Super Sunday: Does Obama Have the Votes?
After a year of debate and protest and partisan sniping — a vote is finally expected on sweeping health care reform Sunday. The outcome will likely rest among undecided House Democrats, whom President Obama will personally lobby tomorrow. As of tonight, the tally is nearly a straight split, with 212 House members voting "yes" or leaning in that direction; and 212 voting "no" or leaning in that direction. The bill needs 216 House votes to pass. The president is not the only one making his opinion known — calls to House members by the electorate were coming in today at more than 100,000 per hour. So tonight, we ask you: Do you think President Obama is doing enough to get his health reform bill passed? Tell us what you think. Embedded below is Jon Karl's "World News" report on the subject.

WE DO NOT WANT THIS HEALTHCARE REFORM! How dare they ask us to line their pockets further? This package doesn’t affect one person in Congress! They’re too far removed from the people to really know and care what their constituents want – and we’re the ones who hired these people?? Pushing their own agenda of socialism through without a vote?? Socialism at its absolute finest – NO WAY! WE ARE AMERICANS LIVING IN A DEMOCRACY, AND AS AMERICANS WE MUST STAND UP AND SAY “NO” AS LOUDLY AS WE CAN, AS LONG AS IT TAKES, UNTIL THEY FINALLY HEAR US AND STOP THIS INSANITY!

This is not health care reform. Insurance has nothing to do with health care. What is being shoved down the Americans throats is unconstitutional. This is no different than saying I need to smoke cigarettes. I do not choose either. Thank you very much!!! Insurance is a consumer product. Get the Doctors, Hospitals and drug companies in line. My husband needs a particular medicine. His Dr. prescribed it and the insurance company said no. They act as God and the Doctor. It’s a rip off…. Let’s do real reform……

I sure wish these propaganda wielding republicans would stop using the term “The American People” as if my and half the rest of the country are not Americans. I guess that goes back to the sole root of this fight though. The republicans simply do not care for their fellow man. First you wanna wage war on other countries and let their people die and now us? I doubt jesus would want to save your malicious souls – you scoff at the very fact of helping your fellow man. Disgusting. Simply Disgusting. Go make some more batman posters and prance around like idiots – This bills going to pass and 32 MILLION Americans (along with the rest of us that are fortunate enough to actually have insurance) Will be having the last laugh come election time. I can’t wait to see how real scholars portray you in history’s books (assuming you don’t corrupt those with even more propaganda for our children).

No to this Obama care. This man is a liar and a hate munger. The liberals and democrats are blind and will not see the truth. If you vote for this bill you are not American. True Americans want freedom and self responsibility.

ABC is asking the wrong question. Obama and co bribed, berated and extorted votes yet still could not get their MAJORITY to vote for this monstronsity without resorting to procedural tricks (reconciliation). And when even that couldn’t make a bad bill palatable to *their own people* they fall back on attempting to “deem” it passed even though that’s blatantly unconstitutional.
And remember that under even the most conservative estimates, this plan costs a trillion dollars over TEN years but only gives benefits for SIX years. (And that’s only with some highly questionable accounting that was provided to the CBO). ABC … you should be all over this instead of asking “Oh, do you think we have the votes?” What a softball question.
The question that needs asking is WHY haven’t ABC, NBC and the rest of the media been outraged (or even critical) over these thuglike tactics? Why are they continually downplaying legitimate criticism of these tactics and acting as Obama/Pelosi lapdogs? Why aren’t they covering the fact that even the CBO cannot keep up with the different versions of this bill but dems are going to ram it through without public support and without the votes to pass it openly and honestly. Crickets?? The network I loved and supported no longer exists. I’m ashamed of you ABC. I don’t need you to skew conservative … but I do ask you to at least REPORT both sides of the story in equal fashion.

This healthcare bill is just another social welfare bill that is going to cost this country until the end of the world. Worse, the government will use the IRS to fine and penalize offenders. Every deal is made by the Democratic elites behind close doors. The number from CBO is fudged to make their case. Hey, this is America….anyone who vote “Yes” on this bill should be judged in November by their constituents. Nancy Pelosi is trying to shield them from the public. So much for transparency! Post their names on websites so they can be judged and “vote these bums out of office” for defiance of the will of the people.
We are going to balloon our national deficit. Someone is going to pay for this bill and I wouldn’t be surprised if the insurance premiums go up as well as our future taxes.

Yes, it is time, and it will pass. In spite of the lies and brainwashing by the Republicans and the conservative haters who have everything in their power to ruin this presidency and this once-great country. When this bill passes and only good things come of it, the Republicans and their lemming followers will be again exposed for the greedy and immature bunch they really are.
And as for the Right crying over hardball tactics: if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Freakin’ hypocrites.

This country was founded on the belief that we have the unalienable rights of Life, liberty & the pursuit of happiness.
REQUIRING health insurance can be construed as nothing other than a tax on life.
Corporations would be exempt from this tax as they are not alive. If this is not a tax on life, then why not require this tax on corporations?
I don’t want the government involved with my medical decisions. Why do they think they know better than i, what is best for me?
I have not heard of any benefits (cost or customer service wise) of the “Universal coverage” socialist countries that make their systems better than what we have. The government’s track record on organizations that interface with us all is terrible – think USPS, IRS or the various DMV’s. Want the line at the emergency room to look like the room at the DMV? Not i.
If the Medicare system is broke & rife with waste, fix it FIRST, before expanding it!
Expanding it before or at the same time as trying to fix it will only complicate the fixing process. FIX MEDICARE FIRST. then trying to sell the expansion will be an easier sell. Expanding it first will only allow more of our money to be wasted!
If the insurance companies actually had a product that made fiscal sense, requiring people to buy it wouldn’t be required. REQUIRING insurance is a TAX ON LIFE!
The actions of the congress & the senate on this matter has been atrocious! Instead of trying to pass laws that address all men equally, this 2,000 odd pages of this bill appears to be a medical bailout bill for 1,001 special interest groups.
The President, Senate & Congress have done a better job (and spent more time) trying to sell this crap than they did of designing the bill. Adding a specific item for each vote they want, does not yield the same bill as adding one item that the majority can vote for.
The following two complaints were recorded against King George in our Declaration of independence:
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has combined with others to subject us to a jurisdiction foreign to our constitution, and unacknowledged by our laws…
Sound familiar Obama, Reid & Pelosi?
You swore to uphold the Constitution, which derived its legitimacy from the Declaration of Independence. Taxing the unalienable right to Life?? Shame

Interesting comments coming from the “no” side. They post, “Americans Don’t want this!” Um. Hello? THIS American wants this.
Also, “the CBO is fudging the numbers!” Sure they are. There’s always a conspiracy involved with anything that doesn’t go your way.
And, “it’s too costly!” Not according to the CBO, which of course is involved in that conspiracy thing. Right.
More fallacies from the anti-health-care side:
Appeal to Fear: Gov’t corruption, kill grandma, Socialism.
Appeal to Popularity: Surveys are great – as long as they “prove” your own position, and “Americans don’t want this.”
Appeal to Tradition – We need to get back to “traditional” values (whatever they are).
Poisoning the Well – “Obamacare”, “Pelosicare”, …
Red Herring – The bill is over 2000 pages long!!!!
Relativist Fallacy – I’ve never had a problem with health care, so there is no problem.
Slippery Slope – “Gov’t take over” (it’s really not) will bankrupt us! (Not according to the CBO.)
But, in all the time the Republicans use these (and other) fallacies, they’ve never really had a coherent, actionable, believable set of proposals that could be called a “bill”. Oh, there were some proposals that were good, and were put into this bill. But on the whole, the Republican leadership just dropped the ball on this one. For decades (this isn’t new), they just sat on their hands, watching the train at the station. Then, once the train actually left the station, they expected it to stop, come back, and star over – just for them.
Look, Republicans can bluster all they want. The fact is, there are existing models for this in other countries. It’s not new. It’s even been shown that it’s not perfect. But the positives have been PROVEN to outweigh the negatives. AND there’s nothing in the US Constitution that prevents this, or reconciliation, or deem-and-pass.
Get over it Republicans, the silent majority has spoken (as opposed to the loud minority). HCR will pass.
Your Tea-Party mind tricks don’t work on us.

Absolutely not. He sat on his can for 15 months and did not get moving soon enough. The concept of a single-payer, universal, nationalized healthcare system with no greedy insurance company involvment got lost in the bedlam of the last 15 months. That was the reform that was needed.
We The People are not sure at this point whether Obama’s plan makes things better or worse. It has not been explained to us properly. We just do not know what it is, after all the bedlam.

Speak for yourself when you say “we” do not want it! A better expression would be “I” or my family does not want it. You really are only able to speak for yourself just like me. If I used your logic, then I can counter with WE DO WANT IT, because I do want it! Do I think that the bill is the best it can be? NO! Obamas intent was to allow each of us to have access to health care without restrictions to factors which we often can’t control. Example being a pre-existing condition. To have health care like that which our elected officials have and enjoy. Along the way towards that goal, however, his originally proposed plan has been forced to change and compromise. Expected by all. It has been altered to serve various interests, watered down (single payer option removed), ridiculed, sabotaged and all but stopped by opposing parties who for their own selfish gains want it derailed at all cost! He campaigned on that issue and a MAJORITY of Americans put him in the WHITE HOUSE. He has endured incredible obstacles, placed before him by special interest groups and lobbies who have used every means at their disposal to defeat this important to America bill! The reality is that many of the VERY people (House members) who are currently entrusted with this incredibly important decision/vote CAN NOT really relate. They ALREADY HAVE the best health care insurance available, and don’t want to share access. A better scenario (to level the playing field with constituents in need) would be to have each of them give up their privilages of insurance for say a year or more, lower their pay to that of the average currently struggling American, take away access to their sheltered money and randomly assign health or illness to each. Following which, then, and only then, allowing a vote on behalf of their constituents. That vote would represent the reality that a constituent faces. If the vote was no I could accept it with a greater understanding. UNTIL such time comes (I know it never will) I ask as a citizen and VOTER that they vote YES to the passage of the Health Care Reform Bill. If we can FIND and SPEND 1 (one) BILLION DOLLARS of American taxpayers money to ensure that EVERY man, woman and child in Afghanistan is provided with health care coverage surely the American people deserve the same! Each of us faces loss of employer provided coverage or self insurance status due to circumstances we can not many times control (loss of job, extended illness or change of employment to one that does not offer benefits). Those who have it and are urging you to vote no, are just as much in jeopardy of loss of coverage. House Representatives please REMEMBER that all those who want the bill to PASS VOTE TOO!!! Have COURAGE to support and PASS this bill! It is RIGHT for America and its people!

Barack Obama is the worst thing that’s ever happened to this nation.
There are no words that can accurately express what a horrible excuse for a human being he is.
Hell has a special place waiting just for him.

“Enough?”
No one wants it!
It is unconstitutional and horrific meddling in every family’s budgeting process! Congress is so arrogant and elitist to think yhey know best what each and every one of us “can afford” and and should do. What has happened to America?

I truly cannot understand why Republicans are so emotional over every issue, whether it be abortion or healthcare or whatever. They are mostly crazy zealots for all I can tell – wishing harm on our president – ranting and raving about “who” is American and who is Socialist? Are they the victims of too much Rush Limbaugh or hours of watching Fox News? Why can’t they ever rationally discuss an issue without the name calling??
They “require” me to have Car insurance so why shouldn’t I be required to have health insurance. I’m tired of paying your bill when you go to the emergency room because they “have” to treat you there whether you have money or not. Guess what – the line at MY emergency room already looks like the line at the DMV because that’s where poor people go to get treatment for a cold! Five years from now, Republicans will be taking credit for the one line in the bill that they actually agreed with and saying they were for insurance reform all along!

Gee, if only the zealots would have thrown up such a fuss when Bush and Co. were busy ginning up a couple of trillion dollar wars. Are we really supposed to believe they care about fiscal responsibility? Don’t they realize how silly they sound getting up in arms about furnishing health insurance to the uninsured when they helped march us into two fruitless wars with nary a whimper? Please Americans, I realize many of you don’t believe in book learnin’ but try not to sound quite so stupid. It makes us all look bad.

Its just so funny how hard this is bill is being forced down our throats. There is no bipartisanship. If there is one thing I have learned it is that there are no free lunches. Getting something for nothing was never the creators plan or the founding fathers. The main problem with “FREE.” If we already are losing our wills to work hard as a country what will this do for us? As far as I am concerned it will only make things worse. Second of all, nothing is ever free forever. This bill will cause great problems that will effect generations to come.
I’m for healthcare reform but not this way. Especially not with all the special deals to buy off votes. Thats corruption.

Lets get this insurance reform done, its a good bill. Then we can start working on a public option.

If this socialist healthcare plan passes, I’m going to quit my job and go on the dole and tell everyone to do the same. I’m going to start the ‘pajama party’. Why go to work everyday when I can just go on the dole and get all these freebees. Unfortunately, if people like me stop working, where do the rubes think they are going to get the money to pay for all this stuff. I don’t understand why people are no longer required to take care of themselves. When did America become socialist? Taxation without representation is alive a well and the governement could care less about the American people. This bill is outrageous in everyway and the fact that they are ram rodding it down our throats only emphasizes the fact that they don’t want anyone looking too close at the details. The American people will really suffer for this and I incourage everyone to stop paying into the beast.

I think this is horrible! I cant believe those who support this bill do you no the facts i dont think so. This bill goes against everything this country stands for and no one can deny that. If you want universal health care go to a different country because this is the United States

What a display of willful ignorance in this comments section.
The American people don’t want health reform but without health reform they do *want* their premiums to skyrocket, do they?
They want to be arbitrarily dropped from their coverage?
They want their kids to never be insured, ever?
They want to be denied coverage based on the insurance scam of “denied because of a pre-existing condition”?
They want to have a $65,000 health insurance deductible, as one woman shared that she and husband currently have.
They want seniors to continue to fall into the Medicare Part D doughnut hole, which means they can’t afford their medicines?
And on and on.
Don’t speak for me (an American person) in saying I *want* these things. When health reform passes, these will be the things none of us ever have to worry about again.
And I thank the Democratic Party and President Obama for making it happen.

everybody likes to talk about “the majority,” without mentioning the caveat that the majority of americans are poorly informed and not capable of voting in their own interests. the political system has been so corrupted by the rich and powerful that most americans cannot even use democracy to help improve their lives. and the education system–also broken–is a handmaiden to the corrupt elites.
