMOCRATS it’s call bipartisan BY The Democrats are NEVER expected to be bipartisan by voting with the Republicans?
I real have n’t seen any SPECIAL REPORT on bipartisanship when Democrats join Republicans… Can you please Mr Gibson look into this scenario???

We need somebody (I vote for Sarah) to come in and denounce all the RINO’s.
Then we need to have the Republican Party threaten all of them with legal action unless they switch parties. I’n guessing they could win such a lawsuit (along the lines of damage to a brand name) and I think they’d only have to win once to get the other rats to jump ship.
Once all the RINO’s are gone, we can begin to gain the trust of America again.

I am a republican and I agree with Olympia Snowe. She sounds like someone who is judging the legislation on its benefits and weaknesses. I, for one, have not been the least bit impressed by republican leadership on this issue. They don’t seem to have any solutions or new ideas. They seem very content to allow Americans to pay more and get less in the way of healthcare than any other modern country. I am tired of high US pharmaceutical prices subsidizing the (government negotiated) low cost medications sold in Canada and France. Americans deserve a government that gets them the best deal possible. Why does the republican leadership seem so determined to make sure we pay more than we should have to?

On Bi-Partisanship: Senator Snowe, this is not the time to be Bi-Partisan, the political system in this county was designed for spirited debate and contention by our founding fathers. This debate and contention is designed to protect the citizens from Government, our founding fathers were oppressed by tyranny and were wise enough to create a government that would not have the single-mindedness of a tyrant.

They should have had a solid block against this bill- or better yet, not even have voted as they were frozen out of its being crafted. There is so much nonsense on this comment board that I would like to point one thing out:
If you have health insurance, you are ALREADY paying for the freeloaders who don’t. When uninsured Uncle Buck goes into the emergency room and gets a bill of $1400 for 3 stitches that he can’t pay for, the hospital just raises its prices to make up the difference. Who pays more? Your insurance company. And they pass that cost on to you in the form of higher premiums. So if you hate freeloaders and you hate paying for everyone else’s health care, then you should LOVE this reform package. It makes sure everyone who can pay pays something.
I may be a republican, but even I can see that the current system only encourages people to “shoplift” their healthcare and throw the added costs onto those who are responsible enough to have health insurance. The current system is nothing more than free market welfare. Everyone should have to pay something. Period.

All members of Congress that vote for an Healthcare bill that exclude them and their cohorts will therefore be guilty by said action and will be in violation of their oath of office, and guilty of Malfeasance of Office; and will be investigated for their connections with the enemies of the Constitution that are behind any legislation that would create two separate groups of citizenry: those to whom the healthcare law applies-; and those that are more equal, and are EXEMPT from the law.

Congress has voted for Stimulus Packages, Cap and Trade, TARP, Auto industry rescues, and any number of things that take care of Lobbyists, Big Business, and Labor. Who is looking out for the working man and woman in this country? Remember us? TRILLIONS of dollars have been spent, See any new Jobs? Who’s paying for all this? It’s not Big Business, or the rich, or the folks in Washington. It is paid for by the working man and woman in the country. I have spent sometime looking at the comments and it is easily 4 to 1 against Snowe and the Obamacare plan. The only positive responses are from liberals that use th etired old arguments like :
a> Big Business is evil (except everyone’s 401K depends on them being successfull as does the economy as a whole)
b> thousands…no millions are dying because of a lack of healthcare. We all die from a lack of health care! This is what kills us! Our health fades. We cannot always be saved otherwise we would live forever. Obamacare cannot change this
c> Every Republican senator is on the take, of course the democrats are not
d> liberals always bring up George Bush’s name as often as they can and blame 8 years on him even if Democrats have run congress for the last 3
e> Finally liberals say we are not having a discussion. Guess what we don’t want to talk about it we don’t agree with it
enough said
4 to 1 2010 is gonna be a great year, for conservatives

Geez, from the Drudgereport inspired comments (you can see where Drudge readers are politically!) it’s clear that a lot of people are out of touch with reality. Snowe is popular and has no danger of not being re-elected. Obama is at 56% approval. Americans support Democrats over Republicans in a generic ballot. All the talk about revolutions and “traitors” is emotional sillyness reflecting impotence rather than real political convictions. Grow up.

The legislation will not solve the problems in our system. It is a very expensive band-aid. If I had the power, I would lock the President and all Congressmen in a room and not let them out until they read the comprehensive article “How American Health Care Killed My Father” in the September issue of The Atlantic Monthly. It states, “…the health-care reform now being contemplated will not fix it.” The author is a Democrat who proposes more free market reforms, more personal responsibility, insurance only for catastrophic illness. He makes more sense than any Democratic politician in Washington. Please read this amazing article online and then call your Senator and yell at him. Or better yet, write a polite letter.

Olympia Snowe and other leftists faithf in government is unfounded. Medicare is near bankruptcy. Medicaid is bankrupting the States. The Stimulus Bill did not create any “shovel ready” jobs as promised as proven by the fact unemployment is near 10% and rising. Government run health care on the Indian Reservations is a National tragedy. Government run Veterans run health care is substandard. No one knows whose pocket the TARP funds went into the only thing that is clear is that credit is still frozen for small businesses.
So when I hear Senator Snowe pompous statements about how government will be the savior when it comes to solving health care problems, I want to puke.
The reality is government will make health care worse not better as proven by governments dismal track record. Just name one area where government has ever been sucessful in solving any problem? If Olympia Snowe and the other leftist get their way, health care costs will go up and the quality of care will go down.

Bi-partisian agreement is wrong when it violates the U.S. Constitution and peoples RIGHTS. Health care is a special interest. The people writing this bill are attempting to force people to have health care insurance with specific services and products. An excuse used is that the government must pay for health care of the uninsured. This is false. This is the socialist and communist agenda. The government should not be paying for health care period. These bills are nothing more than a power grab and for special interests in the health care businesses and an effort to create more government run businesses. Those writing these bills are greedy controlling liberals and socialists. I thank every senator and representative opposing these bills.

I think it took true courage for Snowe to take a stand, as the one Republican vote, for health care reform.
I’m also amused that many of the negative comments towards Snowe are full of misspellings, bad punctuation and grammar. This is a great way to shoot your own argument (or lack thereof) in the proverbial foot.

This woman, GUARANTEED, is voting in favor of the final bill. It’s a done deal, and thanks to her, the Dems won’t have to stomach the uphill task of reconcilation. By Snowe’s logic, she votes for a bill in committee that she disagrees with so “the process can move along.” Remember that she is one of three Rino’s, along with Susan Collins and Benedict Arlen Specter, who made it possible for the Stimulus bill to pass … she’s voting for Obamacare. Period. I hope the party brass take her to task over this. Who is running against her in 2010 ???

I wrote to her and Susan a few times starting a year ago. They went their own way. That is when I realized that they are no longer working for us, we are working for them to pay the debt. They do not have the intestinal fortitude to endure a complete investigation of the crime because of their own liabilities, and the ability of Congress to shift, share, and shirk the blame, responsilbility, and of course any subsequent penalties.

There’s no surprise here. Olympia has always been a moderate-liberal Republican. In almost any state other than Maine, she would be a Democrat. But, in the northeast, someone has to run on the Republican ticket (since no one else in that area can think for themselves, and vote Democrat)

I thought she was demanding only two weeks ago the bill should be posted on line for 72 hours so citizens and lawmakers could read it. What happened to that? It was never posted, right? Does she know what she is voting on? Has she read the bill she just voted for? I cannot understand why she thinks a bi-partisan path to socialism where she give a fig leaf of cover to the socialists is better than a Democratic only path to socialism. If the GOP loses her seat because she jumps parties, so be it. At least she will not longer be a stalking horse for Dems but flying under false colors by wearing a Republican label she clearly does not deserve to wear. Poor baby spent so many hours negotiating and that is why she feel obligated to Bauchus? What about being obligated to Republicans in Maine who so foolishly voted for her thinking she was a Republican too, do they not count for anyting? Is she retiring? And therefore does not care about GOP votes in the future?

Just looking upon that dull bovine stare that is pasted to her face is enough to let you know just the kind of deadwood that is cluttering up elected offices across the country. It’s becoming pretty obvious that the ruling class has nothing but contempt for us and will need to be dealt a lesson at the ballot boxes again. Of course that requires an educated public and after years of public school indoctrination and low expectations coupled with the dogma fed to us by the lamestream press, it will be interesting to see if you can wake up that mere 10 to 20 percent of sheeple voters who wait until the last week to decide who to vote for like they were making a choice on a bundt cake down at the grocery store. The CBO report on the Senate Finance Committee Bill is based on a bunch of budget gimmicks. For example, it assumes that the States, which are all in deep financial trouble, can take on even greater unfunded mandates in the form of more Medicaid patients. Senator Reid knows his State Nevada cannot afford the unfunded mandates called for in the bill and has already opted his State out from under them. Other States will follow. Another assumption by the CBO is that enormous cuts, over 500 billion, can be made to Medicare to help pay for another big government program ignoring the fact that Medicare is already near bankrupt. So when people say there are death panels in the bill, that is exactly what will happen to Seniors if the cuts to Medicare are carried out as mandated in the Senate Finance bill. Seniors will be screaming their heads off about these cuts so think again if the government can pull this one off. Then there is the taxes on the so called Cadillac Insurance plans which are mostly negotiated union plans. Unions are already protesting these taxes so guess how long these taxes will stay in the bill?
So there you have it. None of the ways of funding health care reform are actually feasible as they call for higher taxes, unfunded Medicaid mandates that the States can’t afford and enormous cuts to Medicare which Seniors will raise hell about. Any Senator on the Finance Committee voting for this bill (which is full of a bunch of budget gimmicks) should be fired. Come to think of it, even Madoff must be admiring how the good Senators are trying to con the public into thinking the bill will actually reduce the deficit, reduce the cost of health care and increase the quality of care when the exact opposite is true.
The whole Health Care Reform bill is just a scam whose sole purpose is to try and con more tax payer dollars out of the people so the politicians in DC can spend the people’s money on their favorite special interests groups which is not you and me. The back bone of America, the middle class who pay the bulk of the taxes, will be last in line to get any of our own money.
The problem for the people who are sucking the life blood out of America who want something for nothing, the Middle Class will soon get wise to the game and stop being slaves to the State, than there will be no one left to pay for any thing.

She has played her cards too many times. I believe there is a way to support nationalized health care as a Republican. Want we want (as Rebubs) is accountability. If I were running, I would support this bill if it made unrealistic guarantees to tax payers. This is the way to support the bill but contribute to it’s downfall. Glad I’m not in politics and have to be as fake as that.

Obama is our president at least to 2012. If you want him to fail, you want America to fail. That sounds like a traitor to me. Health Care. 43,000+ citizens die for lack of affordable Health Care and Insurance companies dropping them when they get sick. Republican answer: don’t get sick. And if you get sick die quickly. The way you republicans are talking I am beginning to believe it. Remember Bush. He is the one who initiated the Stimulus Package. He was the one who would NOT reform health care. Gawd what a bunch of losers. Glad to be an independent. At least olympia is thinking about her constituents instead of the poor Insurance Companies!

How could anyone in their right mind or with any sense of common decency cut over half a trillion out of Medicare, when it is already near bankrupt, and use the money to fund another big spending government run health care program? The truth is the Democrats and leftists like Snowe, are conning the public when it comes to their true agenda. The leftist true agenda is spelled out by Robert Reich ,President Obama’s economic adviser, when he says the Dems have to lie in order to get health care passed.
See: http://www.verumserum.com/?p=9040 where Reich says the true goal of the Democrats health care reform is to: (1) Deny health care for Seniors, (2) Stop the use of expensive life saving treatments and surgeries to the disabled and terminally ill,(3) Increase the cost of health care for the young and middle class so they can help pay for everyone elses’ health care and (4) cut spending on new innovations in health care as they are too expensive.

Let’s see, the people of Maine elected her, and the rest of the country would love to remove her to Gitmo. I have to wonder if Congress is listening to their constituents or to the left-wing press. Senator, in the spirit of Conan O’Brien – you are forthwith banned from the great state of Texas. You crossed the party, please don’t cross the Red River.

Don’t worry Olympia, you won’t be alone too much longer. Illinois is about to elect a bigger RINO that even you and your current cohort are.
Mark Kirk has been endorsed by Obama’s shoeshine boy, Michael Steele, to be the next RINO in the Senate.
And of course, Illinois voters will see the (R) next to his name and think they are voting AGAINST Obama when
(Karl) Marx Kirk is the biggest Obama worshipper since Neville Chamberlin was playing handmaiden to Hitler…
Come on Republicans, lets start electing REAL Republicans like Dr Eric Wallace (who can’t even get ON the IL primary ballot because of Steele the RNC and the IL Republo-Democrat Party) and not New Age Communists like Kirk, Collins, McCain, Lindsey Graham, Specter and Snowe.

She needs to be voted out of office on Mid-Term Election Day, November 3, 2010. She does not represent the will of the American people, so kick her butt out of office and out of power! ANY CONGRESSMAN OR CONGRESSWOMAN WHO VOTES TO SPEND A TRILLION DOLLARS OF MONEY WE DON’T HAVE NEEDS TO BE KICKED OUT OF OFFICE ON NOVEMBER 3, 2010! OBAMA’S CONGRESS IS BANKRUPTING OUR COUNTRY. Whatever happened to getting rid of the Mexicans? Why do we have immigration laws if our Congress refuses to enforce them? Let’s start bussing the Mexicans back to Mexico – forget putting them up in hotels here! And NO, OUR TAX DOLLARS SHOULD NOT BE BUYING FREE HEALTH CARE FOR ILLEGAL MEXICANS.

See: http://www.verumserum.com/?p=9040 where Reich says the true goal of the Democrats health care reform is to: deny health care for Seniors for the last two years of their lives, Stop the use of expensive life saving treatments and surgeries to the disabled and terminally ill, increase the cost of health care for the young and middle class so they can help pay for everyone elses’ health care and cut spending on new innovations in health care as they are too expensive.

Snowe—-RESIGN THE PARTY and JOIN ARLEN SPHINCTER, as a Dumascrat. Maybe that other weakling Maine woman Senator, Susan Collins, should also become a Democrat—whe is almost worthless.
Let the Republicans run a real conservative, not a traitor and loser, like you.
Maybe Lindsey Graham can join you. He has been seen partying too often with Barney Frank, to remain in a party that MUST become honorable and honest.
Time to CLEAN HOUSE in the Republican party. Olympia….take your bottle of black hair dye, and take Lindsey Graham (with his light loafers), and become OFFICIAL Democrats.

The deficit is at an all time high, unemployment is at almost 10% and rising, the dollar’s value is plummeting and Medicare is about to go bankrupt.
Government run health care in States like Massachusetts are proven failures where costs have gone up and quality of care has gone down. Yet despite this President Obama and the Democrats are hell bent on ramming Health Care Reform down everyone’s throats. Moreover the CBO, the Federal Reserve and the Treasury Dept are predicting that the US is about to face a financial catastrophe. Thus, voting for a big spending government run Health Care is insane. Plus, forcing people to buy health care insurance, severely cutting Medicare and increasing everyone’s taxes to pay for it is freaking unbelievable!!!

Arctic Lion, Snowe is not a “great voice in America” she is a pick pocket who is trying to legally steal money from the hard working people and hand it over to people who have not earned it. The problem with that concept is that once the hard working people figure out they are mere slaves of the State, they will stop working and the gravy train will stop serving gravy. Than gook luck asking your “great voice of America” for a hand out as there will be no one left for her to steal money from.

I applaud Senator Snowe. Instead of politics as usual she stood for what she felt was right. The problem with the Republican party is there is NO MIDDLE GROUND. That’s what’s killing the Republicans. I can tell you this is certainly not the Republican party that Senator Snowe joined in the early 70′s. I am sure the Republicans will go all out to try and have her elected out of office. What they don’t realize is that the people of Maine won’t stand for it. She’ll be in the office until she chooses not to be. Republicans ought to know that by now.

AG Palmer, what you do not realize is that people are tired of all the lies the Democrats and Snowe are using to sell their health care reform plan. First off would you pay for a product five years in advance without any idea of what you are getting for your money? I think not. The costs alone are near a trillion dollars and when people like Snowe say they can increase the number of people being covered while reducing costs even you must realize you are being sold a bill of goods. Moreover, with Medicare going bankrupt, the deficit sky high, unemployment near 10% and the value of the dollar plummeting, the States going bankrupt with Medicaid, you should not be surprised that the people are wondering if leftists in DC like Snowe are all insane.

The 2-party system is the problem as both parties are mirror images of each other. They both have derailed from their Constitutional responsibilities and now just barter for power.
Olympia Snowe has no true beliefs nor anyone else who would blindly forward a bill that is astonishingly convoluted to the point of idiocy. What’s in this bill? Have they posted it online? Will they? You think?

Why not fix the problem by providing insurance for the 18 million who do not have it, instead of scrapping the perfectly good heathcare of 200 million people while setting up the largest bureaucratic nightmare the country will ever see? Most of the current problems in healthcare have happened because the government became involved in it. Proper oversight can keep corruption in check. I don’t want my medicine doled out by the DMV, thank you very much. Bureaucrats are the bane of a free people. When it comes to government, Keep It Simple, s.

I listened to Senator Snowe re: National Healthcare. Her rhetoric was right out of the Democrat party playbook. Blame the big insurance companies, big drug companies, etc. She dismissed a study done by Price Waterhouse, a very reputable firm, for the Insurance industry which concluded that insurance premiums for the middle class would INCREASE $4,000 under the plan as constituted. The Democrats have never understood basic supply and demand. When congress mandates tax increases on insurance companies, those tax increases are passed onto the consumer! If they cannot be passed on, the company goes out of business. Maybe this is the end game of the Democrat party, force insurance companies out of the business of providing health insurance. Then an even more inefficient system can replace it, national health care ala Amtrak and the post office. I can understand “mandating” portability and outlawing denial of coverage for pre-existing conditions. However, surely they realize this would increase the cost of insuring people and must be covered by larger numbers of participants or raising rates or both! There is no free lunch and someone must foot the bill. Ultimately that means the taxpayer and/or the consumer must pay! All else is just smoke and mirrors. Surely expanding the boundaries across which companies can compete and reigning in the trial lawyers could go a long ways toward “bending” the cost curve down. I’m afraid all we are going to get is a government run, inefficient system which rations care for the very young and the very old. As for Olympia Snow, why doesn’t she just change parties and be over it. At least then we would all know who the players are! I find it interesting also that the main stream media ALWAYS gives lots of air time the those republicans that are really democrats.

Your name is ironic as you actually espouse economic enslavement by the government. There will always be poor people in the world. It is a fact of life. A free people have the choice to help them or not. Americans are the most generous people on the planet, and this before their government takes from them to do its bidding. To FORCE people to subsidize others at gunpoint is immoral. Better to teach a hungry man to fish than to give him a fish and leave him hungry later.

God help us. This bill does NOT:
1. Lower insurance rates
2. Lower health care costs
3. Improve health care delivery
4. Insure 1/2 of those uninsured today
The ONLY things it does is:
1. Raise taxes
2. Penalize good employers who provide good benefits
3. Dump billions of people into an already failing Medicare system
4. Creates an unfunded mandate on states’ Medicaid systems
5. Begins running IN THE RED after 2019.
6. Cuts seniors’ Medicare benefits
What the hell is wrong with you, Olympia Snowe?

If the bottom feeders want a better life why don’t they go out and earn it like all the rest of us. Congress can go to hell!! The leeches can drop dead. Tell Obama and all his misfit stooges to take all the deadbeats and go back to Kenya were they came from in the first place, maybe they will revert back to eating each other. She was USED and ABUSED by Obama tonight. Treated here like a stripper representing the republicans doing a little dance for the dems. To top it all off her state already has “universal” health care of whatever you like to call it… and it’s a failure. So she now thinks we should try it a a nation? She is PSYCHO! The media long ago began its trickery of us. For years they have gleefully classified ULTRA LEFT LIBERAL politicians as “Moderates”. Unfortunately, the RNC allowed that for whatever their immediate needs back then because it enabled them to at least be on a near equal footing with the Dems who were powerful at the time. Thus, the GOP kept the likes of Snowe, Susan Collins, Arlen Spector, et al, even though they voted with the Dems on MANY strong leftist agenda bills. In hindsight the RNC should have backed Conservative types each time one of these quislings came up for reelection. In the long run it would have made the GOP a much stronger party. Unfortunately they were shortsighted and now look at its ranks. In my own district in NJ we have a first GOP representative named Leonard Lance. I began following his votes and have been sickened. Hell, he voted for Cap n Trade among his many votes that sided with the opposition. THE GOP SHOULD BACK COMPETING CANDIDATES TO THESE PEOPLE each time its determine their conservative rating is under 90%.

Sen Snowe is a pathetic liar. She speaks out of both sides of her mouth when she says she doesn’t like what’s in the Bill but wants it to move forward. she is a complete sell out of her Party, Constituents and principles. She will never get voted into office again whether she tries to run as a Republican or defects to the Democratic Party. I know she might think on diferent terms than the simple American citizen, but that is still a heap of money, and she is trying to waste it by usuing it to drive America into government dependent socialism. Thank you Senator

Any Republican who votes for this kind of immoral, unconstitutional, fiscally irresponsible, and ineffective government intrusion into health care needs to be disciplined by the party and the voters.
She needs to be removed from the Senate Finance Committee.
She needs to be defeated in the next primary by a Republican who understands that the purpose of government is to protect individual rights, not violate them.

The Obama camp claims there are no death panels and no push to deny medical care to seniors in order for them to die off quicker, but yet every health care plan including this one drastically cuts spending for Medicare in a society that is aging. If nothing else, Medicare would need even more money not less. So this tells me that there will be death panels and there will be end of life counseling that encourages those on Medicare to give up trying to live. I’m just too sorry. I would never chose my own health over that of my parents. I have too much respect for them, apparently something Obama and his ilk, including Ms. Snowe, knows nothing about.

If I were from Maine I would truly be embarrassed.

They keep electing they same bunch of sorry no count, lying crooks and traitors every election. This is why I am no longer a member of the RNC. I will never donate as long as they support people like Snowe. The government was not meant to “run” things that are private. What happened to “the only thing the government is good at is creating red tape”. I remember that anything the government touched was a financial nightmare. It wasn’t that long ago….I believe it was during the election of 2004. Social Security & Medicare are failing!!! The senior Rx program that Bush started has already cost 3 TIMES the amount that was predicted. WAKE UP PEOPLE!! Take responsibility for your own welfare.

Wow…. maybe she just wanted to get attention.
Posted by: linda | October 14, 2009, 9:04 am 9:04 am
It makes me sick to think our politicians are taking bribes. An investigation needs to be done, if she took a bribe then she and the people bribing her need to be thrown out of office. Corruption is unacceptable.

Yoo Hoo!
Olympia, Sweetheart!
That darlin’ Arlen is waiting for you just across the isle. See him there with John Kerry and Chris Dodd and Chuck Schumer? Go to him now sweetie. I don’t think you are loved or cared for anymore over here on the right.

GOP should cut off all funding for this turncoat!

She is a liberal moron, and the people that voted for her are likewise morons.

Well now Olympia, you have shown your true colors. We need to follow the money and see what Miss Snowe, or her State got from TARP.

To Mr. Mike
Sir–In the United States of America people are allowed to have a difference of opinion, and having a different opinion than yours, does not mean they need therapy.
Mike, the next time you offer a comment, respond to the issue, instead of trying to be insulting to others.

Stop hammering Snowe. She got this thing out of commitee so it can die a proper death. I congradulate her on making that move. The rest of you are just making unnecessary noise. she will not support the final version after the DEMS add thier liberal spin to it.

She’s really hideous… oh and and a turncoat.
Posted by: JWS | October 14, 2009, 9:10 am 9:10 am
She did the Republicans and the country a favor by getting it out of committee. It is destined to die a proper death now.
Posted by: Ricko | October 14, 2009, 9:11 am 9:11 am
Ricko… have you seen her voting history? She knows her time as a Republican is up and she’s making her move to the dem’s. For all our sakes, I hope you’re right though.

nothings new. I,m just not sure why the people of Maine keep re-electing her!

We get what we desire. We continue to elect people of this ilk

We will remember those that voted to bankrupt this country. Those who ignored the voice of the people will feel our wrath. I can only hope that they will be dragged before the courts some day.
Where has all of the bail out money gone? These fools have no clue. They don’t even read the bills. Billions lost and thrown away.
Posted by: Paul | October 14, 2009, 9:15 am 9:15 am
Dishonest people like her are elected because our “Free Press” has turned into a modern day Tokyo Rose.

An example of a imprudent, impotent, foolish and faceless democrat.
Posted by: Lou | October 14, 2009, 9:16 am 9:16 am
She’s a big idiot. She didn’t like the bill but she voted for it because it was ‘historical’?
Wonderful reason to sell out your countrymen, stupid.
Republican in Name Only. I’ll certainly remember to campaign against her next time. Not because i WANT to but because its historical.
Our politicians are ALL creeps.
Posted by: Vinceman | October 14, 2009, 9:17 am 9:17 am
I have already donated $1000 to the campaign to defeat Olympia Snowe. I will now increase my contribution to defeat her to the max allowed. Being from North Carolina, I am curious how people from all over the country financing the fight against an anti-American candidate will change the dynamic. She was forewarned that the physicians of America would unite against this health care debacle.

Practice term limits-never vote for an incumbent.
Posted by: daddio | October 14, 2009, 9:22 am 9:22 am
It’s not surprising. It is probably to appease her voters come re-election time (whenever that is). People from the northeast are liberal. If you’re a republican living up there, you’d better be moderate to liberal yourself or you’re on the chopping block.

For God’s sake Maine, please, please vote this woman out of office! We are begging you!
Posted by: Dgleon | October 14, 2009, 9:24 am 9:24 am
These people are in for a HUGE wake up call come 2010. We need to vote all these traitors out! They KNOW the majority of the population DO NOT want this and they keep trying to cram it down our throats! When is ENOUGH ENOUGH?!?!? These people, Dems, Repubs, all of them that think they are no longer accountable to the PEOPLE have to GO!!!! I am FED UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Once again the All Barak Channel [ABC] gets an ‘exclusive’ interview. Why bother pretending this is news at all? Main Stream Media will push and push and push until the resounding propaganda of Dear Leader Barry is all our children and legislators hear. Come to thin of it, is there much of a difference in the thought processes of children and members of congress???
Bye, bye Olympia. Why not take a cue and join Specter in his open desertion?
Posted by: Ron | October 14, 2009, 9:26 am 9:26 am
Right on Daddio. You would think the people of Michigan would have learned that by now. We still have Granholm (still blown away), Levin & Stabenow. Detroit only gave up Kilpatrick because of legal action. The unemployment is SKYROCKETING here. Yet they still vote them in. I need to move.

This is a political vote to move the debate forward… The real healthcare debates haven’t even begun, that’ll start during reconcilliation… While I don’t agree with her vote, I understand her reasoning. All she voted on was to allow the bill to go to the full senate to be debated as opposed to the back door stuff that’s been goin on in the past few months. When the time comes she’ll prob vote down whatever final bill comes out because in the end taxes are going to go up, medical service will decrease, and job growth in the private sector will continue to lag…., at least ur votes count, I’m a Repub in NY

Does anybody want to talk about the puppet Charlie Gibson? “What do you know that your fellow Republicans don’t?” Give me a break. How the hell do you call that reporting? At least we know where Mr. Insignificant stands. Charlie – you’ll never be able to hide your contempt for the right and you are disgracing Jennings’ memory. You should be ashamed. And they call FOX biased?

Whoever said she is hot better get to the eye doctor fast. She is just a female Spector and just as bad looking. Get out of the republican party and go kiss Obama’s butt more.

Boy, what a genius Max Baucus (D) Minn. thinks he is in his own mind, by deciding to “stick-it” to the young and healthy who would refuse to buy this crap insurance; so his cronies can take the “money from those healthy, and give it to the sick”; you know, like “taking from the rich, to give to the poor”. This is what today’s politicians call helping us. And, it is only when the unions, insurance, and health-care agencies cry foul do they care to listen. ARROGANCE!!!

An act of real courage, Sen. Snowe. Well done.
To the right-wing purists above who suggests she leave the GOP …. I can’t agree more. We’d be happy to have Sen. Snowe on the Democratic side and further marginalize the Republicant party.
Even better, she could actually work on solutions to challenges the country faces, instead of just voting “no” on anything Obama supports (like the rest of her knee-jerk caucus). I’m sure she’d also like not to have to answer to rush limbaugh.
Come on over, Sen. Snowe.
Posted by: ComeOnOver | October 14, 2009, 9:40 am 9:40 am
Snow admits her concerns on legislating on fast-track and the dire shortcomings of the bill, but pushes the bill along despite her concerns. Snow left the sordid task to work on the significant issues to her Republican colleagues and Democrats. oh what a tangled web we weave..

We’re all “Mad as Hell”. However, the real problems these so-called representatives are ignoring due to deliberate distraction by the “one’s” demand for Health Care reform are as follows.
1. THE ECONOMY-NO JOBS,NO TAX REVENUE
2. THE FAILING DOLLAR-INFLATION
3. ROGUE NATIONS PLAYING WITH NUCLEAR
WEAPONS.
4. THE WARS
That’s for starters. Fiscal responsibility in Washington is dead. It is amazing to me that the majority of the people do not want this type of health reform yet Washington is playing deaf and dumb e.g.Snowe. There’s isn’t an iota of common sense in wasting time on this “Reform/Taxation” when we have such overwhelming issues that are a priority.
As a nation we are experiencing the worst “Terrorist attack” in history, the attack on the financial security of the United States. O and his minions are aiding and abetting.
To all those who think the government has an obligation to take from the rich and give to the poor I pose this question.
Who do you think will have any level of wealth left when this administration is finished ruining the country?
We’re not simply angry about this vote. We’re “MAD AS HELL” about all of the above.
Snowe is just one of today’s contributions to our downfall and her mediocrity is a great target. She is but a *)&* in the wind.
Continue to vent people. I don’t know about you but it makes me feel a little better, at least, momentarily.

I stopped watching Charlie Gibson for a while after his condendscending interview with Palin, but I was drawn back to watching World News Tonight news until yesterday when he said, on the afternoon radio news, that the health bill came out of committee with a “bipartisan” vote.
WHAT? Because ONE republican voted in favor of the bill, it was bipartisan? What misuse of “reporting.” I used to think that Charlie Gibson would report the news, but apparently he needs to exercise his commentary nature like all the other left-winged “journalists.”

Snowe has been brave enough to decide what she thinks is in the interest of the American people – regardless of party boundaries. Snowe is a heroine.

The “public option” is not in the bill that passed the committee as I understand it. HOWEVER, Sen Collins, of the No. East has just announced that she is open to the plan. So of the No.East “republicans” we have the Good Fairy and the Bad Fairy..sorta good cop bad cop idea. Either way, they can change hats from time to time, and still keep their far-left credentials. Sneaky…but clever!!!

Look, I’m a conservative, but let’s look at Snowe’s role in this. As of right now, she is the only one publically making sure this discussion is continuing. Second, she’ll be reelected no matter what. She has huge support from her constituents. In the 2006 Senate race, she won with 74% of the vote. All this chatter about her being a fake Republican and she is going to lose in her next contest, is simply garbage. She will win, and now she has a huge influence in the passing of any form of health care. She has stalled the process, which I commend her for, and seems to be honestly fighting to make the much needed healthcare reform possible. If we want to look at problems in this debate, let’s look at Baucus and his donations from special interests. Olympia Snowe is the best thing the Republicans have going for them to get any of their own measures right now in this process. Her voice is being heard, watched, and is key to either party’s political strategy. Otherwise, they are just being dismissed as continuing their “party of no” stigma, which won’t win them seats in 2010 or 2012. Let’s wake up, conservatives and Republicans. Our country needs us to be sensible, and not fear mongering, judgmental individuals.

I live in Maine. I voted for Bill Cohen too. Another fine Republican Senator from Maine.
Olympia does us proud. She is about the people, and not the party.
More of our politicians should be about principles and not party ideologues.
If we had more like her, we would all be better off.
The fact that so many of you are expressing hateful and spiteful things about her shows your lack of class, and the problem with this nation.
Having a great society is not about how hateful you can be, it is about how well you can get along even when you disagree.
Think about it.
