The helping hand a Delaware man offered to a stranger lugging a TV down his street inadvertently thwarted a burglary of his own house, police say.

The man, whose name was not released by police, returned home from work around noon last Wednesday when he noticed Gary Hairston, 35, carrying a flat screen television down his Wilmington street.

The homeowner offered to help Hairston carry the heavy TV, but noticed something strange when Hairston declined his help, according to police. The homeowner also noticed that the front door of his home was wide open.

The resident quickly began to chase Hairston while simultaneously calling 911. Hairston jumped into a getaway car allegedly driven by 28-year-old Andrea Johnson, according to the Delaware News Journal .

The two were caught by police not long after they drove away.  Johnson surrendered to authorities but Hairston had to be subdued with a stun gun after he jumped out of the car and tried to run away.

Hairston was arrested and charged with burglary, possession of burglary tools, criminal impersonation, resisting arrest and other related charges. Hairston, who gave police a fake name, was also wanted on several unrelated warrants.

Johnson was charged with conspiracy.
