Child Safety: Crib Recall and Other Recently Recalled Kids Products
Late today, government safety officials announced the biggest crib recall in U.S. history — more than two million cribs made by the Stork Craft company. The Consumer Product Safety Commission says it involves some popular cribs with a feature that's designed for convenience – a drop-side. Below is the latest from the Government with details about the crib.
As ABC's Lisa Stark reported tonight that it's the latest in a growing list of baby products with safety problems. There is a good site that tracks all the recent recalls. Click HERE to go to the site.
Here is the release from the CPSC on today's crib recall:
WASHINGTON, DC — Infant Entrapment and Suffocation Prompts Stork Craft to Recall More Than 2.1 Million Drop-Side Cribs
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc., of British Columbia, Canada, today announced the voluntary recall of more than 2.1 million Stork Craft drop-side cribs, including about 147,000 Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. The recall involves approximately 1,213,000 units distributed in the United States and 968,000 units distributed in Canada.
CPSC urges parents and caregivers to immediately stop using the recalled cribs, wait for the free repair kit, and do not attempt to fix the cribs without the kit. They should find an alternative, safe sleeping environment for their baby. Consumers should contact Stork Craft to receive a free repair kit that converts the drop-side on these cribs to a fixed side.
The cribs' drop-side plastic hardware can break, deform, or parts can become missing. In addition, the drop-side can be installed upside-down, which can result in broken or disengaged plastic parts. All of these problems can cause the drop-side to detach in one or more corners. When the drop-side detaches, it creates space between the drop-side and the crib mattress. The bodies of infants and toddlers can become entrapped in the space which can lead to suffocation. Complete detachment of drop-sides can lead to falls from the crib.
CPSC, Health Canada, and Stork Craft are aware of 110 incidents of drop-side detachment; 67 incidents occurred in the United States and 43 in Canada. The incidents include 15 entrapments; 12 in the U.S. and three in Canada. Four of the entrapments resulted in suffocation: a 7-month-old in Gouverneur, N.Y.; a 7-month-old in New Iberia, La.; a 6-month-old in Summersville, W.Va.; and a 9-month-old in Bronx, N.Y. Included in these incidents are 20 falls from cribs; 12 in the U.S. and eight in Canada. Fall injuries ranged from concussion to bumps and bruises. The cribs involved in these incidents had plastic drop-side hardware that had broken, missing, or deformed claws, connectors, tracks, or flexible tab stops; loose or missing metal spring clips; stripped screws; and/or drop-sides installed upside-down.
This recall involves Stork Craft drop-side cribs and Stork Craft drop-side cribs with the Fisher-Price logo. This recall does not involve any cribs that do not have a drop-side. This recall does not involve any cribs with metal rod drop-side hardware. It involves only those cribs with plastic trigger and one-hand-system drop-side hardware.
This recall includes Stork Craft cribs with manufacturing and distribution dates between January 1993 and October 2009. This recall also includes Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo that have manufacturing dates between October 1997 and December 2004. The Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were first sold in the U.S. in July 1998 and in Canada in September 1998. The cribs were sold in various styles and finishes. The manufacture date, model number, crib name, country of origin, and the firm's name, address, and contact information are located on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board. The firm's insignia "storkcraft baby" or "storkling" is inscribed on the drop-side teething rail of some cribs. In Stork Craft cribs that contain the "Fisher-Price" logo, this logo can be found on the crib's teething rail, in the manufacturer's instructions, on the assembly instruction sheet attached to the mattress support board, and on the end panels of the Twinkle-Twinkle and Crystal crib models.
Major retailers in the United States and Canada sold the recalled cribs including BJ's Wholesale Club, J.C. Penney, Kmart, Meijer, Sears, USA Baby, and Wal-Mart stores and online at Amazon.com, Babiesrus.com, Costco.com, Target.com, and Walmart.com from January 1993 through October 2009 for between $100 and $400.
The cribs were manufactured in Canada, China and Indonesia.
For additional information, contact Stork Craft toll-free at (877) 274-0277 anytime to order the free repair kit, or log on to www.storkcraft.com.
Important Message from CPSC:
CPSC would like to remind parents not to use any crib with missing, broken, or loose parts. Make sure to tighten hardware from time to time to keep the crib sturdy. When using a drop-side crib, parents should check to make sure the drop-side or any other moving part operates smoothly. Always check all sides and corners of the crib for disengagement. Any disengagement can create a gap and entrap a child. In addition, do not try to repair any side of the crib, especially with tape, wire or rope.

I am dreading having to deal with all of this. I have read horrible things about this company dealing with their recalls. One person I spoke to actually threw her crib away and got a brand new one because she could never get a hold of anybody even after months of trying and months of her child sleeping in a playpen!

Yes I am beginning to think that this will be a nightmare. I have been trying to log onto their website for half an hour. They should refund everyone’s money, so we can go buy a crib that we can feel safe placing our children in. I am nervous about receiving a repair kit, when they couldn’t get it right the first time. Now I am trusting my husband to fix it correctly, if they even send the parts.

This is one reason I am glad I voted for Obama for president. The news a out hazardous cribs is NOT news. I read about it several years ago in a book by Gregory Pallast. However, because Bush was president, nothing was done, because the Consumer Product Safety Comission was underfunded and simply a lap dog for corporate interests.
Under the Obama Administration, the CPSC can no do its job effectively. I am sure that many babies will be thankful to Obama for restoring the CPSC to its proper role.

Well what a surprise. Their website took forever to load, and once it did you can’t do anything on it. Nothing is showing up. What a shame, someone needs to take responsibility.

One more reason we need to get on the caseof these companies having China make things for us. We have had toys laced with lead paint, drywall causing problems in homes…what’s next?
Start checking these sites out for things made in the USA and support them and our economy.

With Walmart and these big retail chains squeezing their suppliers to the point that suppliers are forced to export manufacturing overseas we would not have this mess. What good does it do when Walmart sells cheaper goods when people are losing their jobs, how can they pay if there is no source of income. We need to be more “protectionist” in terms of safeguarding manufacturing, we cannot become a country of consumers only dependent on cheap goods from overseas. Consumers need not be afraid to spend a little more on quality products. Believe me; I am in the furniture/mattress business.

The company website is offline. You can’t even contact them online. The phone line is constantly busy and you can’t get through. This should be a class action suit. No innocent baby should have died from this company’s neglect and failure to correct the problem. Where’s the consumer’s rights?

The website is not loading and i don’t want to even think about the hassle its going to take to get someone on the phone. I bought our crib online so its not like i can just take it to the store.

Just to put this in perspective. We are talking about 4 deaths in 17 years on 2,100,000 products. AND, these cribs are only dangerous when they are assembling incorrectly against the included directions.
I know that people get all excited when we talk about saftey of innocent children, but you are twice as likely to be struck by lightning then be killed in this crib.

Before condemning this company for their website being unavailable, realize that they are probably getting MUCH more traffic then they normally have to deal with and their webservers are unable to deal with the load.
It’s caused the Slashdot effect, and its not really their fault.

Lets just ignore every other stupid thing Obama has done the few months hes been in… Social Healthcare… hey it will be illegal to not have healthcare, but at least you’ll get your healthcare in prison…Im glad that if that passes we will have our freedom and free enterprises to deal with health insurances… Treating Terrorists like civilians of our country meanwhile risking american lives by trying 9/11 lead to civil trial in the middle of manhattan… Not to mention the ever constant change of spending more money than we have, and by spending money we will get out of debt… Sounds as intellegible as the bush administration, its even a change! no not really its the same… The list goes on… But hey, because Obama is supposedly behind this recall… lets give him amnesty for screwing up worse than the bush administration. Im sure there is rational thought in Obama’s administration, I just have yet to see it.

How enlightening it would be if the media had the guts to also include WHERE the recalled products came from (e.g. CHINA!)

I have been trying since this summer to contact Storkcraft for replacement parts….since June 2009. I was also unable to reach them by phone…I think that the retailer who sold them should reimburse the customers!!! This is absolutely RIDICULOUS!!!!!

This is going to cause huge back-ups and headaches because of long lines at service desks and busy signals on phones. I’m glad I don’t have to deal with this one. It’s really a good thing that this is being done though, these are dangerous cribs obviously.
It’s really amazing that my sister and I have servived through our childhoods because a lot of things we had as kids in the 70s had been recalled years later.

Does anyone know if you can go to the store where you bought it and get the replacement parts for it?

I now know how to keep myself safe and can pass this information on to others. I know how important being safe with farm machinery is. I will always keep these wonderful safety tips in mind when I am around or using farm machinery

I have ordered the kit to fix my recalled crib twice…where is it? It’s been almost 4 months with nothing. I am getting fed up with waiting on this. They need to take responsibility for their products. My son is 8 months old now…he’s going to be grown out of his crib before I even get to use it!
