I saw myself in a mirror one day, years ago, and thought, "The legs coming out of those shorts look way too thin." But then why was I still too fat? It isn't about health OR what actually looks good. It's about fear, pain, anxiety, insecurity, trauma etc. It's about thinking so very little of yourself and believing that achieving the coveted thinness can elevate you above yourself and everyone else. It gives you a false sense of superiority for only moments of time while it alienates you further from the people you envy. It distorts your thinking and perception. It turns you into a freak. Now I'm 47 and still too 'into' clean eating and working out. Still battle anxious and compulsive eating. Still very insecure. But battling, everyday, to find ways to cope with overwhelming feelings, including finding inspirational quotes, having a solid faith, and making myself BE a friend to others.....not isolating. I have come a long long way when I look back. But it starts in the head and heart.

The problem with this is several fold. Sure, you get the stuff removed from social media sites, but since you are talking about a legal, albeit stupid, activity, that means they will move it to their own websites and blogs where you are not able to influence them positively. You force them into hiding. Does that make sense? Secondly, we are talking about more than an eating issue here, we are talking about a psychological issue. The reason they make it seem like it is normal behavior is because in their head, it is. As long as you have "eating" as the disorder, they will never be dealt with, since eating is not the issue, but a symptom.

Honestly this needs to be stopped. As someone with an eating disorder I have frequently found pictures of myself (personal ones) that were on my facebook or twitter and have been posted on these disgusting blogs. It is a mental disorder, not a way to lose weight. I hope all of them get taken down because it is offensive and makes me sick to my stomach. Nobody should have to suffer or feel pressured into suffering from what I go through day to day. It should also be noted that perhaps media forces people into thinking, especially this generation. I feel horribly skinny and I do not wish my hair loss, loss of menstrual cycle, mental disordered, disgustingly bony life on anybody.

I see a lot of this among women I know using Pinterest - they have whole pinboards dedicated to "health" but all they pin there are pictures of very thin or highly sculpted women with sayings like "Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels." It's disturbing and sad, and I have made comments to more than one friend regarding my concern over their obsessive pinning of these kinds of images and messages. I hope that Pinterest will at least make an attempt to remove the most disturbing and blatantly pro-eating disorder content from their website.

I love Pinterest, for the recipes, room ideas, and craft ideas, but the images of skinny, SKINNY girls on there are overtaking the main pages! Please Pinterest, follow FaceBook's lead and DO SOMETHING to stop it!
