Sit, Stay, Aim, Fire. Dog Shoots Another Hunter

Billy E. Brown, 78, was in critical condition after being shot by his bulldog Eli while on a deer hunting trip.
A 78 -year-old Florida man is in critical condition after being shot by his dog while hunting, marking the second time a canine has shot its master in the past month.
Billy E. Brown was shot in the thigh Saturday by his bulldog Eli while Brown and his deer hunting buddy of 25 years were traveling to reach their hunting posts.
“[Brown's] friend was riding next to him in the front seat, with the dog and the gun in between them,” Gary Morse, spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told ABCNews.com
While traveling down a bumpy road, an “overly excited” Eli knocked the gun, shooting his master in the thigh, Morse said.
Brown, who is the general manager of Withlacoochee River Electric, an energy co-op, was rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tampa, Fla., where he underwent surgery and remained in critical condition in the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.
It’s not the first time a hunter has became the hunted.
Earlier this month, a 46-year-old unidentified Utah man was shot in the buttocks by his dog while on a duck hunting trip. The victim was setting decoys in the water at the time of the shooting.
“The dog got excited, was jumping around inside the boat and then it jumped on the gun. It went off, shooting the [decoy setter] in the buttocks,” Box Elder County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Kevin Potter told the Salt Lake Tribune.
Twenty-seven rounds of birdshot were removed from the man’s behind after the accident.
“Loaded guns in vehicles are a recipe for problems,” Morse said. “In our hunter safety course we talk about this at great length.”
Brown’s incident is still under investigation, which is protocol, according to Morse.

Good for the dog!! Karma…karma..karma… They seemed to have no regard for the innocent lives they have taken the past or were planning on taking on that fateful day! I saw good enough for you! No sympathy here…except for the dog who most likely will be punished, if not worse!!

I’m sorry but this is the dumbest thing I’ve ever read. The hunters were shot by the DOGS? Uh I don’t think so. The hunters were shot by their own negligence. Period. The duck hunter who is setting out the decoys and leaves his gun where it is both pointing at his own a$$ and where the dog can access it? Really stupid. And the old man was shot by his hunting partner, not the dog, since he was the one who put the gun down next to the dog, POINTING at the old man. REALLY STUPID HUNTING PRACTICES. Don’t blame the dogs!!

The dog? How about the gun owner who didnt have the safety on?!

Good boy! Give that dog an extra treat. And lessons on better aim.

Blaming the dog? Really?

silly dog should have known to unload the gun for transport…..

The headline is all wrong… These examples plus the recent death of a bear hunter killed by his partner while being attacked by a wounded grizzly that they went into the brush looking for, AND the recent innocent hiker killed by a bear hunter, mean the headline should read “Epidemic of Stupidity Sweeps Hunting Community”. But maybe that’s old news?

Was the dog’s name “Dick Cheney” by any chance???

The dog shot him?? Come on, only a stupid person drives ANYTHING with a loaded gun! This is basic gun safety 101, this is learned by most kids before age 10. I hope the best for him however!!!

I have been hunting for over 50 years and a majority of the time with a dog. i have never seen this happen, this guy shouldn’t hunt he is unsafe as is anyone who would hunt with him. Could they be blaming the dog?

Guns don’t kill people, dogs kill people. With guns. Seriously, these guys are being injured by their own carelessness with firearms – the dogs are just getting the credit.

Mike says (and it deserves repeating): “These examples plus the recent death of a bear hunter killed by his partner while being attacked by a wounded grizzly that they went into the brush looking for, AND the recent innocent hiker killed by a bear hunter, mean the headline should read ‘Epidemic of Stupidity Sweeps Hunting Community’.” A careless man may not be dangerous, but a careless man with a gun (and a couple of beers) is an accident waiting to happen.

Note to self…give dog better kibble and treats. I don’t have a gun in the house, but I’m sure she will figure out some way to do me in if I tick her off. Seriously, didn’t these guys ever learn not to ride around with a loaded gun or not to leave a loaded gun lying around. Darwin award candidates.

Gun owners are not stupid, but they are human beings and we get careless sometimes and make mistakes, plus you wouldn’t think a dog could pull the trigger with his paws

Why didn’t this hunter have his gun on safety. If he’s too dumb to do that 1. he shouldn’t own a gun and 2. he deserved to get shot.

It’s called putting the safety on when the gun is not in use. I am not a gun owner, I don’t shoot rifles or pistols, and even I know that this is only common sense. This is something that not many people have any more. The dog did not shoot the man.

For the sake of intentional redundancy, (see posts by Big Dan & Stretch) A basic firearm safety rule: DO NOT RIDE IN AN AUTOMOBILE WITH A LOADED WEAPON.

Never, never, never let your dog handle your gun. Has he been to gun safety courses or is he an obedience school dropout? He’s probably remembering those times you used a rolled up newspaper or forgot to buy him treats. Of course – he’s a heck of a lot smater than the two idiots in the story.

I never worried about making sure my gun was kept clear and safe when it was just me and the cats. When I got married and got a dog, I stopped keeping the gun loaded while in the house…especially since the breed we got is know for being vindictive.

Deserved.

I think these dogs are fed up with hunting! They would much rather be home ward, curled up and napping on the couch.

So Darwinian. Watch out the dogs are advancing faast with their knowledge of tools.

Seriously, it’s the idiot hunter’s fault. How does he like being shot? Just wondering.

I’ve called my congressman and asked him to introduce a bill requiring all hunting dogs to pass a hunter safety course and a background check before being allowed to accompany any human on a hunting outing. Obviously, there is an organized effort on the part of some animals to covertly reduce the number of gun owners, and possibly pick-up truck drivers. Some effort needs to be made to protect these innocent individuals.

A cat would have had better aim.

watch…i bet these two morons will both have incredibly short memories regarding the way it feels to be shot. in other words, they will be back out in nature killing more innocent animals, for no other reason but sport, in no time. hunting totally sucks…it’s not even fair. anything is easy to overtake, capture, and kill when you have a rifle or shotgun on your side. i love to shoot guns but i don’t shoot other living things. then again, i know that one’s personal power does not come from dominating, overpowering, and ending the life of another.
@ramp613b-lolololol. there were a lot of funny comments but that one made me laugh out loud.

This was years in the making:
The cat gets inside whens its cold or raining, Dog sleeps under truck.
Cat gets the “Here kitty-kitty, Dog get “Get over here, LAY DOWN’
Cat sits in your lap all night, petted and nice and warm, the dog gets “get down”
Only gonna put up with it for so long, reload and look for that cat.
