Tony Blair, President of Europe?
ABC's Jean Fievet reports from London: Picture the scene at the next summit of world leaders. President Obama lines up for the traditional group photo with the representatives of the globe’s biggest economies: President Hu Jintao of China, Prime minister Yukio Hatoyama of Japan…and President Tony Blair of Europe. It just might happen. The European Union is going to get its first ever president, thanks to a treaty that comes into effect on December 1st. The idea is that the new position will allow the European Union to speak with one voice, and better project its influence around the world. It replaces the current system where the E.U. is led by a different national leader every six months. After some serious horse trading, the leaders of the 27 members of the EU are due to choose their new president on Thursday. The decision will be made behind closed doors during a special summit in Brussels. Even at this late stage, there is still no consensus on who to choose, but Tony Blair is said to be keen to get the job, and is widely seen as one of the front runners. His supporters say the former British prime minister is a well-known international figure who will bring clout to the role. It would be a remarkable comeback for the leader who was pushed from office by his own party and a disillusioned public, his reputation in Europe tarnished by the Iraq war. There are, however, a few snags. “President of Europe” sounds impressive, but in reality the E.U. treaty is vague about the role, and for now the most important decisions will continue to be made in the Council, the body made up of Europe’s elected leaders. Whoever becomes “President of the European Council”, to give the post its full title, will hardly be on equal terms with Presidents Obama and Hu. The EU’s economy may be bigger than that of the US or China, but the president of Europe will have no democratic mandate or executive powers. As for Mr Blair, he is still a very divisive figure because of the war in Iraq, and for many he comes with way too much baggage. What’s more, not everyone wants a high profile president: many would prefer a low-key, modest technocrat. So Europe may well choose the path of least resistance when it comes to choosing its first ever president. A man that most of Europe has never heard of, Belgium’s prime minister Herman Van Rompuy, is currently favourite for the role. In the European Union, compromise candidates from small countries often triumph in the end. The odds are stacked against Tony Blair. It would be quite a comeback.

Blair will not become the president. A majority of the europeans reject to the idea of Blair as president. It would be an insult to the european union that Blair who rejected the € in the UK and was the pet of the white house during the Bush years would represent Europe. Van Rompuy, the Belgian prime minister has the most favorite odds.

The British have always had one foot inside the EU and one foot outside. They do not even have thr euro…And now, Tony Blair wants to represent the EU. In addition he supported Bush when he invaded Irak. I do not think Europeans want such a president for the EU.

The EU should stand for peace and to have Blair as president would symbolize a war movement mentality. It could be the end of it. Have someone who promotes diplomatic talks, not one that jumps to conclusions and goes to war without all facts. He comes with too much baggage, and to start something new he doesn’t fit, but at this point who cares. Just hearing this news makes me not care about the EU.

Every one has a right to aspire for a new office, its not that everyhting about blair is poor judgement but good reasoning too! people we need to learn to comment objectively rather than simoly show hate messages. Show substance in your comments by arguing reasons why you Blair is not fit for a given position, otherwise such un reasoned negative comment indicate uncilized minds.
Thanx

Tony Blair lacks the moral integrity for such an elevated position. His appointment as President of the European Council, in defiance of the wishes of the people of Europe, would discredit the EU for good.
The EU cannot work without public support.

For the record, Tony Blair was not “pushed from office by his own party”. He retired from the job, as he had always said he was going to. There were significantly more Blair supporters than Brown supporters when he resigned; many would still like him back.
I don’t think he will get the EU job though as most Europeans don’t like the British flip-flopping about the EU all the time. Also Blair’s support for Bush’s warmongering foreign policy was unforgivable.

Personally,
I’d prefer to see a leader with a known track record heading up the E.U. Especially one that is a proven friend to the United States, even in times when our foreign policy isn’t at the height of popularity. Granted, I don’t much care about the popularity of our policy abroad. I care about our national security, economy, and ridding the world of terrorist, extremist regimes.

It is an insult to every citizen of every Country in the E.U. to infer that Tony Blair could be President of the E. U..This shows the complete indiffernce of the leaders in Europe to the matter of War and those who would wage it. Tony Blair does not belong behind a desk unless the desk is behind bars.
