“ABC World News” Slashes Total Viewing Gap with NBC to Smallest Margin in 2 Months; “World News” #1 Newscast on Wednesday

Year-to-Year, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” Cuts Both Total Viewing and Demo Gaps with NBC – Slashes Weekly Total Viewing Gap to Smallest Margin in 2 Months 

On Wednesday, “ABC World News” was the #1 Evening Newscast Among Both Total Viewers and Adults 25-54

“ABC World News” Delivers Strongest Performance in 7 Weeks in Both Total Viewers and Key Demo

ABC Outperforms “CBS Evening News” by 2.04 Million Viewers and by 441,000 Adults 25-54 – Marking Largest Total Viewing and Demo Advantages in 5 Months

For the week of October 10, 2011, “ABC World News with Diane Sawyer” averaged 7.53 million Total Viewers and a 1.7 rating/6 share/2.07 million among Adults 25-54, according to Nielsen Media Research.  Growing over the prior week by +3% in Total Viewers and by +4% in Adults 25-54, “ABC World News” hit a season-high with its strongest performance in 7 weeks in both Nielsen measures – since w/o 8/22/11. For the 4th time in 4 weeks this season, “World News” was up over the year-ago week in both Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+3%).

On Wednesday (10/12/11), “ABC World News” was the No. 1 evening newscast outdrawing “NBC Nightly News” in both Total Viewers (+83,000  - 8.035 million vs. 7.952 million) and Adults 25-54 (+52,000 -  2.271 million vs. 2.219 million).

“ABC World News” decreased its week-to-week Total Viewer margin with “NBC Nightly News” by -11% (510,000 vs. 572,000), posting its smallest overall viewer gap with the NBC program in 8 weeks - since w/o 8/15/11In addition, for the 3rd time of the 4 weeks of the new season, “World” News” narrowed its year-ago margins with “Nightly News” in both Total Viewers (-10% – 510,000 vs. 567,000) and Adults 25-54 (-8% – 262,000 vs. 284,000).

“ABC World News” outperformed “CBS Evening News” by 2.04 million Total Viewers and by 441,000 Adults 25-54, scoring its largest Total Viewer and news demo advantages over the CBS program since in over 5 months - since w/o 5/9/11 and 4/25/11, respectively.

Season to date, “World News” is up in both Total Viewers (+4%) and Adults 25-54 (+5%) compared to the same point last season.  In fact, the ABC newscast is up the most year to year in the key adults news demo from the same point last season (NBC is up by +2%; CBS is up by +1%).  In addition, “World News” has cut its season-to-date gaps with “NBC Nightly News” in both Total Viewer (-8%) and Adults 25-54 (-20%) versus its year-ago season gaps, posting its smallest margins (573,000 and 248,000, respectively) with the NBC program in 3 years – since the 2008-09 season.

Note: David Muir anchored “World News” on Wednesday and George Stephanopoulos anchored on Thursday. Friday’s broadcast featured a report from Diane Sawyer’s special “A Hidden America: Children of the Plains.”
