“World News with Diane Sawyer” Draws Largest Demo Audience in Nearly a Year

ABC Narrows Weekly Total Viewing Gap with NBC to Smallest Margin in 6 Weeks and Demo Gap to Smallest Margin Since October

ABC Outperforms CBS by 2.22 Million Total Viewers and 550,000 Adults 25-54

For the week of January 17, 2011, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 8.91 million Total Viewers and a 2.1 rating/7 share/2.59 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.  For the second week in a row, “World News” recorded a season-high performance in Adults 25-54.  The program turned in its best demo number in nearly 1 year – since w/o 02/08/10.

For the third time in the last four weeks, “World News” improved on the year-ago week (w/o 01/18/10) in both Total Viewers (+5%) and Adults 25-54 (+6%).  

For the second straight week, “World News” shrank the margins with “NBC Nightly News” versus the previous week and same week last year in both Total Viewers (-20% and -40%, respectively) and Adults 25-54 (-40% and -57%, respectively).  In fact, “World News” delivered the smallest Total Viewer (1.09 million) gap in 6 weeks and even smaller Adults 25-54 (340,000) gap with “NBC Nightly News” in nearly 3 months – since w/o 12/06/10 and w/o 10/25/10, respectively. 

“World News” defeated the “CBS Evening News” by 2.22 million viewers and by 550,000 Adults 25-54, increasing its week-to-week margins over the CBS program by +10% in viewers and by +28% in Adults 25-54.  For the third time in the last four weeks, “World News” built on its year-ago margins over the “CBS Evening News” in both Total Viewers (+13%) and Adults 25-54 (+31%).

Last week “World News” featured Diane Sawyer’s exclusive interview with Mark Kelly, the husband of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords who was shot during the mass shootings in Tucson, AZ. “World News” also covered Chinese President Hu Jintao visit to the U.S.
