Americans Are Becoming More Isolationist

Interesting poll out today, especially given our increasing footprint in Afghanistan.  Nearly half of Americans say they want the nation to “mind its own business” when it comes to the affairs of the globe.  That is up from 30% back in 2002.  Pew did the polling.

Dude, Ron Paul was right. Of course I knew this. By the way I think Americans mean they want to practice non-interventionalism which is quite different from isolation.

The bridges, roads and schools in OUR country are falling apart because our tax dollars are being spent in other countries. OUR citizens are dying because they can’t afford the health care needed to keep them alive. No wonder so many people in the US are disillusioned. These days our tax dollars seem to be helping everyone BUT us!

Yes we should become more isolationist and do it now to start fixing our country and protecting our American citizens. Putting armed troops and sealing off the border with Mexico should be the first thing done.

I am just so upset that a country that is probably the richest in the world has the most debt in history! Not only the most, but a record for a President in his first year as a President. I am disgusted that we, I am one of the “we”, are unemployed, begging, borrowing and bartering for food, for money to pay for rent. This is not the way our forefathers wanted our country to be…STAY OUT OF OTHER PEOPLE’S BUSINESS IS RIGHT AND WORK ON YOUR OWN COUNTRY PRES OBAMA!

@DJ – Our forefathers were not faced with what we are faced with today. I agree the US needs to go on lockdown, take care of our own business, but remember, your personal economy is most likely a result of your own decisions.

Our President INHERITED all of this country’s problems ( job’s, poor economy, 2 wars) from previous President of last 8 years. We all should be thankful Bush is out of office. Let’s start praying for this President he needs all the help he can get.

Does anyone blame us for wanting to “mind our own business”? We’ve been trying to clean up the world’s problems ever since we’ve become a superpower. We helped Europe twice. We got into bad wars in Vietnam and Afghanistan and Iraq. We’ve spent untold trillions of dollars and allowed India and China to take our jobs and devalue their currencies and run huge trade surpluses while Americans lose their jobs by the millions. It’s time for America to retreat and heal its financial wounds. We cannot stop the world’s madmen from destroying things and causing problems all over the globe. Maybe it’s time China uses their huge surpluses to help out the world. Although I don’t know how a communist dictatorship could help the world. Both China and Russia have stopped us in the UN against taking actions against Iran whose nuclear activity and support of terrorism threatens Israel and the rest of the world.

I think we are not ever going to be free of other countries plights. We have a vested interest in our allies problems. We have to protect them as they are protecting us, just not as greatly as we do for them.
We are suffering now, due to greed in the Banking industry, Wall street, and the Mortgage industry. This is none of our faults. The regulations were bent to appease the Mortgage/loan industry. We live in a society that wants instant gratification. Horrors it would be to save money before buying anything. Credit cards are our demise. Even houses (save at least 20%)and keep the loan small, car, whatever, save for it or don’t buy it.
We may never get out of debt but I’m hoping we can still keep our country safe from terrorists and to do that we need to be sure other countries are safe as well.

Gerald – Yes and no. We are responsible for the decisions we make, but the Fed, congress and treasury can destroy our economy or go to war needlessly. We are unfortunately at their mercy on some of these things. Of course we elect the folks that are supposedly representing us.
Roscoe-Agreed, however the bubble has been building really since the Bretton-Woods breakdown and the dollar being decoupled from any commodity. The Carter Doctrine also saw to it that we would fight costly wars to obtain our oil that God happened to put under the sand of others. To blame Bush wholly is shortsighted. Bush also inherited the dot-com bubble which was stimulated out of existence only to create an even bigger housing bubble. And for those that think Clinton has balanced budgets, think again. He was raiding Social Security to offset short fallings.

Posted by: Huh | December 3, 2009, 4:14 pm 4:14 pm

Bob – You are right. WWII was justified because we were attacked. However, many wars since then have been fought to enforce UN resolutions. Vietnam, Korea, and Iraq fall into this category. We have sold our sovereignty to the UN and have had to undertake the costly role as world’s policeman. We have given our industries to China, even our high tech ones. It always makes me laugh when the powers that be worry about China. I do take issue with your last sentence or two. Iran hasn’t attacked anyone preemptively in a vary long time maybe 100 years. We attack someone every other year so the question arises: Who does the world really have to look out for? It is also important to read about Operation Ajax in order to understand why Iran hates us and rightfully so. And as far as Israel goes, just look at the West Bank and the numbers on settlement expansion, and then ask yourself if we should support the Israelis or the Palestinians. Who has the moral high ground? I support a strong national defense for this country, but creating enemies right and left through a belligerent foreign policy only puts us in the crosshairs.

Isolationism in the United Staes is very foolish and dangerous…. Aparently The American People are ver short-sight and have forgotten that the U.S. erred too much on the side of isolationism prior to WWI and WWII
It Has Become Perfectly Clear That The America Are Now Nothing More Than Spineless Cowards With Little To No Back Bone For Freedom….

Huh wrote:”Many wars since then have been fought to enforce UN resolutions. Vietnam, Korea, and Iraq fall into this category.” — Really! Iraq was opposed by all countries but the UK because there was no credible evidence of WMDs and UN inspectors were there telling the US not to go in… Vietnam was not, as opposed to Korea, a UN project, but an attempt by the US to prevent the Communists to take South Korea, and it failed miserably. After WW II, the US went out to Central America, supported Saddam, Noriega, the Iran Shah, the Taliban, Bautista to protect or enhance their ECONOMIC interests. All of these actions have come to bite the US in the arse. The US can be a force for GOOD in the world if it decides to do so; getting out of the world stage will be negative for the US, but getting the military out of most of the 130 countries where they are would be a positive gesture saving billions of $ that may be used to solve problems at home.

Minding our own business politically is not isolationism, it’s non-interventionism. It is in fact the constitutionally legal thing to do. Firms should be allowed to engage in economic trade with foreign countries without the governmental intervention. Are the two concepts really so difficult to understand?

I believe many Americans are tied of spending trillons on helping everyone except Americans, as this lets fight the terrorist over there is getting old.
If we can spend trillons on two Wars, we can defintely find ways to actually improve America with this money instead. It does not need to go to banks, or even special bailouts, but rebuilding and improving America.
I believe is naive to believe we will ever get the debt back down to something that could actually be paid off. It will be lucky if we can even get our deficit balanced. Ross Perot back with his voo-doo stick had it planned that every American back nearly 20 years ago when the debt was $4 trillon could jack the tax rate up to 50% for four years to paid that debt in full. Now we are heading toward $12 trillon with more taxpayers, but come one, we are giving away America as fast as we can.
If we are going to spend ourselves silly, lets start doing smart things like Isreal does with Terrorist, fight them with counter-cells. Not huge armies that occupy other countries for years on end who are nothing more than targets.
We need to be really investing in America, and responder smarter to the rest of the world, taking a lessor role instead of taking on the world as Bush did in Iraq.

If this trend continues, think Ron Paul 2012.

An Individual is overly simple if she/he doesn’t have a bit of a pragmatic character. America government is structured to deal with world events. There are some of us common citizens that understand that our government will not just sit while others are posturing to do harm to the US or our allies. Defending our country should be the business ever citizen; and not just me and other armed force personnel.

Let us not forget that it was Bush 2 who embroiled us into an un-necessary war which cost us over 4,000 of our kids lives & a trillion dollars.AND HE LIVES IN DENIAL OF HIS ARROGANCE & STUPIDITY.

NO this poll is wrong! I want to spend trillions on wars against 14th century backwards religious zealots living in caves, on anti-AIDS programs in Africa to people who don’t understand the idea of how HIV spreads, on corrupt dictatorships or mismanaged “populist” countries, to defend shipping lanes so cheap chinese products and over-priced foreign oil can come to my ports, to give grain to people who can’t manage to feed themselves ensuring another generation of worse famine the next time, to corporate tax breaks, to contractors, to help prevent “global warming” in schemes that benefit big international banks and bodies, on the UN so they can criticize the USA, and on the IMF/WB/OECD cartels so that all countries are forced to adhere to bankster capitalism or go into international banker receivership or turn communist and get even more illegals immigrants to flood our shores. And all the rest of the crap.
What is surprising is that MORE people aren’t rational. Stop foreign spending. Intervene only in REAL national interest (and do it quickly). Humanitarian goals are good- even those to poor countries- but better served by the private sector (churches, rich folks, charities, missionaries, etc.)

Everybody says Clinton erred by not killing Osama bin_Laden, but now we find out Bush could have captured him in 2001. What partisan fools the Republicans are!

This is such good news. It’s about time
that America concenrates, focuses on its
own problems. We need to get back on the
best financial track and not be spending, or wasting billons of dollars
in corrupt and ungrateful countries.
We do not have to be isolationists, but
for the sake of this great nation, let’s get on with repairing and healing
the United States of America.

What a Joke! We had no business in Iraq that I know of. No weapons of mass destruction and Saddam opposed Al Qaida and did not support religios extremism. What a waste! Afghanistan frankly is not a nation and their issues and problems are way beyond what we can help. Our efforts in Kandahar and Helmand Province only demonstrate the complexity of issues in Afghanistan and our lack of understanding of the issues. Kandahar is not only where One eyed Omar founded the Taleban, but it is a major strong hold of the Karzai families Populszai (sp.) lineage of the Durrani tribe. If we pull out will likely duke it out with the Gilzai tribals and their Taleban supporters. If these comments confuse you then imagine how confused the American and Brits are. Bring our boys home and send tomahawks to the Al Qaida.

Actually, it seems that it is especially Charlie Gibson who is becoming more isolationist. He’s isolated from reality. He didn’t know about the ACORN scandal and he apparently doesn’t know about ClimateGate. He’s isolated from the rest of the world, living in his own little make believe planet where he lies to the American public through his omissions of important stories and then wishes us all to have a great day.
Earth to Gibson. Earth to Gibson. Perhaps it would be wise to retire to your rocking chair now rather than later.

“America might become the dictatress of the world. She would be no longer the ruler of her own spirit…Our glory is not dominion, but liberty.”
- Pres. John Quincy Adams
The Pentagon wastes blood and treasure in the backwaters of the world. The State Department gives away our taxpayer money to self-serving, sanctimonious governments. And our CIA prefers to sow the seeds of discord overseas rather than just intelligence gathering. Enough is enough.

Bring the troops back is good but it will not mean we will have the money to fix our country we did not have the money before we got into the wars and we will not have the money if we stop the wars now. Many says the way to fix things is to cut taxes that has not worked. The old battle cry was to cut waste but we put people in so they can make sure we get piece of the pie. If you want money to fix our oriblems then we need to accept the fact that you can’t spend what you don’t have.

I agree that we should pull out and let the rest of the world defend their own and advance our military power even more than it is but do it right here on our soil.
