World Cup Soccer Uproar: Undeserved Victory?

ABC's Christophe Schpoliansky reports from Paris: Today in France soccer fans are not running the streets or splashing in fountains to celebrate their team’s qualification for next year’s soccer World Cup in South Africa. The reason? Many believe the victory may not be that well-deserved after the team captain and striker, Thierry Henry, admitted accidently fouling with a handball. This allowed France to advance to the final round of the tournament with a 2-1 win over Ireland. Henry touched the ball with his hand twice before passing it on to defender William Gallas who scored the fateful goal against Ireland at the Stade de France outside Paris. The referee did not see the foul and honored the goal, despite protests by Irish players. Henry, a well liked player with a previously pristine reputation, admitted his mistake. “Yes, there is a handball but I’m not the referee” he told reporters after the match, adding “I was behind two Irish defenders, the ball bounced and touched my hand. Of course, I continued to play. The referee did not blow his whistle for the handball, but I can’t say that there was no handball”.  Irish players were outraged following their loss. “This is a shame! It is totally ridiculous that the referee and his assistants did not see Henry’s handball. It’s so obvious. It’s disgusting,” Ireland’s goal keeper Shay Given told reporters. “I am very disappointed by what Henry has done. He is a cheater. For me, he has tarnished his image forever,” he added.  On internet websites many criticized Henry’s integrity. “Henry must be heavily sanctioned, this man is disrespectful towards everyone” Meze wrote on lequipe.fr, France’s #1 sports newspaper. “What a lack of fair play. This is shameful. I am extremely disappointed by Henry” Etienne06 wrote on the same website. “I think Henry will never be able to play an international match without getting booed. His career is over” matteo_ddp wrote. “I’m ashamed to be French” added grego61. Henry later apologised, “I’m not the referee… but if I hurt someone I’m sorry” he Twittered a few hours ago. Despite the outrage there were supporters backing the French team. “There is a handball, but it is in our favor! Good!” wrote kimausoleil. “What is shameful is not Henry’s handball, it is the fact that the referee did not blow his whistle” Boubou74 wrote. This latest episode reopens the debate on the use of video to help referees do their job and avoid mistakes. Soccer’s governing bodies have been against the use of video in soccer matches. They argue that all soccer rules should be the same at both the amateur and professional levels. Another suggestion up for debate is the use of assistant referees behind each goal. The Union of European Football Associations started testing this solution recently.  The most famous case of overlooked foul play in a soccer match is former Argentine player Maradona’s “hand of god” goal in the 1986 World Cup quarter final against England. Following the unpenalized handball Argentina advanced in the tournament and won the World Cup that year.

Professional sports and amateur sports alike, should be abolished, as people today are only participating for the monetary benefits, and not for the sake of sports.
If you can’t take losing….then do not play.

That’s it..how do you lose? By cheating? Unfortunately that is why replay is very important.

FIFA are a complete disgrace. I used to have a lot of respect for these people, but when you see that blatant illegal handballs can send countries into Football’s biggest competition, one must question the bodies integrity. Their motto is “Fair Play”, I think it’s more like “Fair Cheating”.

Soccer, or Football, has always been dependent on the Referee and/or linesman actually seeing a foul. If scores were changed based on ‘instant replay’ it would slow the game down and interrupt play. If you read the rule, that is why the ref can signal ‘Play On’ when there is a foul he does not think will alter the flow of the game
game.
The thing that makes soccer appealing is that the athletes are expected to be fit enough to play a 45 minute half without stoppage for every little thing. Yes, this can alter the outcome of any one game, but over the season, it averages out. Every team benefits from a blind Referee once in awhile. No reason to get your shorts in a knot!

it is becoming a joke of a sport in which flopping and faking serious injuries and pleaing for free kicks and cards have taken the place of fair play and tough competition. Keepers are protected too much and there should be strong sanctions and rules against people faking injuries. Replay is bad- for the game- but should be used later to sanction/fine players who profitted from handballs and fake injuries.
Time-keeping should also go back to be the referees responsibility totally and they should use the clock (extra-time, playon, etc) to punish teams that fake injuries or cheat.
Football (soccer) is a tough game and that is way it was intended. Get rid of the excessive penalties, punish fakers, and the game will be better off.

Yes, the ball did hit Henry’s hand. And quick reflex action did the rest of the job. At least he was honest to say he had handled the ball but then it was up to the ref to blow the whistle. My guess is that the ref did not see it and play continued. What would an Irish player do if the same thing happened to him?

Soccer is not like american football. There is no instant replay to decide an infraction. In soccer, you play the whistle. As an ex soccer player, there are countless times that the ball has bounced up and touched my hand or arm and you play on. Thats soccer. People must stop whining. He didnt DRIBBLE down the field to cheat, he played the whistle. There are many slide tackles that Im sure were not called in that game either. Because someone didnt catch a slide tackle, is that player cheating? Sports arent pefect. It’s the REF’s fault for not catching it, or the leagues fault for not having instant replay. Spare Henry, come on.

World Soccer governing body, FIFA, must
find urgent solution to cheating in football. technology is to aid human
limitations especially the blind areas where incidents happen hidden.
The world cup qualification effort
by all nations involved should bring
happiness and joy to deserving qualifying nations and not sober and unwelcome victories-France, is too big to accept such shame. Ireland
is a good country with good people and should be allowed a share of football ecstacy.
FiFa, what has happen to fair play?

I’m Irish and would love to see Ireland in the World Cup next year but FIFA wont agree to a replay. I can understand their situation. They let this incident be replayed then every other match is going to be demanding a replay. The main issue about the Ireland-France match was that so much was riding on it. World cup qualification for Ireland would be worth about US$40 million and thats now gone with this decision.
Ireland might just have to support England in the World Cup instead….and hell might just freeze over!!

Everyone should be ashame of themselves. It is just a game. So he touch the ball with his hand. Big deal. There are 1000′s of children dying of HIV, starvation, war, turned into child slavery, and prostitution everyday. You don’t see society enraged about that but a bunch of grown men are crying because they lost a game because some guy touch the ball with his hand. Grow up and move on.

Where is this world coming to? So he touched the ball either intentional or not, he’s admitting it and if the referee did not make the call, it’s not the player’s fault.
If everyone in this game of soccer that touches the ball with the hand, were to be criticized and /or banned, fined or expelled from game, where would this game of soccer be? If anything, the Irish team should complain to the league and have those referees expelled from calling the games. PEOPLE, THERE ARE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS THAN SOCCER!!!!!

I’m not a france or Ireland’s soccer fan, but from watching the replay. I can tell that Henry clearly use that blind spot to his advantage; by using his hand to pass it to his leg and perfectly passes it to his teammate. It was an intentional handball not an accident like he later said. And I think Fifa is corrupted, the reason they don’t use replay, because replay will fix the outcome of the game during crucial moment. They can’t take someone’s money and not able to decide the outcome of the game if they can’t decide who win the game. Shame on you France and Fifa.

“Yes, there is a handball but I’m not the referee”. Oh! So it was the ref’s fault? Get a grip Henry!
