Wow, ABC apparently can’t or doesn’t want to do the math for this story. According to the story, plants will ‘double’ the line speed from 90 birds/min to 175 (ok, that’s almost correct). Then they go on to say that currently the lines run 4 inspectors at 35 birds/min (which means the lines are already running at 140 birds/min). Most plants in the US already run 140 birds/min…meaning this is a 25% increase in production.

Bad choice, very bad choice. As it is now, USDA inspection system is failing. It all begun with HACCP-Have A Cup Of Coffee Pal, and latest addition of PHIS-public health inspection system? Now this proposal new modernization inspection system? Jobs will be lost and our food safety will be gone and the safety of our inspection force will also be gone. Do you want this chickens to end up in your family dinner table with your loved ones? Think of about it!

The only safe alternative now is to buy organic chickens or better yet, buy from local farms. Fewer and fewer people are looking out for our best interest and those who make these decisions are usually on the side of profit over protection. The largest threat to U.S. security are the people who are in charge of protecting us, and are failing us miserably. Our enemies are not foreign terrorists, they are us.

Congratulations Jim. You have found another meat industry to slander. At least you had a link to the truthful statement from the Chicken Council. However, it is obvious from your reporting that you are, once again, more interested in listening to innuendo than in reporting the truth. Modernization of poultry inspection still under the watching eye of the USDA is not letting “the industry self-inspect”. I assume that you will now be going after lamb or turkey. Surely there is something going on in those industries where you can find somebody to offer a misinformed opinion.

I have worked in these plants. I know what goes on. The government is saying it is to save money but the union did a study and it concluded the government would save the average taxpayer around 3 dollars a YEAR with these cuts. It is a bad gamble.

people love to ignore the pink elephant in the room don’t they? if everyone were to switch to free-range meat and eat it in the same quantities that we do conventional meat, we would simply not have enough room, hence the reason factory farming came about. has it ever crossed anyone’s mind to *wait for it*… reduce their meat intake?? or *gasp* not eat meat at all??

If you are really adamant that there should be more inspectors on the line, then vocalize that to your congress-person. The government is responsible for the dramatic decrease in the USDA’s budget. Stopping the consumption of chicken isn’t going to change how the government spends its money. Only your voice and your vote can do that.
