French Vogue Blackface Photos Cause Racism Uproar
ABC's Kelly Belknap reports from London:
This month’s edition of French Vogue has stepped into even edgier territory and sparked international outrage. The fashion bible is accused of racism after using pictures of a white model ‘blacked up’ for the photo spread.
Dutch model Lara Stone is shown in the fashion magazine painted head to toe in dark make-up. Fuelling the controversy the photos appear alongside the same model in her own pale-white skin.
Since the pictures surfaced on the internet they have been received with outrage. The lifestyle website Jezebel condemned the 14 page photo shoot styled by editor-and-chief Carine Roitfeld and shot by photographer Steven Klein as insensitive. "What Klein and Roitfeld should know … is that painting white people black for the entertainment of other white people is offensive in ways that stand entirely apart from cultural context," Jezebel said.
According to the Daily Mail, French anti-racism group SOS Racism also condemned the photo-spread spread. “If the aim was artistic, and not to pass off the model as a black girl, the fact that it produces such reactions shows that the world of images is now paying for its long tradition of not allowing black people to show their bodies in public,” said the organization’s president Dominique Sopo to the Daily Mail.
The magazine’s text does not give any reasoning for photographing Stone in blackface. French Vogue told the Daily Mail “it was unaware it had caused offence, but said it could not give any further comment.”
This is the second blackface controversy in recent weeks. On Australian TV talent show Hey Hey Its Saturday an act insulted audiences after painting their faces black and wore afro wigs to imitate the Jackson Five.
Harry Connick Jr, a guest judge on the show, was appalled by the bizarre ode to Michael Jackson.
“If I knew that was going to be part of the show I definitely wouldn’t have done it,” Connick said on air after awarding the performers a zero score.
He added, “I just want to say, on behalf of my country, I know it was done humorously, but we’ve spent so much time trying to not make black people look like buffoons, that when we see something like that we take it really to heart.”

Is it really offensive or is it that people just want to be offended?

Harry Connick Jr never mentioned the fact that he appears in black face on an SNL episode.

Kind of silly to show a white model in black face when so few black models are featured in the magazine. These folks are so out of touch with the real world.

Julie W…you need to get out more. I see black models in magazines all the time.

Ted, really, you’re an avid reader of French vogue? The few successful Black high fashion models continue to speak out about the lack of opportunity in the industry. Naomi Campbell said that the reason she hasn’t retired yet is the dearth of high fashion Black models. You need to educate yourself.

Julie W….Since I live in Europe, Luxembourg to be spicific, I am very familiar with French Vogue. And there are plenty of black models. They are not suffering as you claims. However, I have noticed that there are not enough Asian models.

When will the world get over this black thing. Sheesh it’s a skin color and we all bleed the same color of blood.Blacks in america are americans not black african americans because they didn’t come from africa unless they have traveled to live here, then they can proclaim they are actually black africans.Their ancestors are the true africans, whom many wounded up her not by choice.I don’t care what race you are if you live in america, your american along with your race, but that doesn’t mean your a vietnames american or a mexican american, your just american with a race. If that doesn’t make sense to some of you then you need to learn to be an american and not worrying about what your darned skin color is.But be proud of who your are ethnic wise as an american ok.
I’m an american indian, but i don’t go around saying that i’m indian i say i’m american first then Human, then Indian. Ok so let the argument begin lol.

since the french did not practice slavery for several hundred years, did not have jim crow laws and did not invent the vaudville acts that were performed in black face, they have nothing to feel guilt or shame about. i see black entertainers in white face all of the time. it just makes me think how ugly american society is and how we all really dislike each other regardless of the rhetoric that we produce for foreign audiences. the japanese have a portion of their population that are reggae and rasta followers and they grow dreads and die their skin dark brown. i see no offense in this and think its funny. just because america has its dirty guilt complexes from its inhuman behavior, thank god america does not rule the world.

I must have missed all the complaints about racism when Eddie Murphy and the Wayans brothers dressed up in white face.

This would not be nearly as big of an offense if France did not experience racial riots from people of African descent only a few years ago. There are plenty of black models in the world but they failed to want to hire any of them. This is a matter of racial insensitivity and fairness.

This uproar is ridiculus!!! There is nothing offensive about a decorated model. How is this any different that Japanese theatre with painted white faces? anyone offended about that? NO! Grow up world.

Sickening how Americans are so hung up on blackness, and don’t regard her wearing Japanese make-up as equally racist. Get over ourselves. THe whole world is not America.
