Closing Argument: Beck-a-Palooza: Does the Talk-Show Host Belong on the Mall?
Rev. Al Sharpton says that by staging a major Washington rally on the anniversary of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech in front of the Lincoln Memorial, Glenn Beck is making a "blatant attempt to hijack a movement that changed America."
Beck's supporters, meanwhile, tie the rally to the same tradition of protest and freedom that animated the civil rights movement.
So what do you think? Is Glenn Beck trespassing on hallowed ground or is this rally in the tradition of Dr. King?

Beck is a hate-monger and it makes perfect sense that he would dedicate on the spot of MLK’s iconic speech. No surprise at all. He planned this way in advance.

Glenn Beck, like every other American, has the right to say anything. He is trying to do something good. But, of course, the news media would turn good and make it look bad. Shame on today’s news people. You are a disgrace. Maybe you should all try saying the truth and stop letting money be your guide. America was originated by the people and for the people. Al Sharpton can say what he wants and so can Glen Beck.

Just finished watching an interview of Alveeta King by Vicki Mayberry. I was apalled at the obvious arrogance, antagonism, and skepticism Ms. M displayed during this interview. She was so blatant in her bias and anti Beck position, even trying to goad M.King into a critical position on Beck, which thank goodness, this woman would not back down from her message. There is no way this interview could be put forth as objective journalism.

The late rev Martin Luther King, JR. was a prayerful Christian minister whose positive impact on American culture wasn’t so popular while he was alive. He was put in Jail sometimes and eventually assinated. Glen Beck on the other hand expresses his views and Americans either like him or can’t appreciate him. Glen Beck’s influence is small and he will come and go fast ans not be remembered. The dream Martin Luther King, Jr. described will never fade away not be forgotten.

Glen Beck is a master of self promotion. Everything he does is to enrich GB. He preys on people’s fear.
I think his rally is just another self promotion for his books and his other entertainment interests.

MLK gave a poignant speech, but “best thing in American History”? Hardly, Joachim.
Posted by: richard | August 28, 2010, 12:22 am 12:22 am
Beck is not wrong for what he is doing. The whole premise of the rally is RESTORING HONOR IN AMERICA. Dr. King would assuredly support such an idea. That’s what he was all about, and obviously Sharpton and the rest of his ilk have obviously forgotten that.
Posted by: CARL H | August 28, 2010, 12:24 am 12:24 am
In an effort to minimize the purpose and significance of MLK’s message and the context, GB is attempting to attach himself to that day (although he had 365 other choices)so he can replace the original message. He is counterfeit!

Glenn Beck is a Great American dedicated to America and the Freedom and Justice we once had. We can all pray that the “Restoring Honor” rally, as a non-political event, will help to wake up much of America that have not been following Glenn. We simply must become aware of the freedoms we have lost and the power that the Government has taken over. Glenn is a blessing to all who cherish Liberty, Truth and Freedom!!

Oh …. and one other thing. ABC tried desperately to negatively slant the piece against Beck. Case in point: The comment Beck maded that, “African-Americans did not own the right to Martin Luther King”, which was followed by “whites do not have ownership to Abraham Lincoln”, but ABC omitted that part of it. Watch and listen to the tape people. All of it. ABC IS PART OF THE BLATANTLY BIASED LIBERAL MEDIA!

What is wrong with restoring honor? The liberal media bias makes me absolutely sick. I have never seen such sickening partisan reporting. I’m no big Beck fan, but I simply can’t see why people who disagree with him label him as a “hater.” Those are the ones who are haters.
Posted by: George | August 28, 2010, 12:30 am 12:30 am
Beck is Anti-American, a hate monger and opposes everything that Martin Luther King ever stood for. Martin Luther King was a leader for peace and understanding. Beck is quite the opposite.

I agree with Glen Beck that American has lost direction. A community organizer has targeted American as his community. I was very disappointed in ABC Nightline negative coverage. A person who can draw 100,000 must have something positive to offset the negative view of the liberal media who always attacks conservative values with such negative bias. I think ABC is the problem not Glen Beck
Posted by: Bill Reid | August 28, 2010, 12:45 am 12:45 am
I think that people who support MLK,know that this Restoring Honor Rally, won’t do that. Instead it is a grandstanding piece remeniscent to lynching or snuffing out of anything not “white”. That is the reason for no inclusion of diversity there. Telling the supporters not to bring racist signs, is like saying bring your good side for the camera and your heart is still contaminated against anything MLK said. Therefore, this Rally is wrong, on that point. To say you love your country and harbor hate, is not civil at all.

Martin Luther King preached love,
understanding of those he did not agree with, and a non-racial world. Beck’s
line is the opposite. Although he professes love, he preaches hate toward those he does not agree with, calls the president a racist, use the founding fathers, who would disclaim his ranting,
as a phony cover for his divisive rhetoric. Martin Luther King’s mission was to bring people together, not divide them and accuse those who did not agree with him of bringing an end to this country. Bech! Bah!

I feel that Glenn Beck has no idea what freedom actually is or does he? He in my opinion, is trying to “upstage” Dr. King and everything that the good “Dr.” stands for; as for instance “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. By his “supposedly” American right of expression is a way of adding to our already rampant moral decay.

Glenn Beck tells the truth and he backs up everything he says with proof. He explains himself. The liberal media on the other hand, only shows what they want us to hear and believe. It is sickening how the media reports things. Glenn Beck does not promote hate in anyway shape or form. He has every right to Restore Honor, at the Lincoln Memorial. For some reason the liberal media only choose to try to make some people believe that this is about racism and hate. It is only about HONOR. Honor is what is sorely missing in this country. The trouble is that the liberals are afraid of the truth because it makes them and their agendas look bad. God Bless all who attend this event.

Glen Beck is the opposite of Martin Luther King in every way imaginable.
Martin Luther King preached love and meamt it, he showed understandng of his enemies, he despised racism. Beck preaches hate toward those he doesn’t agree with. Instead of trying to bring people together as King did, he divides them and accuses those he doesn’t agree with of destroying the country. The Founding Fathers whom Beck uses as phony cover for his diatribe, would
disassociate themselves from his rants.

@Jon – You are right. I could barely make it through tonights event at the Kennedy Center. Nothing but hate, racism, (hold on..let me turn on Olbermann…oh yeah), hate, racism, and hate and there was even some racism believe it or not. At one point they even got racial about things. Of course, we had to hate on some hispanics and poor people too. Oh yeah and I almost forgot to mention, the racism was unbelievable. They even played the race card.

Sorry, I was so terrified from spending the night in a room full of Pastors and Rabbis that I wasn’t thinking straight.
@Bill – You are so right. Like I said before, it was nothing but hate at tonights event. I mean really…how can you expect to bring people together when all you have are Pastors, Rabbis, Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Men, Women and Children in the same room. One more thing…the racism was unbearable. They even played the race card.

I don’t see how Glen Beck’s rally can possibly restore honor. It seems more like jingoism than patriotism. The rally is an excuse for a bunch of unhappy people to find scapegoats to blame and take out their frustrations on.
Sure Beck has the right to hold such an event, but it demonstrates poor judgement and a lack of patriotism.

Every MLK day, the 2nd graders at our school march arm in arm through the hallways singing “We shall overcome…”. It is the most beautiful, moving thing that happens all year. The school is probably 98% white. The black community does not “own” MLK and his messages; they are for all of us to embrace. Glen Beck is not “hijacking” the day. Rev. Sharpton doesn’t seem to understand Rev. King’s messages of unity and equality. I agree with Carl H.; my husband and I were appalled at the nightline interviewer’s blatant bias’…very unprofessional.
Posted by: Holly | August 28, 2010, 2:08 am 2:08 am
Al Sharpton claims that Dr. King stated clearly in his speech that he wanted to see “federal government” protection for the rights of black people. I find it curious that neither the Nightline producers nor Terry Moran found it important to point out that the words “federal” and “government” (much less the phrase “federal government”) do not appear anywhere in Dr. King’s speech.

Beck is brilliant. His whole strategy is to switch the labels on two opposing products, so people end up consuming the exact opposite of what they want. Who was responsible for the civil rights movement, not SOCIAL JUSTICE PROGRESSIVES (which Martin Luther King was), but extreme right wing evangelicals like Beck! Who fought for decent wages, security and dignity of working class people in the US – not people who believe in ECONOMIC JUSTICE like the labor movement – but pro-corporate, gold merchants like Beck! What’s next? Women’s right to vote was won by old white men? The confederates are the ones who fought against slavery? The constitution was written by religious fanatics who hated the separation of Church and State? You see, it’s so simple: the labels have all been switched. You better believe Beck when he says it’s ketchup, even if its green and tastes like mustard. All hail the re-labeller in chief!

This is America! Why shouldn’t he have a right to do this? If it were illegal aliens, gays, muslims, pro-choice activists, or labor unions, the mainstream media would be praising their causes. When it comes to christian beliefs, they want to portray it as something racist or politically incorrect.

Glenn Beck has given credit to all groups for their good deeds. He has also castigated those who have done wrong; no matter the ethnicity. He is eccentrc, but a true patriot. Those saying he preaches hate have not watched him. The fact that the main stream media is now talking about him, shows he is making an impact. They have been mum on him for many months. Now that he has a following plus their viewer base has gone down may be the reason they have suddenly noticed him.

If you hate Glenn Beck for being slanted to the extreme right, then you should equally dislike ABC’s reporting of the rally, with the extreme slant to the left. The reporter’s snarl throughout the interview with Dr. King’s niece was a clear indicator of her feelings. What happened to unbiased journalism? That reporter should be fired.

The Lincoln Memorial does NOT belong to
Martin Luther King or the date upon
which he spoke. The Lincoln Memorial
belongs to the citizens of this country.
Glenn Beck is a citizen of this country
and he has as much right to speak there
on that date as ANYBODY else. That date
also does NOT belong to Martin Luther
King. Martin Luther King was a man of
flesh and blood just like the rest of us. He was not a diety. Those that
oppose Glenn Beck are the real haters.
They hate the fact that Glenn Beck has the right to speak his mind as ANYBODY else. The left wing socialist liberals hate people like Glenn Beck, Rush
Limbaugh and Sean Hannity because they have the guts and audacity to stand up
to them, speak their minds and expose
their lies.

Gleen Beck is a man who should not trusted. As the bible says can a leopard change its spots? (NO). Beck reminds me of a man named Jim Jones, who lead a movement against the government. Mr. Beck’s message is a deception, filled with half truths, (but a half truth is nothing but a LIE). People be very careful in what you do, but most of all do not drink the cool-aid.

Beck is trying to unite the the People. There are people of every color and every Nation there. Beck is the best is Radio talk. We Love , Respect and Appreciate his point of view. And I were him I’d use that power to expose the the racist Islamic Muslim promoting agenda of the current administration.
Currently they are robbing the blacks of their heritage and giving to the Islamic Muslims so they look like the Minority being discriminated against when it is far from the truth. The Muslims have over 2,000 mosques in the USA, they have the higher education and the better paying jobs. Yet they are exempt from paying for mandatory health insurance. They are the favorite now. Since there is a battle for ground zero they want to invoke the “black race card” calling people childish names like ignorant, racist, bigot hater just to get their way. They even have the “black African ” person in the White House protecting them as promised in Cairo. We need someone to protect the American rights it sure isn’t this current administration.
Beck gives us – People of all Colors and Nationalities -Optimism and encouragement during this time of despair. We Love Beck

I was encouraged by GMA covering the story but very disappointed by the obvious slant. The report emphasized 1 comment made by Glenn, which the report also reported he apologized for. If GMA wanted to report rather than “sell their position on the story” you would have balanced the report with Glenn’s focus on ALL Americans’ roles in our American history. He consistently exposes the roles of all races within American history. Sorry to see GMA doesn’t report the same, certainly in respect to Mr.Beck. I am happy to see Glenn continue a tradition of bringing Americans together today to celebrate all that America has to offer to all of its citizens. I can only hope Dr. Martin Luther King would have as well.

Martin Luther King told us to “judge a man by the contecnt of his character, not the color of his skin”. The words are timeless and he is correct. A person with character DOES NOT ACCEPT GOVERNMENT MONEY. He is independent and makes his own money. By transferring Americas wealth from people who EARNED it, to people who have not, our Country is bankrupt. No race or person “owns” MLK’s words, it belongs to the world, so cut it out. If you want to honor America, refuse government money and lower spending. DO IT YOURSELF, NO EXCUSES. Your children will not have a future unless you do so now.

Well, Al? Tell me? Speaking from the perspective of a liberal minded Black man who grew up seeing MLK as a cultural icon and yes even savior of sorts, I believe that Beck chose this place and time for his rally as a metaphorical slap in the face to all Americans who hold Dr. King and his message dear. That being said, I also believe that (as long as that slap remains metaphorical) he has every right to be as insensative as he pleases. My hurt feelings and general disgust for this event are not enough to stop this misguided man from expressing his views when and where he wants to, just like the Muslims have a right to build their cultural center at ground zero, and gays have the right to marry. This is America, were if we don’t learn to support the rights of those we disagree with, we will eventually end up losing our own in the process.

Glenn Beck has been an excellent example of how lies and fear can be manipulated into belief. His constant contradictions, his hate inspiring “I’m just saying,” remarks have become a launching platform for hatred all over the country. If he is the direction that the country is moving toward then I no longer want to be part of this country. I believe in the America of Jefferson, Lincoln and Martin Luther King, here people were fighting for something real, where we were free to practice religion as we chose and people knew what patriotism truly was. I want to be part of the country that comes together to help one another not tear each other apart. I pray (to the God I choose) that the multitude that are being fed by this lunatic soon realize just what it is he is dishing out.

My mother always taught me that my “Freedom of Speech” does not give me the right to yell ‘fire’ in a crowded theater when there is no fire. Whether you like, or agree with, Beck … or not, is not the issue. The point, IMHO, is that he, and others like him, are doing just that … screaming fire, when there is no fire. The end result is that people are being misled, by lies and innuendo, and causing harm to themselves and others as they trample on truth and fairness.
“Hallowed ground” … seems to be a concept of convenience. What is ‘hallowed ground’, when consideration is given to putting a theme park at Gettysburg … literally on the battlefield where thousands lost their lives in a battle for human dignity? How can a community center, 2 blocks from Ground Zero be a greater assault on ‘hallowed ground’ than a theme park on the Gettysburg battlefield? How can we expect Glen Beck to respect the values of Dr. King, when we, as a nation, fail to do so ourselves???

Of course he has a right to be there! He is a part-owner of that land. Just like MLK, Glenn is trying to expose an ever present threat to this country and that threat resides in the White House.

Al’s argument is the same one that the protesters of the “ground zero mosque” use.
If we whites can’t honor MLK……they can’t have…..Abraham Lincoln… :0)

I do not even know who Beck is, and I do not give a damn.
But I do know this: Today and tomorrow are just days of the year. We cannot start limiting what people do, just because there was some other event that happened on that day many years ago. That is true of every day of the year. Nobody would ever be able to do anything again, if we follow Sharpton’s twisted and warped logic.
Sharpton is clearly some kind of prejudiced, bigoted racist. He should just go away. I have lived my whole life in an era in this country when we were taught that race and color do not matter. We should be indifferent to race and color and place the same requirements on all people, regardless of their race and color. I do not know where the hell Sharpton has been. Is he relatively new to the country or something? We do not need racists like him coming into this country.

I think it’s hilarious when Fox Newsers complain about the “liberal media” when Fox News is simply right wing propoganda. Glen Beck is just another Rush Limbough; a shock jocky.

“Glen Beck is the opposite of Martin Luther King in every way imaginable.
Martin Luther King preached love and meamt it, he showed understandng of his enemies, he despised racism. Beck preaches hate toward those he doesn’t agree with. Instead of trying to bring people together as King did, he divides them and accuses those he doesn’t agree with of destroying the country. The Founding Fathers whom Beck uses as phony cover for his diatribe, would
disassociate themselves from his rants”
quoting Bill Kunerth

If people believe a word Glenn Beck says is for real, you’re nuts! He’s just trying to make money by being crazy.

I remember seeing a movie about something like this in Hillsborough County. It was in Riverview, Florida. The actor’s name was either John or James Cusack way back in March of 2008. Anyway, in cases like this, shouldn’t the Attorney General be involved? This was a fraud. When people have problems like this, shouldn’t they see a mental health counselor or a therapist? I’ll bet if he was on medicaid instead of some private insurance this never would have happened. Someone will eventually be arrested for this.
