Alright well, as far as this guy being stupid there’s usually a little more that goes into than that. For one rescue teams have to deal with more dumb### hikers who get hurt or stuck on these mountains then they ever have to deal with base jumpers so why dont you guys go get on their cases about being stupid and putting rescuers in harm’s way. As far as this guy packing his chute backwards or upside down Im calling BS. Its way more likely this guy had a line twist upon opening which would cause his parachute to fly backwards relative to the way he was facing, this caused a cliff strike at which point he was screwed. BASE rigs are completely different than skydiving rigs and it is impossible to pack a base chute upside down or backwards without noticing a huge problem, i.e. line twist upon packing.

Geeze, capt oblivious, i can only wish to be as awesomely knowledgable as you. Of course i relied on the reporters words that the man packed his chute backwards (actually, i think it says upside down). Ya see, I had ONLY the report to rely on……unlike you, I can’t devine from thin air what happened. Heck, in my ignorance, I would not have even known that the guy had an accident had it not been for reading the reporter’s words…I’m just not up to your level at knowing everything. Please explain how it is “obvious” that he didn’t pack his chute backwards? I am not a sky diver, but i did search through google, ask dot com, and several sky diving technical web sites, and the experts there state quite plainly that pavking a chute, while simple to do correctly, can indeed be packed backwards. Knowing that your expertise is so great that it impelled you to come in and flame on me, would you be so kind as to write to those websites and let them know how ignorant they are also? And I will continue to dream of the day that I may become as wonderfully un-ignorant and as enlightened as you. Now…don’t you have somewhere to occupy?

At libwatch… You start off with some street credit by being a pilot , scuba diver with a billion dives and tell us how smart you are because you know how to check your gear…then you go ahead and believe a reporter that has no clue what they are talking about…obviously the jumper didn’t pack his parachute backward, that just shows your ignorance, and if you have no idea what your talking about its best not to comment. That is all.

Frank Burns, I understand exactly what you are saying, and could not agree more; however, I think that you have missed the point of those of us that you label “scaredy cats”. I won’t speak for others, but my issue is not with his joie d’vive, his love for life. My issue is his carelessness in doing so (packing his parachute backwards). Look, I am a pilot, a SCUBA diver, a motorcyclist, an EMT…I love living my life to the limit. But I would never consider taking off in my airplane without first going thru my preflight checklist. Each and every time. As a Navy diver in the past and a recreational and rescue diver now, I have made literally over a thousand dives. Never have I made a dive without thoroughly checking my equipment for condition and proper connections. So those of us “judging” this BASE jumper have one major piece of evidence tha makes us conclude he acted stupidly: he packed his chute BACKWARDS. And that is an astonishingly stupid mistake. You can’t sustain life when you screw up the basics.

How many people died in car wrecks the same day, or had heart attacks eating chips and watching the TUBE. What about their costs? Why all the rancor against people who want to live life to the fullest — methinks most scaredy cats are just jealous. Your average adventurer is as costly as the heart-attack prone couch potato/ drinker/ smoker / ice cream eater — you name it.

“You can’t fix stupid…”. How true. So what you do drag the rest of society down to your level by dumbing down public schools, push left-leaning agendas in secondary schools and universities, call yourself “progressive”, and destroy the very nation that provided you the right to do so. Thus, “stupid” simply blends in with the background, until the next level of stupidity rears its ugly head…as this BASE jumper did.

Great. Another thrill seeker who puts him/herself in harms way for the rush and has to be rescued. Most BASE jumps are illegal, but what do the jumpers care. So, he puts someone else in harms way to rescue him. I hope he’s criminally charged if necessary, and also has to pay for every dime of the rescue costs. As Ron White says “You can’t fix stupid”.

It’s BASE not Base. BASE is an acronym for building antenna span earth. This journalist/editor needs to pay a bit more attention.

Plummeted to his death AND died?! I’d be ok with plummeting to my death, but then dying again….that’s just too much.
