Heated Exchange: Republicans Call for Geithner to Step Down

Two House Republicans, Rep. Kevin Brady and Rep. Peter DeFazio, grilled Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner today — they pressed him on unemployment, the stimulus and called for him to resign

Geithner pushed back stating: "I think that almost nothing in what you said represents a fair and accurate perception of where this economy is today."

Watch the video of the fierce debate below.

Meh, the heavy lifting of saving the banking system is done. Go ahead and kill the messenger – I’m sure the banking industry is dying for a scapegoat to head off any real reforms addressing the actual causes.

anyone who owed the amount of back taxes that Mr. Geithner did should not be over the IRS or anything else. As a private nonaffliated american, I do not getn the protection that he does.

IMHO Geithner’s tax problem was worse than what Martha Stuart served jail time for!

I would like to understand why the republicans think eight years of Bush as president was so great. He is the worst president we have ever had and he is responsible for all the unemployment and the banking problems not Mr. Geithner or our president. Give them a chance to make it work.

Geithner gives Brady a smackdown! Kevin Brady and Peter DeFazio are idiot politicians who know nothing about running an economy.

Quit blaming Bush for the economy, other things yes, but the facts are that democrats have forced bad loans to be given out by the banks. The banks should have told Clinton to shove off … so they are at fault too .. democrats running congress for 10yrs now & look at where we are? And republicans are not much better … the fed gov’t is too involved in our lives where it should not be (education, banking, etc.). We need a new Ronald Reagan whatever party he comes from..but I don’t see anyone who fits this bill on the horizon…

****Looks like we have to ride this one out. The finger pointing right now has become childish and solves absolutely nothing. Right now we’re all chin deep in
this crap and we absolutely don’t need another
in the vat, do we.

Those that grilled the Treasury Secretary do not seem too factual when referring to the American people as a whole. Claims by the grillers do not seem too represents all of Americans, or the perceived state of the economy by all people. One might clearly see that there are some people that are not supporting any concern. of the present administration. Treasury Secretary is on track and is capable of holding his ground. Life must be lived forwards. Perhaps there are those trying to go backwards with issues rather the being concerned with today’s issues.

I bet you George Washington is rolling in his grave right now; he knew a two party system would somehow roll into what we have now. Congress and the executive branch should get a thorough, 21st century house-cleaning. Then, when we send someone to Washington to get something right, they’ll do the task and not blame anyone else for it.

Brady is an idiot! I am an unemployed American. I lost me job 3 months ago due to a decade of neglect of the
Bush administration to watch over the little guys. The only concern Bush had was to line the pockets of his friends here in Dallas, where I live and am very aware of the legacey Bush has left. President has barely been in office a year and they want to blame all this mess on him simply infuriates me! They contiue to push this stupid agenda and completely ignor their responsibility for the mess!!! UGH!!!

This economic mess has been a long time coming. It has gotten so out of control that it popped and now everyone is blaming someone else. The lying, cheating, greed, and lack of accountability has been the norm that we got used to.
Obviously, it doesn’t work….

Timothy Geithner has accomplished more in redirecting methods and procedures to change the direction the financial debacol in only a few months; bailed out the stupid greedy bankers taking citizens monies and giving to the favorite buddies. Put many Wall Street guys in jail, stopped the hidden Swiss accounts and forced US money back to US. Created regulation of banks & mortgage companies for the first time, putting a brake on corruption within their ranks, sending their leaders to prison. Large heads had rolled. Good job Geithner. Good Job indeed. The only negative that can be said about Geithner is that he’s making Republicans look bad as did nothing but continue all the wrong things till it crashed. Geithner is our unsung Hero.

Where were all these furious Reps when GW was in office?? I know where Kevin Brady was at, and it was UP GW’s rear. Check the record…because those Reps that are whining now are the worst Reps of the lot.

I read someone’s statement on here the Bush was somehow responsible for the financial mess. He wasn’t.
The whole “affordable housing” initiative began with Clinton and Barney Frank. Clinton is the one whose idea it was to offer homes to people who couldn’t afford it, so that people could realize “the American dream”. Clinton likes to use feel-good catch phrases like that, when the truth of the matter is that these programs saddled people with 30 years of debt they couldn’t afford because the underwriters looked the other way.
So, no, anybody who takes the position that this crisis is totally Bush’s fault is absolutely and unequivocally 110% incorrect. The statement couldn’t be less accurate, and don’t believe everything Obama tells you, lady.

Would any of your comments change if you knew that Peter DeFazio is a Democrat — and that the calls for the resignations of the Treasury Secretary and Larry Summers are bipartisan? The Conservatives and Progressives are together on this folks. It’s the same as when all sides realized what a travesty Rumsfeld was. There’s more that we have in common than we don’t have.
