I did a tour from 2004-2005 on Camp Victory and went back in 2007-2011 as a contractor til just recently I left this past Oct 2011 at Styker. So many memories of that place and not all pleasant of course but it was definately a city. One could do anything from ride a bike, fishing, take boxing/mma classes, race rc cars, take palace tours to even go hear some Poetry. There was even a 11 lane bowling alley on Liberty which didn't last long due to the outrageous prices, if you ask me. The list goes on and on. Soldiers, contractors, TCN's, etc didn't stand a chance of starving. There were two DFAC's(NOT DEFAC)on Victory alone literally a stones throw away from each other. At least four DFAC's on Liberty and depending on the smaller connecting camps in between like Stryker and Slayer they have one DFAC. Don't think for a second when I say DFAC we are taking about your typical Dinning Facility like back in the states on your average military base. The DFACs on the VBC consisted of Stir Fry lines, short order lines(fast food, burgers, fries, etc.)salad bars,hot/cold sandwich bars, international cuisines, coca colas, gatoraids, rip its, omelets made to order for breakfast, belgian waffles, steak and shrimp night, lobster tails...the list goes on and on. If that doesn't give an idea of how well fed the VBC was than picture Baskin Robbins ice cream for desert, oh and before I forget it was pretty much all you can eat once you got in there. I can go on forever with just my experiences on the VBC, granted most of my stories are better kept in my memories but I can still go on about my home away from home. The US pumped a lot of money into that place even right up to the very end just on food alone and fuel alone to keep that place going. The PX on Liberty was like a small Walmart back home. I mean picture walking in there and getting lets say a IPAD, a carton of smokes, the latest movie to come out on blue ray and a whole frozen pig. I can't make that stuff up. Just when your walking out of the PX with all your new goodies about to head back to your chu the CRAM goes off and reality slaps you in the face reminding you that you are far from home. All in all I don't regret a single moment I spent on the VBC. I can say I left my mark on Flintstone Palace...did you?

VBC... I lived in Freedom Village. Is it odd for us to miss this place? Perhaps we missed the times we shared with the military and contractors there.... I just hope the new tenants will protect any and all Americans left back to conduct the final withdrawal.

I was on Stryker from new years day 2008 till march of 2009. It truely was an impressive site and as large if not larger than most American small towns! I came back to VBC in march of 2010 on my second tour to find that it had been shutdown, but as I wandered back to see if my chu was still there I could suddenly hear and for a moment see all of those faces and sounds from the past, it was almost like going home again and yes my chu was still there but was next in line to be removed.

I was here for a little while myself, I have a few pics of the place and It was pretty nice compared to the other bases in Iraq. I worked out of one of the Palace's that was once Sadaam's sisters place. I think there are prolly 6 or 8 castles and several lakes.

Don't forget the Wal-Mart sized PX and the bazaar... I sent home many a gift from that place...

One memory that sticks out in my mind is the North End Pizza. It was the worst pizza I've ever eaten, but made me so happy to get a taste of 'home.'
