Man’s Best Dance Partner? Dancing Dog Goes Viral
ABC's Xorje Olivares reports from New York:
It’s the kind of viral video that will have you barking with excitement, the incredible sight that will leave you rolling over from laughter—a dog named Carrie dancing to the Latin rhythms of merengue.
In a new video making the rounds today, Carrie can be seen with her owner and dance partner José Fuentes dancing about before a crowd gathered at a parking lot.
Dressed in a green sequined outfit lined with gold tulle, Carrie turns and dips like a seasoned pro, remaining on her hind legs for the majority of the three-minute routine to the song, ‘El Baile del Perrito,’ or ‘The Doggie Dance.’
How do you get a dog to dance like that? Fuentes has said that he doesn’t reward Carrie with treats – just love and affection.
Carrie and Fuentes performed a similar routine on Univisión’s popular variety show ‘Sabado Gigante’ starring Chilean media icon Don Francisco. Oddly enough, actress Sofia Vergara of ABC’s ‘Modern Family’ was on hand to witness the spectacle.

Sorry, don’t mean to be a curmugin, but honestly I find it abhorent to force any animal to do tricks for people’s amusement, let alone man’s best friend.(Dog is God spelled backwards.) Animals are innocent, and when compelled to “perform” at the whim of their owner will of course do so, and perhaps will even do so without minding to much in the process. Whatever makes their owner happy is the Dog’s motto. The question is however, how is that dog’s inherent DIGNITY as an individual (creature from God)in his own right, being exploited and therefore diminished in the process just so man can have a few laughs at his expense? Sure the dog doesn’t seem to care, but make no mistake, whenever we humans take advantage of an innocent more vulnerable being than us, it is ultimately humans who are diminished in the end. For, every creature has their own unique purpose for being here, in their own unique way physically, mentally, emotionally and at a soul level. Animals were not created FOR mankind to simply lord over them in any way shape or form. Yet, when we believe we have some right to force animals to conform to something other than their own inherent nature, we do them and us an enormously irreverent disservice…whether we realize that consciously or not. Therefore, this video merely reinforces the erroneous belief that mankind somehow has more rights than an animal, due to the very unnatural performance being asked from this dog. Something the dog would not normally do on his own, but for the fact that some human forced it upon him to learn. The question that must be asked here is, How would anyone of us like it if someone asked us to perform an unnatural act that goes against our very nature? Would we feel violated, exploited, taken advantage of? Well, animals have feelings too, whether they show it or not. Only in a society where all reverence has been lost for the Nature of things as SACRED, in a world dominated by all things material and objectified could such a video become so unfortnately popular. Very SAD indeed.

Really, are you serious? You have way too much to worry about. Did you read the article, the owner doesnt even train the dog with treats, just affection! Also, do you even believe in “having a pet” because it would seem worse to walk a dog with a leash than dance with it! After all who wants to be a prisoner for the amusement of others by being on a leash your whole life. I would suggest you have a brownie and relax!! ;)

This guy needs to get a job training animals for Hollywood. It looks like the dog is enjoying every minute of it!

I think the dog is quite happy–her tail is wagging almost non-stop! I think this was marvelous!

I am not one for musical freestyle but this impressive. I train dogs so I find all the queues just amazing. I can say this is a once in a lifetime dog. Great job!

Yes, it’s very cute, very funny. But I also found it a little disturbing on some level…it’s like a real-life version of that “King of the Hill” episode with the dancing dogs, which also weirded me out.
And ITA with PP regarding how happy the dog looks. And Kathryn, I had a dog that did lots of cool tricks that she really enjoyed learning and performing for others. She seemed so proud of herself, and that was what made it fun for us to watch. Honestly, I don’t think that dogs are as concerned about their “dignity” as you might think.
I’m also impressed with the doggy’s endurance. That was a long performance for her to be on only two legs pretty much the whole way through.

This dog is too smart for that stupid “dress.”

Wow, I didn’t think this was serious when BBC’s Mongrels ripped dog dancing apart. I don’t think what they had to say about it is suitable for a user comment, so I’ll let y’all look it up online.

Awesome performance even though I find dogs in dresses quite repulsive. If anyone here has ever had the expense of dog orthopedic surgery, you might want to refrain from subjecting your large breed’s hips, knees and backs to this type of stress.

The dog is wagging it’s tail the whole time!!She obviously enjoys what she is doing and looks very well taken care of!!!Kudo’s to the owner for teaching her this, because if the dog didn’t want to participate, because of her dignity she wouldn’t do it!! He’s not forcing her. There are so many dogs out there that are abandoned, abused, starved or killed, and so many many more that needs a home!!

OK… lets be real here. This is coming from a third world country(English is not language #1).
Is that dog (genuis dog) motivated by reward and love, or punishment???
Despite obvious edits to maintain timing, (As in third world asia with painting elephants)
this dog is driven by avoiding pain and punishment. I challenge the world to uncover the whole story. I am truly sorry if I accuse wrongly, yet vindication offers nothing more than how low mankind can descend.
third world countries should be rendered mute and castrated!!

JForc500, you obviously know very little about golden retrievers, who are very smart, sensitive creatures motivated by love and affection, not punishment and pain avoidance. They love to be active and play, especially when the play involves horsing (or “doggying”) around with their person. I’ve been around goldens for 20 years, so I know this man could not have gotten this dog to do all these amazing things without being patient with and kind to her. Goldens love attention! Moreover, they sense when they are bringing joy to people and love every minute of it. Ever seen the movie Air Bud? That dog may have learned a few tricks from a cruel master, but ultimately, he refused to perform under threat. It was when he found a boy and a family who loved him that he became a star.

I honestly think the dog was having a fun time. Her tail was wagging away and she looked at her owner with utter devotion. There’s no slavery here.

@Kathryn
yes i understand your point but look at that dog! She is SMILING and WAGGING her tail. Seems that she is not mistreated or trained by force to do that. She was loved by affection learning how to do that.

If you can’t enjoy this then you will not enjoy anything in life. After all the Deg is loving it. Wagging his tail through and through….
EXCELLENT VID

This is for JFork500. I only can smile in front of your incredible ignorance. It seems to me that you have never been out of your country, that is the only explanation for your words. To compare Chile, “a third world country”, as you say (where at least 30 of its students have never been killed by one of their own classmate) with a Asia country having elephants, can only be made by an great ignorant. I recommend you to grab a map and a history book…it is easy to do, your brain is not going to boil. Thew owner of the dog said his method was “love and affection”, but it seems you don´t know to read your own language….

It may seem “unnatural” for a dog to dance, but with God, all things are possible, for He holds all wisdom and power in His hands and gifts not only humans, but also animals with special talents. I believe that Mr. Fuentes gave a lot of love, kindness, and patience to his dog, Carrie, which is why she is so extraordinary. How we treat our pets is how they show themselves.
