If you knew Dr. and Mrs. Rivera, your comments may differ. You can look beautiful in a picture and in reality, however, possibly Mrs. Rivera was unable to drive or drive long distances. Has anyone thought of that? She may have scar tissue on her retina as I do and driving can be difficult at times. In addition, carrying expensive jewelry and having a young man assistant you would think could provide an extra ounce of protection, however, in this case, he let greed take over and killed these wonderful people. They gave him a chance as it sounds like he did not come from much and he took advantage of Dr. and Mrs. Rivera. In addition, Dr. Rivera was my Doctor for MANY years while I lived in the Tampa Bay area. Mrs. Rivera was always at the office and treated everyone with respect and dignity. The entire family was wonderful. They will be dearly missed.

2hundredthousand

Dr Petit thought he lived in a quiet, safe neighborhood. Who knows how that story might have ended if he had been armed? No worse than it did end for sure.

Last week a young widow in Oklahoma found out that she needed a gun. Two men, at least one armed with a hunting knife tried to break into her house. One got in, got shot and died. She had spent 21 minutes on the phone with the 911 operator before the armed man got in. The cops still hadn’t got there. Thank God she had a gun to protect her and her infant son.

I can relay dozens of stories like that but I honestly don’t have time. Here are a couple you can verify if you want to:
-‘The Baxter Bulletin’ Mountain Home, Arkansas 6/14/2011 - 4:34am Man tries to break into the bedroom of a 4 year old girl. The mom called 911. Subject threw a concrete block through the window in the back door. The dad shot him three times with a .22. Man tried the window again, the dad shot him again with the same .22, t his time wounding him bad enough that he sat until the cops got there. (The dad needs a bigger gun)
-‘San Antino Express News’ San Antiono, Texas 5/23/2011 -- Thief burgularized a house and stole the homeowner’s Lexus. Returned to steal more. After he re-entered the home the homeowner’s son shot him with a shotgun, killing the criminal. (right size gun)

From personal experience I can tell you that if you ever need a gun, you will have one on you for the rest of your life. I hope and pray that I never have to harm another human being again, but I will not be a helpless victim.

Guns sales are up all over the country. Single women young and old are encouraged to acquire and learn how to use them. I never thought I would see this happen, but times are crazy and getting worse. My condolences to the families.

Why does the murder of a rich doctor and his wife require national attention? A lot of other people in the country were murdered and its a big "so what?" to the press.

I'm 55 and sell vintage jewelry from my home (actually from my car) and can't imagine why this 55 year old woman needed a driver and assistant at the age of 55 ...also, I am disabled and still don't have a driver and assistant. What a terrible tragedy and it just shows me why never to trust anyone anymore...especially in Florida...lived there 10 years and it is a melting pot of of criminal activity.

SHERRI & OONOGIL: So you both live in very safe areas but can't walk out of your front door or even go to sleep without being lethally armed? Seek help.

I live in a quiet ‘Leave it to Beaver’ middle class neighborhood of brick houses, 2-3 car garages and landscaped yards. Teenagers smile, wave and say hello as they walk to the park. In the summer time old folks wait until after dark to get their daily walk, feeling perfectly safe.
The town has less than 2,000 people, most of whom are in church Sunday morning, including the police officer on duty. His car is parked in front of the church so he’s available in case of an emergency. I swear the Chief of Police should be named Andy Taylor. It’s probably the most boring town in the US.

I still lock the doors at night and sleep with a .45 next to the bed. It’s the same gun I carry when I leave the house, hoping and praying that I never need it.
I’m comfortable and feel perfectly safe, but 60s tv shows aren’t real life. There are bad people in the world and bad things can happen, even in the most boring town in the US.
