You don't just take a baby out of the hospital. No matter who you are. The baby is the hospital's responsibility while there. Catch some fresh air? Come on! Parents have to sign out the child if they want to take the baby out. It means officially discharged, and you are releasing the hospital from liability if something happens. Who knows if the mom and dad actually were not in good terms without anyone knowing, and dad just disappears. Now what? Everything now has to be on paper. You just don't ask verbally if you can take your child out. The hospital itself will get sued if something happens to the baby. Sure, it's your kid. Go home then and sign off. But don't expect you can bring your baby back. The baby will be officially discharged! It really just brings down to some people thinking they are beyond the rules. How many " ordinary people" do you think will attempt that kind of aggravation! Spoiled brat, spoiled adults. Chaos is absence of order. Folloow the rules!

The reason why no one likes Doctors' offices, hospitals, government offices, jails, etc. -- they don't listen, have their own agendas and have no regard for individual rights and freedoms being equal to their own.

Assaulting an on-duty nurse in New York State is a Class D felony. Nurses are in the same protected class as police officers.

Of all the people defending this man's actions the only defense you have is that that's his child so he can do whatever he wants. He is at the hospital so no he can't do whatever he wants whether he is the father or not. Hospitals have policies and procedure that patients agree to abide by when they are admitted to the hospital. Whether you think the rules are there to protect the patients or hospital is irrevelant as it relates to nurses. Nurses generally have no power over the rules and regulations of the hospital they work at but they have to follow the rules of the hospital or they won't have a job. Does anybody defending this man disregard the rules at your job bc it's a free country and you can do what you want? I think not bc just like those nurses you would like to keep your job. I've never seen anybody carrying a baby in a hallway on a maternity floor at a hospital. Yes you can hold a baby in your arms IN THE ROOM. Clearly this man just felt he could do what he wanted. If he didn't know it was against the rules to take the baby off the unit then he would not have turned off the baby tracker. As far as someone's comment about the good doctor with him word overriding the nurse. He was there as a visitor. He was not the attending OB for that baby. Doctors can't and don't run rule over every patient in the hospital. They take care of patients that are admitted to them. Call a doctor about a patient that he is not seeing and see how fast you get cussed out. They can't tell you anything about a patient they don't know anything about. The doctor in this case was there in a friend capacity not physician. Aside from being a doctor at that hospital, if I was a regular joe smo and that was my friend I would've gotten him to calm down and act like he has some sense. People come into hospital and have a sense of entitlement bc of their perceived status in society. They want hospitals to manage their care effectively but also be able to do what they want and talk to staff any kind of way. Nurses get treated which such disrepect by a lot of patients and their families. Why, because nurses are just baby sitters following doctor orders? Nurses have college degrees just like doctors and should be treated with the same respect. Nurses are not just baby sitters, we save lives. It's the nurses there all day and night when the doctors just run in and out. It's nurses that will sit down and talk with a patient when they are having anxiety about being in the hospital then through the conversation find something else is going on at home and come up with solutions for making the hospital admission less stressful and home issue. Bottom line there're rules to follow when you're at the hospital especially on a maternity ward. If he wanted his baby to get some fresh air that bad then he should've asked the nurses to call their doctor and get an order to have the baby discharged. Then they baby could've gotten all the fresh air he wanted him to have NOT under the hospital care.

As a maternity nurse I can say had those nurses not stopped him, they would surely be fired. What if he took the wrong baby by accident? Why is he even walking around with the baby in the hallways? Does he think that being a Kennedy allows him to do what he wants? Yes, he is the father to that child, but while that baby is in the hospital, his safety is the hospital's #1 concern.

A sign of the times alright. Big business/the state think they own people. Here's a child that will, when older, know that his father cares more than mis-guided, arrogant reactionaries. Nurses who acted like Kennedy was high risk and sounded the alarm need to re-align their judgement. Perhaps this incident will help them with what should be basic understanding. If management puts pressure on nurses to act this way without thinking reasonably then hospital management should be put under scrutiny and dealt with. For nurses to panic over a responsible father taking his young son out for fresh air is nonsense no matter what the spin.

Ok, so it was against hospital policy to take the baby outside. Was Mr. Kennedy informed of this? He had permission from an on duty doctor to take the baby outside. Last time I checked, doctors overrule nurses. And as far as the video why is it played in slow motion. Play it in real time.

Is it because that he is a Kennedy, that we make excuses for him?? Hospitals have policies
The nurses were doing their jobs. I am a nurse and never heard of a parent removing a child from the hospital before discharge. If he felt such an urge ,why did't go through the proper channels and secure permission and accept the answer even if it was a "no" What now everyone will be taking their newborns outside for fresh air. Give me a break!!!!!!! Kennedy you need anger control. and follow the rules LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. You win the moron prize.

@LOU MSN, yes I watched the video that was posted. No, I did not see security in the video. I can only hope that since two codes were called, both being security codes, that security was on it's way. I just think that wrestling over a newborn in a stairwell was not the brightest idea.

I completely agree with you that they should have mag locked doors with controlled entry/exit. Most of the hospitals I've been in the baby also wears an alarm which if brought too close to a door will lock down the entire unit! Of course it's not every day some psychopath decides to bring his newborn out for fresh air though.

And as far as the patient signing a contract, well that wouldn't have made a difference!
