General Petraeus: “I Have a Moral Obligation to Speak Out” on Koran Burning

ABC News’ Martha Raddatz spoke to the top U.S. Commander in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus about the effect ‘Burn a Koran Day’ may have on U.S. troops safety. Here are a few excerpts from that interview. GENERAL PETRAEUS: I have merely provided my assessment as the commander who’s responsible for the safety and security of 150,000 coalition troops and who’s partnered with thousands of civilians whose safety will also be jeopardized by such an action. In this case I think you have a situation where the actions of the fellow citizens certainly arguably within the first amendment rights I think all would generally agree, could nonetheless endanger the lives of tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of fellow citizens who are deployed around the world, conducting missions, with Islamic partners in Islamic countries. MARTHA RADDATZ: Is this something that could have a long-lasting effect on soldiers here? GENERAL PETRAEUS: We fear it could. This could provide indelible images, images that in an internet age will be non-biodegradable. They will always be in cyberspace and available for extremists to use to incite and inflame public opinion against our troopers and civilians.

My job as a commander is to be concerned about the safety and security of our troopers. I think it’s important to provide an assessment of an incident that could jeopardize that safety, I think that’s very important. I think I have a moral obligation in fact to speak out on an issue like that.

General Petraeus may have a Moral Obligation to Speak Out on the Koran Burning but he also has a more important obligation that he has forgotten. That is to defend the United States Constitution – the right to freedom of expression without censorship is important to a democracy. He took an oath….

For nine years now, some experts have been telling us, that terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. Today these experts tell us, that Koran burning in Florida will fuel terrorism. Could someone please explain to me how could Koran burning affect terrorism, if there is no connection between terrorism and Islam?

What he is really saying, is that Islamists cannot handle any affront to their religion, in any way, no matter how small (a church with 30 members????), without resorting to extreme violence and mayhem.
In other words…..any offense, no matter how small, will be acted upon with murder, bombs, and military attack.
Nice people……these Islamists.

It easy to demonize people and cultures we don’t understand so let try this one,
What about burning the Bible or the Torah, you get angry Christians, Catholics and Jews. Religious differences usually end up with violence…What is it you don’t understand about “Thou shall not kill”
I don’t believe in GOD, what does that get me. Threats and hate from all sides. “Imagine theres no heaven, I wonder if you can” J. Lennon

No matter who is talking, they always think that “God is on our side”..

That pastor was looking for notoriety. He got it. Lets move on, MEDIA, shall we?
I blame the news people for putting this guy’s name and face up for all to see. Good job, you just handed our enemies a gold mine to pin their hatred upon – not that they need an excuse.
The extremists (whether it’s the pastor or our enemies) have to ask themselves this question:
“Am I helping to get our Creator’s children into heaven by showing them a better way OR am I promoting damnation for our Creator’s children by causing more havoc on earth?”
Both sides may feel they are justified, but at what price to others and yourself?

I am right in the middle of an Muslim country – Egypt – I am an American who married an Egyptian man – I sit in amazement at how the population just allows themselves to be controlled – Be it by government or religion – I am battling with the Egyptian military for recruiting my husband – Noone seems to want to buck the routine… Here’s my story – Its quite the tale:
I had no idea a country could be so devious & treat their people with such disregard… We got married in Egypt in February of this year… They even make getting married a trial… After a couple months he had to file recruiting papers with the military – They said you have a security situation because you are married to an American citizen… “Its just routine” they said “You will be refused” This was reiterated to him over & over. But that’s when most our biggest problems began – They took him to a security facility in Cairo & interrogated him for an hour & a half – asking questions about me & then forced him to sign papers stating that he would not go to the U.S. embassy & also I could not go. They demanded copies of my passport to check my travel history – After that he was required to go back to the recruiting place every 2 weeks to get a status update – This has been going on since April of this year!!!!! They sent people to his parent’s house to question them – They made late night phone calls to the home – They knew when I went back to the states because they called him to ask when his wife was coming back to Egypt – I had began the immigration process back home because we were told repeatedly he would not be recruited… Almost to the day that we heard from the USCIS that our I130 petition was approved he gets a call from the station to come get a letter – We assumed it was his refusal letter finally coming through!!! We were soooo happy! Instead it was a demand for him to come immediately to the recruiting facility to continue his recruitment!!! NOONE could believe that this was happening – Noone had ever heard of a man being recruited who was married to a foreigner inducted to the military! My flight was scheduled just like 3 days from when they demanded he show up – I rescheduled my flight & was on my way the same day he called & told me what they were doing… When he went to the recruiting center they had his paperwork as a single male – Not a man married to a foreigner – When he contested it – They said “You have to go or you will be jailed. Once you get to your base you can reapply all the papers” That’s where we are sitting now – I’m in a foreign country with very limited Arabic skills – He’s been taken from me – forced into a situation that is going to jeopardize all the work I’ve done with Immigration – Its so funny – We thought it would be the United States giving us problems – Instead its his country – We are so distraught – This trip for me was supposed to be the one where we were going to go to the embassy for our visa interview…Now all we have is this nightmare!!! My husband even told me he wants to renounce his Egyptian citizenship – He wants NOTHING more to do with his country – They even forbid him from having a passport – So we are really stuck – They have complete control over him -
I hope I’ve given you an idea of our plight – I tried lawyers here in Egypt & they said they had never heard of anyone married to a foreigner especially an American being recruited- But when it came down to the wire to confront them they backed down saying they had tried everything…. Noone here wants to buck the system… “It’s our routine… Besides its only a year” I have heard that soooooooooo many times I am going to burst!!!! Its not just his life they are messing with – They have also drug me into it!!
There must be something that can be done for him – All we want is to be a normal married couple – We did nothing wrong but fall in love & get married…
About the embassy – I didn’t go because I didn’t want him to be jailed if they found out – I called & talked with someone there (An Egyptian) who got snippy with me because I told her that what was happening was ridiculous (Of course I was in a panic when I called – They were taking my husband!!!)… “She said “That’s MY country you’re talking about…”
I wouldn’t believe this could happen – But I am living it -

His statement that it may take 19 yrs. to solve the problem in Afghanistan, shows just how much his hands are tied by the politicians.

They can burn our Flags our Bibles, threaten to destroy America, kill their own and we have to bow down to them? We have to fear that they may kill our soldiers that should not even be there to start with? Burning the Koran makes no sense to me but tucking our tails out of fear what retaliation will come to us, is sad! Hatred for Jews and Christians (largely synonymous with Israel and America) and general disdain for all non-Muslims (defined by Muslim instructors as the House of War) are deeply instilled. The Bible is described as corrupted. Separation of Islam from political control is despised.“He it is who sent his messenger . . . that he may cause it [Islam] to prevail over all religions´(Koran 9:33, M.M. Ali; see also 48:28 and 61:9). M.M. Ali designates these three passages as “the prophecy of the ultimate triumph of Islam in the whole world.” WAKE UP PEOPLE! WE ARE ALL CONDEMNED BY THE KORAN/ISLAM! THE HATE RUNS DEEP THROUGH THEIR SOUL AND TEACHINGS AND THEIR GOAL TO RULE THE WORLD IS ANCIENT TEACHINGS BY ONE filled with vengeance. Take our Troops Out and there will be no danger!

General Pertaeus is either dithering from his duty- to be tough in Afghanistan or compromising. He thinks Koran burning by a lone pastor in Americas hinterland will give an Islamic Terrorist to kill American soldiers! Why then confiscating and trashing of Bible in Saudia Arabia and other Islamic coutries and burning of American Flag in Gaza, Tehran,Kabul or Tripoli never create the spate of Christian Backlash in USA or elsewhere? All the moral rights are the sole property of Islamic Radicalism? The General should talk like a real soldier, not like a sentimental skulker.

Book burnings have never been a good idea. What does it really accomplish?
The pastor was grandiose and short-sighted to suggest such a thing.
Why give our enemies more reasons to add to their rhetoric? Our enemies need no excuse to kill us – that’s their agenda. HOWEVER, it lends credence to their rhetoric when they try to entice and coerce others to join their cause.
Some people are easily led; some people are not wrapped too tight; some people have funny ideas about life, death, and God (Allah).
Book burnings will only lead to no good.
Did the pastor think of that? If he didn’t, then he’s stupid; If he did, then he’s evil.

Book burning has NEVER been a good idea. It only gives another opportunity to add to their propaganda.
Why play into their hands?

Imagine if someone insulted your mother or father in front of others. How would you act?
The Quran is the Muslims’ Word of God (Allah) and it is more dear and valued to them than their parents, because God (Allah) Himself created them and everything else.
The west should learn to respect others and the valued things in their lives.
You don´t respect others’ values only if you have no values.

The book burning idea was ignorant and very wrong – hence, all of the discussion in America about this subject.
Respect, however, is a two-way street. People cannot expect everyone to think like they do. Here’s the rub.

@amor patriae: GEN Petraeus is not trying to abridge anyone’s 1st amendment rights; rather, he is using his own 1st amendment rights as a U.S. citizen to speak out on an issue which directly affects the lives of his Soldiers. I served under GEN Petraeus during my deployment with the 101st Airborne Division in Iraq, and was proud to serve under a commander who took seriously the charge to take care of his Soldiers.

Hi,
I do agree with you who mentioned lets not lower ourselve to the level of murderers by burning books and so on, in a way the flag and book is only a cloth and paper what they mean is in the heart, they pay for the flag so in effect its thiers, like i can burn a life of Brian dvd i just bought or world cup flag i bout, its mine might hold country simple but lets move on and laught at them.
also by the way i have been in the same situation as the husband of the lady in egypt, i left egypt and never gone back in process of changing both my name and renouncing the egyptian citizenship now.

free speech is one thing but what all you people dont see is how that free speech effects the very people who protect that damn right you all want to holler about.
When you scream about those freedoms do you even think about the men and women who gave all they have for that freedom. Our freedoms are NOT about hate but about tolerance didnt you ever learn the golden rule? “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” if you expect to be accepted by the world society then you GOT to accept them. Treating people poorly will NOT help them treat you with respect.
