The Senate Finance Committee has approved a bill to reform the nation’s health care. One Republican has joined the 13 Democrats voting yes. That one, breaking with her party, is Olympia Snow of Maine. Snow had this to say: “Is this bill all that I would want? Far from it. Is it all that it can be? No. But when history calls, history calls. And I happen to think that the consequences of inaction dictate the urgency of Congress to take every opportunity to demonstrate its capacity to solve the monumental issues of our time.”
Next stop is the Senate floor where the legislative wrestling will begin anew. Today’s is a significant step, but just one step in a longer process that is yet to play out.
