Groom Says Bearded Bride Duped Him
EmailABC's Lama Hasan reports from Cairo: Ah weddings. Usually they conjure up images of a beautiful, gushing bride decked out in her finest gown and jewels. Usually being the operative word here because that was not the case for one Arab ambassador in the United Arab Emirates. The ambassador got more than he bargained for when he found out that his niqab-wearing wife-to-be was cross eyed and sporting a not-so-fashionable beard. You may be wondering why he failed to find out this crucial bit of information? The ambassador claims that when they were courting she had her entire face covered. It was only after their marriage contract had been signed that he leaned in to kiss her and made the discovery. So what’s a groom to do when he finds out that the lady in question is not to his liking? Why, call off the marriage, of course. The Gulf News website reports that the ambassador reneged the marriage contract after claiming he was deceived and duped into marrying another woman. His mother had reportedly been shown pictures of the bride’s sister: it was an unfortunate case of mistaken identity. The ambassador has since sued saying he’s suffered emotional and moral damage and demanded that his former wife cough up $136,000 for the gifts he lavished her with including clothes and jewellery. But to add insult to injury, he even requested the court refer her to a specialist and check for hormonal deficiencies. The tests came back negative. Who said romance was dead?

Surely this is a joke. “He didn’t see her face before marriage”? I don’t believe it.By the way, what kind of a moron is he if the story is true and does he have a beard?

Anything is possible in the Arab world. Freedtoo, I don’t believe this is a joke, you must be vaguely aware that in the Mid-East, women are covered up as a matter of culture or religion (most Islamic countries so this is not unusual). Women are used to being treated like property; it is the way they are brought up. Of course, this was another arranged marriage, so I don’t doubt the story for a minute, although I find it very sad.

@Freedto – Did you miss the mention of a “arranged marriage”? it was just that(and is a practice common outside the West) – the marriage is arranged by parents/marriage prokers, and the couple rarely sees each other before the contract is made. In some countries (Asian mostly) the contract can be made early, while the bride and groom in question are still children – on other places it can be at any age. That is the case here – so stop being provincial and learn that the rest of the world is not Midwest USA.

Whether we like it or not, that’s the way it is in much of the world. I know tons of immigrants here who would practically die rather than see their kids marry a white (or black) American. “News of the Weird” had a story about a groom in Cairo who had seen his bride-to-be, but his mother-in-law put the bride’s ugly older sister’s name on the marriage contract. After he saw what the mother-in-law had done, he dived off his hotel balcony in Cairo and fell to his death.

That is so sad. I bet if the situation had been reversed and she found out he had a small penis on their wedding night they would not let her cancel the marriage.

John…I’m not from the Midwest USA! but what is Provincial about the Midwest anyway? Some of my good friends are from the Midwest and they certainly know about arranged marriages.I still don’t believe he didn’t see her beard before the ceremony, but thanks for the lecture.
