Brother, Sister Reunited After 80 Years

ABC News' Jacob Beckman ( @jakebeckman) reports:

A brother and sister reunited last weekend for the first time in 80 years.

Doris Petre, 84, was separated from her brother Richard Waltrous, 87, when their mother died suddenly in 1931. The two were sent to live in separate homes and lost track of one another until last summer, when Petre used the Internet to track down her long-lost brother, now living in Connecticut, just a few hours away from her home in Brunswick, Maine.

Last Saturday, after months of planning and health-related delays, Waltrous came to Maine to see his sister again. He was 7 years old the last time he saw her, but he said he remembered the day vividly.

"I can remember her standing down there on the driveway, and I was in the back seat and I was waving to her until I got out of sight. That's the last time I saw her," Waltrous told ABC affiliate WMTW-TV in Portland, Maine.

Petre's daughter, Lee Gallant, told WMTW how much the reunion meant to her mother.

"I wrote in a card for my uncle, thank you for making my mom's life complete by coming here," Gallant said. "That's her last wish. She was almost going to give up. I said, 'No, Mom, this is going to happen.'"

The two say they aren't bitter about the lost time, but rather feel blessed to be a family again.
