No, skiiers have always gone off-trail and into the back country. It’s just more dangerous this year *because* of the unstable conditions.

When the news reports people killed in an avalanche, you’ll so often hear they were either skiing, snowboarding, or snowmobiling away from marked trails and in out-of-bounds areas. For backcountry skiers, we hear they aren’t paying attention to the conditions/dangers. Sounds like the cause of deadly avalanches is more the human factor than the unstable snow.
