God Bless the boy and his family,

What a nightmare, I lived in a building once and it also
had a trash chute and the door hinged down and had
an actuator on it to stop the door from opening all the way down.
You had to drop your trash bags at the top, similar to an old
metal post office box you would find on the street. It was designed
so a child would have a hard time climbing-up in this unit.

It sounds like the boy was looking inside the unit head first
and he lost his balance and went down head first. The inside
of these chutes are very smooth sheet metal and very straight
so the garbage bags will not catch on anything.
I'm sure he passed-out from the velocity of the fall before the impact.

Perhaps they will make a new standard in America for the chutes
and name it after the boy. Very sorry to read this story.

Thoughts and prayers for the family & friends,

It's nothing like in the movies where people slide down these chutes and have a fun ride to the bottom. RIP young man!

There has to be something to stop this from happening again, how sad is it that disabled children have to die this way.

It's not necessarily hindsight. I was in the hotel business in Chicago 20 years ago. We had similar chutes for dirty linen, and we were required by building inspectors to keep them locked, to prevent children from climbing into them. Not clear why that would not apply to this building as well, except that its on the Gold Coast and maybe rich people don't have to follow the rules.

Greg - Maybe ABCNews should have had some kind of a shield to prevent that.

Redwagon123, Garbage chutes are in comon areas off the hallways. It was not in the parents' apartment - thus the alarm going of - he left the apartment. Nobody is being a know-it-all and trying to make the parents feel worse. The neighbor is simply saying that maybe the building should have had some sort of device on the chute to prevent this. I disagree with her. After all, who would anticipate something like this.

Redwagon - that's exactly what I thought. Captain hindsight at it again.
