“20/20” Airs on Friday, Sept. 3

"It was like something out of Truman Capote's 'In Cold Blood,'" says crime scene investigator David Kofoed. Well-loved couple Wayne and Sharmon Stock were found viciously murdered in their Nebraska farmhouse on Easter Sunday in 2006.  For legendary CSI investigator Kofoed, the crime had all the earmarks of a revenge killing.  The tiny town of Murdock, Nebr., where many hadn't locked their doors for years, was in utter disbelief. But soon there would be two bewilderingly different first-hand accounts of the murder. Two videotaped confessions — by completely different people. One would turn out to be completely innocent. Deborah Roberts’ report airs on “20/20,” FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 (10:00 – 11:00 p.m. ET) on the ABC Television Network.

Every day, police across the country face the daunting challenge of distinguishing false confessions from real ones. Were the murderers the Stocks' own nephew, and a partner or two complete strangers: 17-year-old Jessica Reid and her boyfriend Gregory Fester — two teenagers on a joy-riding crime spree?

In a case that highlights the fragility of justice, authorities reluctantly had to face the fact that they have arrested two innocent men, and possibly coerced a false confession.  Even harder to face: the legendary CSI investigator had apparently planted evidence against to buttress one of the confessions.

The report includes an interview with CSI Kofoed, Jessica Reid, as well as interrogation video and never-before-seen police crime scene photos and videos.

“20/20” is anchored by Elizabeth Vargas and Chris Cuomo. David Sloan is executive producer.
