Rush Limbaugh Thrown For A Loss
ABC's Stu Schutzman reports from New York: It’s third and long for Rush Limbaugh. Since the controversial conservative talk show host first floated the notion that he may be part of a group interested in owning the St Louis Rams, a firestorm of criticism has come his way. A number of racial remarks have been attributed to Limbaugh over the years, some of which he denies. In one, cited on his website by USAToday, he compares black NFL players to gang members. “The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and Crips without any weapons. There I said it.” In 2003, working for ESPN, Limbaugh opined that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated yet propped up by the media because he was black. Black players, who comprise two thirds of the league, have been urged by their union to speak out against Limbaugh. A few have already said they would refuse to play for a team with him at the top. “The NFL should pass on Rush,” says Detroit Free Press columnist Drew sharp, “The league cannot be that hamstrung in finding deep-pocketed financiers that it’s left with no alternative but embracing someone whose occupational practice is making people feel more comfortable within their own prejudices.” NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was quick to agree. “We are all held to a higher standard here,” said Goodell. “I would not want to see those kind of comments from people who are in a responsible position within the NFL. No, Absolutely not.” The NFL’s 32 owners, an elite fraternity of millionaires and billionaires, get to decide who can join their club. 24 of them must vote to approve the sale. Atlanta Falcons boss Arthur Blank believes Limbaugh is one leopard who won’t change his spots. It’s “highly unlikely,” says Blank. Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay (the same owner who stole his team out of Baltimore in the middle of the night) has already stated publicly he would deny Rush the “privilege” of NFL ownership. “I would not be in favor of voting for him,” says Irsay. “Sometimes,” he continues, “when there are comments made that are inappropriate, incendiary, insensitive….it’s bigger than football.” Whatever their motives; true conviction, political correctness or just good business — the owners are unlikely to punt on this one. It doesn’t look good for team Rush.

Funny how we seem to dismiss the
racist comments by Jessie Jackson
and Al Sharpton. We can let
and not necessarily like the comments
by certain people but it should not
keep them from being part of business
and politics. I think Robert Byrd was
a member of the KKK and now is held in
high esteem in our government. If you
are a liberal you can get away with
anything but if you are conservative
be prepared to burn at the stake.
Really ridiculous.

Rush is a great American, he loves the game, our country and people of all races. Listen to his show for about a week and find out who he is, not what the media says he is. I have been a football fan for years, he would be a great owner!

So wait, Keith Olbermann, who says Fox News is more dangerous to America than Al Qaeda, is allowed to be a commentator, but Limbaugh, who will not be appearing daily on TV in his capacity as an NFL owner, isn’t allowed to own a team? Ridiculous! This is America, let people do what they want. Hell, the NFL will probably make a killing if Rush blasts it and players all the time through their anti-First Amendment, draconian censorship-style system of letting the Commissioner hold sole authority to fine dissent.

I think he needs to buy a dogfighting team. Vick could coach. Charlie Rangel could be the business manager.

Rush will never own a team, nor do I think he really wants to. This is just his way of getting his name out in the spotlight again, especially since his orbit has been eclipsed by fellow right-wingers such as Glen Beck and Michael Savage.
Just for the record, Jim Irsay was not the owner who moved the Colts from Baltimore (and out of one of the worst stadiums in the NFL) … it was his father who made that move. That of course, lead to Baltimore getting the Cleveland Browns (and out of one of the worst stadiums in the NFL).
Posted by: Gus | October 14, 2009, 12:48 pm 12:48 pm
Fat junkies have as much right to buy a sports team as anyone else.
While I’m no Limbaugh fan, I find it rich that the many sleazy current NFL owners (such as the coward Irsay) are taking the moral high ground when they don’t have a leg to stand on. Limbaugh is no worse than them.

The NFL and The Owners are hypocrites ! They are OK with there being a TEAM whose name degrades Native Americans but they show disdain for the comments of Limbaugh ? Why not be fair and do something about both issues !

Isn’t Vick playing again?
So, he couldn’t be the coach.
Maybe they could get Barney Frank as the coach, or Reid, or Pelosi, or Bill Clinton. They’ll be looking for jobs when it’s all said and done.
That Snowe lady could be the coach.
She might be looking for a job soon I hear.

It is awesome for Rush that he has that much money to throw around!
Looks like people can’t stand the fact that Rush is indeed wealthy.
I don’t care for the guy, but he does have the right to look around for a team if he wants to. The teams can say no if they want to . It’s still America, right?

It is too bad that this has to be made a racial issue. It is an economic issue. If and when the owners vote, their main concern will be: Will it make money for them.
I agree with Gus above. Rush Limbaugh is probably not seriously wanting to be an owner. He is simply stoking his base. He readily admits to doing that. He is an entertainer….and a very successful one.

How about focusing on something seriously?
The CEO’s of some banks are about to get l40 Billion dollars in bonus money.
They should be paying their debt (bail-out loans), but instead they get richer by the minute.
Anybody care to comment on this?
Or would you rather focus on Rush some more? Nobody is going to sell him a team, so settle down. Rush already knew that; he’s just stirring the pot again and you are falling for it – again.
Focus on things that matter:
Campaign Contribution Reform;
Banking and Auto Industries repaying their debts;
Health Care Reform (one that we can all afford)

Charlie should be ashamed of himself. Limbaugh has denied having made racial comments. Further, he has challenged all sources guilty of repeating rumors as fact to either produce evidence, or on-air or in-print retractions. Frankly, I hope that Limbaugh sues every responsible perpetrator for slander with penalties high enough to substantially hurt and remind ‘journalists’ that they have an obligation to substantiate what they choose to repeat. I wish the same for all personalities smeared by false reports and shoddy journalism…yellow journalism…regardless of political persuasion.

wis134 seems to have a case of selective memory. It’s the one thing that is truly bipartisan in American politics.
Jesse Jackson’s biggest racial controversy involved using the term “Hymietown” to describe New York during a Presidential primary. That one comment flushed away any chances he might have had at gaining the nomination. And it’s followed him to this day. No one with a memory longer than the tip end of…well, you know…would even bother to claim that Jackson hasn’t paid a price for his racially charged statements.
Al Sharpton’s long since marginalized himself by leeching on to every conceivable race-based controversy in NYC and beyond for the past twenty years or more. He is no longer taken seriously outside of his home base, and is nowhere near what you could call a “power broker”, either in the Democratic Party, or in American politics. Sharpton is now irrelevant to the national debate – perhaps the worst penalty for controversial statements and positions. (For conservative examples of this phenomenon, see: Bachmann, Michele L.; Palin, Sarah H.; Santorum, Richard L.)
Rush Limbaugh should not be an NFL owner. This ain’t the NHL, folks. The league is in excellent financial health, and revenues go up every year. The last thing it needs is for Limbaugh to go on his radio show, blathering about how Steven Jackson looks like a drugged-out Rastafarian and how he should cut his hair “to be more respectable…like Kyle Boller!”
NOTE FOR THE LEARNING-IMPAIRED: No one is suggesting that Limbaugh be dropped from the Checketts bid. What the NFLPA and other people are doing is trying to pressure the owners into rendering a Limbaugh-backed bid DOA. That is those parties’ right – every bit as much as it is Limbaugh’s right to bid on the team.
Even if you agree with Limbaugh’s views (which is difficult if you have more than two synapses functioning simultaneously…but I digress), it’s a business blunder of billion-dollar proportions to let someone as radioactive as Limbaugh into the owners’ fraternity. Imagine Marge Schott with her own megaphone and ambition, and blend in a 24-hour news cycle that is constantly starved for anything quotable. The resulting sulfurous smell is what Rush Limbaugh, NFL owner, would bring to his team and the league.
The Rams suck badly enough on their own. They certainly don’t need Limbaugh’s assistance in that regard.

Mr. Limbaugh is his own worst enemy, particularly his “loose cannon” mouth. His vile, vulgar, despicable comments – both anti-American and un-American, should have no place in civilized society.

“apothegm1 the definition of slander is to say things detrimental about someone that you know to be untrue. In light of that you may want to rethink your suggestion that Rush sue everybody! The pompous windbag who seems to be your hero would end up broke! Probably trigger a relapse.”
Well, Tom, the key words being ‘detrimental’ and ‘untrue’ in defining slander, truth is a funny thing, having little to do with popularity or anything else for that matter. So your ‘hero’ comment is lacking in substance. In this case, the accused has publicly denied the accusation and charged accusers to either put up their evidence, or provide public retraction…which seems generous given that the smears have been many and very public with no facts being presented or verified. Now, to me, it makes no difference whether the object of the smear is Limbaugh or Obama, there must be some standard of accountability where those making false statements must be forced to make a serious effort to repair the damage done…attempt to make the injured whole. That is a principle of law. Unfortunately, in the case of public slander, the victim can never be made whole. Once uttered, the lie/s can never be erased from memory and thus the stigma remains forever. If you are of a permissive mind that allows such treatment of those with whom you disagree, then, my friend, you have missed the whole point of Americanism where the ideal of mutual respect for the rights and personhood of all is seasoned with the salt of disagreeing agreeably. To lie about another in such a way as to bring harm upon their person or their reputation comes from the same place as murder.

I hope that Rush takes this controversy to the next level and sues the Bast*ards. He owes the American Public a complete airing of the real reasons behind this outcry – and racism is not it.
Listening to Rush is an every now and then thing for me but I like him out there – I like him speaking his mind and giving his opinions. I have never heard him say anything racist and, based on the reports from people that actually research this stuff no one else has either.
So let’s ramp it up and make this public – I want these talking heads to be taken to task and prove that Rush has said racists comments. I want to see them – I want CNN and MSNBC to pony up and make their case. This Congresswoman Jackson – same thing – get your facts and let’s go write them on the board for all to see and decide.
Sharpton, Jesse Jackson need to be brought to task as well.
Rush is a smart guy and will do what is best for him – I hope it is to make this a public debate that we can all see. I am sick and tired of the left doing this kind of thing and not being called to task to make their case. It is all emotive nonsense because they disagree with Rush and this is their way of punishing him.
Our liberties are on trial here and I hope that Rush pursues this. Rush has been chastised here because of speech and this is exactly what our forefathers guaranteed to protect.
Regardless – I am done with the NFL.

What’s amazingly funny is the number of fools who actually believe that Rush is a racist … these people obviously only listen to the media’s portions of what he said and reprint them totally out of context. The joke is actually on you. He is funny and yes, he is sarcastic – that’s part of his humor. But anyone who listens to him knows that he is not a racist – quite the opposite actually. He mocks racism because he doesn’t support it. I listen to him daily – and I’d never associate with anyone who was racist, I think racists come in all colors and sizes and they are all pathetic. After listening to one of his shows (the whole show), I read some articles that took a sentence or two from a mockery and make it sound like that was his personal feelings about it. I was floored! I then realized why so many people think that he is a racist. How could you not … if those statements taken out of context is all you listen to? To have an intelligent opinion about something, you have to check out whether something is true first. Everyone knows that the media tends to twist and turn things out of context to get people riled up – that’s the nature of their business. Where Rush is concerned, the media is actually using and manipulating people to turn against him because he has opposing political views. People who have no substance to what they have to say (the media, Sharpton, Jackson) must lie and play dirty in order to TRICK people into believing them. Of course if you don’t have the wherewithal to look into an allegation for the truth before casting judgment, there is little hope for you. If you are foaming at the mouth right about now, thank you for the entertainment … it is so exciting to see how many more naïve people the media are going to create.
Posted by: Legalette | October 15, 2009, 12:16 pm 12:16 pm
Hypocrisy, thy name is Legalette.
You, sadly, are attempting to defend Limbaugh while simultaneously castigating Sharpton and Jackson. The simple truth is that all three are publicity-seeking gasbags. They just play to different audiences.
Having said that…Jackson and Sharpton have been involved in racial issues in the United States for over 30 years apiece. Jesse Jackson was considered one of the most influential people in the country in the early 1980s – way before Limbaugh was even beginning to form the pimple on the arse of humanity that he’s become. Sharpton’s done a lot of good in NYC to go along with his blather, too. An example: he’s helped focus attention on police profiling and other hazardous practices (Google “Amadou Diallo” and “Sean Bell” for some interesting learning material).
You might not like what Jackson and Sharpton have to say, and that is certainly your right. But to say that they have NO substance behind their views – when there is a raft of easily accessible public information on two careers’ worth of contributions to the public debate – is to demonstrate a dangerous myopia that is, unfortunately, all too common among dittoheads.
You claim, “I would never associate with any racist.” Unfortunately, as Joe Wilson might say, “You lie!” If Limbaugh is not an overt racist, he is certainly every bit the race-baiter. That, in many ways, is even worse, for a race-baiter doesn’t actually believe the drivel, but only stirs the pot on those issues for personal gain (usually pecuniary in nature).
The man is radioactive for a reason. It’s why he wound up on talk radio – he couldn’t hold a mainstream gig to save his life. He has no filter, which means he can’t help but offend people. (To be fair, most modern-day Neanderthals suffer from the same malady.) Every penny of his income is from right-wingers. He has no mainstream appeal, which is precisely why the NFL wants nothing to do with him. It’s also why Republican leadership keeps him at arm’s length. He plays to the “28-percenter” crowd. And that he does very, very well.
Unfortunately, what he does very, very well will keep him from being part of a league where two-thirds of the players are of an ethnic origin that he makes a living disparaging. Commissioner Goodell and owners like Jim Irsay (who, to correct the original story, did NOT move the Colts from Baltimore to Indianapolis – that was his father, Bob) should be commended for taking the sensible business stand and the virtuous moral stand against letting in a plague like Limbaugh.

As long as we’re talking criminal NFL players, why shouldn’t Pete Rose cross over to Football from baseball and be the coach? He got in deep trouble for betting. I’m sure there are many others, some people just don’t want to fallow rules.

As usual, Rush is taken out of context, and mis-characterized so the Author can write this yellow journalism piece.
