Will Democrats Ever Wake Up?
ABC's Stu Schutzman reports from New York: On this morning after the stunner in the Bay State, Democrats arise justifiably devastated. “If that’s not a wakeup call,” Democrat Evan Bayh told our Jon Karl, “there’s no hope of waking up.” Will they? Health Care reform is at ground zero. At every turn during the Democratic push for reform, there has been a constant chorus of dissent out there in the country. Music to which many Democrats turned a deaf ear, some at their own peril. The outcry came not just from the political fringes, but from the great middle including many of the independent voters who helped sweep Barack Obama into the White House. Are they listening now? If they are, they will hear the question again and again, “Why are they trying to jam reform down our throats?” The anger in the country is palpable — I hear it all the time. “Where are their priorities?” Priorities amid a raging recession claiming too many Americans’ jobs and homes and life savings. The White House rationale — reforming health care was a cornerstone of the President’s campaign so strike while the iron is hot. With both Houses of Congress in tow, there may not be a better opportunity. Some close to the President tried to sell it as a cure for the sinking economy. Think again. What the American people actually witnessed was an ugly process replete with misinformation, disinformation, back room deals, and hands in the cookie jar swapping votes for political goodies. The voters of Massachusetts voiced their outrage at that last night. So what do the Democrats do now? Some say stay the course, try to glue the remnants of this bill together and ram it through before the balance in the Senate shifts? Some in the White House believed that could be political suicide. Sacrilege says one powerful Democrat. “Our respect for democratic procedures,” says Congressman Barney Frank, “must rule out any effort to pass a health care bill if the Massachusetts election had not happened.” Republican John McCain chimed in — “Stop this unsavory sausage making” he said, nuke the current bill and let’s start over together. Fat chance say many pundits — few believe Republicans and Democrats will work with together any time soon. Democrats, shaken to the core, dug this hole by themselves and for many of them, survival means digging out quickly. In whatever direction they decide to steer their agenda, maybe Democrats ought to begin by putting their ears to the ground… there’s real angst out there and until last night, they’ve hardly heard a word of it.

The first honest article on the mess of health care and how elected representatives deserve to get kicked in their pompous, self righteous, lying kiesters!
“Throw the bums OUT!” should be the national cry.

I think Democrats in middle-American and the South will “wake up”, the so-called Blue Democrats who are more inline with how the Democratic Party was in the past (a pro-USA, pro-worker, socially conservative party). However the leftist establishment running the national Democratic Party will not “wake up”. In their mind the “people” are wrong and backwards especially those in small towns, “fly-over country”, etc. Their mindset is that the people need a vanguard of elites to lead them since the people (working class, rural people, religious people, etc) aren’t aware of their own exploitation. This is in keeping with certain Marxist doctrine and will not change due to lost elections. These Democrats also hate the middleclasses because they feel that they are preventing “change” and so a goal is to eliminate them (hence illegal immigration, depressing wages, criticism of middle-class values, propaganda about middle-class hypocrisy, etc.)

This is a bunch of crap……the Insurance should go to help the Seniors and laid off workers and children who need it, not just anyone to dip in the medicare insurance. The big shots who have money can afford insurance….., the people out of a job and children need care……and the seniors need all the help they can get….thanks to you Obama we get no cost of living this year…….I’ve had bills to go up, how are we suppose to pay for those…..something definitely needs to be done, but don’t take it out on the insurance for people who need it…..make cuts elsewhere……you fat cats, try living on a thousand dollars a month and even less…….

As an ex-Obama supporter, I can guaranty the Mass. vote was about more than a rejection of the Health Care scam. Many voters, myself included, are even more upset about giving terrorists constitutional rights(including Miranda!!) and spending tens of millions of our tax dollars to defend them in New York City, while at the same time prosecuting our Navy Seals for giving one a bloody lip.

If only you read the new Health care bill would you know what they are trying to pull over our eyes. It’s more than just a health care bill. It’s major invasive socialism. This health care bill is the most hideous socialistic piece of garbage I have ever seen. We needed help with our medical bills but believe me you do not want this bill. Why didn’t they do it right? It’s invasive Marxism to the nth degree. We live in a Democracy, a give and take democracy. I do not hate Democrats and I do not hate Republicans, we needed a good bi-partisan bill for health care that actually is good for us Americans (no other nationals), not what they have implemented.
I prayed that a Republican would win in Massachusetts. We need equality in
congress. Not totalitarianism.

I think these responses are written mainly by paid conservative writers.
Statistics show that a majority want a public option or Medicare for All.
I have VA health care for myself, which I wish all other Americans could have.
Note: other countries (Norway, Finland, England) have and it hasn’t “broken” those countries–people’s leveis are improved.

The majority of those in Washington, are among the elitist wealthy in this country, and they associate with those like themselves……so they lose all concept of the common man and what the common man wants from Washington.
This is how the citizens get the attention of those who are supposed to be representing them.

Democratic leaders are a joke. Does not derseve any chance by the American people. They have their chance for a whole year, never come to agreement within themselves to push Obama’s agenda. They new this was coming and greediness and selfishness get in their ways and they failed the country. This healthcare should have been done with last year, instead, some greedy senators want some sweet deals for their constituencies and lost touch with reality. I’m a democrat but wish that most of the current senators be voted out office. They are currupt and not fit to govern.
This is a wake up call for Obama who should find another way for governance rather than relying on the current democratic house and senate to deliver for him. Obama, it’s time to be a commander-in chief and lead!!

Yesterday, I noticed that Wall Street was having a field day. Jim Cramer touted stocks in health insurance companies. FOX news got into the fray and encouraged its listeners to help Scott Brown get elected because they could increase the value of their 401K’s. Shahien Nasiripour on yesterday’s Huffington Post noted that the value of all health insurance stock jumped. I checked those companies today and discovered that some of the stock prices went down probably because of profit-taking, but the bottom line is that the real winner of yesterday’s election was Wall Street.
Wall Street of course will have to give all these new investors a handsome return on their investments. It will also have to pay the bills for their multi-million dollar advertising campaign. It will have to pay off lobbyists and give CEO’s generous bonuses. And since 2010 is an election year, health insurance and bigPharma will spend millions if not billions of dollars in political campaign contributions to Republicans and Blue Dog Democrats.
These expenses will come out of your pocket. If you pay for your own insurance, be prepared for steep increases (probably after the 2010 election when a GOP majority is assured.) If you get insurance from your employer, expect a steep increase in out-of-pocket expenses and high deductibles. If you get too sick to be profitable, expect to lose your insurance. If you are a woman, expect to pay more. And if you have a pre-existing condition, like asthma or a Caesarian, that’s just too bad. No insurance, no medical care.
We can expect more bankruptcies. As people have to pay more for insurance, they will have less money to spend elsewhere, so expect businesses, especially small businesses to close their doors. In addition, rising health insurance costs will cause a greater credit freeze for small business loans. Lest I forget, more people will die because of inadequate medical bills. More babies will die because of inadequate pre-natal care. And more desperate women will seek abortions because it’s the only way out of a hopeless situation.
Isn’t this a great victory?????
I remember a moment last fall when RNC Chairman Michael Steele spoke at Howard University. A student told Steele that her mother died because she could not afford the cancer treatments that would have saved her life. Michael Steel simply turned his back on her.
That best describes the GOP way of solving problems. Whether it’s our dysfunctional health care system, or global warming. The GOP simply insists the problem doesn’t exist.
Unfortunately, you can’t solve serious problems by turning your back on them. Our dysfunctional health care system is like a cancer. The more you delay treatments the worse it will get, until it destroys the whole economy.

I wonder which of you that have posted comments have health care right now? Any of you without insurance? Believe me, it will change your point of view. Those of us without will take SOME plan over NO plan–something is better than nothing.
We currently have health care rationing in this country–it’s rationed by cost. If you can’t afford it you don’t have it. As prices for all medical care rise and insurance premiums with it, more of you will be joining the uninsured group.
I support Obama’s push to get us healthcare–he identified it correctly as one of this country’s biggest problems. I regret that the lawmakers in Washington think that the current rationing-by-income-level plan is somehow “cheaper” than coverage for all. I would bet that if everyone in Congress lost their healthcare overnight they would be highly motivated to pass a health care bill.

To William Joseph Miller in LA -
You don’t fix a wound with an infected bandage. That’s what the HC bill was/is. No one is saying that something doesn’t have to be done to help those that are struggling. Everyone understands that there are many people that need help but not at the expense of others. Except the very few that are wealthy WE ARE ALL STRUGGLING AND TRYING TO MAKE OUR WAY THROUGH THIS MESS. People were upset because they were being forced to accept and eat slop. Are you aware that there was no provision that would prevent illegal’s from getting this coverage?
Are you aware that some of the funding was going to come from increasing the inheritance tax to 40%!!!
Are you aware that there was an amendment to this bill that would mandate congress from having the same coverage but it was voted down?
There’s so much more I do not have the time.
If this bill was supposed to be so great – why were so many states preparing to sue the Fed gov for violation of the 10th Amendment? Do you think it’s because they don’t want something good for their constituents and to solve their states problems? Are you kidding me, can you at least take some time and read the many comments and open your mind and stop following like a sheep.

Most people have overlooked that people under Medicare, Medicaid, Tri-Care, Tri-Care for Life, VA medicine and Public Health already face limited health care under the Stimulus Law (P.L. 111-5 dated 17 February 2009. All you have to go to is the Stealth Provisions written by former Senator Tom Dashle (from his book on health care and why we should adopt European Plans. The Commission, Under the direction of Secretary of H.E.W. shall establish the quality of health care which will be published in the Federal Register. Doctors must follow the quality of health care guidelines to be paid under the afore mention plans. People the DEATH COMMISSION is already law! Congress was rush to pass the stimulus plan with these provisions in the law. They did not know what they were voting for. Only a few knew! Shame on the Democrats, Senators Snowe, Collins and Spector for supporting this Law!

Loraine: Your VA care is costing taxpayers WAY more than it should because contractors rip of the gov’t with no oversight. I don’t have health insurance at all, but I sure don’t want anything that walks, talks or smells like Obamacare. Try letting us buy insurance across state lines, for a start. Why is that so HARD? And just saying “statistics show” proves nothing. You can make stats say anything you want, depending on how you word the question. Please, Wake up, doll.

I wonder when we’ll find out who was responsible for killing or delaying healthcare. I think, primarily, the insurance companies have pumped millions into anti-reform efforts and got people out there to scream and yell about Obamacare. Back a year ago, 60% or more were for reform. Maybe it was hubris to think reform could be done in a horrible year for our economy. Maybe Democrats have to hue to different priorities when they rear their ugly heads. But, in the end, the forces of the status quo won out.

No, the Dems will never wake up. Obama is a throw back to Jimmy Carter, whose social programs cost this country billions, for absolutely no gain, whatsoever.
Under Carter, taxes were high, interest rates were through the roof (the highest in my lifetime), it was difficult for anyone to buy a home, and those were the positives, of his administration.
Obama, needs to learn the same lesson….you cannot give away the country, in the name of helping the poor. The poor must be willing to make the effort, to help themselves. If they are not willing to make the effort, then no amount of social programs will matter. They will still be shiftless, lazy, and worthless people, looking for a handout.
There are not enough of the super rich, to tax, to offset the social programs for the poor. That means, all social programs, basically tax the middle class, who are simply trying to provide a decent home and opportunity for their families. They make the effort, and to take from them, to support those who refuse to make the effort, is simply wrong.
Further, those who have sought to do good in foreign countries, and do nothing in the US, to help the poor, here, are the pathetic ones. If they won’t put Americans first, then they shouldn’t be in America. America has plenty of poor to be helped.
Now we see all this effort to help those who do nothing to help themselves, in Haiti. The US cannot support the world. The world must assume some responsibility for themselves.

Too little, too late. Hey, I’m an independent guy who sees some value in the ideas both parties have to offer. Obama paid lip service to just this kind of constituent and he was elected. But where in God’s green earth was Obama last Summer when Americans all over the country were driven to screaming at their townhalls because no-one was listening? But worse yet, in the echos of a mad electorate, Obama and his Congressional leaders are participating in blattant bribery and corruption behind closed doors? I would go to jail for doing the same. So suddenly seeing the light seems a bit disengenuous. Integrity is a precious possession that is hard earned and equally hard recovered when compromised. Nope, this one is not your vanilla political mistake. And for those who voted for President Obama, it leaves one feeling a bit foolish.

By the way, ABC, where have you been for the last 12 months as this whole mess was allowed to fester without a peep from your “unbiased” reporters? Might want to write a companion article: ” Will The Main Stream Media Ever Wake Up”.

William Joseph Miller,
Fair question. I think you will find a vast majority of Independents and some moderate Republicans actually believe Healthcare Reform is needed. But what started as a noble cause, turned into a total goat rope, with corrupt deals being cut for supposed leaders like Ben Nelson, the esteemed lady from Louisianna and the Unions. We should all be mad as hell at both parties. Democrats let greed and power mongering eclypse the need reasonable reform. Republicans were pure obstructionist, although with the corrupt backroom deals that were going on, they actually did us all a service. The whole healthcare reform discussion is now pure poison, trust is gone, and we have Congress and the President to thank for a major loss for the people. This one is ugly and it knows no party. We needed reform, but our leaders selfishness and self serving behavior let us down. And it should have been obvious when the exempted themselves from the final solution.

Oh now Evan Bayh wants the Democrats to
wake up. Where was he when a handful
of conservative Democrats, including
him, held the healthcare reform bill
hostage in the Senate, until it got so
watered down it’s no where as good as
the House bill which, of course, won’t
be passed.

The American people have been sold a bill of goods. Most of those who oppose the president’s health care program are acting against their own best interests, and they’ll end up with the same lousy health care system they’ve suffered with for 100 years.
The “chorus of dissent” did not start at the grass roots. It started in the corporate board rooms. The anti-reform, anti-government, anti-Obama propaganda machine was funded and promoted by fat-cat Republican interests (mainly the health care and pharmaceutical industry) spread so many lies with such frequency that ordinary people were misled to believe that “there must be something to it.” It’s the “Big Lie” principle in action. It worked for Hitler; it worked for Lenin; and it works for the likes of Glenn Beck, Sarah Palin and Rush Limbaugh. If you tell a lie that’s big enough and outrageous enough, people will eventually think it must be true, at least some of it, because nobody would say such a thing if it weren’t true.

Will Democrats Ever Wake Up?One might say the same thing about the Republicans. We have a lot of comments about Democrats not doing their jobs. A one sided comment as far as I can see. What will a good health care system cost in this country?
What does health care cost now? With high co-pay a family of four pays about 1200.00 a month for a health plan not counting copay amounts. A low cost system is possible so where is it? I will tell you it is stuck in Congress and Senate by do nothing Republican and paid off politicans. Americans need to demand more of there Representatives in Washington. It is time.
