Baby Seal Enters House and Naps on Couch

Annette Swoffer fell victim to a home invasion – of cuteness!

Lucky the seal pup, named for its knack for crossing busy streets without a scratch, wound up asleep on Swoffer’s couch after apparently entering her home through a cat door, Dec. 11, 2011, according to The New Zealand Herald.

Swoffer called the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals who contacted the Department of Conservation, which was already looking for the pup.

It seems, this isn’t the first time the department’s rangers have received calls about Lucky.

They reportedly have dropped the seal back into the sea twice before and they can’t say for certain that they won’t be at it again in the future.

Sounds like Lucky needs to go to the zoo if he keeps crossing busy streets. Maybe they can put a comfy couch in his habitat!

Maybe he doesn’t want to live in the ocean. He just wants to have some human companions and enjoy the human world. ABsolutely adorable.

Eventhough this story is very cute, it seems staged to me, how did this poor thing get UP on the couch????

this is the most lovable thing! :) I’m just afraid if s/he comes back from the sea, that s/he gets hurt, god forbid, somehow. :( I hope that Department of Conservation takes measures for that not to happen :)

Lucky has apparently become habituated to humans, most likely because he has no parent or was separated early on. He is really not a good candidate to be released back into the wild again because most likely, he will return someplace like that all over again. Next time, he may not be so lucky crossing a street. They should put Lucky in a place where he can receive care and be enjoyed by people.

Lucky is trying to tell you something. I do not live in this area and know nothing about seals, but animals are instinctive and know how to survive.

Posted by: Dorothy Melton | December 14, 2011, 8:36 pm 8:36 pm

Seals leave their young after two to three months, Lucky is “of age” to be by himself. Considering the rangers were already looking for him, My guess is that he is released in a controlled area that is observed and maintained by the rangers.

Why is a lamp propping up the pillow? hm.

Posted by: Martha NYC | December 14, 2011, 9:26 pm 9:26 pm

Aww… Can I have him? I remember biking the neighborhood (in Orlando, FL) and one day after a few days of rain, I saw two otter playing in a retention pond water entree pipe area. It was odd, but wonderful. The last time I saw any type of otters was a small family of four or five when I went canoeing on the Wekiva River. This is just so sweet.

Posted by: Warren | December 14, 2011, 9:32 pm 9:32 pm

Warren – I live near the Wekiva area, in Altamonte Springs, and I must say… I’ve never seen anything “odder”!

I’ll be on the lookout for otters and seals and other sea creatures, oh my! Apparently sightings are more common than one might think…

What is under the pillow in the second and third picture? It looks like a computer lamp. He is really cute and in need of a home if this is real. If not please leave the seal alone and let it do what seals do…

Posted by: Jamie | December 14, 2011, 10:32 pm 10:32 pm

Aww cute seal sleep beauty but seal need keep water . hugs cute seal :o)

Posted by: Venice | December 14, 2011, 10:35 pm 10:35 pm

And on top of the lamp being under the pillow in the second and third picture, not to mention how the poor thing got up on the couch, where is the dog and why was the dog ok with a strange animal in its house? (Owner said the seal came in through the dog door)

Posted by: Jamie | December 14, 2011, 10:41 pm 10:41 pm

They said it was a cat door, not a dog door. The cat could have been outside. They may have used something to prop up the pillow in an attempt to contain the seal or keep it from falling and hurting itself until someone got there to take him back to the ocean. As for how it got on the couch, a seal’s flippers are very strong. It could’ve used it’s back flipper to stand up against the couch, and its front flippers to pull itself up. Or it could have climbed from a lower table or ottoman onto the couch.

Or it could be staged and I’m too gullible for my own good. : )

Posted by: Jennifer | December 14, 2011, 10:57 pm 10:57 pm

This is why I always keep a club near the couch..

Posted by: joe | December 14, 2011, 11:03 pm 11:03 pm

Joe, you are a genius. That was soooo funny.

Posted by: Colleen | December 14, 2011, 11:14 pm 11:14 pm

This is total BS. A 12 inch baby seal makes its way on to a 24″ inch couch by itself? Sorry, but gravity applies to cute baby seals too. This seal may have been found in the house, but it was not found on the couch. This seal was placed on the couch by a person.

“Heidi Klum” that was soooo funny, too. That seal is really bringing out the best in people. Either shear adoration or such funny remarks.

Posted by: Colleen | December 15, 2011, 12:24 am 12:24 am

The article never says he climbed on the couch by himself, you people came to that conclusion on your own. Seal enters house via dog door, homeowner places him on couch where he enjoys a nap till the rangers pick him up.

Okay, who thinks most animals (water and land) should have a social security #, raise your hand?
Yep! me too. Now I jsut saw “America’s Funniest Home Videos,” where the terrior? was trained to tap the bell at the door with his or her paw when needing to go outside; Ithe trainers in San Diego, CA have trained Shamoo to dance a jig, here’s Lucky, and these stories go on and on. The most adorable, smart as humans ……… or smarter ????

Posted by: what's in a name | December 15, 2011, 4:01 am 4:01 am

The front of the couch isn’t shown, so it’s very possible there were items in front of it that made climbing onto the couch possible.

Posted by: CAW | December 15, 2011, 7:24 am 7:24 am

Better get some diapers on the little guy.
He’s cute now but what about when he takes up half the couch and sits there begging for fish all day? And he’ll probably need braces for his teeth or something. Do seals get fish breath?

Can we please somehow politicize this adorable baby seal story? It just doesn’t feel like the regular comment board if there is no enraged political arguments unfolding. Thanks.

Way to go, news…

Posted by: Mr. Biologist | December 15, 2011, 9:54 am 9:54 am

Just think he must have been raised by someone, and then dumped in the water.
He returns too often and seems to know the routine, put this guy in a zoo with a couch.
Or the zoo office, petting zoo, something, he clearly doesn’t want to be wild.

Posted by: Sunshinette | December 15, 2011, 9:55 am 9:55 am

I stand corrected… that is a baby fur seal.
Today I learned that fur seals are more closely related to sea lions than true seals…

Come on you guys lol. they are not 12 inches high. probably more like 24 inches. They climb all over the place :) Knowing New Zealand and the appalling record we have for not giving a stuff about animal welfare, they will keep putting him back on the beach until eventually he does get run over or something eats him. He really needs to be in a sanctuary.

Posted by: lynda | December 15, 2011, 12:39 pm 12:39 pm

awfully cute! can’t stop looking at the pics… want to pick up the little thing and cuddle!

Posted by: proiti roy | December 15, 2011, 1:25 pm 1:25 pm

Obviously the little guy is lonely and looking for comfort, and he is not scared of humans or he never would have entered a home…he needs to be put in a good aquarium where he can be with others of his kind and be cared for properly. Dumping him back into the sea is NOT working or smart, as he keeps coming back, one of these days he is not going to be lucky crossing a busy road!

He looks too young to leave his Mum. No doubt animals have humans beat for intelligence. They are not destroying their own environment by choice. As for the lamp. Maybe the homeowner placed it there after finding the pup sleeping on couch to have enough light to take picture. Lucky can invade my home anytime.

He donesn’t want to go into the water. Can’t you people see that? He is not of the sea for some reason maybe a genetic change but this seal is more like a cat of which I have 5. Let him stay in someones home or at least have a heart and put him in a zoo that is warm and has a warm coach.

Posted by: Cole | December 15, 2011, 11:07 pm 11:07 pm

Dido what someone said, i.e. “He doesn’t want to go into the water. Can’t you people see that?…”
I would have kept him and then take him fishing every day ;)
I would charge him a 20% fish tax to stay in my home ;)

Don’t be so silly! Of course seals & sea lions can climb up on things. If that pup is old enough to swim on his own, to get to land in the first place, then he/ she is old enough to climb up on the large rocks that stick out of the water, near the shore lines. Believe me, conquering that couch was much easier for Lucky than climbing up on those rocks ever was! When a seal or sea lion colony can’t find any peace & quiet, or privacy on a beach anywhere, they use groupings of large rocks to rest upon, groom, find mates, & feed their young. I’ve heard that many baby seals & sea lions die because of getting washed off of, or blown off of the rocks by storms & large waves, before they are big enough to swim on their own. He’s probably lost his family/ pod whatever you want to call it. If that’s the case, I don’t blame him/ her for wanting to come into the “human world”. After all, I’m sure the ocean’s a very scary place when you’re little, lost and alone. Every time they toss that poor little creature back out, into the sea, he’s probably thinking, “Hey! But, there are sharks out here!” (Not to mention a lot of other nasty things you wouldn’t want to run into). If he/ she’s smart enough to figure out that one might be able to rest inside a human’s house in relative safety, then I’m sure the traffic wasn’t that much of a challenge to Lucky. That little seal knows exactly what he/ she wants. Why not let him/ her have it? Put that cute little critter in a zoo & see if another seal family there will adopt him/ her. If not, then give Lucky his/ her own enclosure (with a waterproofed couch of course) & lots of TLC. :-)

And to the people asking “how did he get up there? It must be staged,” well… just how exactly do you think seals get onto sea rocks/ice floats? They’re quite capable of getting into higher places.

Posted by: Cdoc | December 16, 2011, 11:52 pm 11:52 pm

There’s nothing in the article saying he made it to the couch by himself. It says he made it in the cat door. At that point, they probably returned home, found a baby seal. Threw up a bit of cute-induced vomit, then put it on the couch while they called the dept of animal conservation.

Actually the person did right in calling in the SPCA and the Dept of Conservation. Not a good idea to touch a seal, they can inflict a nasty bite and also you’d be breaking so many federal laws its not funny. Sometimes they can be really tame though. One let me walk right up and take his picture. I wanted to take him home with me but i didnt.

Posted by: Connie | December 22, 2011, 6:47 am 6:47 am

Awww! Believe the homeowner used a high-intensity lamp to get good lighting for the camera. (You can see its base under the cushions in some of the photos.) Lucky could easily become a star at any nature sanctuary fortunate enough to have him / her, especially if the visitor center displayed a multimedia exhibit of these early excursions into the Land of the Two-Legged Creatures …
