New York City's Hottest Doorman to be Crowned

New York City doormen, long the anonymous workers toiling away at the city's poshest residences, are finally getting a shot at fame and glory thanks to a new contest sponsored by an apartment rental site.

The first annual NYC Hot Doorman Search is now accepting applications for that doorman who makes you swoon every time he delivers a package or opens the elevator door.

The contest is sponsored by Rentenna, a start-up website that helps apartment dwellers navigate the messy world of Manhattan real estate by rating rental buildings for them, an appropriate fit for a contest to let people rate their doorman, too.

The contest, first reported by the Wall Street Journal, launched April 12 in a post on the site's Facebook page.  Nominators have to like the company on Facebook and then post their nominee's name and the address of the building where he, or she - the company says doorwomen qualify too - works.

Since beauty, even in New York City, can only get you so far, in addition to a photograph, the company is also asking nominees to answer, "What is one thing that is quirky, different or interesting about him [the doorman]?"

The contest will stay open through the end of May and then the company will narrow down the submissions to a final 10.  The voting will then go back to the people, through a Facebook poll, with a winner announced the beginning of June.

More than a dozen posts on the Facebook page so far include a nomination for a doorman named Angel because, "with a name like Angel he MUST win."  Another nominator, named Patrice, even went so far as to call out doormen not even in her building.

"They are not my doormen and I don't know their names, but the tenants of the two large buildings on the east side of West End Avenue between 85th and 86th Streets in Manhattan need to step up and nominate their doormen - the ones who work the afternoon-to-evening shift," she wrote.

Patrice and other nominees may have a more selfish reason to submit because Rentenna will give prizes to both the doorman and the nominator.  The hottest doorman, and his nominator, will win a free happy hour at a New York City bar, while the runner-up will get tickets to a New York Yankees or Mets game.  Third prize is "the finest whiskey Rentenna can afford," while  the rest of the seven finalists are promised a "hot surprise," according to the contest's Facebook page.
