Charlie Gibson to Sign Off From ‘World News’ on December 18
Jon Banner, executive producer of “World News with Charles Gibson”: It’s that time of year in this great country of ours when we give thanks for family and friends and focus on the things that matter most to us. It’s no different here in the newsroom, where we are preparing to see our very good friend and anchor off as he begins a new journey. We’ve known this day was coming; Charlie first told us of his desire to retire in early September. As he said then, it’s the right time for him and his amazing family. So today I wanted to let you know that Charlie’s last day as anchor of World News will be December 18. We’re going to spend a good deal of time during his final week on the air looking back at the stories Charlie covered, hearing again from some of the remarkable people he interviewed, and paying tribute to our friend and colleague, and the enormous contribution he has made to ABC News over the last three decades.

Charlie, I first started watching you on “Good Morning America” and then when you replaced Peter. It will not be the same. You have become a very valuable part of my day by informing me about what is going on in the world. I wish you and your family the very best as you begin this new part of your life. On a lighter note I know that you like to ski and now you will be able to do it.

Charlie;
We will be so sorry to see you go! Your voice has been one of reason and thoughtfulness–a welcome anchor (literally!) to help us understand the times we’re living through. I hope you will consider doing some in-depth specials now and again so we do not have to part with you permanently.

Charlie, I will miss you greatly. You have been one of the greats following in the path of Peter Jennings, and others. I hope we will continue to see you on specials or other events as you have a wonderful view of people and world events and make me feel hopeful. Have a good retirement and best wishes.

Long past due, in my opinion. His dismissal of the ACORN case was just plain embarrassing. He’s full of smugness and condension and lacks any intellectual curiosity whatsoever. Now we can look forward to having Sawyer read the news to us! Better yet, switch over to Fox and let Brett Baier tell you what’s really going on.
Posted by: diva4ever | December 1, 2009, 3:33 pm 3:33 pm
Past his prime! Embarrassed the network with no knowledge of ACORN scandal. No intellectual curiosity.

It will be different on December 19. I have always felt that Charlie was objective and straight forward with his reporting and always empathized with each individual.

Charlie, you are the greatest. My wife and I start everyday with GMA and end with World News. After that the networks are just a garbled mess. I guess I am too old-fashioned, going to miss you my friend. Keep your friendly face and immense wit public, we need you!

Charlie,
I have watched ABC news for many years and you are a news “Icon”. Your professionalism and personality are first rate and I will miss seeing you on the news. My teenage sone once said at the end of one of your news broadcast “Mom, when I hear him say hope you had a good day” it really makes you feel good inside that he really means that. I hope you have many good days to come in your retirement. Thank you and Enjoy!!!
Posted by: Denise | December 1, 2009, 3:41 pm 3:41 pm
Charlie, you will be missed. I’ve been watching you for many, many years – since GMA. You were the only person who could take over when we lost Peter so tragically. Best wishes for a wonderful retirement, but I hope we’ll see you now and then.

Charlie Gibson. It was your GMA name and your World News Tonight name. You never became stuffy when you took Peter’s chair. I started watching GMA 30 years ago…after I got married. I watched Hartman amd Lundin and then the next era, Gibson and Sawyer. Such memories were made. Most good, but some horrific, like 911. Thank you for bringing the news to everyone with such dignity. Your voice is so calming, yet convincing. Only an experienced newsman can do it the way you can. God Bless you and like you say to us at the end of your broadcast, “I hope that you had a good day”.

Charlie, ignore these negative people. You will truly be missed — I used to get excited when you substituted for Peter, then you were there all the time. I wish you the best and will miss your slights and humor as well as your good reporting.

Charlie, you will be greatly missed. You and Peter Jennings have always in my opinion been the best newscasters on TV and loved watching you when you were on Good Morning America. It’s hard to replace one of the best. Enjoy your time with family and friends but remember you will be missed by many.

You will be missed Charlie. You came in at a bad time and made a smooth transition. And for the last 2 years have been the face of ABC news and been party of the ABC family for 30 years. Congrats and have fun sleeping to noon.

Charlie,
I have watched you since you first came on World News & before that on Good Morning America–what I like about you, and Peter Jennings, you report the news-and do not try to impose yourself in the news–I like “Just the facts, M’am”, as Jack Webb used to say!! Good luck in your retirement.

Charlie, we are so sorry to see that you have decided to retire. Will really miss you and your daily reporting. You have been a very dedicated reporter and the best of luck in the future. Sorry Diane is taking you place…wish it could have been George.
Blessings for your future plans.

I always like Charles Gibson when he was on the morning show. I just don’t think he was a good fit for the nightly news. His rude and condescending manner while interviewing Sarah Palin during the campaign really soured me on him. I hope that Diane Sawyer will be able to maintain her objectivity when dealing with tougher issues and interviews. Hate to see her go down the same path as Gibson, and for that matter, Katie Couric, too.

Hey Charlie:
Hate to see you go buddy, but you deserve a great retirement to enjoy with your family. We will miss you big time, you are so good at what you do and my goodness we hope you can come back from time to time, please? You are such a gentle person, please take care of yourself and enjoy what you earned, respect, peace, love, and all the good things a wonderful person like you deserves… We are very happy Dianne Sawyer will be anchoring because somehow we are use to seeing Diane on GMA with you in past years, so…Good luck Charlie and Welcome Diane!!!

My best to you and your family. Enjoy retirement. You have been the best anchorman to replace Peter Jennings whom I adored very much and looked forward to his broadcasts. You have done a wonderful job in his place. Your reporting gave the just the facts and your ever smiling presence at the end of your broadcasts will be missed.
Take care. God bless.

Obama is speaking tonight about the war strategy. If he’s talking about the war taking longer than one year, I hope that the American people will come out against this.
What you can’t do in one year, just let it go.
Charlie, what do you say about this?
Where’s your voice?
Talking about Bush or Palin is easy.
What do you have to say about Obama’s plan?

Your interview of Palin (by asking her to comment on the Bush Doctrine when there are at least 10 different Bush Doctrines, and ignoring her when she asked you to clarify which Bush Doctrine you were refering to) was low road, dirty. If that is professionalism (as several of your viewers regard you), either the word has a different meaning in the dictionary, or those viewers do not know how to flatter professionally.

All the Liberal activists seem to be running for the exits.
Maybe they find it too difficult to pretend to being oblivious to the multitude of scandals eminating from the Democrat Party and the Obama White House?
Or maybe they see the writing on the wall that the vast majority of Americans DO NOT want an over-sized, greedy, corrupt Socialist dictatorship – and they are fleeing to their elitist cocktail parties where they can snicker and guffaw at Sarah Palin and the rapidly expanding Tea Party movement – whiste they ignore their impending doom.
I’m gonna send you a nice fruit basket, Charlie.
May your parachute deploy fully upon impact.

You have been a part of my daily routine for quite some time. I was sad when you left Good Morning America, but was happy when you started anchoring World News. I will miss you on World News. Often if I can’t see all of the Evening News, I have to see and hear you say “I hope you had a good day and have a good night.”
I always felt as though you could be the neighbor next door. Thanks for sharing your personal life with all of your fans.
Again, the 5:30 news won’t be the same without you. I hope that you have a good day, and enjoy retirement!

I will miss him, but glad to see him go. I can’t watch WNT without thinking about how he muffed that story. And THAT make me wonder what else he’s self editing.

Charlie; Your retirement from the news world is the end of an era, the news greats Morrow, Huntley and Brinkley, Cronkite, Paul Harvey and now Gibson. The trust in the media has not been passed on. The media has become very polarized presenting only one side of issues. There seems that the lights in night to help us understand the true issues of the world and every time leave us with a smile are now going dark. You will be missed.

favorite Uncle Walter Cronkite, who I
grew up with, you have become my 2nd
most trusted Newscaster and I will
miss you giving me the” honest ” straight stuff nightly, but retirement
comes to us all, so enjoy it and have
a lot of fun going back to all of those places you have been as a journalist,
only this time as a tourist with your
camera and your journal to record your trips. As Bob Hope once said,” Thanks
for the memories “. May GOD BLESS you
and your family for all of eternity.

Charlie you will certainly missed in our home. Even when news was bad we always felt so much better hearing it from you.
diva4ever…you know new televisions have a special button on them, called a channel changer, push it and you can go to a different channel. If you don’t like somebody don’t watch, easy as that, but don’t slam them on their own network page. Obviously you don’t care for Charlie so why bother commenting here, push the button and change the channel, we will all be better for it.
Farewall Charlie. You will be missed. Enjoy your retirement! And yes, we WILL stick around for Diane!

Charlie,
You’re a complete father of the world. Though Americans would say i’m
alien, you know the world today is a small community that included even me.
You’ve served the world with so much commitment; and for the United states, you’re an ambassador extraordinary!
My little voice, you always amplify
for the audience because you believe
the voice.
Now that you’ll be having some private time to your family and yourself, i look forward to a time you’ll visit us in Africa.
Sir, thank you for all you’ve done
for the world, and for The United States of America, and may the almighty God continue to give you the strenght to guide the world.

I have to say that I am going to dearly miss “Uncle Charlie”. My wife and I rush to watch the news each night much like people many years ago who would gather around a crystal radio. In our opinion he has presented the news in a more than fairly unbiased way. In short, he will be missed. However, we are looking forward to “Aunt Diane” picking up where he left off. In closing, I think we should all wish Charlie “a good day” and a good life. :)

You and world news have inspired me to get involved with politics and our country. i can remember all the intersting pieces you were there for 9/11 the election of Barack Obama and Michael Jacksons Funeral and the same to Ted Kennedy’s. I will still continue watching the show but you will be missed.

Charlie…Every single evening after a hectic workday as an electrician I arrange my early evening schedule to never miss your WNT broadcast. You are a consumate professional and most importantly…a genuine person. You not only deliver the news , you are as emotionally involved as we the viewers are.Lump in my throat to say “I hope you have good days ahead & a great retirement ! “

Dear Charlie,
I have watched you over the years on GMA & when you came on the evening news. You made starting the day fun & you weren’t afraid to show your ‘human’ side. I loved when you said that your most favorite romantic movie scene was the one of the Disney movie w/ ‘Lady & the Tramp’ eating the spaghetti & meatballs! You weren’t afraid to show your caring & sentimental side! You were steadfast & gentle and very caring in your reporting of 911 & w/ so many other extremely serious stories. You always tried so hard, even on horrible news evenings, to end on a gentle note or uplifting story of hope and you could truly see that come out in your joy as you described the ‘person of the week’. You have been the ‘person of many years’ and I would like to wish you many happy, healthy, & good years ahead for you and your family despite the fact that I will miss you very much. All the very best and thank you so for sharing yourself with all of us for all these years!!!
