Will Obama’s Big Health Care Push Work?

President Obama — with several whitecoat professionals as his backdrop, pictured above – said today that the time for talk about health care reform is over. The ideas and arguments have been laid out, by both Democrats and Republicans, and now it's time to act, the president implored.  "I believe the United States Congress owes the American people a final vote on health care reform," he said. The president, however, may not have the votes to pass the legislation, which he claims will cover the uninsured, lower costs and end what he called the "worst practices" of insurance companies. So tonight, we ask: Do you think this final, aggressive push by Obama will give birth to a health care bill? Tell us what you think. Embedded below is the president's announcement from earlier today.

User Comments

The current bills start collecting $$$ many years before it would start any “coverage”. This concerns me that costs will actually go up, not down. This and the fact that there are no metrics of measuring the cost savings (or increases) and additionally no provision to cancel the “program or law” if it is found to actually do the opposite of its intended results. The president has certainly not convinced me of the logic of bills because I remember the flood insurance take over by the federal government in circa 1970 .. this insurance takeover has been a financial disaster; health care insurance is many, many times greater in size. Such a burden on us would likely lead to war from the instability.

I am against the health care push by President Obama. It is a move against the people, not by the people, and not for the better good of The People. I do not want our country to embrace socialism. We are on a slippery slope to a one world order. God help us!

If Obama’s healthcare takeover passes America’s downhill descent will accelerate faster than the olympics’ downhill skiers.

I think they should go forward & get health care reform. I think it’s time to quit playing politics & put we Americans ahead of getting re-elected by using fear about our budget. I think Obama is willing to do that. We have billions to send other countries to take care of their people & it’s time we take care of our own.

Posted by: Bonnie | March 4, 2010, 12:24 am 12:24 am

I think Obama is pushing too hard and too fast we need more time to study the reform. Where is he getting the money for this health reform? I don’t want to pay higher taxes.

About the only thing that we can NOT do is to do nothing. Every good executive knows that it is necessary to make decisions. If they are good ones — great. If they are bad ones, correct them as quickly as possible.
Our health care system is broken for those that have it — and not available for way too many. We need to start the process of fixing it. If some of the specifics of this plan don’t work well — fix them as that is known.

Do i think it’s gonna work? Yes.
Do I think it’s good for the country or even for my own family? NO! And to be clear, my wife is a teacher who’s pension is being looked at to be cut out in order to balance the IL books & I’m unemployed. We’re as blue-collar as it gets with our 3 month old baby.

I do not want this to pass!!! We are in a world of hurt if it does…this is not for the people…it’s HIS agenda…he wants to make history and the people are talking, but he’s not listening!!!

I am totally against Obama’s health care reform. We need LESS government in our lives, not MORE.

Posted by: Diane | March 4, 2010, 12:40 am 12:40 am

It’s sad that Americans think the US could actually go full blown socialist. Our system, though not entirely stable, is one of the best in the world and everyone knows it both abroad and here at home. So don’t worry, no one in the government wants to stop capitalism. The health-care program is a supplement to our current lifestyle, not a step towards an absolute override of our way of life. Get real!!!

Posted by: Bo | March 4, 2010, 12:41 am 12:41 am

PS Did I mention that I’m unempressed with Obama’s lack of leadership on the issue that’s been hijacked not by Dems, but by the liberal wing of the Dem party which purposely has alienated the R’s from the debate in order to make it seem as if the R’s are ONLY interested in political points. They both are! Because they’ve decided to go it alone from the beginning (looking for one lonely R to call it bi-partisan), the Dems have backed themselves into a corner on the issue. So now they either have to eat crow and go back to the beginning or use a 50+1 tactic to get the thing passed. Pathetic Mr President!

Posted by: josh | March 4, 2010, 12:43 am 12:43 am

It’s disappointing that the President has decided to disregard the American people. I’m so sick of politicians living outside the reality of the voters that I could puke. When will it end?

Obama care?Dear God I hope NOT.USA has the BEST healthcare in the world and nobody should mess with it.There should be NO death pannels,no abortion funding and NO Gov takeover of our healthcare.EVER

Posted by: S.L.Y.one | March 4, 2010, 12:43 am 12:43 am

I’ve recently once again had the opportunity to observe our government at work “up close and personal” as an independent contractor. The amount of waste and inefficiency takes my breath away. The paperwork alone is astonishing. To think of the government “managing” healthcare scares me to death. The bureaucratic redtape and costs will be astronomical. Anyone who thinks this will produce a cost savings to anyone is dreaming–big time dreaming.
As for the tactic President Obama is planning to employ to get his way, I say if you really want an “up and down vote” why don’t you ask the general American public for their vote rather than representatives who are strong armed to vote along party lines? Oh, and lets also tell them how much their healthcare would REALLY cost if the government runs it.

Posted by: dk | March 4, 2010, 12:46 am 12:46 am

Let’s take HC reform slowly. If they make mistakes Congress will not correct the problems. Observe SS and Medicare. We should start with reducing the COST of medicine. ie. the use of emergency rooms, malpractice insurance, and interstate competition.
We cannot afford a legacy for BHO to match FDR and LBJ.

america, wake up. you voted for change, but are afraid of it. p-obama;s health plan will work and we will all be better off because of it.as for themoney, every time we go to war or help some country, we have the money,so why can’t we for once have the money to pay for us-the united states of america.let’s fix us for once and dam the cost-amen.

Posted by: tommy | March 4, 2010, 12:56 am 12:56 am

All I know is polls show people do not want this health care reform bill and Democrats don’t care.
I find it very odd that poll after poll shows that the American people do not want this bill, yet we have Obama and the Democrats telling us they are doing this “for the American people”.
I am not sure who the American people are, that the Democrats are talking about!

Posted by: Heather | March 4, 2010, 12:57 am 12:57 am

What a charade, weren’t the lab coats just the ticket to convince us this monstrous bill is just what we need?
Let’s do a fact check, wasn’t the bill supposed to control healthcare costs and cut the deficit/debt? However, the CBO expects my premiums to increase should the bill become law. the CBO also predicts the bill to cost more than the status-quo over the next decade.
In the face of a national debt swiftly approaching the ceiling of $14.3 trillion (the second ceiling in the past few months) and a well kept secret that the government’s unfunded liabilities are actually some $60 to $70 trillion shouldn’t someone be developing a crisis plan to resolve these issues?
Isn’t Obamacare a moot point if the nation crashes and the dollars of the 60% that is financing the nanny state are bust?
Obama is rather arrogant to push his agenda as the ship sinks!
My message to my representative was:
In his arrogance the president seems to think the congress works for him instead of the respective constituencies.
The massive Obamacare package is worthy of nothing but the trash at this point. the CBO has stated that my insurance premiums are likely to go up if it is enacted. The CBO also indicates that the bill would cost more than the status quo over the next decade instead of saving money.
The only right thing to do is to vote against the bill, and against Obama’s arrogance!

Obama knows that his time is short. He knows that the American people will soon vote him and his dictator-loving, big government bullies out of office. Obama, like the lunatic captain aboard a burning ship is trying to do as much damage as he can.
Obama ought to be impeached now. He has violated the oath that he took when he was sworn into office.
God Bless America, the American people and the Republic. May we be granted the wisdom to preserve it for many generations to come!

Evidently people on this post are the picture of Health…Let’s pray you all stay that way! I hope you all listened to the Presidents speech as well before posting anything! As for myself, I have what President Obama is pushing for. I pray you all good health in the future!

I agree with much of his plan but as is stated before, I think it is too much, too fast. His efforts are noble and real, but there are some very intelligent Republicans who explained why step-by-step is better. I’m not Democrat or Republican, but a Moderate, who believes that both sides have valid points.
For instance, going after the big chunk of health care costs by tackling Medicare fraud, malpractice suits, and capping healthcare premiums. And get that bit passed FIRST with (hopefully) more bipartisan and people support. THEN, maybe try to expand MediCaid, regulate health care companies more, etc. In a system that has taken decades to ravel itself, it is too hasty to try to unravel it in one year. Go after the big cost-effective regulations first, then once you win over the minds of the people, you can try to carry over other regulation.

Regardless of what happens, I believe this country does have the best healthcare in the world – and whatever mistakes we make along the way, I know America will find a way to adapt and overcome. I would still never want to live anywhere else in the world.

Shred your Supermarket Club Cards and pay cash for any food that Uncle Sam might consider unhealthy, lest your premiums get a massive hike.
Forced health insurance is unconstitutional. Furthermore, forcing us to buy a product from a PRIVATE company is insane. What’s next, mandatory health club membership? Will gym membership costs skyrocket as a result? I can exercise without paying money, thank you very much! I put money in a savings account instead of buying insurance, and pay cash for QUALITY healthcare outside of the USA for pennies on the dollar if I get sick.
The current health care plans are a giant PLACEBO SUPPOSITORY I am not willing to PAY to have have inserted! This is nothing more than a preemptive bailout of a broken, failed health care industry.

Posted by: Gak | March 4, 2010, 2:19 am 2:19 am

I think it is time to get on with the reform. Medicare has been working out the bugs for years now, starting over will take years to get where Medicare is now. Cutting back a little on senior’s coverage will give us more money to cover the children and young adults who have a huge job ahead of them to support the large upcoming senior population. Insurances need to be policed as execs are making mega bucks and where did all the money come from so they could lobby like they are doing? Possibly premiums?

Posted by: Btoenies | March 4, 2010, 2:35 am 2:35 am

He’s finished. He has split the country down the middle, and he has lost the moderates he needs to govern.
The GOP will pick up seats, just by not being associated with him, and he will clash and fight against windmills since he doesn’t know how to negotiate with the other side of the aisle.
I would not want to be Pelosi or Reid after the midterms. His supporters will blame them, they will blame Obama, and the GOP will look sane by comparison.
Either way we are in for a long, hard, slog… With less money, more taxes, more unfunded mandates, and more taxation without representation from our reps in Washington DC.
We fought a war over a tax on tea… And yet the American people cheer those who indebt them, enslave them, give their children a 3rd rate education, no unemployment, and if that isn’t enough, send them off to fight in illegal wars.
Did I go back in time. Is it the 1970′s again? Is Jimmy Carter STILL in office. What the HELL is going on around here!?!

Just the profits that the health insurance companies make are enough to fund Medicare Part “E” (for EVERYONE) and Full Drug, Full Dental and Full Eye care. Part “E” would give care to all 40 million currently going without now easily. As in the rest of the civilized world profiting from healthcare must be made a crime here in America. If not Part “E” the only other choose is “private nonprofit only”, which will be abused by the corporations incharge. Medicare works use it please.

Yes, I am for the health care bill passing. Obama has more than tried to get all to participate in the plan. We must reform health care and now is the time.

Posted by: Scott | March 4, 2010, 3:23 am 3:23 am

You people are conspiracy theorist wingnuts. The bill is straightforward. It will work. Republicans proposed an almost identical approach under Clinton. The only reason they oppose it now is they know people are frustrated with Washington and they can capitalize on that.
PASS THE DAMN BILL ALREADY AND MOVE ON.
If the Dems are so spineless as to not finish this, they will be wiped out in November. By contrast, if it passes, all the conspiracy theorists will be proven wrong and the Dems will be quite stable.
GET IT DONE.

Obamacare will likely end up as the biggest train robbery of the American public. Its front loaded for the first 5 years of paying for it with no benefits until after the first 5 years, so in the 6th year when it starts its cost is double what he’s saying..
The promise to insure 30 to 40 million Americans currently uninsured for less than the current cost is a huge lie. Health care standards are going to go way down if this albatross goes into law. The USPS, DMV, IRS, Medicare, Fannie Mae etc..(there all bankrupt) there isn’t any government operation that works efficiently, and now they want to take over 25% of our economy with this. HMO’s were started in the Clinton years & they’ve been a disaster. Obama is killing off the private sector and borrowing from china to subsidize the public sector. He destroying the middle class and burying the USA. Beware of any politician selling this kind of panacea.
Funny that the Senate, Congress, and the president exempted themselves from this plan. I guess it good for the sheep but not for them.

This thing has nothing to do with the Medical Profession (Health Care). Is all about the payback for campaign contributions from Insurance Corporations. As stated by President Obama Proposal, “Like the drug industry, the health insurance industry stands to gain as more Americans get coverage. (page 10). The medical device industry also stands to gain from expanding health insurance coverage. (page 10). Both policies will result in new revenue for the pharmaceutical industry. (page 9)”. If this passes, SUCKERS. More Suckers for the Insurance Corporations to deny medical treatments (their job to make profits) more money in, less money out.

Posted by: david393071 | March 4, 2010, 4:41 am 4:41 am

Americans want cheaper health care! We do not want more of the same we REQUIRE a real solution. USA pays almost DOUBLE what Canadians do for health care. Canada simply removed the private health insurance for profit insurance companies from the health care system and cut the costs of health care by almost one half.
So why would that work you ask? Why have private for profit health insurance have become the merchants of misery in our health care system?
I think the reason is so simple we tend to overlook it. In order to become Doctors, Doctors take an oath to do good for their patients and not to harm anyone. Essentially Doctors promise not to enrich their pocketbook at the expense of our health. That is not to say Doctors always live up to that oath but private for profit insurance companies never took that oath and in fact do exactly the opposite. Health insurance companies spend huge amounts of money doing what we do not want them to do. Insurance companies have no business being in the business of deciding our health care system, our health policy, and deciding who gets what medical service and who doesn’t! They are NOT serving our best interests, they are serving theirs!

Posted by: dave- | March 4, 2010, 5:05 am 5:05 am

Dear Mr. President and Congress,
Don’t you feel guilty that you only pay $42.00 per month for unlimited Medical Treatments irregardless of cost at US Navy Medical Center Bethesda (Senator Kennedy) and US Army Medical Center Walter Reed (VP Cheney).
And did I mention the Doctor’s Office at Congress that you can visit at any time.
Please do not attempt to even try to convince us that we will have access to the same care that you receive. As even those US Military Veterans wounded in Combat do not have access to those special wings (buildings) and Medical Treatments at USN Bethesda nor USA Walter Reed.
Do you not have a conscience or feel shame.
How about fixing the problems of Jobs by eliminating the 1994 Free Trade Agreements and Amendments.
Fix the Economy by Reinstating the Glass Steagall Acts (to prevent another 1907 Depression and 1929-1939 Great Depression, eliminate those Laws (1999 Gramm Leach Bliley Act and 2000 Modernization Act) that re allowed the causes and the International Swaps and Derivatives Association triggering the 60-100 Trillion USDs “Global Economic Crisis” consisting of all the other “Crisis” (like Mortgage, Credit, Wall Street, etc.) and will trigger the next Crisis of 54.6 Trillion USDs. As all the Billion USD Bailouts do not pay for Trillions and are only paybacks for campaign contributions or buying Electoral College Votes.

I am so sick of hearing all these lies about Obama and the health care plan. It’s all about stopping the insurance companies from dictating what doctors we can see, how much care we can get, and how we should die. I haven’t been able to get health-care insurance at all for about 6 years and I’m 55. Without reform, I will simply have to shut up and die as soon as nature decides, because I will not have access to this great health care system that you are so fond of. I have a pre-existing condition. That means the insurance companies get to tell me that I am not worth saving.
You all are ignoring the pain and suffering of people around you. It’s all “me, me, me.” I don’t want freebies, but I would like a chance to get health care that I can afford. That’s all Obama is doing. It’s not Socialism. It’s just fairness.

Posted by: etenglish | March 4, 2010, 7:04 am 7:04 am

Rising health care costs is the excuse for the current bill. But the bill guarantees costs will rise faster than without it. The Democrats are hoping that we won’t see that. The bill is only step one of their plan. When the bill causes an even more severe health care crisis, they’ll be smiling as they seize control of the entire health care system, and turn our country into another politically and economically weak socialist country. We’ll all be waiting for the President to go through the bill, line by line, and take out the pork and earmarks as he promised in his campaign. Yeah, right.

Posted by: Sam | March 4, 2010, 7:25 am 7:25 am

I sure hope the Dem plan fails. I agree we need some sort of reform, but this bill is not it. Look at delivery costs – until those are lowered, insurance cannot be lowered. It will cost individuals more – Obama stated because it will offer you more. Can you imagine what your car insurance would cost if it included “preventative maintenance” and other maintenance costs. Lower delivery – drug costs; hospital costs ($140 for a tylenol??); medical device costs; malpractice insurance costs. Use creativity to encourage more Community Health Centers. Move more slowly – once we are hit with unintended consequences of this bill, it will be too late to turn back.

I’m unemployed and my wife is a visiting nurse. All of a sudden, her agency is starting to push her around, making her change her schedule to please the dictates of the administration and not the desires of the patients/clients. In at least two instances, the schedulers have demanded she change her schedule to see a patient/client. When my wife explained she had other patients to see at that time, she was ordered to change her schedule. When she complied and went to see the patient at that time, the patient/client and/or guardian of the patient protested that it was not a good time for them but the agency would not back down.
Is this the coming trend? Is this agency actually getting ready for Obamacare? You know if a bureaucracy is in charge, they will have to, in the interest of efficiency and cost saving, force people to abide by a schedule that will not be in the best interests of the patient. In other words, we are going to give up our freedom one more notch. After that, what other freedoms will they take?

To Bob and others. We DO NOT have the money to do this. We have no money. We are so far in debt now, we may never see the end of it. If this passes, get ready for increased taxes, premiums and cuts to other programs to try and offset the cost. The government is not equipped to take over the healthcare system in this nation.

My neighbors have taken expensive trips twice a yr. for 4 years. Disney, South America etc… They throw parties for hundreds of guests, yet they say they cannot afford health insurance. They own two dump trucks and a tax business. We don’t need reform. We need a revolt against giving our tax dollars to pay for do nothings.

Posted by: Landers | March 4, 2010, 9:42 am 9:42 am

I agree with virtually all of the comments already made…yes the plan is too expensive…yes something needs to be done…yes the President appears to be almost reckless with the economy and deficit spending, yes, I’m extremely reluctant to embrace such a sweeping government takeover of health insurance. I have seen first hand the messes of Medicare, Federal Multi-peril crop insurance and yes even Federal Flood Insurance. One problem with all of these plans with heavy government involvement is the ever changing paperwork nightmare and documentation requirements involved. I have little doubt that heavy government involvement in health care will make a confusing subject even more confusing and complicated with volumes of paperwork that will amaze even those who support the concept.

1. The American people inaugurate a half-Arab president with a total of 142 days experience as a US Senator from the most politically corrupt state (city) in America whose governors have been ousted from office. He won’t show America his birth certificate.
The President’s first official act is to order the close of Gitmo and make sure terrorists civil rights are not violated.
(honest mistake?)
2. The U.S. Congress rushes to confirm a black Attorney General, Eric Holder, whose law firm we later find out represents seventeen Gitmo Terrorists.
(An honest mistake?!)
3. The CIA Boss appointee, Leon Panetta, has absolutely no experience, has a daughter Linda, we find out, who is a true radical anti-American activist and a supporter of all the Anti-American regimes in the western hemisphere. (There were socio-economic factors involved!)
4. We got the second most corrupt American woman (Pelosi is #1) as Secretary of State; bought and paid for. (You can put lipstick on a pig, but it still stinks!)
5. We got a Tax Cheat for Treasury Secretary who did not properly file his own taxes for 12 years.
(He misspoke!)
6. A Commerce Secretary nominee who withdrew due to corruption charges.
(Another honest mistake???)
7. A Tax cheat nominee for Chief Performance Officer who withdrew under charges.
(Hmmm… another screw-up?)
8. A Labor Secretary nominee who withdrew under charges of unethical conduct.
(Ok, maybe this person was just plain stupid.)
9. A Secretary HHS nominee (Daschle) who withdrew under charges of cheating on his taxes.
(I’m running out of excuses for these idiots!!)
10. Multiple appointments of former lobbyists after an absolute campaign statement that no lobbyists would be appointed.
(Dear God, I am getting a headache!)
All this occurred just during the first three weeks. . . but who’s counting?
America is being run by the modern-day Three Stooges ; Barry, Nancy and Harry and they are still trying to define stimulus…”it’s spending!!!”
The congress passes the $800,000,000,000 (that’s $800 billion) pork-loaded spending bill where the government gives you a smidgen of your tax dollars ($13 per week), making you feel so good about yourself [stimulated], that you want to run out to Wal-Mart and buy a new Chinese-made HDTV and go home and watch Telemundo!
Here’s the good news though – Obama took Air Force One to Denver to sign the stimulus package, wasting as much as 10,000 gallons of fuel OR 24 JOBS FOR ONE YEAR.
Don’t you just love hypocrites?
Obama went to the International Olympic Committee to have them choose Chicago for a host city, he failed.
Obama went to Copenhagen to lecture them on global warming, he failed.
Obama went to new Jersey to promote the Democratic candidate for governor, he failed,
Obama went to Virginia to promote the Democratic candidate for governor, he failed.
Obama went to Massachusetts to promote the Democratic candidate for senator, he failed.
Speaking of praying, Obama has now been president for a full year and yet he & wife (first lady) Michelle, the Christian family they claim to be, have not attended church since the inauguration.
Obama is the 1st president in history who did not attend any Christmas religious observance.
He was the first president to miss the Army & Navy Football game.
He must miss Reverend Wright!
And finally, he is the 1st president to remain on vacation after a terrorist attack.
In these times ‘I’ll keep my God, my freedom, my gun and my money.
Anyone that supports this insanity can keep
“THE CHANGE”.

As an independent I am always concerned about the governments tendency towards big spending without any plans to repay the debt. Name one program they have been involved in that is not in the red?! Many will say medicare is working, but at what price?! How can you say something is working when it never pays for itself. Also I believe it will not be 1 trillion but will ultimately be 3-4 trillion. The government is always over budget! I want healthcare reform but not with the government playing an active role as a provider for the nation. Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely!!

i want this bill to pass asap! get the ball rolling on this. the reason republicans want to scrap this bill and start from scratch is so they can vote against it at every commitee,if this doent get passed we will not see this topic brought up for decades! obama has done plenty for his first year, health care BIG issue, stimulous package, which would have been WAY worse if not passed,
jobs bills, give the guy credit i mean he is trying to fix 9 years of rRepublican RUN damage…

How can it work? The way this bill works is every family that makes under $100,000 has a cap of 9% of their income they will be responsible for to pay for health care premiums/costs. The rest of the costs will be put on all americans that make over $100,000. The number of american families that make under $100,000 is nearly 2/3 of the population. The burden this will place on people making over $100,000 will eventually break them or they will lose the incentive to try to make more money because it would be economically better to make less and pay less taxes and get health care at a cheaper cost. This would actually provide them a better quality of life. This bill will eventually destroy the will of the american people to try to be the best they can and give up and let the government take care of them. It is a sad day in America.

Pres. Obama is a lawyer and he is much smarter than we americans who knows what is best for our wellbeing. I just hope the blue dog democrats stick to their guns and votes against this bill that 60% + americans do not want.
