Ratings Report for ABC News’“Nightline” For the May 2011 Sweep

NIGHTLINE WINS MAY SWEEPS

“Nightline” ranks No. 1 across all key demos: Total Viewers, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49

ABC News’ “Nightline” ranks No. 1 across all key demos: Total Viewers (4.354 million), Adults 25-54 (1.731 million) and Adults 18-49 (1.331 million), according to Nielsen Media Research.  May 2011 represents the first time ever that “Nightline” is ranking No. 1 in Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-49 during a May Sweeps period, beating both NBC’s “The Tonight Show” and CBS’ “The Late Show.”  “Nightline” is poised to take the top spot in Adults 25-54 for the 3rd straight sweeps period, as the ABC program also ranked No. 1 in November 2010 and February 2011.  

Compared to May 2010, “Nightline” is up by +12% in its Total Viewers and by 3% in Adults 25-54.  This represents the ABC latenight programs’ largest overall May Sweep audience in 11 years and best Adults 25-54 performance during the month in 5 years – since May 2000 and May 2006, respectively.  

Versus the previous sweeps period (February 2011), “Nightline” is growing by +13% in Total Viewers and by 5% in Adults 25-54.  Looking at all sweeps periods, “Nightline” is posting its strongest performance in both measures in 10 sweeps periods – since November 2008.    

“Nightline” is topping NBC’s “The Tonight Show” in May 2011 by +378,000 Total Viewers (4.354 million vs. 3.976 million) and by +74,000 Adults 25-54 (1.731 million vs. 1.657 million), beating the NBC program during a May sweeps period for the first time in 16 years – since May 1995.

“Nightline” is ahead of CBS’ “The Late Show” during the month by +834,000 Total Viewers (4.354 million vs. 3.520 million) and by +208,000 Adults 25-54 (1.731 million vs. 1.523 million), turning its largest Total Viewer margin in 12 years and biggest Adults 25-54 lead in 11 years during the course of a May sweep – since May 1999 and May 2000, respectively.  For all sweeps period, “Nightline” is seeing its widest Total Viewer advantage over “The Late Show” in nearly 11 years – since July 1999.
