It’s Time to Turn the Page: Obama
Tonight, President Obama announced that the American combat mission in Iraq has ended. "Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country," Obama said. He praised the troops, whom he says "defeated a regime that had terrorized its people. Together with Iraqis and coalition partners who made huge sacrifices of their own, our troops fought block by block to help Iraq seize the chance for a better future." But Iraq is a long way from that better future. The screams of sirens after bombings, the poverty and the dysfunction, and the political bickering all remind us the Iraq still has a long way to go. But the president promised continued support. "What America can do, and will do, is provide support for the Iraqi people as both a friend and a partner," he said. How do you feel about the Iraqi war finally ending after seven and a half years? What did you think of the president's speech? Tune in to Nightline tonight for Terry Moran's full report on the president's speech and reaction from American troops in Iraq.

The Iraq war is not ending just because Obama says so. His declaring the war over is a lie, and his removal of troops is a mistake. The conditions in Iraq are still much too shaky to do so, and even the Iraqi people are saying so.
He should be keeping a lot more troops in Iraq and in that region in general, with all the hostilities from other countries in that region–especially from Afghanistan and Iran. Also, all the equipment that he is pulling out should be left there.
He should be thinking strategically, but is not. He should be leaving a lot of troops and equipment in the region and moving them between the hostile countries as needed. If he pulls something out of Iraq, he should take the view than the may well need to bring it back. So, temporarily move it to Afghanistan, where it is needed now anyway. That way, it is nearby and can be brought back to Iraq quickly.
To really get us to the level of military presence that we need to sustain in that region on a long-term basis and to police our own borders to stop swarming illegal alien invasion, Obama should be reinstating the military draft. This cannot happen soon enough. This action would also put some Americans back to work, if he really cared about jobs.
