“World News with Diane Sawyer” Only Newscast to Grow Both Total Viewing and Demo Audiences Week-to-Week

Closes Total Viewing Gap with NBC to Smallest Margin of the Season

 

Expands Total Viewing and Demo Advantages Over CBS Week-to-Week & Year-to-Year

 

For the week of July 19th, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 7.01 million Total Viewers and a 1.5/7 among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.  “World News” topped “NBC Nightly News” by 120,000 Total Viewers on Monday, July 19.

 

“World News” was the only newscast to experience growth among both Total Viewers (+370,000) and Adults 25-54 (+160,000) week-to-week. This marks “World News” best Total Viewer delivery since May and its best demo delivery in a month. In addition, “World News” was the only program to grow its Total Viewing audience (+3%) year-to-year. 

 

The Total Viewing gap between “World News” and “NBC Nightly News” shrank to the smallest margin of the season. Compared to the previous week the Total Viewing gap between the two programs was 60% smaller, standing at 360,000 viewers, and the gap among Adults 25-54 was 36% smaller.  Year-to-Year, ABC narrowed the Total Viewing gap with NBC by 57% and by 22% among Adults 25-54.

 

“World News” total viewing and demo advantages over “CBS Evening News” grew both week-to-week and year-to-year. ABC’s weekly demo (390,000) and Total Viewing (2,000,000) advantages over CBS were the largest since May. Compared to the same period last year, ABC’s advantage among Total Viewers expanded by 50% and among Adults 25-54 grew by 11%.

On Tuesday, July 20, Diane Sawyer anchored “World News” from Washington where she had an exclusive interview with British Prime Minister David Cameron.  On Wednesday, as Facebook reached the 500 million user milestone, Sawyer sat down with Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg for an exclusive television interview and anchored the broadcast from Palo Alto, CA. “World News” continued to report on the crisis in the Gulf with Matt Gutman and Jeffrey Kofman reporting from the region. In addition, Jake Tapper followed the controversy surrounding the firing of USDA worker Shirley Sharrod.
