The Gaffe Reels: Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer
You may have caught the debate in the Arizona governor's race last night, which featured a moment that's sure to make you wince — especially if you're a supporter of sitting Governor Jan Brewer. During her opening statement in the debate against state attorney general Terry Goddard and others, Brewer suddenly stopped speaking, looked down at her hands, and emitted a strangled giggle. And there were more awkward moments after the debate, when Brewer was asked to support her claims that murderous illegal immigrants are leaving headless bodies in the Arizona desert. Brewer again froze and, without answering, turned and walked away. So how bad was Brewer's botch-up? As a popular governor whose support for the state's tough anti-illegal immigrant law has won her great favor, does Brewer face new political vulnerability from the slip? Or should everyone be allowed a momentary brain freeze — professional politicians included?

Sarah Brewer?????

She should not be allowed a brain freeze. She is making serious allegations about immigrants murdering people and leaving them headless. She needs to provide the proof immediately. She apparently is lying and if she is capable of making up such a lie she will lie about less serious issues as well. Maybe shes going senile or she may have been drugged up.

She’s either drunk, dumb, or unprepared. Regardless, she’s an embarassment to Arizona.

She’s done the best for Arizona.
Posted by: Christopher | September 3, 2010, 1:54 am 1:54 am
Wow, you really think she’s the best the Arizona can come up with? That was downright embarrassing. Lost her train of thought? It was her opening statement and she could barely string together a coherent thought. As governor of the state for 600 days, she really should be over any stage fright. People generally get nervous and lose their train of thought when they don’t know what they are talking about.

Jan Brewer is unqualified to be the governor of any state let alone a state that requires intelligent and active solutions to job creation, economic stimulus, education, and border safety. She does not even have a handle on the English language, she sounds ignorant and condescending. Her campaign for governor is nothing more than one of fear, ignorance and hate.

Christopher – lose your train of thought and enter your comment twice? I just hope no racist Tea Party supporters are piloting my airline.

Focusing too much on the incumbent governor’s pause detracts from the main point, the debate (and possibly future debates).
I find it interesting that Gov. Brewer claimed that SB 1070 had “united America,” and that the attention it has garnered from the Federal government is good, especially with the recent federal court decisions. Hopefully Brewer agrees to conduct a few more debates; I’m interested in hearing more of her reasoning for the immigration law in regards to border security, especially with Goddard’s heavy focus on the aspect and Brewer’s implications that the law does nothing to beef up border security. In the debate itself it seemed like Brewer was just dancing around the topic.
Posted by: D.Fu | September 3, 2010, 2:38 am 2:38 am
Brewer has said she will absolutely not do any more debates. You can’t blame her, her blunders are a reflection of her unintelligible understanding or effectiveness toward governing. SB 1070 is a distraction in itself, a politically motivated law nestled in frustration but mostly racism. It will not succeed to accomplish any hope there is for increased safety at the border and it will hurt many people who give to our communities way more than they would every take and I think it will hurt those very people who want the law. The fact is with or without SB 1070 there is a dangerous and inhuman climate for people who have journeyed here seeking to join a nation of opportunity just like every single one or your ancestors that were not here before 1492. If Arizona wants a future then there needs to be more vision that just to abuse a group human beings simply to make us feel better about issues in our lives that they actually do not have an effect on.

Oh well, she’s just like 90% of the rest of us….that’s why she’s ahead in the polls…..

This is why I left the Republican Party. It’s become the party of know-nothingism, McCarthyism, racism and voodoo economics.
People like Brewer, Palin, et al just make attacks. They don’t offer evidence, they don’t offer solutions except to hate the “brown”. I guess the Jews are still off limits for now but given their pace it probably won’t be too long before they go after them as well.
Posted by: affableman | September 3, 2010, 5:02 am 5:02 am
What part of ILLEGAL don’t you people understand? Watch the news. Read the news. Find a news source. There is violence on the border. There are daily kidnappings, there are bullets flying! I have lived there. Illegal immigration is ILLEGAL! Damn what part don’t you understand??? Jan Brewer, I salute you for having the guts that SO FAR none of the other infiltrated states have had. California is floundering, Texas is overrun with anchor babies. OPEN your eyes people. It doesn’t matter the reason, it IS against the laws of the United States to come here illegally! Geeze!
Posted by: mkloog | September 3, 2010, 5:47 am 5:47 am
So then your point is that which is against the law is illiegal. That is deep.
Posted by: Finn | September 3, 2010, 6:21 am 6:21 am
Well, it seems to be a point that is over the head of many on here!
Posted by: mkloog | September 3, 2010, 6:29 am 6:29 am
Brewer seemed to be in a bit of a haze, unable to respond or unwilling to respond, so going back to her talking points and public persona, rather than having an honest discussion of issues. Arizona needs a talking head about like it needs a natural disaster. Not at all. The Dem candidate seemed quite able to hold a thought and discuss an issue, I suspect he would wear well over time and serve the state well.
Posted by: Arthur | September 3, 2010, 6:30 am 6:30 am
So in other words its ok for the president of the United States to be unable to string together two coherent words in the same sentence without a teleprompter but OMG the Arizona Governor had a moment. You hypocrite. I wonder where this need to give away our country comes from. Was it your upbringing? Or have you never really had to deal with reality?

But she is a typical white person, who, if she sees somebody on the street that she doesn’t know, you know, there’s a reaction that’s been bred in our experiences that don’t go away and that sometimes come out in the wrong way, and that’s just the nature of race in our society.”
“Come on! I just answered, like, eight questions.” –exasperated by reporters after a news conference

For Panola- During the campaign Obama won all three presidential debates by a wide margin, and there was no teleprompter. Whether you approve of Obama or not has nothing to do with the embarrasing performance of Brewer. She almost seemed on something. That was her opening statement, something that is supposed to be rehearsed and well thought out. I’d hate to think what would happen in a state emergency if she gets a 3 am phone call.
Posted by: carolynjones | September 3, 2010, 8:33 am 8:33 am
Panola siad it right. Our idiot president screws up all the time but she screws up and you guys jump all over it. At least she is trying to save Arizona a lot of tax dollars by getting the illegals out of there. Illegal means what it says. Can you understand it. If you think this bill is wrong you need to pay their bills and pay for their food and medical bills. People can be so stupid.

This woman’s education consists of attending a community college!?! Can’t Arizona find someone smarter than this to lead their state? What a total embarrassment for the state and our country. We seem intent on voting in the least competent people to represent our interests. She could never get hired for a private sector position – too dumb.
Posted by: Ron | September 3, 2010, 8:36 am 8:36 am
Not surprised about no debates after this one (assuming that she can actually push them off) but it seems that the latest tool for politicians to get elected is to avoid answering any questions about their views or policies when directly asked about them. It’s a dangerous trend. While you may support some of the candidates positions you may not get a clear sense of who they are until after they get into office. Supporters of 1070 will run with her until election day but it was apparent when she signed it into law that this poor woman was not in charge and was being guided by forces beyond her control. If elected to a full term I suspect that she’ll stumble as badly as she did at the debate. There are far more qualified Republicans in Arizona who could better serve the state than Jan Brewer.
Posted by: Dennis | September 3, 2010, 8:47 am 8:47 am
I guess that’s what happens when you don’t have a teleprompter in front of you……I support Jan because you liberals can say what you want, but she knows the meaning of the word illegal and has done all she can to stop them….hope she runs for President, anyone would do a better job than Obama.

Eh, while I don’t support SB 1070 at all, you have to hand it to Brewer- the attention it’s already received has already jump started a massive immigration debate, so she’s already been successful. Of course, the law itself does usurp the federal government, no matter what anyone’s personal opinion of the feds are. In the wake of all of this, it seems clear that at least the GOP will be constantly pushing for this kind of crazy rhetoric (see the 14th amendment). As for the slip-ups, Brewers’ was much worse than any of Obama’s that have been posted here, and let’s not forget the slip-master, G.W. Bush, and hers was even worse than most of HIS! Political suicide for sure.

@mkloog, I don’t call this a flub. I call it the truth.
“It’s not surprising, then, they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.” –explaining his troubles winning over some working-class voters

YES THE TRUTH!!! Finally a politician in a weak moment said the truth, which is that many poorly educated lower class whites (but also, importantly, Beck/O’Reilly “law and order” types and christian conservatives) “cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment.” That is Brewer’s ticket to re-election in a nutshell!! Smart liberals are a minority in America. It took two terms of Bush, Iraq and massive economic turmoil to get one into the white house. Won’t happen again.
Posted by: Andrew | September 3, 2010, 9:47 am 9:47 am
She is Human and is fighting against ignorance, the idea of entitlement and the federal government (and the invitations its sending to foreign governments about fighting a states right to protect itself.) Sarah Palin and Brewer are both tough, strong, smart women, why else would the liberals need to attack them so viciously. The federal government needs to either do their job or shut up and get out of the way. If anyone has a problem with the US having the right to an immigration policy, then maybe we should adopt that used in Mexico – we would have a right to know whether you are in the country illegally or not – but with NO RIGHTS! Funny we aren’t having a problem with Canadian illegals…hmmmm interesting. Viva Brewer and Arizona!

She actually refused to answer a question about how she has avoided taking responsibility for lying about desert beheadings.
If she won’t come clean about something so obvious, what else is she lying about? Probably about how much lost revenue and legal fees her PR stunt, SB1070 is costing the state every day.
But, it appeals to fools, so maybe it is part of her campaign strategy.
Posted by: Karl Harshman | September 3, 2010, 10:17 am 10:17 am
Daniel – a state doesn’t have the right to protect itself. That’s what the whole constitutional convention thing was about in 1787. This federal government (and Bush’s and all prior) is unable to “do its job” because stopping illegal immigration, like stopping marijuana and cocaine trade and consumption, is impossible. What we have here is posturing by radical republicans like Brewer to attack a liberal president like Obama. It is theater. And Brewer will win (at least in Arizona) because fear of alien invasion and appeals to patriotism and law-and-order sells better than appeals to tolerance and common sense. USA! USA! USA!
Posted by: Andrew | September 3, 2010, 10:32 am 10:32 am
Dear Panola, President Obama — in fact, anybody in the public arena — will make a linguistic mistake from time to time. That’s not the point. The fact is Obama has the courage to face the press and risk making a gaffe. Jan Brewer has neither the guts to face the press or the brains to answer the questions. Guts and brains, guts and brains. Brewer runs to the safety of Fox News rather than face the legitimate media. Stupid and cowardly is no way to govern.

after reading some of the comments of her supporters, I get this picture in my head of them putting their hands over their ears and going la-la-la-la-la I can’t hear you, la-la-la-la.
But, seriously, all politicans slip from time to time, look at Biden, the difference with him is that when he messes up, he doesn’t stop to collect himself, he just keeps going. I’m sure Jan is going to win, with the built up over illegal immigration this election year, there’s enough people out in Arizona that see her as a champion of immigration( I have a feeling she’s a bit biased towards those from the south, but that’s just me).

I am a medical professional who just recently retired. I have seen all the video of Governor Jan Brewer and Terry Goddard debate and her sudden confrontation with reporters following the debate. Cautious Red Alert Alarms are going off.
I did feel she displayed some possible exisitng medical issues. I am limited medically evaluating her presenting symptoms. But was alarmed witnessing two separate incidents where she displayed symptoms of possible existing mental dificiencies. Cause? The possibiliy of dementia onset/Alzheimers disease does exist for consideration. But factually multiple causes do exist. My first easiest question would be what medications is she currently on, any medications she took just prior to debate? Facts of the presenting symptoms do exist. Jan Brewer was indeed displaying positive medical symptoms of mental dificiency that evening. Nervous reaction to debate would not cause the continued symptoms she displayed. I sincerely hope she seeks medical help for evaluation. And do wish her the best.
Now the big hot topic Brewer claim- beheaded corpses found in Arizona. This Brewer statement/claim has been investigated extensively. Answer below.
(1)All forensic medical examiners in Arizona were interviewed.
(2)No beheaded corpses were ever found in Arizona. Beheaded corpses have only been found in Mexico.
One other claim she made during national media televised interviews – found false. Claimed crime rate is up Arizona. I was shocked to discover not true either. Not what I expected. Answer below.
(1)Crime has actually decreased in Arizona. Except for areas in rogue Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s juriosdiction. Conservatinve Think Tank Goldwater Institue did two extensive studies on Joe Arpaio. Damaging report – sheriff is not actually providing good police authority protection for residents of Arizona. Real crimes are ignored, not invetigated. Also Arizona newspaper East Valley Tribune reporters won Pulitizer Prize for their multiple reports on Joe Arpaio’s police work. Also quite damaging. Multiple other documents support same conclusion.
Arpaio is presently under two investigations
(1)possible racial profiling . Feds are inundated with complaints – investigation was started 2008 by President Bush and has continued. Feds have been pressured now to finally act. Legally Feds are required to. And Sheriff Joe Arpaio is not cooperating and has always said he wouldn’t, despite his now claims to media saying he is. This claim of his is not true. Has long history of effectively using media releases to his advantage. See Goldwater Institute reports and East Valley Tribune reports, etc.
(2)Federal Arizona investigation for possible abuse of power. Lodged complaints are mostly from legal residents/political officials of Arizona. Includes 4 county judges, entire board of supervisors, county manager, business owners, multiple newspaper owners/reporters, county public employees, superintendent of schools, etc, etc, etc. Two Arizona judge decisions found Sheriff Joe Arpaio abusing power of his office – found using his office to pursue personal vendetta against people filing criminal charges, arresting, etc. . Arpaio cohart partner, former Maricopa County Attorney Andrew Thomas, ius also being investigated by Arizona State Bar and Feds too – State Bar case referred to Supreme Court as case considered more serious.
I am Republican and will be watching what is going on in Arizona. I am for illegal immigation reform. But I am alarmed. And have found a “three ring crazy circus” going on in Arizona. I am quite concerned. Too many proven lies, deception, third world thug type governance rule of Arizona discovered. Retirement has afforded me more time to research the real facts, not just what politicians/officials/law enforcement
publicly want us to know. Even the famous Sheriff Joe Arapio is a politician – he is elected by people.
He is not in a for hire poistion where he gets fired if he doesn’t do his job. See he is quite savvy about getting poor residents to believe he is, when he really isn’t. Legally very difficulty to control a rogue elected sheriff. Found he uses media quite well for his personal gain professionally and also privately making money off his national media coverage with his business pursuits which all are releated to his positiion as sheriff. This could be considered a huge positive for him, but his real police management record & multiple police actions do not support what he is touting.

Brewer has never been neither bright nor articulate, but has managed to rise in the Republican ranks by supporting the party line. If the press will examine other clips (like the meeting with Obama regarding SB1070), they would find someone who has difficulty expressing ideas, or for that matter, examining ideas presented to her. Some have suggested it’s her age, or perhaps Alzheimer’s is setting in as it did with another Arizona governor, Evan Mechem); but really, she’s always been slow. We might just see (Mills) an opponent in the primary, come out as an independent in the general. Brewer doesn’t have the support of the LAMARS (Libertarian Activists Masquerading as Republicans) who are currently dominating Arizona’s republican Party.

Here are some interesting details regarding Jan Brewer’s son, which apparently have been kept out of the public spotlight: “Ronald Brewer, 46, is not just mentally ill. He was deemed criminally insane in 1990, following a July 1989 arrest and subsequent indictment for sexual assault and kidnapping of a Phoenix woman. According to a Phoenix Police Department report dated July 29, 1989, Brewer, then an unemployed 25-year-old, forced his way into a woman’s apartment on West Indian School Road and threatened to hurt her “real bad” if she didn’t engage in sexual acts, including performing ********.” Because some severe mental illnesses are hereditary in nature, it does makes one wonder what was going on through her head during that debate… Something like that would weigh heavily on the mind of almost any parent, especially a high profile politician who must protect their reputation zealously.

Or Dan Quayles, or Joe Biden’s, Nancy Pelosi, Blagojevich, LBJ, Reagan, etc
If there was TV then, who knows we could add Lincoln, McKinley, Coolidge, who knows to the list. We seem to have put undo emphasis today on debate performance as a qualification for a political office. It is like using a Home Run Derby to judge fitness for being a MLB Player. As far as debates, if the media likes the debater, the gaffes are either cute, funny or overlooked (Biden, Bill Clinton, Gore, Obama). If they do not like them they are used no-so-subtly as proof of ignorance (Quayle, Bush, Palin, now Brewer). Nancy Pelosi and Jan Brewer both have stumbling, rambling, sometimes incoherent speaking styles. Pelosi gets a pass, Brewer does not. Both are once attractive, youth-fading fast 60-70ish women. Search the internet for disparaging remarks. Look who gets more.
Debating skills, and being clear on issues do count , but is it a show-stopper? Is it all-powerful? If that was the case, Bill Bradley would be president.

She didn’t have Arpaio and Russell Pearce there to prop her up. Her campaign is not for governor but for power grab. She is not qualified to be governor and while I am at it– Arizona needs a lieutenant governor position. I have lost count as to how many times the state secretary has inherited the governor’s office. Remember Jane Hull and the alternative fuel fiasco? Can you imagine what a pawn Brewer will be (has been)for Arpaio,Pearce et al?Just look at the private prison scandal– conflict of interest with re: to sb1070. They are locking people up for profit (reminds me of the 30 pieces of silver) and separating families for personal gain. What a mercenary bunch!!!

I was quite concerned as I kept replaying these videos of Governor Jan Brewer’s debate performance and those “hot topic” issues. I am a recently retired medical medical professional.
I do hope she seeks medical help. And yes, she did display symptoms for possible mental deficiencies. Her long history of political experience would have/should have given her the mental competence to deal with any stress associated with a political opponent debate. Experience did not.
Cause?? Many possible causes exist. Symptoms displayed, reveal she positively had medical caused mental alertness deficiency present that evening.
I hope she gets help. Would I vote for her?? No I have decided could not take any chances after this performance. Too many medical questions exist, since she displayed too many symptoms of patients that attempt to cover up their mental deficiencies. And is a commonly seen natural human defense mechanism. I would be too concerned about early onset dementia or Alzheimers Disease. So sad to watch her.
