Wearing a smile and baseball cap, an apron emblazoned with “Gabby,” Rep. Gabrielle Giffords served a Thanksgiving meal to service members and retirees at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base in her hometown of Tucson, Ariz.
It is the first constituent event she has held since she was shot on Jan. 8 during an event outside a Tucson supermarket, according to her office.
Giffords was joined behind the buffet by her husband, retired astronaut, Mark Kelly. She used only her left hand to serve, a sign of the physical injuries that persist more than 10 months after that January day.
The congresswoman has been in Tucson since Tuesday visiting family and friends.
Since the January shooting, which killed six people, Giffords has undergone therapy at TIRR Memorial Hermann in Houston. She has returned to Tucson only two other times, for Father’s Day and Labor Day weekends.
