How De Niro Introduced Scorsese to DiCaprio
It's just one story legendary director Martin Scorsese and his actor apprentice Leonardo DiCaprio share with Cynthia McFadden in an interview scheduled to air tomorrow night. The two talk about "Shutter Island," the psychological thriller based on the Dennis Lehane novel in which DiCaprio plays a federal marshal investigating the disappearance of a woman who murdered her children at a psychiatric hospital for the criminally insane. It is their fourth project together, following "Gangs of New York," "The Aviator," and "The Departed."In the interview, Scorsese recounts the first time he watched DiCaprio act, in the 1993 film "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" (pictured above). It was another actor whose career Scorsese helped build — Robert De Niro of "Taxi Driver," "Raging Bull," "Goodfellas," and "Cape Fear" — who first told the director about the talented, then 16-year-old.Bye-bye "Growing Pains."Read a write-up of part of the interview by producer Karen Weinberg here. Will post the clip after tomorrow night's show.
