Church Sacrifices Tiffany Window to Keep Door Open for the Homeless

If you missed last night’s broadcast, please watch this story below.  ABC’s John Berman reported on a church in Vermont that is selling a cherished window to keep a homeless shelter open.

A Tiffany stained glass window depicting St. John the Divine has been in the church for 100 years, but the congregation is willing to sacrifice it to raise $75,000.  Watch the video and share your thoughts in the comments.

After 10 minutes of commercials I give up. Still haven’t seen the video for this.

Yes, too many repetitive commercials – I will make sure to purchase NONE of these products as I now associate them with frustration!

Perhaps some never able to spend all of their money rock star, movie star, or sports figure, who one always hears and sees how they profess their love of their god, will fund this program, as this is truly Gods work. There are others out there as well who could, in one fell swoop, solve this funding dilemma for this much needed program.
The window should stay with the church.

…but the “prosperity mega preachers” say God blesses with prosperity. So why is this church (and many others)so in need? Are they not blessed? Some people use their last two dollars for gas in their car to go to a church that preaches “prosperity”. I feel this church has done the right thing. Even more beautiful than the stained glass is the smile on the face of a well fed homeless person!

The Catholic Church in Rhode Island has been dismantling churches in poor areas in a similar way over the last decade. The best bits of Notre Dame parish in Central Falls was picked over bit by bit were scuttled away with one excuse or another. First the beautiful stained glass windows, which the parishioners were told were old and drafty, were replaced with cheap colored glass. Then the magnificent pipe organ was whisked away and replaced with a cheap electric organ. Then the church pleaded poverty and hit up the elderly parishioners for hefty capital fund campaign contributions to shore up the foundation. Finally they closed the church, desecrated it, and sold it to another church for a few million. The cash from the sale was put into a nearby parish in a wealthier community. The religious statuary of the century-old church was quietly sold at an unpublished auction and mostly scarfed up by local dealers who dispersed it to the four winds.
Almost forgot – before the church was sold it was “merged” with the wealthier community.
In God We Trust – All Others, Pay Cash.

To navigate the story behind the website, you stay on and it clicks into the story automatically. commercials are part of our life, get used to it. I agree, the window should remain with the church. As I am always looking on the bright side, I am sure that the minute they try to remove it, it will shatter. God will provide somehow…say a prayer..

this touches me greatly, but where was the church when things began to dissaray? and how many couldnt or didnt benefit from the homeless shelter sooner. also wonder who the “have” is that will purchase this and feel noble, when the “have nots” are supposed to feel gratitude and thankfulness at the glory of their higher powers??

This is a wonderful story and reaffirms my hope for man’s return to love and kindness to some degree. As a speaker who addresses the “haves” on behalf of those who have become homeless, as I once was, I have uncovered a few interesting statistics along the way when researching statistics. One of the most interesting bits of data that I ran across was that in any given community in America, the number of homeless people in that area is almost directly proportionate the number of churches in that area. In other words if each church were to adopt just one homeless person, there would be no homeless people.

Looting of America’s economy by the NWO government Wall Street Insiders, International Banksters and War Profiteers destroyed the jobs and put these people on the street. This government and Corporate American corruption has been looked upon as success and the roll model for prosperity hype deceivers who have polluted the pulpits of America. It is so refreshing to see some Church groups waking up out of the prosperity hype delusion and actually doing something as Christ would do.

Yes, I’ve been out of work for more than 16 months. Everyday, I give thanks that I have a roof over my head and protection from elements. I can reach for my checkbook and contribute $100.00 to help others in time of need. Isn’t that what Christmas is all about? Let’s see now, that’s First Baptist Church, Brattleboro, Vt., got it.

I spent more than a little time getting in here hoping to find an address for this Burlington Church, which should have been included in the TV report. No such luck. What’s the point of reporting something like this if you don’t include info so people can help?

Posted by: Jim | December 23, 2009, 7:52 pm 7:52 pm

I would like that church to keep that window and would like to donate as we all should at this time of year to do what’s right and give to help this church who gives so much to those in need. Is there a place to send donations so we all can send in what we can to buy that window and keep it where it is. Thanks.

Even though I don’t go to this church downtown, I am glad to see some good come of this exposure.
Yes, we are a tiny rural town, and yes we stroll the cows down main street each year, and we have been hit hard by this economy too.
We all try to help our neighbors, so national coverage on this is a good thing for all of us.
See we all are not ex-hippies and nudists around here.
Just plain folk trying to survive.
Happy Holidays and health too all.

Well, fewer commercials and more show is always best, but I didn’t log on to talk about that.
What a wonderful thing the people of the U.S. are doing by helping this church! I was wishing last night that I could send them money, but being down to my last few pennies this month, really can’t.
I’m so glad that some who can are doing so, though. People need food and kindness especially during this holiday season and it is heartening to see that others understand that.

I live in a small community just north of Brattleboro, VT. I knew the church helped the homeless but I did not know the need of the church. I will gladly send them some money knowing that I am supporting what is considered a ‘community’ shelter. See, up here with towns being small and the distance being far to shelters, my town doesn’t have a place for feeding and sheltering of the homeless or poor. They go to other towns for such help. But what we don’t have here physically I like to believe we make up for with kindness. We help those less fortunate although our town is considered among the less fortunate. If we can’t donate money, we donate food or time. We are the helping hand, the shoulder to cry on, we are the neighbors down the street, around the corner or next door.
I would hope that someone with wealth that far exceeds what can be found in my wallet, my neighbors wallet or the church coffers would come to the ‘rescue’ of this window. Let it remain in the church and set up a continuing fund to keep the homeless fed and sheltered in this small community and the towns that surround it. This is the real challenge. We know that the many pockets of those who can barely afford to keep themselves housed and fed will donate. But what about the person or persons who have more to give? Are they willing to step up and help out? My check is in the mail, is yours?

I too had problems viewing the video. That being said, where can I send a donation, and how else can I help?

Somebody is actually taking the window?
Give them the money and let them keep their window.
Either a wealthy person could do this or a group of people.
I couldn’t feel good about myself if actually took their cherished window.
What’s the address?

If the church puts the windows into Ebay Auction,I think they will get more money.

This congregation truly understands the message of Jesus. I applaud their decision to help the people in their community. Although I highly value the preservation of our country’s art and architecture, our ability to extend help to those in need is priceless and rises above all material possessions.
