RIP Captain Phil Harris, ‘Deadliest Catch’
Captain Phil Harris, fisherman in charge of the Cornelia Marie on the popular Discovery Channel show "Deadliest Catch," passed away late yesterday nearly two weeks after suffering a stroke on Jan. 29. Harris was 53. Sons Jake and Josh Harris posted this statement to their father's Web site: "It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to our dad — Captain Phil Harris. Dad has always been a fighter and continued to be until the end. For us and the crew, he was someone who never backed down. We will remember and celebrate that strength. Thanks to everyone for their thoughts and prayers." Harris was featured in a "Nightline" profile that took you inside the dangerous world of Alaskan King Crab fishing in May 2008. You can see a part of the video by clicking here or the entire episode by clicking here. Embedded below is the "World News Now" report from the overnight on his death.

Lost my dad in May 0f 54. He was 43. He too was a fisherman and went down in Chesapeake Bay, VA.
I’m an old man now but the loss of Captain Phil has brought it all back to me as though it were yesterday. God may he rest in peace. He’s with the best.

My sincere condolences to Jake and Josh and the crew of the CM along with all of Capt. Phil’s friends and fellow crabbers. Phil was one of my favorites on the show. I worried for his health and that of many others on the show. The 30-hours at a stretch without sleep coupled with chain-smoking and can after can of energy drinks and pots of coffee. The human body just can’t handle that forever. I hope the other captains and crews will consider how to better care for their bodies. Again, may God bring comfort to all who knew Phil. He was far too young to leave this world so soon and will be missed.

My heart breaks for Jake & Josh and all of the Harris family as well as his many friends and the members of the Cornelia Marie. Your Dad and the Cornelia Marie were are favorite and we never missed an episode. I lost my Dad it will actually be 1 yr. this Feb.22. My Dad taught me the love of fishing, sailing and the ocean- no where the extreme as the Behring Sea but never the less a love of the sea as a little girl. Now that I am grown with a 3 yr old son of my own I have realized what a treasure it was that my Dad gave me. I truly wish this did not have to happen to you, but know this your old Man is always around you and with you. I hope this gives you some comfort to you & your family &friends. Also
know it was so apparent from watching the show that your Dad adored the both of you and will continue to make him proud. Again, I am so deeply sorry for your loss.

I have enjoyed Deadliest Catch since it first appeared on Discovery Channel. Captain Harris was the best. It will be hard to watch without Captain Harris barking orders ,downing red bull and having a cigarette burning. He faced death every time he went out to sea, and he died doing what he enjoyed. You can take the man away from the sea, but, you can’t take the sea out of the man. Jake and Josh so sorry for your loss.

I always loved the repartee between the captains when they would end the season and sit around and chat. Phil was especially friendly, and so obviously attached to his boys. When he had to sit out with the blood clot, we missed him so much. What a painful loss for all who knew him. He really did make us feel like we knew him. I wonder what the show will be like without his tender-but-tough sailor heart. My husband and I will sure miss you, Phil. Good luck, boys. I hope you get through this okay. RIP Captain Phil!

This is a terrible thing to happen. I truly feel the loss and I am extremely saddened to realize that my popular restaurant chain may likely see a hike in price of crab related menu items. I hope Josh and Jake are able to continue your legacy, and continue to provide bountiful crab to keep the going rates down.

Captain Harris, as a first mate myself, I have often had to rely to my Quaker values and Christianity to interpret the world around me. I’m infinitely glad you never let any madness set about you that caused a man I once new to capitulate on his sanity and choose revenge on animal that lacks reason. For this, I bid you a safe journey aboard the Pequod into the bosom of love. Sleep well, sweet prince.

Like the loss of sunlight
On a cloudy afternoon
Gone too soon
Like a castle
Built upon a sandy beach
Gone too soon
Like a perfect flower
That is just beyond your reach
Gone too soon
Born to amuse, to inspire, to delight
Here one day
Gone one night
Like a sunset
Dying with the rising of the moon
Gone too soon
May you rest in peace Captain Phil. We will all miss you, and my heart goes out to your sons.

Phil Harris may have died at the age of 53 but he packed more living into that short time span than most people who live to 100 do. Sure, he could have taken better care of himself – but then he wouldn’t have been Phil. And he wouldn’t have been remembered so well.

This is just the saddest news. My son and I watched the show from it’s very beginning. And these Captains and crews do become part of your family. I had even been thinking how they are filming the new season now, and I’m looking forward to seeing the new season of shows this summer. But, ya know it really won’t be the same without Phil Harris. Deepest sympathies to Captain Phil Harris’ family and friends.

Like all these other kind condolences I do feel much the same. It just came as a shock to me to find out this terrible news but it is reality like the countless shows of the Deadliest catch that i have watched so closely. I’m very sad to hear this news and I now know that even the toughest of people are not immortal. Thank you Phil for the first class crabbing experience brought to millions of us world wide, we surely enjoyed every moment of your kind but explosive personality and your willingness to teach your sons what it takes to survive on the high seas in the craziest of conditions. Josh and Jake you guys run with the torch now and you should both be very proud and grateful for your fallen hero, as we are.
Thank you captain Phil. . . it was a great Voyage.

I’ve had few hero’s in my life, John Wayne, Dale Earnhart, Phil Harris. I’m sure a moment of silence and a prayer for a Man’s Man, is in order here.

I am so terribly sorry to hear about the passing of Captain Phil. My husband and I watch World’s Deadliest Catch faithfully, and always adored Captain Phil, and watching him interact with his sons. He was an amazing fisherman, Captain, mentor, and father. We will miss him, and his candid ways and sense of humor. Rest in Peace Phil. When I found out yesterday, it brought me to tears. I felt like I had lost a close friend. Capt. Phil wasn’t just a fisherman or a guy on TV; he was a great friend, a wonderful father and most of all, a fearless fighter. I never met him in person but I’m sure everyone can agree that he has found his way into the hearts of so many thousands of people across the country. My sympathies go out to Josh and Jake… I can’t even imagine what you’re going through. Just know that he’s not in pain anymore. God Bless.

It is a difficult time for the Harris family now,and all our thoughts and prayers are with you. We became loyal fans shortly after the show started and still remain.Jake and Josh your Dad was very proud of you both it always showed on his face.
We had the pleasure of meeting Capt’s Andy and Johnathon a few moths ago in Penna and they spoke highly of Capt’s Phil we enjoyed spending time with them and will always remember that it would have been great also if Capt Phil was there.
We hope you continue to live out your Dads life time commitment to fishing.
We hope to one day spend time with the Capt’s again and maybe you both will join them.
We cherish the jacket Andy signed for me and the shirt that Johnathon drew a picture of the jolly rodger on. Jake and Josh * Fish on!
God Bless Capt Phil and may he rest in peace.

its odd how a show like “deadlest” has such a strong affect on people. people you have never and may never meet come to seem like members of your own family and when you loose one its a devestating loss.
jake reminds me so of my youngest son and i loved all the relationships phil had with all of his family and crews.
i and my family pray for the family, crew and friends of capt. phil.

Makes me laugh so hard,”You ant a man tell u pull a tooth with a plyer” was a good one too.God Bless the Harris family and be strong cause Phil would want us all to be strong.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
Phil, you have brought so much meaning of family to the viewers of your show.
I grew up with a dad who was a fishing junkie and we would hate to go out with him on 15-foot rollers on the Great Lakes a 4am to catch salmon trout or perch or whatever, but now as an adult I really (really) miss it. We would dock in Port Austin, MI and show up in church at St. Michael’s on Sunday morning with blood and guts and scales on our clothes and skin and in our hair to go to mass and then go out for more but nobody even gave us a second glance. Josh and Jake, I know you are grieving a terrible loss but I hope you can cling to the comfort of knowing that you accompanied your Dad on the trips of his life, because as much as you have enjoyed doing what you have done, I know in my heart that your Dad enjoyed having you two share that with him. It was very apparent that he loved what he did. Once the love of the water is in your soul, it never goes away. My heart is breaking for you in any case. Anyone could see he was a teddy bear, even though he liked to growl like a grizzly sometimes. Please know that I am praying for your family so that you can deal with your loss.

I have been addicted to “Deadliest Catch” since episode #1 Capt. Phil Harris was my favorite skipper. He somehow pulled off the VERY dangerous positions of crab boat Captain, and fisherman. On top of that, he had a ready smile and was a bit of a jokester at heart. We will all miss his humor, his wisdom, and a all-around great guy. I pray for Josh and Jake. I know that God will look after his two sons and help them remember the good times. We have all lost a good guy. God Bless.

I truly am sorry for your lose. Your father was a great captain and a great man. I will miss seeing him on the Cornelia Marie, smoking at the helm and teasing you boys. So much of what he did reminded me of my father who I lost when I was only 12. You were very lucky to have had the opportunity to work along side him as long as you did. He is, I’m sure very proud of you both, as are we all.

The thing that touched us most about Captain Phil Harris of the C.M. was how completly human and real he was to us. A real man with real problems trying to be the best Captain and the best man and father he could be. He loved his sons his boat and his crew. The other captains seemed to look up to Phil with his earthy tatooed wisdom. He was so easy to relate to, a real father trying to inspire his sons to grow up and be strong enough to make it without him. RestEasy dear old friend. All will be well.

Our deepest sympathy to the family for their loss. During these hard times, it was excellent that he shared his work and experiences with his sons. Thank you for allowing us, the public, to see into your lives through the show. We love the show and we loved this family, one that stood by each other through their differences and through illness. God Bless and Be Safe.
