Texas ‘Christian’ Textbooks Coming to Class?

In March, we had a report from Dan Harris about a textbook controversy in Texas with national implications. At issue? Controversial new curriculum standards that may affect how students across the country are taught. Today, by a 9-5 vote, the 15-member Texas Board of Education approved the standards, which call for greater focus on the Christian traditions of the founding fathers. Take, for example, changing the language "Democratic society" to "Constitutional Republic." Or emphasizing the achievements of a Republican icon like Newt Gingrich. Critics — and there were plenty of them when we first blogged about this — say the standards impose ideology in the classroom. Why does what Texas does matter for the rest of the country? With 4.7 million public school students, textbooks publishers often tailor their curriculum to meet the desires of the Lone Star state. Embedded below is the original report, "Texas Textbook Controversy."

The slanted information and evasive rewordings in these textbook changes do a massive disservice to the generation of innocent schoolchildren who will be exposed to these new books. Shame on you, Texas!

It was mentioned on ABC Nightly news on 5-21-10 that Where Texas goes, so goes the nation. Then Diane Sawyer asked if Texas was going to far, my answer, Texas ALWAYS goes too far.

I am very proud as an AMERICAN (note: NO hyphenation) that Texas decided to finally stand up, be counted in an ethical and concerned manner for its educational system to mandate honest history, and in so doing renounce the politically-correct revisionist history agenda that limits knowledge. Texas … stand proud and tall forever.

At last a state that has the guts to teach their children the true history of this country. Way to go Texas!!!!

Once again the religious right (right as in political direction, not right as in correct)and the state of Texas goes too far to shove their outdated and uninformed attitude down the throats of America through unwitting students and youth. It all rings of the Nazi’s use of youth to corrupt minds when they are the most vulnerable.

Good for you Texas!!! It’s about time the states started to teach the truth about America and it’s Christian heritage. The idea of seperation of church and state is only in a letter written by Jefferson, it is NOT in our constitution…God has made this country GREAT…and we can see the results when as a nation we try and deny Him…

Ignorance prevails in Texas. These folks should be charged with child abuse.

“renounce the politically-correct revisionist history agenda”
“It’s about time the states started to teach the truth about America and it’s Christian heritage.”
Diminishing the role and views of Thomas Jefferson in the making of the United States of America corrects a revisionist history?
Did these people actually study any history? And I’m not talking about even the history books they hate, I mean the writings of the people who created this nation.
My god people, read the writings of Thomas Jefferson, read the debates in the Federal Convention of 1787.
You can have your religion without destroying the nation. What is happening to my country?

This is so sad. Hopefully the good people of Texas realize their mistake, and elect people who aren’t on the fringe.

What will be the difference between Saudi Arabia and Texas text book?

Posted by: azby | May 21, 2010, 11:38 pm 11:38 pm

It is a sad thing when brainwashed children grow up to spread the human plague of religion. I am only glad that this is a american history lie, because you know for sure that if someone was trying to put this big of a change into the bible or any other holy book people would end up dying over it. When people say things like without god people would act bad, I can only think of the evil always done in gods name.

I’m truly appalled that a society which claims to pride itself on democracy, truth, and liberty could permit such a travesty to take place. History is to be a record of objective, verifiable facts, not a fanciful tale of who was good and pure according to one group’s agenda.
There is no place in a free society for an educational system to intentionally bias the curriculum in favor of the views of certain outspoken members of its constituency. Facts are facts, and must be presented as such. It is not the place of the schools to shape political opinion, nor to form a framework which right-wing activists may use to further indoctrinate the young. I have nothing against the freedom of the religious right to believe as they do. It is guaranteed by the First Amendment. But could someone please remind Texas that the rest of us are protected by the First Amendment, too?
Next we’ll be reading that Hitler was a good guy because he tried to rid the world of a minority, without all those “unintended consequences” of civil rights.
Flags should be flown at half-staff at schools around the country, as we mourn the loss of objectivity in America and the death of our freedoms as we know them.
George Santayana, a prominent Spanish-American novelist, poet, and philosopher, once remarked “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” The Texas decision seems to ensure that within a few generations, we as a society will not remember the past.
Oh, wait, Santayana was a minority. I guess he’ll be stricken from the historical record, too.

Christian values of the founding fathers… The founding fathers of this country fully understood the need for separation of church and state. They understood the inherent dangers relative to allowing religion and religious zelots the ability to direct the course of education. Facts and historic truth are what need to be taught, no more, no less. If history is not honestly taught, then we are ensuring that our children have not learned from the past and are destined to repeat it. This is a situation where the U.S. Government needs to intercede. The rest of the country needs to take heed and not follow these standards of ignorance.

I have always loved by home state, Texas. I was raised to Tell the Truth and thank the Lord the new textbooks approved this week do that without all the liberal garbage they contained for so many years. I have felt for many years that the growing liberal mindset promulgated predominantly by Democrats would be the downfall of this great country and as each day passes, it looks more likely that we are headed down the road to perdition. Hooray for the American History TEXTBOOK TRIUMPH!

God Bless Texas & Arizona. The war against Radical Liberalism has finally begun. The conservatives and common sense Americans have awakened.
November 10th cannot come soon enough.
Newt for President.

All the division and derision in this country today saddens me. While the “melting pot” of the past has given way to the “salad bar” or “salsa” pot or whatever the regional phrase is, we have lost our national identity. Hyphenated citizenships, “afro,” “Hispanic,” “Bulgarian,” …ad infinitum, should be totally pointless. As a teenager in the Sixties, I had hoped that our country would heal before I reached sixty myself. I guess not. It seems that the Great American Experiment, whatever that was, has turned this great land and all the people who live here into a strip mine for the other nationalities of the world to ravage. Allowing all religions and nationalities to live and prosper here does not mean flaunting any one or group of them. If we really are Americans or ever hope to be, the hyphenation, and the flaunting, have to end.
AS TO THE POLITICAL SOLUTION OF THE TEXAS TEXTBOOK PROBLEM…
The saddest part of this whole controversy is that no one will stand up to Texas and the text book companies who make the changes they want. In states where the books are not representative of their own curricula, they should boycott the offending textbooks! With the online nature of education today, it certainly would be easy enough to assemble a curriculum and the materials to support it without including textbooks, post it on a state approved and secured website and let the teachers teach what is approved. In the process they would be joining the 21st century. OR have a universal baseline curriculum for the country that all states would use, one that has no political leaning, and states would supplement it as I just described.
-Saddened, but not not hopeless.

It is about time we returned to our Country and not teach children lies about our Country such as the lies in Arizona textbooks.

Posted by: Madeleine | May 22, 2010, 9:46 am 9:46 am

The commentary Posted by: Saddened is the scariest piece I have ever read! “A state approved and secured website and let the teachers teach what is approved” Wow! The Progressive Socialist wing of the Democratic Party would love that.
I would like to have my grand children know the thinking that went into the birth of this the Greatest Nation on Earth!

Posted by: ACH | May 22, 2010, 10:15 am 10:15 am

Why do the Christians feel the need to push their twisted beliefs upon the rest of us in America? If they want to mess with their kids minds, then they can do so at home.
As for ACH, the teachers did not approve of this. RIGHT WING Christians forced the vote.
Noew I am going to have to find a way to pay for private schooling for my son because Texas screwed up public schools.
Thanks a lot!

Posted by: caveman73 | May 22, 2010, 10:41 am 10:41 am

ACH:
Wake up and look around. Google “lesson plans state standards” and you will see nearly every state in the union represented including Texas. “State” in the context of United States, means your local control. State’s rights is the larger among all the current issues facing this country. Maybe you need to take a broader, less filtered look at what others are saying.
Still Saddened.

Now the Republican Texas Cult wants to control education. I hope and pray that the children can be more enlightened to their prejudice racist nature. The Right Republicans realize their base is dying. The are trying to corrupt the youth. I am glad that they are turning more right and more racist. It means more wins for the centerist democats.

It sounds like the Christian Taliban (right wing individuals) found a back door to push there beliefs down our childrens throats.

Posted by: Jane Doe | May 22, 2010, 11:37 am 11:37 am

There will come a day, about 4 years from now, when the first crop of students educated with these text books apply to colleges and get rejected over students from other states because Texas high school diplomas will be worth less than those from states that don’t filter the learning experience through a religious/political lens.

Posted by: Don Van | May 22, 2010, 11:53 am 11:53 am

Conservatives have always flirted with racism and fascism, They become more embolden each year. This act is arrogant in its racial, political, and religious narcissism.
Education must be truthful and factual, and not sifted through the hands of political extremists!

Posted by: Dave | May 22, 2010, 12:14 pm 12:14 pm

Hmmm..The Right Wing (the Republican Party) wants church & state as one. Isn’t that what the Taliban wants, isn’t that what Iran has? Gee, don’t Muslim states and their organizations teach their children from “specialized” textbooks that paint their way of thinking as the right way of thinking and their views on history as the “correct” history? And this is what the Republican Party wants to model our American school curriculums after.
In my opinion, its the Republican Party with their divisiveness that is runing our country. We might not like everything in our history, but a fact is a fact. But then again the Repbulicans have never let fact stand in their way when spewing their delusional views.
Looks like its time for other companies too spring up and print text books for school districts to purchase and let Texas to their own ways of thinking.
I for one do not want anyone other than myself, my husband or our priest discussing anything religious with my children. School Boards for our public schools should not be permitted to inflict their religious views or misguided interpretations of history on our children. If you want your children taught a specific religious view or a specific view of historical events then you pay out of your own pocket to send your children to a private school.

USa Christian nation? Since when?

Posted by: George Washington | May 22, 2010, 12:30 pm 12:30 pm

What is wrong with emphasizing America’s Christian roots in a textbook? One could argue all textbooks already have a liberal slant because they have omitted the fact. In addition, have you been to an American College Campus recently? There is only liberal voices, no diversity of opinion & all conservative voices are shouted down. If liberals want fairness, maybe they should stop indoctrinating & giving far left one sided arguments on every issue. VOTE REPUBLICAN! PROUD BLACK REPUBLICAN!

You people are SO dramatic! Drama, Drama, Drama! Seriously, child abuse? You think Texas “always” goes too far? Hitler? That’s your opinion which really doesn’t matter when it comes to facts about our history. Is he wrong about the facts? NO. Our country is based and built on Christian faith, teachings, and morals. It’s not “shoving our faith or beliefs” onto people. It’s just FACT.Just because you don’t believe in God, or have a different religion, doesn’t make that any less true. It’s exactly the way our country was formed, starting with the constitution, and enlightening on that is not wrong. If you were born here, you SHOULD understand that. And if you have been graciously blessed enough to come to our free country, there should be an understanding & respect that our country was built on those things and the God that we serve. Our forefathers set the standard to which we live, but you are obviously forgetting where they got their morals, values and distinction of right from wrong from. The Bible. So technically, you wouldn’t have all the distinction and standards that we have now. So you can’t say “it would be the same” and that you would just automatically “know.”
He was embarrassed by the mistakes he made and faced it. I do agree it’s ridiculous if he really plans on taking out Thomas Jefferson’s writings, because enlightening on one thing, should not be diminishing another. But when it comes to our Country (not just the State of Texas), God is relevant and ALWAYS will be.God Bless America <3

The Republicans on the board bowing to special interests..Texas is home to big text book publishers and educational software companies. New books mean new profits, money to grease the republican party, with easy to get taxpayer money. Look into the Bush families involvement in text book and ed.software companies!

Several of the comments above express the belief that the recent’corrections’ of social studies textbooks will protect and/or strengthen the role of Christianity in American culture.
Just the opposite will be the case. This ill-advised attempt by Don McLeroy and his fellow fundamentalists to disseminate their peculiar beliefs runs counter to the attitudes of most Christians, not to mention the attitudes of secular people. This is going to turn out to be a pyrrhic victory for the fundamentalists.

Saddend is absolutely right in the what the state response should be about the text books. I teach 6th grade history and YOU DO NOT NEED A TEXT BOOK TO TEACH HISTORY. There are so many other resources available to suppliment a text book or to use instead of a text book. Get those kids on the internet, expose them to primary sources, apply for grants to obtain additional materials. Text books are used as a reference. They are not teaching the class.

Posted by: loves2teach | May 23, 2010, 11:17 am 11:17 am

As a student in the Texas Education System, these changes are horrendous. Glorifying the US isn’t the right thing to do. Look at what happened during the Holocaust. US bombers were 50 miles away from the Auschwitz bombing camps, and we refused to bomb them because during the time because of huge Antisemitism feelings anyway. Its just that history shouldn’t be slanted. What about the My Lai Massacre during the Korean War where American troops annihilated a whole village including innocent children regardless of age.I’m not saying the US is a bad country. Its that if things like these are kept from students, what are the chances it will happen again? By injecting conservative (or liberal) views, history is biased and racist.
Also to those that believe that these Christian values are a good thing to teach in the public system. Consider the fact that 66% of Texas school children are minorities. If these values are continued, many non-Christian taxpayers will refuse to pay school taxes. Why? Because parents will protest. We must continually accept the fact that we must not convert back to the 19th century ideologies of Social Darwinism by injecting our own biased beliefs into the minds of other children who may not want the same point of view.
I can guarantee one thing. Students such as myself are already trying to understand politics. If these things are not ended soon then the Republicans here will be put to sleep. Its only a matter of time.

Posted by: AngryStudent | May 23, 2010, 11:57 am 11:57 am

They revise history to fit their own agenda, and justify it by accusing others of having done the same. Folks, it’s the people in Texas, the Social Conservatives who are doing the revising here. PERIOD. They couldn’t win the argument based on the facts, so they’re changing the facts.
And they feel this is justified, because the just KNOW they’re right. Well, YOU’RE NOT! You’ve been wrong your whole lives, and it’s about time you accept that; not change the books so that we can raise the entrie next generation in ignorance.
You social conservatives are FOOLS. Every generation you’ve been proven wrong by science and progress and the world will keep moving on without you. What you’ve accomplished here is nothing short if INDOCTRINIATION into a FALSE, SELF-SERVING, JINGOISTIC ideology. You’re ruining his country, and you cannot disappear from the political and educational systems quickly enough.

Bravo for Texas. It is about time someone showed some leadership in trying to halt the 45-year-old unrelenting decay and decline of the United States of America. Let’s bring back a reaffirmation of Christian values and that will begin to turn the country around and get it moving forward again. It is going to be a long hard way back after what has happened to this once great country.

Genocide/ethnic cleansing, slavery, and greedy corporations destroying the economy and environment are all truths that Texas in their unbelievable stupidity are denying. These folks are exactly the same as North Korea or Iran in trying to develop a retarded theocracy. This is Texas’s legacy. History MUST include the negative behaviors along with the positive behaviors of a society to be of any value to that society. Anything less is Anti American. BTW, there is nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing Christian in Texas when lieing about America’s past is embraced.

@PJW:
This country was built on the basis of religious freedom, and Texas is taking that freedom away. By emphasizing Christian beliefs they are pushing Christianity on to the nation’s school kids. And for Arizona, the law is a huge mistake, because they are legalizing racial profiling, and thus racism itself. Crack down on those who pay the illegal immigrants, because they are the ones to blame for this.

How would that idea pass by the Harmony Science Academy Charter Schools that are run by Islamic Turkish people under the Gulen Movement?
They are currently teaching Turkish language, dance, singing and give the top students a trip to the Islamic Republic of Turkey at the end of the year.

Has anyone really looked at what the Board actually approved to teach? By all these comments, I see alot of opinions that reflect hate, bias and anti-Christian sentiments… they also reveal the fact that few of the commentors READ what changes Texas intends to make.
Reminds me of pre-WW2 Germany where it was acceptable to make exaggerated anti-Semitic slurs based on opinions and lies.
This is America. People from all over this nation see things differently.
I’m a 4th generation Californian, but I lived in Texas for 4 years. Some of my greatest discussions were on “Slavery vs. State’s Rights”. I understand both sides of the argument now. My question is, do some of you?
I don’t like it that my kids are forced to learn garbage that I don’t agree with, but they have to understand it so they can relate to others with differing opinions.
It’s called being ‘educated’.

The progressives and liberal minds of this nation are bigots as they only accept ideas that they agree with. It is no wonder that most universities, media and loose interpeters of Constitution go into attack mode when the other side expresses to show the facts compared to their utopian dreams. This is another piece of the Govt vs God battle that is playing out for everyone to see. In the end, it will be foolish to be pro Gov’t.
